Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Official Trailer Released As Revenge Against The Empire Takes Center Stage

Lucasfilm has released a new official trailer for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, offering a bigger look at the upcoming animated Disney+ series and making clear this story is all about revenge.

“Let us have our revenge,” Maul says in the trailer, as the footage teases a darker Star Wars series packed with lightsaber fights, Imperial Inquisitors, underworld crime, and a planet about to get caught in the middle.

The all-new series premieres April 6 on Disney+ with a two-episode launch.

Maul Declares War On The Empire

The new trailer opens with Maul described as a syndicate leader tied to multiple criminal organizations and “proficient… with a laser sword.” It doesn’t take long for the footage to reveal where things are headed.

“The Empire tried to kill me,” Maul says. “Their betrayal demands consequence. And that consequence requires… a weapon.”

That lines up with the premise of the series, which takes place after The Clone Wars and follows Maul as he tries to rebuild his criminal syndicate on Janix, a planet said to be untouched by the Empire. There, he comes into contact with the young Jedi Padawan Devon Izara, who appears to play a key role in his latest plans.

The trailer also makes clear not everyone is buying into Maul’s pitch. “The Empire may be our common enemy… but Maul will never be our ally,” one character warns.

Inquisitors, Janix, And More Characters Revealed

The footage teases Imperial Inquisitors hunting Maul, including The Crow, identified as the Eleventh Brother, and Marrok. The Empire is closing in as the situation spirals out of control.

“We need to find him. Whatever it takes,” a voice says in the trailer.

“This is escalating out of our hands.”

“The Empire will want answers. The Empire will lock this planet down.”

Lucasfilm also released a new poster featuring Maul at the center, surrounded by the major players in the series. Along with Maul, the key art includes Devon Izara, Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki, Mandalorian warrior Rook Kast, Zabrak brothers Icarus and Scorn, and Looti Vario. Also featured are Captain Brander Lawson, his droid partner Two-Boots, and Lawson’s son Rylee, with a Star Destroyer looming overhead above Janix.

What Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Is About

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is described as a pulpy adventure set in the early years of Emperor Palpatine’s reign. Maul is rebuilding his power base while using Janix as the backdrop for his next move against the Empire.

The official synopsis says Maul crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who could become the apprentice he needs in his relentless pursuit for revenge.

The trailer leans hard into that setup, with Maul proposing an alliance to strike back. One of the closing lines says it all: “We’re not gonna take out the whole Empire.” That suggests the series may focus less on toppling Palpatine outright and more on survival, power, and vengeance inside a galaxy already tightening under Imperial control.
