DC Sales Skyrocket As DC Comics Goes Back To Its Roots With Rebirth

The last few years have seen both DC Comics and Marvel attempt to emulate their respective film markets, which has been a miserable failure. No longer would they be the leader inspiring ideas, but instead have become the follower.

The launch of the New 52 saw word that the movie executives were interfering with the DC Comics (specifically with Superman).

Likewise, any fan of Marvel Comics knows the once great “House of Ideas” has become a shadow of its former self. One specific example that hits home is when Marvel Comics cancelled the great Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning Marvel Cosmic titles, Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy, when they received word the movie was being green lit. DnA inspired a new billion dollar Disney franchise, but got canned for it, with Jeph Loeb and Brian Bendis reaping the rewards (nice place to work at).

Another example by Marvel is with Matt Fraction’s Thor run, as Marvel Comics caused interference by requiring mandates on Fraction when the Marvel Studios Thor movie was getting released (could also explain why Fraction left Inhumans as they appear on Agents of SHIELD).

The good news is that at least DC Comics has seen the light of day with the recent launch of their Rebirth event, which seems to have taken their publishing direction to a time prior to the New 52, and one that sees DC aiming to please the fans instead of attempting to force-feed the readers garbage they don’t want (i.e. Marvel NOW).

Sales are doing so well for Rebirth, that DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio offered up that sales for the first week of August are equivalent to their total for the entire month of April.

“When you put a number up like that, you sit and you start to giggle,” DiDio said at a recent Comic-Con presentation, reports THR. “You think, ‘Holy shit, this worked!'”

DC is also bucking the trend of subsequent issues of the comics falling in sales, as sales are increasing from second and third issues.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” DC Comics artist and co-publisher Jim Lee said.

DiDio continues with mention that sales on everything are up and further notes that lesser known books that get rave reviews are seeing sales increase.

“What we’ve seen is that, traditionally, if a book sells poorly as a periodical, it sells poorly as a trade. If it sells extraordinarily well as a periodical, it sells extraordinarily well as a trade,” he explained. “What we’ve seen is that, with the Midnighter book in particular, [which had] a lot of great press, a lot of great reviews, that’s where we’ve seen reviews really inform the sales on the graphic novel collection.”

Lee continues with mention that whenever a new movie or TV show is announced, sales for the source material go through the roof (such as Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight), but what’s interesting is that DiDio says the material based on the movies/TV doesn’t do as well.

“The interesting thing is that material that inspires media sells much better than material that is derivative of media,” DiDio said. “That’s the one thing that we see over and over. If we base a book on a movie, it will sell less than the comic or graphic novel that inspired the movie.”

The article then notes not to expect DC Comics to shell out more comics based on movies and/or TV, but take to a page from yesteryear and be the inspiration.

“That’s the key aspect of what we do in comics. We aspire others to be creative. We don’t have the numbers, the sales, to be comparative — we could be a drop in the bucket — but the source material is clearly identified as the comic books. It pushes us to be more creative — not to follow but to lead,” DiDio said.

Marvel Studios May Be Introducing Same Characters As Marvel TV Through Multiverse & Doctor Strange

We know Marvel Studios recently broke away from Ike Perlmutter and the Marvel TV/Comics goons.

This weekend at Comic-Con also saw Marvel Studios launch their own social networks and change their movie intro from comic book footage to film footage (further distancing themselves from Marvel TV/Comics).

Now it’s learned the Doctor Strange movie will be introducing the Multiverse, which is Marvel’s collection of alternate timelines and universes.

Could this be Kevin Feige’s way to use the same characters in the Marvel movies that are currently on TV?

For example, Marvel TV recently announced the car version of Ghost Rider (that no one’s thrilled about) will be on Agents Of SHIELD. Possibly going the “Multiverse,” route would mean Marvel Studios could use Dan Ketch or even Johnny Blaze. Likewise, Marvel Studios could then use a different Daredevil (etc.) in the movies. Update: Another possibility is that Feige could simply be sticking Marvel TV in the multiverse, which would free up the characters for movie use.

Another bonus with the Multiverse is that Marvel Studios could use already existing movie characters (i.e. Iron Man) using different actors and costumes (similar to what WB and DC are now doing).

CBR reports Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson confirms the Multiverse:

“What the comics did was, they brought with Doctor Strange an extra dimension into psychadelia, mysticism, and spirituality and all these very 60’s things and broke open the Marvel comic book universe into the Marvel multiverse. I think ‘Doctor Strange’ is going to be the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. It’s really serving the same function that the comic did.”

Back a few months ago even saw Charlie Cox, the Daredevil actor in the Netflix series, hint there could be a Marvel Multiverse where Marvel Studios would use a different Daredevil actor for the films:

“Marvel TV and Marvel Studios are two very different things. Even if the character were to appear in that film, that doesn’t necessarily mean that I would appear in that film.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn even confirmed the divide between Marvel Studios and Marvel TV a while back stating there is no connection between the two:

“There is Marvel TV who is pretty disconnected from Marvel Film, which is owned by Disney, and that’s really not connected at all.”

So hopefully that means we could still see Norma Reedus as Ghost Rider after all.

“Hell yeah. It would be a blast,” Reedus said about potentially playing Marvel’s Spirit of Vengeance. “Do I get a skull face that’s on fire and all that stuff? F–k yeah. I’m down.”

No Agents Of SHIELD Marvel Netflix Crossover Going To Happen

With Marvel TV being responsible for Agents Of SHIELD as well as the Marvel Netflix shows, you would think a crossover could happen at some point (even DC managed Flash and Supergirl with two different networks).

However, outside a venue at Comic-Con, it’s learned a crossover isn’t going to happen any time soon, as apparently, there happens to be some corporate mumbo jumo at Marvel TV that’s not going to allow it.

The cast of Agents Of SHIELD is asked which Marvel character they would like to “chase after” in the below video with the mention of a crossover coming up in the discussion.

Clark Gregg talks about the possibility of Agent Coulson meeting Iron Fist offering he would love to see it happen, but due to red tape, it’s not.

Because it was one of my favorite comics as a teen, I would have said Daniel Rand, Iron Fist, but suddenly there’s a gigantic invisible force-field barrier called “Corporate Stuff,” unless who knows, maybe we will develop a weapon to break through that, and get me over to Netflix for a minute. I would like that. But if that barrier came down, then God knows I’d want to talk to Luke Cage. After seeing the footage… Oh, yeah. [Mike] Colter is a beast.

Maybe this shouldn’t be all that surprising as it’s already known the “Marvel” brand at Disney is rather divided. There’s Marvel Studios, who recently feueded with the TV/comics people over the movies and parted ways. Now we even see there is some sort of divide within Marvel TV? Perhaps the contract with Netflix and/or ABC states the characters can’t appear elsewhere?

I’m surprised Disney is actually letting this happen within Marvel — that everything is so divided — which is opposite what Warner Bros. and DC are doing (Geoff Johns is the glue that binds DC). Marvel Studios also launched their own social networks and did away with their comic book opening for their movies, instead using film footage. Honestly, I can’t help but wonder if Marvel Studios will start to make more original stories (similar to Guardians of the Galaxy) and adapt less of the Marvel Comics, especially considering a lot of the comic book stories from the past 10-20 years were headed by the Marvel TV guys. With Marvel Studios being such a success (and TV/Comics no so much), I wouldn’t mind if Disney would bring everything at Marvel under Feige’s fold.

You know what they say about a house divided, right, Bob Iger?

Marvel Reveals New Captain America 75th Anniversary Statue Details

Marvel released further information on the debut of the Captain America 75th anniversary statue at Comic-Con. The statue will be on display at the Marvel Booth (#2329) prior to making its home in Brookyn. See full details below.

MARVEL UNVEILS NEW DETAILS ON TRIBUTE STATUE CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF CAPTAIN AMERICA

Heroic 13-Foot Statue Debuts at San Diego Comic Con Before Journeying to Steve Rogers’ Birthplace of Brooklyn, NY

Marvel and Comicave Studios also issue new Custom Comic Integrating the Statue into a new Captain America Story

Glendale, Calif. (July 20, 2016) – Since his creation in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, Captain America has gone through numerous evolutions, but always remains as one of the world’s most influential and inspiring Super Heroes. Kicking off a new phase of the year-long celebration of 75 years of Captain America, Marvel Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media have unveiled a slate of heroic activations taking place at San Diego Comic-Con and beyond to honor the First Avenger, along with a wide range of celebratory merchandise.

Headlining the Captain America 75th anniversary celebration, Marvel has collaborated with high-end collectibles maker Comicave Studios to create a one-of-a-kind Captain America statue that will be displayed at the Marvel booth #2329 at Comic-Con International on July 20. Comicave Studios worked closely with Marvel artists in New York and a Brooklyn-based sculptor to design the bronze tribute, standing at over 13 feet and weighing 1 ton. The statue will continue to stand tall on the show floor throughout San Diego Comic-Con for photo ops with fans, and 1/12-scale bronze replicas of the statue will be available for purchase. Plus, a custom comic book was created by Marvel Publishing writers and artists to integrate the statue into new storytelling. This one-of-a-kind comic will be available in limited quantities at San Diego Comic-Con and future Captain America events.

Following SDCC, the commemorative statue will journey via truck across the country to Brooklyn, NY – the hometown of Steve Rogers – for a limited engagement in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Fans can follow the truck along its cross-country route through photos on social media sites like Marvel and StyledByMarvel Instagram. The statue will be on display in the Children’s Corner of Prospect Park for a two-week temporary installation, kicking off with a dedication ceremony and community event on August 10th from 1-3pm. In the evening, a special viewing of the recent blockbuster film, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, will take place in Prospect Park as part of the culmination of the Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams’ “A Summer Movie Under the Stars” program, which will be airing four Captain America-focused movies every Wednesday from July 20th to August 10th.

“To the rest of America and the world, he’s Captain America; to us, he’ll always be Steve Rogers, ‘just a kid from Brooklyn,’” said Borough President Adams. “Brooklyn is proud to be the base of celebrations for Cap’s 75th anniversary, which will be capped by a larger-than-life statue traveling around our borough — befitting of this larger-than-life character. Prospect Park is the place to be this summer to enjoy the Captain America!”

After the half-month stop in Prospect Park, the Captain America statue will move to the plaza outside Barclays Center on Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues for September, during which several Marvel fan activations take place. From late October through the remainder of the year, the statue will adorn the soon-to-be-opened Bed Bath & Beyond® in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Fans of all ages will enjoy a specially re-designed statue base, for heightened interactivity and photo opportunities with Captain America, as well as see and shop for a variety of unique Marvel items, including limited quantities of scaled replicas of the bronze statue itself.

“Since 1941 Captain America has remained one of the most influential Super Heroes in comic book history,” said Paul Gitter, senior vice president, licensing, Marvel at Disney Consumer Products. “He has evolved as a character throughout the years, but remains constant as a moral compass within the Marvel Universe and leader of the Avengers. The tribute statue and other activations are the perfect way to honor 75 years of this iconic Super Hero and to celebrate the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.”

Also joining the 75th celebration at San Diego Comic-Con are Marvel’s leading merchandise partners including Hasbro, Funko, and Jakks Pacific who will be commemorating “Cap” through new collectibles. As previously announced, Comicave Studios will also be offering different scales of replicas of the bronze statue itself at San Diego Comic-Con. Additional licensees including Mad Engine, Mighty Fine, Freeze, C-Life, Her Universe, What’s Your Passion, Nick Graham, Café Press, Jay Franco, Kiddesigns, HJC Helmets and more will all feature new Captain America merchandise at major retailers this Fall. These collections will highlight Captain America’s iconic shield and cover categories including apparel and accessories for kids, women and men, home goods, electronics, and toys. There will even be new Brooklyn-themed artwork available for a range of apparel and accessories.

Comic Book News Marvel

Hallelujah! Marvel Teases Bendis Off Guardians of the Galaxy!

We’ve been waiting for this news for about six years!

Ever since Bendis nabbed Guardians of the Galaxy out from underneath Abnett and Lanning, the comic hasn’t been the same since.

Marvel Cosmic under Bendis and Loeb became a shadow of its former self, a joke, a mockery, a parody of the quality cosmic titles this site was built upon.

Now with the latest issue of Guardians of the Galaxy tanking further in sales, a new Marvel NOW! teaser has been revealed suggesting Bendis will be off the title.

The image features the words “Guardians of the Galaxy Grounded” with “The Epic Final Arc.”

The only thing epic about it is that Bendis is finally getting the boot. His entire run on the book has been grounded!

Interestingly enough, Marvel Comics has also teased the return of Richard Rider in a brand new Nova #1.

It looks like it’s the return of Marvel Cosmic that we all know and love!

Prior to the Guardians of the Galaxy movie getting green lit, Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy spearheaded Marvel Cosmic. That all changed when Bendis and Loeb decided to cash in on the titles, cancelling them and canning DnA off the books.

The only disappointing news surrounding the whole thing is the fact that Dan Abnett recently went exclusive with DC Comics, meaning he won’t be writing for Marvel.

More than likely with Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hitting theaters next May, Marvel Comics will do another relaunch. Hopefully Bendis is off the book and away from Marvel Cosmic completely!

It would also be nice to get former Marvel Comics editor Stephen Wacker off the Disney Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon, which has been atrocious.

That said, I’m stilling remaining cautious about the whole thing, which is due to the way Axel Alonso, Tom Brevoort, Dan Buckley, Jeph Loeb, Brian Bendis and Stephen Wacker have treated the fans and the material.

The creative team on Nova has yet to be announced.

New X-Men TV Series Headed To Fox With Bryan Singer Attached

A new X-Men TV series is headed to FOX.

Variety reports the untitled X-Men series will be executive produced by Bryan Singer focusing “on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.”

The new X-Men series, Marvel and Fox’s first, is being written by Burn Notice‘s Matt Nix who will also serve as executive producer in addition to Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.

The project has received a put-pilot commitment from Fox, which means if Fox doesn’t air the pilot episode, they’ll pay a hefty monetary penalty to Marvel (so it’s a safe bet the series is a definite go).

“Developing a Marvel property has been a top priority for the network — and we are so pleased with how Matt Nix has led us into this thrilling universe,” said David Madden, president, entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “There’s comic book adventure, emotional and complicated relationships and a rich, existing mythology from which to draw. With the brilliant production crew behind this project, it has all the makings of a big, fun and exciting new series.”

“Working with Marvel on a television series for Fox has been a professional dream for our head of development, Michael Thorn, and all of us at the studio,” commented Jonathan Davis, president, creative affairs, 20th Century Fox Television. “Matt, Lauren, Bryan, Simon, Jeph and Jim are a powerhouse team of creative artists, and we can’t wait to get started on what will easily be one of this development season’s most exciting new projects.”

“Marvel Television is thrilled to be co-producing with 20th Century Fox Television on our first project,” Jeph Loeb said. “Matt’s a huge fan of ‘X-Men’ and his take on ‘X-Men,’ with its rich characters and high-stakes adventure, is exactly the show we want on Fox. It’s a great team of creative producers who will be making something entirely unique.”

The report also mentions the planned Hellfire TV series has been cancelled.

Legion is also set to debut on FX.

Marvel Comics Teases Return Of Richard Rider Nova

Got mentioned by James Gunn on Facebook live.

Won my kid’s baseball championship game.

And now, apparently, Marvel Comics is teasing the return of Richard Rider Nova.

Not a bad birthday!

Leaked promo art has hit the net from a Marvel NOW! Previews Magazine, with one image featuring Richard Rider Nova’s helmet stating “Coming Soon.”

The checklist also seems to be stating a new Richard Rider Nova #1 will be launched as part of Marvel NOW!, though the creative team looks to be unknown (too bad Dan Abnett just went DC exclusive).

Could we be seeing the return of some quality Marvel Cosmic?

Well, Marvel also announced a new Thanos ongoing from Jeff Lemire with art by Mike Deodato.

So if the Richard Rider Nova comic holds true, that sounds like at least two new Marvel Cosmic comics too look forward to.

People have already asked my thoughts about it on Twitter and in the forums.

Honestly, I’m taking a wait and see approach. Marvel, under Buckley, Alonso, Quesada, Brevoort, Bendis and Loeb, have really taken a dump on Cosmic. They cancelled the DnA Marvel Cosmic titles when the Guardians of the Galaxy movie got greenlit, and they turned the stuff into a big joke. The good news is that it didn’t sell well. I think the latest issue of NINO is around 15k or so. Bendis’ Garbage of the Galaxy, without all its million variant covers and such, is even under 35K. Abnett and Lanning’s Marvel Cosmic always had steady sales, and the editor even said sales were “rock solid.”

Marvel Comics, at least for me, still has a lot to do prove itself.

I’m hopeful, but also skeptic.

Long live Richard Rider.

Captain America Gets Bronze Statue For 75th Anniversary At Comic-Con

For Captain America’s 75th Anniversary, Marvel is unveiling a 13-foot-tall bronze statue at this month’s San Diego Comic-Con.

The Captain America statue will then be on display at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park for a dedication ceremony on Aug. 10th.

The Captain America statue has yet to be revealed, but USA Today showed off the following concept art.

“For the past 75 years, Captain America has inspired generations of fans serving as the ultimate global icon for freedom, strength and doing the right thing,” Paul Gitter, senior vice president of licensing for Marvel at Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media, said.

It’s noted the statue weights a ton and also features a line from the Captain America: The First Avenger movie: “I’m just a kid from Brooklyn.”

Captain America was created back in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon.

“We hope that when fans see the statue, they will think back to a favorite comic book, treasured action figure or even be transported back to a special time and place in their lives where Captain America’s values played influence,” Gitter said.

Comic-Con runs July 20-24.

Skrulls Are Owned By Both Marvel Studios & Fox Says James Gunn

Just in case you didn’t know, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn says the Skrulls are co-owned by both Marvel Studios and Fox Studios (similar to Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver).

Gunn took to Twitter to answer a fan’s question about the Skrulls where he also reveals certain members of the shape-changing alien reptilian race are specificially owned by Fox.

“Some specific Skrulls are at Fox. But the Skrulls as a whole are co-owned,” Gunn said.

While James Gunn didn’t mention the specific Skrulls, we can probably assume those Skrulls with names are owned by Fox, such as the Super-Skrull Kl’rt.

Whether or not Marvel ever uses the Skrulls in a movie is probaby doubtful as Marvel used the Ultimate Comics version of the Skrulls in The Avengers with the Chitauri.

It’s also probably a safe bet Marvel Studios won’t be adapting the Marvel Comics “Secret Invasion” storyline any time soon as it was written by Brian Bendis, a member of the Marvel Comics creative committee that Kevin Feige recently booted from having any involvement in the Marvel movies. Bendis also took the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book away from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning when word of the movie getting green lit became known.

Justin Kucsulain Teases The Sentry

It’s been rumored a movie based on The Sentry might be in the works, and now an actor is seemingly teasing the role.

Justin Kucsulain, who actually had a unnamed role in Iron Man 3 (played a guard), took to his Instagram account to post images of The Sentry Marvel comic books and an action figure.

“Gathered some amazing reading material today,” Kucsulain posted a week ago, adding a “wink” to the post.

Of course it’s possible Justin Kucsulain may just be having some fun with the fans and reading up on the character, but you have to admit the actor does resemble Robert Reynolds, aka The Sentry. Kucsulain also played Ethan on The Walking Dead.

The Sentry is basically Marvel’s equivalent to Superman, but with a dark twist. I actually wouldn’t mind seeing the Dark Avengers on the big screen.

Other Marvel Phase 4 rumors included Nova.

Roland Emmerich Slams Superman, DC & Marvel Movies Again

Once again, Independence Day director Roland Emmerich slams comic book movies with specific mention of DC, Marvel and Superman.

Emmerich goes so far as to claim the comic book movies have been ripping him off (via Loaded Online).

“I felt that when I saw some of these Marvel movies, or DC movies from Warners, I felt, ‘Oh my, God, that looks familiar to me. Why is Superman bashing so many buildings?'”

“I was actually warned already by Steven Spielberg that this will happen. He said Independence Day will be the most imitated film of the next 20 years, and he was right. Smart man.

Emmerich also is asked if he would be interested in directing a comic book movie and responds as follows:

“Very early in my career I was offered one or two of those, but it’s not my kind of film. I grew up in Germany and we weren’t big on superheroes to begin with. Actually, they didn’t work as well as everywhere else in the world. Only now they work very well. I just also felt that I wanted to make my own films. I pride myself to make originals. Even Independence Day: Resurgence is, I think, quite original for a sequel because it’s more the continuation of the story.”

Emmerich also previously said he doesn’t like capes.

Independence Day: Resurgence opened this week in theaters at #2 behind Finding Dory and is currently rated 34% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Marvel and Fox Talks Rumored Again (Avengers & X-Men)

Once again it’s being said that Marvel and Fox could potentially come to an understanding.

It’s been rumored that an Avengers and X-Men movie is in the works for quite a while now.

Even the X-Men execs have stated they are interested in working with Marvel.

Now the latest comes from a producer on Kevin Smith’s Fatman on Batman podcast, Matt Key.

Matt Key doesn’t go so far as to make claims that an Avengers and X-Men movie is happening, but he does at least say there has been talk at Fox about hooking up with Marvel.

“I’ve heard from a few of my sources, my little birds that Fox and Marvel have… kind of talked, but not really, but like there’s interest from Fox, like, ‘Ooh, y’know, what they did with Sony and Spider-Man is actually pretty cool, like, maybe…’ We’re years away from that ever possibly happening… but I think that’s what it would take… Fox joining hands with Marvel…”

If Spider-Man: Homecoming happens to be a billion dollar success, that may give Fox further incentive to work with Marvel.

As noted, if it ever does happen, it looks to be years off.

However, the Avengers and X-Men movie rumor did state 2020, so that’s at least four years away.

Independence Day’s Roland Emmerich Slams Marvel Movies & Superman

Roland Emmerich, known for directing the Independence Day movies, White House Down and The Patriot, isn’t a big fan of superhero movies.

Actually, it doesn’t sounds as if Emmerich is a fan of them at all and specifically mentions Marvel.

“When you look at my movies it’s always the regular Joe Schmo that’s the unlikely hero. A lot of Marvel movies, they show people in funny suits running around,” Emmerich said, reports the UK’s Mirror.

Emmerich continues with what sounds like a dig on Superman as well.

I don’t like people in capes. I find it silly when someone dons a superhero suit and flies. I don’t understand it. I grew up in Germany, that’s probably why,” Emmerich said.

Roland Emmerich’s next movie, Independence Day: Resurgence, gets this released this Friday. It’s probably safe to assume a regular Joe Schmo saves the day in the film.
