It’s Not Your Fault: The DnA Interview
Marvel’s latest cosmic event, The Thanos Imperative, exploded on to the scene with two sell-out titles, The Thanos Imperative: Ignition #1 (Brad Walker art) andThe Thanos Imperative #1, from the stellar creative team of Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning (DnA) and artist Miguel Sepulveda.
Issue #2 hit a couple of weeks ago and fans erupted at the site of the Galactus Engine face-to-face against the Marvel Universe’s most powerful. An almost fully powered mad Titan was shown incinerating the Fault Universe’s own Defenders.
Last week, Marvel released a teaser for the upcoming Thanos Imperative #3 featuring the “Galaxy’s Mightiest Heroes.” Side by side stood the Silver Surfer, Nova, Quasar, Gladiator, Ronan and one recent addition: Beta Ray Bill, the Asgard-eque Korbinite.
The San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) begins this weekend with DnA as panelists on Thursday’s Mondo Marvel panel. Cosmic Book News caught up with the Cosmic Duo as they prepared to head Stateside.
We asked a few questions regarding the recent events in The Thanos Imperative, their thoughts on Nova in Secret Avengers and because fans demanded it, Captain Marvel.
Cosmic Book News: Will we be learning how Aegis and Tenebrous came back to life and how they made their peace with Galactus?
DnA: The great “Cosmic Abstracts” move in mysterious ways. Their mortality does not operate the way ours does. We may not explicitly see how they came back to “life,” we just know that the threat of the Cancerverse is so great, any animosity between them and Galactus is shelved for the time being.
Cosmic Book News: Speaking of the Cancerverse, as Thanos gets his power back will we be seeing more of the Many-Angled Ones’ “heroes” trying to stop him?
DnA: That’s a big yes. Yes, indeed!
Cosmic Book News: What can you tell us about the “Galactus Engine,” an entity (?) that seems to dwarf Galactus and the Abstracts as they dwarf us?
DnA: Essentially, as you might suspect, it’s the Cancerverse’s version of Galactus, but bio-engineered by the Many-Angled Gods of the outer dark into an even more extraordinary and apocalyptic mechanism of cosmic annihilation.
Cosmic Book News: It is thrilling that you are adding another cosmic champion, Beta Ray Bill, to the mix with this war against the forces of the Cancerverse. How will this cosmic Thor doppelganger work into the saga? What can you tell us about the “Galaxy’s Mightiest Heroes?”
DnA: In the middle of the extreme frontline battle, Nova finds he needs a small but elite strike force of very heavy hitters for a very specific purpose. Those are the guys he calls up. What happens next is pure cosmic wow.
Cosmic Book News: Have you been reading Secret Avengers? What do you think about Nova being part of that team?
DnA: Yes, we have. It’s great, and it’s really nice to see him as part of such an illustrious team, properly recognizing his first division status.
Cosmic Book News: Lastly, anything to say regarding Mar-vell?
DnA: Mar-Vell was one of our favorite cosmic heroes, and we always wanted to have him feature in a story. However, his death was so amazing, one of the all-time best comic book deaths and one of those very few that should NEVER be undone. So it occurred to us that he would make the perfect villain: his Cancerverse self demonstrates how he and the universe itself would have altered if his life and death had run along a different course.
Cosmic Book News: Thanks for your time! Great interview!

MOVIE REVIEW: Inception
Inception is the best movie of this summer, perhaps even the past few summers and Chris Nolan is making what Dane Cook would refer to as “cinematic adventures” fun, surprising and satisfying once again. Despite Nolan’s ever increasing reputation as a sure thing, I had numerous reservations about this production as soon as the advertising …

MOVIE REVIEW: The Last Airbender
This film is all about M. Night Shyamalan. Assuming the writing, directing and producing responsibilities for a film he is involved with is his M. O. However, Night has always done this with a completely original idea and The Last Airbender is his first real shot at helming someone else’s franchise. Night’s appeal has always …
MOVIE REVIEW: Jonah Hex

Andrew Garfield Is The New Spider-Man!
Set for a July 3rd 2012 release is the new Spider-Man movie!
Sony just announced that playing Peter Parker will be Andrew Garfield!
Check out the official Press Release below for more on Garfield.
Press Release
After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.
Today’s confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.
The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.
On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”
Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said, “Spider-Man is a classic superhero — a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker.”
Producer Avi Arad added, “I’m incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.”
Producer Laura Ziskin said, “We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen.”
The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment.[[wysiwyg_imageupload:209:]]
Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.
Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I’m Here, which premiered at Sundance this year. He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.
Other notable screen credits include Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus playing opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger, Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs, where he starred alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films’ “Red Riding Trilogy – 1974” directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley’s “Boy A,” for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008.
Garfield’s career began in theatre and in 2006 his performances in “Beautiful Thing” (Sound Space/Kit Productions), “The Overwhelming,” and “Burn / Chatroom / Citizenship” (Royal National Theatre) won him the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard awards and the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Other notable theatre credits include “Romeo and Juliet” (Manchester Royal Exchange) and “Kes” (Manchester Royal Exchange), for which he received the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Awards 2004.

Green Lantern Sequel and The Flash To Share Same Writing Team
[[wysiwyg_imageupload:185:]]
Late last night http://www.heatvisionblog.com/ reported that Warner Brothers is stepping up their Super-Hero movie productions. They have signed Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim to begin working on a second Green Lantern movie in addition to a movie based on The Flash. According to the article under this deal, they would then go on to write the screenplay for one of the two projects – though which one has not been determined.
Green Lantern is currently shooting in New Orleans with Martin Campbell directing and staring Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. Green Lantern is based on the DC comic book about test Pilot Hal Jordan who becomes part of an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps. Development on a second installment this far out from a movie’s release date is rare, signaling the studio’s confidence in what it sees so far.
It appears according to the article that The Flash will be drawn from the resent relaunch of the comic franchise which has been written by Geoff Johns.
“The ‘Flash’ film will take inspiration from Johns’ recent work and will feature the Barry Allen incarnation of the character. (In comics lore, several names have wielded the Flash mantle, though Allen, created in 1956, remains by far the most popular.)”
Berlanti, creator of “Everwood,” recently directed the feature “Life as We Know it,” starring Katherine Heigl, and is an exec producer on ABC’s “Brothers and Sisters.” He co-created “Eli Stone” with Guggenheim, who is exec producing ABC’s upcoming superhero drama “No Ordinary Family.” Berlanti co-created “Family,” which stars Michael Chiklis. Green worked with Berlanti on “Everwood” and created NBC’s “Kings.”

Green Lantern Movie Ring Revealed Along With Marketing Plans
[[wysiwyg_imageupload:183:]]After months of speculation as to what it might look like, Warner Brothers finally released an image which contains a close up shot of the Green Lantern Power Ring to be used in the up coming Green Lantern movie. The image originally posted on www.variety.com was part of an article speaking about the marketing plans for WB concerning GL. Here is an excerpt:
“Warner Bros. wants Green Lantern to make just as much green for the studio as Batman or Superman. But first it needs to make the character popular with the public. The studio’s consumer products division plans to unleash a major merchandising effort around DC Comics’ power ring-wearing space cop next year that includes everything from T-shirts to toys.
But the fate of those products hinges on the perf of the “Green Lantern” movie, which bows June 17, 2011. It stars Ryan Reynolds and is helmed by Martin Campbell, who has experience in franchise relaunches as the helmer of “Golden Eye,” which intro’d Pierce Brosnan as 007, and “Casino Royale,” which did the same for Daniel Craig.
If “Green Lantern” clicks, it will undoubtedly be a big boon to the character’s merchandise and bottomline of Warner Bros.’ consumer products arm, which already generates $6 billion a year in sales. That’s mostly thanks to Superman and Batman.
The movie is the engine that drives sales of not only the merchandise, but also the vidgame and a new animated series, for example, that will help turn Green Lantern into a truly evergreen franchise for the company.
The studio wants Green Lantern to grab a piece of the $5.4 billion that’s generated from licensed toy sales each year, according to NPD Group. Roughly 25% of all toy sales are tied to entertainment properties.”
From the article, previous things posted online and in Hollywood trades over the last couple of weeks we can expect a slew of Green Lantern products.
“Specifically, the character will be backed by action figures, vehicles, playsets, games, puzzles from Mattel, as the exclusive toymaker, with products involving its Hot Wheels, Tyco R/C and UNO brands. Other companies will produce apparel, videogames and collectibles,” again from Variety.com.
More than 100 licensing deals have already been inked in the US alone with more to come worldwide, most likely.
Green Lantern Hits in November of 2011 and I can’t wait.

Review: The Thanos Imperative #1
[[wysiwyg_imageupload:12523:]]
Writers: Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
Artist: Miguel Sepulveda
Colorist: Jay David Ramos
Warning: Contains Spoilers
Everything you’ve heard on the net about this comic is true. It’s a cosmic epic that is already giving the benchmark for comparison, Annihilation, a run for its money.
There are so many special moments in this non-stop thrill ride that it’s hard to know where to start in heaping praise upon writers Abnett and Lanning. My favorites include Rocket facing down Thanos, Drax donning his old costume, Starlord’s fateful decision to pit Thanos against the Cancerverse, and Nova rushing in to rescue his Corpsmen – even though he is powerless to prevent Nita’s abduction by the Cancerverse Avengers – or as they are dubbed, appropriately enough, “The Revengers.”
Abnett and Lanning have pulled out all the stops for this – their masterpiece tale of the cosmic universe they’ve created over the past three years. As each chapter unfolds – it becomes evident how current Thanos Imperative events are connected to events springing from Annihilation, Conquest, War of Kings, and Realm of Kings epics; and the Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing series. Continuity sticklers have struck the mother load.
The only thing that prevents this comic from attaining a 5-Star rating is the art and coloring. I found the art to stack up poorly against the art seen in the Ignition prologue. Sepulveda just doesn’t seem to have the same artistic grasp of the cosmic characters that many of his predecessors on the Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing series have demonstrated. To be fair, he has a lot of cosmic characters to draw and he’s not been one of the regular cosmic artists. Hopefully, over the course of this mini-series he’ll improve as he gets a feel for the characters. Likewise, I found the coloring to be a bit dull – and that also detracted a bit from the exciting events of this book.
Slight imperfections in art and coloring aside, if issue #1 is any indication, Thanos Imperative is well on its way to becoming a cosmic event that will be discussed and referred back to for many years to come along side such classic cosmic events as The Kree-Skrull War, The Infinity Gauntlet, and Annihilation. Don’t miss this event. Add it to your pull list today!

REVIEW: Robin Hood (2010)
The stand-alone epic: Is it a lost art form in Hollywood Land? I ask this question because I was extremely stunned to discover that this film is the first of an installment. Of how many sequels are planned, I am not certain, but I would never have pegged the likes of Ridley Scott or Russell …
