It’s again being speculated that Hugh Jackman will return one last time as Wolverine for The Avengers: Endgame, which is due to a Google search result listing the film in the actor’s credits.
Typing “famous Hugh Jackman movies” into Google search brings up a listing of the Wolverine actor’s films, which includes The Avengers: Endgame at the front, which has led to some fans questioning if Jackman will be in the flick (update: my results are no longer showing the listing).
Google appears to be in error, as for how their search results work is their bots scrape data from across the web and gather the information and aggregate it into their search engine results. Apparently, someone trolled the Hugh Jackman Wiki page (Ryan Reynolds, was that you?) and listed Jackman as voicing Deadpool in The Avengers: Endgame. It appears Google picked up on the info on Wiki and listed Avengers 4 as part of Jackman’s results.
So as of now, it doesn’t appear that Hugh Jackman is in The Avengers: Endgame, but…
Hugh Jackman has previously been rumored to be a part of The Avengers 4, as back in December of 2017 saw AICN report the Disney-Fox deal was already done and that “we may see Hugh Jackman return to Wolverine” for Avengers: Endgame.
What is actually interesting about all this talk of Jackman returning as Wolverine is that he said the only way he would return to the role is if it was with The Avengers.
“The Avengers would prove too much to turn down. Because I always love the idea of [Wolverine] within that dynamic, with the Hulk obviously, with Iron Man, but there are a lot of smarter people with MBAs who can’t figure that out [laughter]. You never know. At the moment, honestly, if I really did have them there, I probably wouldn’t have said this is the last,” Jackman said following the release of Logan.
Jackman had more to say in an interview with Collider back in December 2017 as well.
“It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together. And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head. But it was like, “Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,” and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline — it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously — I was like, “Hang on!” But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”
“Never before have I felt the landscape so bare — maybe I should be worried about that,” the actor of the stage and screen now tells Collider. “But… I just finished, wrapped a film with Jason Reitman called The Front Runner, which is a political comedy and I do feel right now very open and excited to have no idea what is coming next.”
Mark Ruffalo also said earlier this year that he wants Hugh Jackman in the MCU.
“Well, of course, there’s always the Banner-Black Widow combo, which I think is always a good combination. It’d be cool to see — I mean, people talk a lot about Wolverine and Hulk hooking up, I think that would be a really great combo,” Mark Ruffalo told The Marvelists podcast. “And I love Hugh [Jackman], and it would be cool to do something with him, if he’s up to doing it. He’s always teased Hulk versus Wolverine would be pretty fun.”
The latest also saw Ryan Reynolds confirm he is trying to get Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine, as the next Deadpool films will be team-ups with other characters.
Regarding the possibility of Hugh Jackman actually appearing in The Avengers: Endgame? Since Disney’s purchase of Fox Studios is set to go through by this Spring (some reports state as early as this month), it could very well be possible from a legal standpoint. In addition, Marvel and Fox previously made a deal for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to use Ego and Deadpool to use Negasonic Teenage Warhead, so some sort of new deal wouldn’t be unheard of.
Now what should probably be questioned is should Marvel use Jackman in The Avengers: Endgame? There seems to be a lot going on to begin with, as Avengers 4 is a culmination of the previous ten years of the Marvel movies, it is a sequel to Infinity War, it features Brie Larson and Captain Marvel and potentially other new characters, so how would Wolverine fit? What should also be considered is you have to assume this would be a one-off appearance for Jackman, as doubtfully he would continue the role for years to come in the MCU. That said, this does look like the last opportunity to have Jackman as Wolverine side-by-side the original Avengers as their contracts expire, with it speculated at least Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are done for. Perhaps Kevin Feige will give fans what they want by using Hugh Jackman alongside the Avengers in some sort of alternate timeline or universe scene? An MCU what if (or what could have been)?
With the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters coming to Marvel Studios, there is no doubt Wolverine will eventually be a part of the MCU. It has been said Marvel is excited to recast the character. If not Hugh Jackman, who?
