A24 Brings Back ‘Bloodsport’ With Michaela Coel Writing and Directing

A24 Brings Back 'Bloodsport' With Michaela Coel Writing and Directing

Michaela Coel is bringing Bloodsport back.

A24 has tapped the I May Destroy You creator to write and direct a remake of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1988 cult martial arts movie, with the trade reports describing it as a reimagining rather than a straight remake. A24 is financing and distributing the film.

The original 1988 Bloodsport followed Van Damme as U.S. Army Captain Frank Dux, who enters an underground full-contact martial arts tournament in Hong Kong.

Plot details for Coel’s version have not been revealed, so it’s not known how much of the original story, characters, or tournament setup will remain intact.

Michaela Coel Writing And Directing

Coel is writing and directing the project, but it sounds like her on-screen involvement remains up in the air for now.

The reports focus on her creative role behind the camera and do not confirm that she will also star. That will likely be one of the big questions fans have moving forward, especially since Coel is best known for not only creating but also starring in her own work.

In a statement, Coel said she has long been fascinated by fighters and by the discipline, intensity, and isolation that come with that world, which suggests her take may lean harder into character and psychology while still using the tournament format as the hook.

“I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them,” Coel said. “I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S F-CKING GO.”

A24 Goes After Another Known IP

This is another notable move for A24, which has built its reputation on filmmaker-driven projects but has also shown it is willing to play with recognizable IP when there is a strong creative angle.

Bringing in Coel makes it clear this won’t simply be a copy of the Van Damme movie.

THR specifically describes the project as a reimagining, which is worth paying attention to. That usually means audiences should expect changes in tone, perspective, and possibly even the core premise instead of a beat-for-beat redo.

Trump, ‘Rush Hour 4,’ And The ‘Bloodsport’ Connection

What makes the timing interesting is that Bloodsport was also dragged into the headlines when reports surfaced about Rush Hour 4.

Back when news broke that Rush Hour 4 was moving forward, multiple reports said Donald Trump is a big fan of Bloodsport, with the movie even described in some coverage as his favorite. One report said he was especially passionate about late ’80s and ’90s action movies, including Bloodsport, while pushing for more of that type of entertainment in Hollywood.

So now in addition to Rush Hour, another one of those older action titles is getting revived, though likely not in the exact way fans of the original might expect. With Michaela Coel writing and directing for A24, Bloodsport is being reimagined rather than simply revived as a straightforward copy of the Van Damme cult classic.

Producers Also Revealed

Variety says Marc Toberoff and Alberto Lensi are producing, with Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle executive producing. Toberoff also said the original Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts and that he is looking forward to bringing that high-energy tournament format back to the big screen.

“In 1988, the now-iconic Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts,” said Toberoff. “I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again.”

That last part may be the key. Even if Coel’s version changes a lot, the tournament format sounds like it could still remain central. If so, the real question is whether this ends up feeling like Bloodsport at all, or just a new fighter drama using the old title.
