The Mandalorian And Grogu Box Office Underperforming As Star Wars Worries Grow

The Mandalorian and Grogu is already facing box office trouble overseas.

The new Star Wars movie opened internationally on Wednesday ahead of its Memorial Day weekend domestic release, and the early numbers out of Europe are said to be coming in below expectations.

The movie had been tracking for a $160 million worldwide opening, including around $80 million domestic over the four-day holiday weekend.

However, now reports are coming in the flick will open lower.

The Mandalorian and Grogu may miss $150M worldwide

Following the weak international start, The Mandalorian and Grogu is now said to be tracking toward the worst global opening weekend ever for a Star Wars movie.

The film might not even hit $150 million worldwide by Sunday.

For comparison, Solo: A Star Wars Story opened in 2018 with $103 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend domestically, which at the time made it the lowest Star Wars launch of the Disney era.

The Mandalorian and Grogu coming in under Solo would be a rough sign for Lucasfilm, especially since this marks the first Star Wars movie in theaters since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

Reviews also aren’t helping things as they are hovering around rotten on Rotten Tomatoes.

Puck says the movie needs $475M

Puck News recently pegged The Mandalorian and Grogu with a reported budget of $165 million and said the movie “needs to hit” $475 million.

Puck also noted a straight 2.5x multiplier on the reported budget would put the number at around $412 million, but argued success for Disney and Lucasfilm may come down to more than raw box office.

The outlet framed the movie as a test of overall Star Wars consumer sentiment, especially with kids, families, and casual fans.

Puck even suggested a Solo-sized global gross of $394 million could be spun as a first step toward franchise rehabilitation because The Mandalorian and Grogu cost far less than Solo, which carried a reshoot-inflated $275 million budget.

In other words, Disney may not need The Mandalorian and Grogu to hit old-school Star Wars numbers. It may just need the movie to prove audiences still care enough to show up.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is now in theaters with Thursday previews.
