Fans Want Adria Arjona as Wonder Woman — Not “Wasted” on Maxima

Photos of Adria Arjona in a red dress at Thursday’s Supergirl premiere — on the arm of boyfriend Jason Momoa, who plays Lobo in the film — have DC fans reviving a wish that’s followed the Andor star for more than a year: that James Gunn hand her Wonder Woman instead of Maxima in Man of Tomorrow.

The reaction online was immediate.

Shots of Arjona in a plunging red gown set off a fresh round of “she should be Diana Prince” posts, and the underlying sentiment from a big chunk of DC fans is blunt: sticking an actress of her profile in the supporting role of Maxima feels like a waste when they’d rather see her anchor the DCU as Wonder Woman.

What’s Actually Confirmed

Here’s the distinction that matters. Arjona being cast in Man of Tomorrow isn’t in question; that’s locked. What she’s playing is.

Variety and Deadline both reported the role as Maxima, the alien warrior queen from the planet Almerac.

But The Hollywood Reporter pointedly described it only as a “mystery role,” noting it’s unknown whether the earlier Maxima reporting is even accurate, and DC Studios declined to comment.

Translation: the studio has never officially confirmed Arjona is Maxima. That gap is exactly why the Wonder Woman chatter refuses to die.

James Gunn also hasn’t confirmed her role, which is odd considering he’s active on Threads and answers all kinds of fan questions.

Why Fans Keep Pushing for Diana

The Wonder Woman fancast isn’t a reach born from one red carpet.

Arjona has been floated as a frontrunner for the DCU’s Diana for well over a year, with scoopers among the top choices.

Gunn himself — who directed Arjona years ago on The Belko Experiment — has said on the record she’d make “a great Wonder Woman.”

And the seat is still empty.

The DCU’s Wonder Woman film is being written by Supergirl scribe Ana Nogueira, and Gunn has repeatedly stressed no one gets cast until that script is finished.

There’s even a faction of fandom convinced “Maxima” is a smokescreen, a placeholder to mask a bigger reveal.

The Reality Check

It’s not as clean as fans want. Gunn already swatted down the Wonder-Woman-in-Man-of-Tomorrow angle when the casting first leaked, branding the initial report “shoddy & incorrect.”

And his position on WW casting hasn’t budged: it waits on the script.

So the honest read is the one nobody pushing the campaign wants to hear, Arjona is in Man of Tomorrow, reportedly as Maxima, with zero Wonder Woman confirmation anywhere on the horizon.

But with the role never officially pinned down, and the actress most fans want as Diana turning up looking the part at a DC premiere, this debate was always going to come roaring back.

Man of Tomorrow opens in theaters July 9, 2027. For more on the cast and everything we know, read our Man of Tomorrow guide.
