Star Wars / Marvel Crossover With Mark Millar Rumor Shot Down

The rumored Star Wars and Marvel crossover with Mark Millar already appears to be dead.

A big rumor hit the comics world claiming Marvel was developing a Star Wars/Avengers crossover comic, with Civil War and Ultimates writer Mark Millar supposedly returning to Marvel to write it.

It would have been one of the wildest crossovers Marvel could possibly publish, bringing together two of Disney’s biggest brands in one comic book event. But according to a new update, the specific Millar rumor is not happening.

Rumor Claimed Mark Millar Was Returning To Marvel

The rumor originated at Bleeding Cool, which claimed Marvel was planning a Star Wars Vs. Avengers crossover and that Mark Millar was attached to write it.

Millar would have been a major name for the project. He wrote Marvel’s original Civil War comic, helped shape the Ultimate Marvel line with The Ultimates, and has a long history with big, high-concept superhero stories.

On paper, the rumor made enough sense to spread fast. Marvel publishes Star Wars comics, Disney owns both Marvel and Lucasfilm, and crossover comics are once again getting attention after Marvel and DC finally brought back intercompany crossover projects.

But that does not mean this one is real.

The Millar Crossover Claim Gets Shot Down

The Hollywood Reporter has now poured cold water on the claim, reporting that the rumor of a Star Wars/Avengers crossover written by Mark Millar is not true.

That appears to kill the biggest part of the story. As of now, Marvel has not announced a Star Wars/Avengers crossover, Lucasfilm has not announced one, and Millar has not been confirmed for any such project.

So for now, the specific rumor is dead.

Rob Liefeld Helped Fuel The Talk

Part of the reason the rumor gained traction is because Rob Liefeld had previously teased the idea of Star Wars and Avengers crossing over.

That was enough to get fans and comic sites speculating about whether Marvel might finally be ready to put Disney’s two biggest geek brands into the same comic book event.

But there is a difference between a vague tease, a pitch that may have been discussed, and an actual approved comic book with a writer attached.

The Mark Millar part is what now appears to have been shot down.

Could A Star Wars And Marvel Crossover Still Happen?

The larger idea is not impossible.

Marvel already publishes Star Wars comics under license from Lucasfilm, and both brands sit under Disney. From a corporate standpoint, there is no obvious reason a non-canon crossover comic could never happen.

The bigger question would be Lucasfilm approval. Star Wars has always been more protective of its canon and brand identity than Marvel Comics, and mixing Jedi, Sith, Avengers, and superheroes would be a major tonal gamble.

It could also be a massive sales play if Marvel ever pulled it off. A one-off, out-of-continuity event with Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, and the Avengers would get attention no matter how fans felt about it.

Rumor Dead, Idea Still Out There

For now, though, the takeaway is simple: Mark Millar is reportedly not writing a Star Wars/Avengers crossover for Marvel.

The rumor was big enough to spread because the concept is easy to imagine and because Marvel could use a massive comics event. But until Marvel, Lucasfilm, or Disney announces something official, this one belongs in the “not happening” pile.

That said, the fact fans immediately believed it says something. A Star Wars and Marvel crossover may sound ridiculous, but it also sounds like exactly the kind of stunt Disney could eventually try.
