Supergirl box office expectations just got a lot more confusing.
Deadline reports the DC Studios movie cost $175 million net before global P&A spend and says the breakeven point is $315 million at the global box office.
The $175 million number lines up with previous estimates that put Supergirl in the $165 million to $170 million range.
The $315 million breakeven number, however, does not add up.
Using the well-known 2.5x industry standard, a $175 million production budget would put Supergirl closer to $437.5 million worldwide just to reach the usual breakeven zone.
Puck News recently made that exact point when breaking down the summer box office slate, noting executives typically look for 2.5x the production budget when measuring return on investment.
Puck estimated Supergirl at roughly $170 million and said it needs to hit $425 million, which is exactly 2.5x.
So which number is it?
Deadline Says Supergirl Needs $315 Million

There also appears to be a typo in the report, as Deadline writes $315 instead of $315 million.
Even with the obvious missing “million,” the number still raises questions.
A $315 million worldwide gross against a $175 million production budget would only be 1.8x the budget. For a major studio superhero movie with global marketing costs, theater splits, and a full worldwide release, that seems low compared to the usual math used for big-budget releases.
Studios do have other revenue streams. Supergirl will make money later from digital, streaming, TV, licensing, and other ancillary markets.
Still, the box office breakeven number usually gets discussed using the rough 2.5x rule because studios do not keep every dollar from ticket sales. Theaters take their cut, and international grosses return less to the studio than domestic grosses.
A $315 million global total would not look like a clean win for a movie that reportedly cost $175 million before marketing.
Puck Says Supergirl Needs $425 Million
Puck News recently put the Supergirl target much higher.
Scott Mendelson estimated the budget at roughly $170 million and said Supergirl needs to hit $425 million.
Puck also noted Warner Bros. would surely prefer a $500 million-plus global gross, but good reviews, good legs, and a worldwide total around $425 million could be “good enough.”
So as previously covered, what Puck is really saying is that Supergirl breaking even would be considered “good enough.”
That actually makes sense when you compare Supergirl to all the female-led superhero flicks that flopped, including Madame Web and The Marvels. So, year, breaking even is better than losing $200M.
Still, at $170 million, the 2.5x number lands at $425 million.
At $175 million, it lands at $437.5 million.
Supergirl opens in theaters and IMAX across North America on June 26, 2026. The international rollout begins June 24, 2026.
