Former WWE Superstar soon-to-be turned UFC Fighter CM Punk has been announced as co-writer on a new Drax ongoing series for Marvel.
Punk, aka Phil Brooks, recently wrote a story for the Thor Annual for Marvel.
The success of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie has spawned many spinoff comics for the different characters. Gamora gets her own ongoing as well from Nicole Perlman, who wrote an earlier version of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie script and is co-writing the Captain Marvel movie.
Regarding the new Drax series, CM Punk made the announcement today at C2E2 with mention the title will launch later this year. The cover for the first issue will be by Ed McGuinness. It’s presently unknown who the co-writer and artist are (Andy Lanning wouldn’t be a bad choice as co-writer) for the series.
While no plot details are known, we see mention of “Intergalactic Fight Club” on the Drax cover, which was featured in Rocket Raccoon #1 as well.
Hopefully Punk will do his homework by reading the 2005 Drax mini-series, Annihilation and Abnett and Lanning’s 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy series that inspired the near billion dollar movie.
Our advice to Punk would be to skip Bendis‘ Guardians series in its entirety.
Marvel has teased another Avengers and X-Men event at C2E2 with “AXIS” hitting this Fall.
We’ll update when more info becomes available.
Check out the teaser:
We get some breaking news coming out of the C2E2 as it’s become known that the 100th Anniversary Special – Guardians of the Galaxy comic book from Marvel will be written by Andy Lanning and Ron Marz.
On art is Gustavo Duarte with a cover by David Lopez.
Of course fans known that Andy Lanning was one half of the cosmic duo known as DnA on the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy comic book.
Ron Marz is a legend and known for working on Silver Surfer, Green Lantern and lots more.
Look for the issue to hit in July.
Update: The five-weely series that make up the 100th Anniversary Specials that Marvel is releasing in July take place in the year 2061, 100 years after the start of the modern-day Marvel Universe in 1961’s Fantastic Four #1. (Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers and Fantastic Four make up the others).

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7306:]]Announced at the recent C2E2, Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman are bringing Miguel O’Hara to the pages of Superior Spider-Man with September’s issue #17.
Not many details are known, but Slott did tell CBR that eagle-eyed Spidey fans can spot where he first hinted at Spider-Man 2099 by comparing their comic books to the corrected version of the trade.
I can tell you that somewhere during the “Big Time” era I screwed up and wrote something incorrectly that we later fixed in the trade. If you’re an eagle-eyed fan of the “Big Time” era and you compare your comics to your trades, you’ll be able to find my flub, which tipped my hand way too early that we were planning a 2099 story.
Other details that Slott let be known about Spider-Man 2099 is that it will be the original (i.e. not the Kirkman reboot), and that the story will be similar to the Terminator of sorts.
This time out, Spider-Man 2099 coming from the future will very much be like a character from one of the “Terminator” movies showing up. What he perceives to be good or bad is based on what effect it will have on the future, which means that stuff in the present that appears on the surface to be good might have terrible ramifications — and vice versa.
This means you start running into all the paradoxes of, “Would you kill Hitler?” and then the worst paradox of, “Would you kill Hitler as a baby?” There’s always the danger in time travel stories of defining what is good and what is evil.
So what’s all this time travel business all about? Slott says it has to do with all the other similar events that are happening in the Marvel U.
If you’re paying close attention to the Marvel Universe, there are a lot of time anomalies and time travel stories that all seem to be happening during Marvel NOW!. We have the younger selves of the original five X-Men now in the present, the “Age of Ultron,” plus, there are a couple of other surprises on the horizon. And now there’s this. Something seems to be happening to Time in the Marvel U., which makes it the perfect time for someone from the future to come to the present.
We do know that Spidey and Spider-Man 2099 have met before, but this time it’s the Superior version.
This isn’t an Amazing Spider-Man that will be meeting him now! It’s a Superior Spider-Man. So that’ll be a first.
And Slott lets one more detail loose, the story will feature an Osborn, but will say no more (I think it’s rumored to be the return of Norman).
We will see a member of the Osborn family.
[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7276:]]Today at the C2E2, Marvel Comics announced the return of The Sentry.
Coming to Rick Remender’s Uncanny Avengers, The Sentry will return as an Apocalypse Horseman of Death along with Banshee, the Grim Reaper and Daken in the “Four Deaths” storyline.
And it’s said we will see a rematch between the man with the power of a million suns and the Asgardian thunder god.
In addition, Daken will take on Wolverine, Banshee vs. Alex Summers and Grim Reaper vs. Rogue.
Series writer Rick Remender stated:
We’re trying to grow the Apocalypse mythology. Uncanny Avengers is the big world-shaking threats. The Apocalypse Twins, the children of Warren Worthington and Pestilence, grown up in the future, raised by Kang, and they’re doing things differently.
They have taken 4 death seeds from 4 celestials, and they are tough characters. You have the Sentry, you’ll have a big Sentry – Thor rematch.
We have Grim Reaper vs. Rogue. We have Daken vs. Wolverine. We have Banshee vs. Alex Summers
There’s probably bad blood between Daken and his dad, since he drowned him in a puddle.
What the Apocalypse twins have done is create the Four Horsemen of Death…this sounds like I’m sitting in my house playing D&D by myself. Each one of them have context with our cast. You’re going to see a big Sentry/Thor knockdown fight.
Last we saw of The Sentry, The Void and Robert Reynolds, was during Siege when Thor was forced to strike him down with a lightning bolt
At the C2E2 Marvel Comics revealed the following 8-Bit Avengers Arena cover. Marvel has been doing variant covers as if they were Nintendo Games. A new story arc will be beginning soon that will reveal who lives, who dies and who wins. It’s dubbed “End Boss”; hence the cover. [[wysiwyg_imageupload:7269:]]

DC Comics revealed Tony Daniel’s new Superman original poster for this year’s Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) which takes place from April 26th-28th.
As you may or may not know, DC Comics is also launching a new Man of Steel comic book by superstar artist Jim Lee and best-selling Batman writer, Scott Snyder, which launches in conjunction with the new Man of Steel movie as well as the 75th anniversary of Superman.
In addition, Zack Snyder filmed the Man of Steel in Chicago, and the C2E2 happens to be the biggest convention prior to the movie’s debut on June 14th. It’s quite possible we may see something from the movie there.
Fans will be able to see the poster featured in Chicago area retailers and on transit trains and buses, with Superman being a major part of the convention’s marketing plans.
“Each year I am always encouraged by the tremendous support that DC Entertainment provides at our shows,” said Lance Fensterman, Group Vice President for ReedPOP and Show Manager for C2E2, in a statement. “This year is obviously no exception and this early announcement is a great way to be setting the stage for C2E2. The poster art is a key element of our show and a critical part of our marketing strategy. This year’s image reflects the strength and dynamism of C2E2 and I am incredibly grateful to Tony Daniel for contributing his time and effort on our behalf. He is a brilliant artist and he has created what will be a lasting image for C2E2 in 2013.”
Check out the poster with the Chicago skyline in the background:
When Cosmic Book News offered to give me a press pass to cover C2E2 (Comic Con and Entertainment Expo) in Chicago, I was thrilled. I’d been to Wizard World in Chicago the previous summer, but had heard that C2E2 was a much bigger and more involved convention with more to offer. As I walked into the convention center at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday morning at McCormick Place, I soon realized it was true.
The aura that the people who were attending the convention gave off was nothing but fun and enthusiasm. People shouted outside the showroom floor as we waited to enter and continued to do so even after they opened the doors at 10 A.M. The flood of fans moved quickly into the Marvel and DC booths up front, then poured into the booths that Archaia, Top Shelf, and Avatar Press were hosting nearby.
Past the booths of the various publishers, big and small, the exhibitors selling toys, t-shirts, models, and just about any other pop culture junkie’s dreams were set up. It was like a medieval marketplace. In fact, there were a few times I was surrounded by bladed weapons. All of which were replicas from video games and comic books. And speaking of replicas, there was an entire booth of memorabilia from the Captain America film last summer. The shield, costume, and various pieces of art were on display with the motorcycles from the blockbuster movie.
Artist Alley was by far the greatest part of the convention. Fans were lining up to talk to the titans of the printed comic book page to have their books signed and purchase original pieces of art. Artists like Sean Murphy (American Vampire, Hellblazer, Punk Rock Jesus), Gabriel Hardman (Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes, Exile on the Planet of the Apes), Ramon Perez (Tale of Sand, Gods of Mars) and Peter Krause (Irredeemable, The Power of Shazam) were there to interact with fans and share their artwork.
Due to time constraints I wasn’t able to make it to too many panels, but I did catch the Dynamite and Vertigo panels that were held by the publishers. At the Dynamite panel they discussed the ongoing Voltron series and what they have planned for titles like Warriors of Mars, The Shadow, Green Hornet, and Army of Darkness.
The Vertigo panel had a wonderful preview of the upcoming issues of American Vampire, Punk Rock Jesus, Saucer Country, Fables, The Fairest, and Spaceman. They also announced a new series called Collider, which was described as an “A-Team†type of group crossed with “quantum physics and events.†The news of the title went over well with fans and was greeted with excitement.
The entire experience was incredibly fun. Compared to the previous cons I’ve been to, this one was definitely the best in terms of guests, vendors, and fans. If you’re thinking about going to a comic book convention in the Midwest, C2E2 is hands down the best the country has to offer.
