Supergirl (2026): Release Date, Cast, Box Office, Reviews — Everything We Know

Latest Update: June 4, 2026Supergirl tickets are on sale, with “early access” Fan First screenings set for June 24, and the early demand is already being fought over, including a viral AMC app “crash” claim that didn’t hold up.

DC Studios’ Supergirl flies into theaters June 26, 2026, with Milly Alcock taking the lead as Kara Zor-El in the second film of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe. Directed by Craig Gillespie and based on the acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, it’s shaping up to be one of the most argued-over movies of the year — over its budget, its box office odds, and its star. Here’s our running breakdown of everything we know, updated the moment anything breaks. Bookmark it and check back.

Supergirl Release Date

Supergirl hits theaters and IMAX across North America on June 26, 2026, with the international rollout beginning June 24. It’s the second film in the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, arriving just under a year after Superman. The film runs 1 hour 48 minutes and is rated PG-13.

Supergirl Story

Per the official Warner Bros. synopsis: when an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.

The film adapts Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s 2022 comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which takes Kara off Earth and across the galaxy — a more cosmic story than the Earth-bound Superman. She crosses paths with Ruthye, a young alien girl seeking revenge for her father’s death, and the two set out together. Gunn has described this Kara as harder-edged than past versions, shaped by years spent watching her home planet die before she ever reached Earth.

Supergirl Cast and Characters

  • Milly Alcock as Supergirl / Kara Zor-El
  • Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain
  • Eve Ridley as Ruthye
  • David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Kara’s parents
  • David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman
  • Jason Momoa as Lobo

Craig Gillespie directs from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. Peter Safran and James Gunn produce for DC Studios.

Supergirl Tickets and Fan First Screenings

Supergirl tickets are on sale now ahead of the June 26 release, including IMAX and other premium formats. The film gets “early access” Fan First Screenings on Wednesday, June 24, followed by Thursday previews, before the official North American opening on Friday, June 26. International release also begins June 24.

The late on-sale timing — only about three weeks out — and the demand around it have become a story in their own right. We covered whether anybody is actually going to see it, and debunked a viral claim that Supergirl ticket demand crashed the AMC app.

Supergirl Budget and Box Office

The budget has been a fight of its own. A Forbes report floated a $200 million production cost, which James Gunn flatly dismissed as “not even a little bit true”; industry listings have since pegged it closer to $170 million. That number sets the bar for success — and the early signs aren’t encouraging.

Pre-release tracking pointed toward a worst-case-scenario opening, and later data showed fan interest dropping further. For the full math on what the film actually needs to break even, see our Supergirl breakeven breakdown.

The Supergirl Fan Backlash

Supergirl has drawn heavy online debate well ahead of release. Milly Alcock’s comments sparked a feminist backlash over her remarks, after which DCU boss Peter Safran publicly backed Alcock.

The trailers fueled their own fights, including a Snyder vs. Gunn debate over a Supergirl trailer line fans compared to Man of Steel, and Zack Snyder stoking the fire with a Bruce Wayne post as DC fans roasted the footage. Director Craig Gillespie, meanwhile, has compared the movie to Marvel’s Iron Man.

Supergirl Trailers

DC Studios released a teaser in December 2025 — the one where Kara spends her 23rd birthday drinking and dancing alone — and a full trailer in April 2026. Both lean into the cosmic, road-trip tone of the Woman of Tomorrow source material.
