Jason Momoa is officially out of Sony’s Helldivers movie, and while the reason for his departure hasn’t been revealed, the move may ultimately come down to tone.
According to Deadline, Momoa has exited the PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures adaptation of Helldivers, directed by Justin Lin.
The project remains in active development, with Sony now searching for a new lead. The film is still slated for a November 10, 2027, theatrical release.

Why Momoa Didn’t Quite Fit
Momoa is one of Hollywood’s most charismatic action stars, but much of his recent franchise work leans into a bigger, goofier energy.
His take on Aquaman embraced humor and swagger. He played the scene-stealing Dante in Fast X. He just starred in A Minecraft Movie as a garbage man, and he’s set to portray Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, another over-the-top, comic-book antihero.
Helldivers, however, operates in a different lane.
The games are satirical and chaotic, yes, but they play their militaristic propaganda straight-faced.
The humor nods comes from the dry, straight-faced satire of “managed democracy” and the expendability of the soldiers, not from “winking” performances.
Helldivers aren’t mythic heroes, they’re disposable troopers thrown into meat grinders for Super Earth. And they’re not goofy and silly.
A star persona built on bombast and comedic edge could easily shift that balance.

The Film Moves Forward
Sony hasn’t commented on why Momoa exited, and plot details remain under wraps. Justin Lin is still attached to direct, and the November 10, 2027 release date remains in place.
The departure gives Sony an opportunity to recalibrate casting toward someone who fits the grounded, boots-on-the-ground tone the franchise thrives on.
Whether the studio leans into ensemble energy or casts another A-lister remains to be seen.
For now, Helldivers continues its march toward theaters — just without its previously announced star.
