New X-Men Filming Details Rumored To Be False? But…

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22994:]]

A couple of days ago saw a report come out of Montreal that Fox has made plans to film another X-Men movie in the city, which would be the third film following X-Men: Days Of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse.

The head of the production studio in Montreal confirmed the news.

Now the Collider web site is stating the “recent report is absolutely false” as they reached out to “a very trusted source.” The report mentions:  “No plans have been made to start filming the X-Men: Apocalypse sequel in Montreal in 2017, and Singer has not signed on to direct.”

Honestly, this sounds like Collider providing spin for Fox and Singer as Montreal’s Mels Studios president, Michel Trudel, stated that convinicing Fox to come back for a second X-Men movie (Apocalypse) and also a third X-Men movie is amazing.

Would the guy be lying (lol)?

The Collider speculates as a reason why the Montreal rumor is not true is because the franchise’s stars – Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Nicholas Hoult – contracts are up for renegotations. My response to that: So what? Fox has already signed younger actors on board X-Men: Apocalypse, who you can bet on are on board for mutiple movies. I’ve said it a couple times before, so it’s worth stating again: If the franchise actors aren’t coming back, you can bet the X-Men universe is getting a reboot due to whatever happens in X-Men: Apocalypse. We already know Hugh Jackman is done as Wolverine, so this would be the perfect time to introduce new younger actors for the roles.

Collider also argues that Singer may be doing 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea; however, while that may be true, Singer himself confirmed the future of the X-Men universe as well as stating he is still involved.

We’ll eventually find out, but I’m not buying this “Fox isn’t filming another X-Men movie” in Montreal rumor.

I guess Collider may be “technically” correct that the “sequel” to X-Men: Apocalypse won’t be filmed there — if it’s a new X-Men reboot movie altogether, eh? Note: The Montreal report didn’t specifically state the third X-Men movie to be filmed there is a sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse, just the third in the saga.

Simon Kinberg Compares X-Men Legion TV Series To Breaking Bad

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22988:]]

Fox is currently developing two new TV series based on X-Men properties with Hellfire Club and Legion.

Now we get some details from X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg about the series as well as Gambit.

Regarding Gambit, Kinberg describes it as a “heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way.”

Kinberg told Collider the following about Legion and Hellfire Club, going so far as to compare Legion to Breaking Bad (yes, Kinberg was involved with Fantastic Four).

“Legion and Hellfire are both super active. Hellfire we’re hoping to be shooting at the beginning of next year, the pilot. It’s been extraordinary working with Noah Hawley [on Legion], who I think is a straight up genius. Actually the idea forLegion, it began in conversations with Lauren Schuler Donnerand Bryan Singer and Noah me, but I remember I was actually in Moscow last year about to go into a dinner, I was there for the Days of Future Past premiere, and I was sitting in a car outside a restaurant about to go into dinner. It was really early on in the process, like one of the first conversations, and Noah and I were on a call just the two of us just riffing ideas, and I was sitting outside what I thought was gonna be like a 10 minute call and I ended up sitting out there for three and a half hours, missing the dinner. Everybody had not only had the dinner but went home, and I just got off that call being like, ‘It’s midnight in Moscow but we have to make this show with this guy because he’s so brilliant.’ So that’s really ramping up now, the production’s ramping up to start shooting at the beginning of the year with FX.”

“I mean the thing that’s cool and that’s the hope in branching out to TV is that we can tell these X-Men stories in a slightly different way and even with a slightly different tone. It’s one of the thing we’re kind of doing in the different movie franchises. I mean Deadpool obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies. The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas Deadpool is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways. And Gambit will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way. So the TV shows give us an opportunity to go even further and certainly what I’m seeing on Legion with Noah and FX is an intent to do something completely original in the genre, in some ways to sort of blow up the paradigm of comic book or superhero stories and almost do our Breaking Bad of superhero stories.”

“The Hellfire script we have an amazing writing team, really two writing teams working together on it, and also that will shoot next year.”

X-Men Legion TV Series Details Revealed

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22513:]]

Marvel and Fox recently announced two X-Men TV series with Legion and the Hellfire Club. Regarding the former, which features Professor Xavier’s schizophrenic son David Haller, showrunner Noah Hawley recently offered up some details while speaking with TV Insider including that the series will start shooting at the end of January or the beginning of February.

Probably the biggest eye-opener about the press release was the absence of “X-Men” or “mutants,” and Hawley offers up the reasoning, at least in regards to his Legion TV series.

It’s interesting; I do think that the show needs to stand on its own two feet. The people who care that it’s an X-Men title are going to know it’s an X-Men title. You’re looking for the largest possible and most diverse audience, so that’s not the most important thing. The most important thing is the show itself.

It’s also wondered how both shows will tie into the X-Men movie universe — if at all.

[Legion is] conceived more as a standalone. I don’t want to say too much more about it on that level, but certainly it’s not constructed as a back-door anything. It’s more just that there’s a story that I want to explore that has to fit into that larger universe, which is exciting.

Hawley continues with mention that Legion will basically stand on its own while also hinting that Hellfire Club may be tied more to the movie universe.

We certainly haven’t had any conversations about crossovers. I don’t know anything about it, but I think that one is more linearly taken out of the world of the movies. Ours has its own world to it.

The interview also reveals that Fox does own the X-Men TV rights, but did have to work things out with Marvel.

It’s been in the works for a long time. Some of that was Marvel dealmaking process. Fox has rights to make movies and sort of tacitly the rights to do TV, but they’ve never done it before so they had to work out all the details.

FX Productions is the lead studio. My relationship is with FX primarily, and I’m just getting to know Jeph Loeb and the people at Marvel, and I think it’s going to be collaboration in the best sense.

Hawley also offers what he likes about Legion and offers a possible direction of the series:

What I really like about him is, here’s a character who is schizophrenic on some level, a character struggling with mental illness. Is he crazy or does he have these powers? The answer is, kind of both. I’m a big believer that the structure of a story should reflect the content of the story. And so I liked the idea that if you have a character that doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not real, that is also the audience’s journey.

Fantastic Four Movie Rights Rumored To Return To Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22476:]]

With the recent announcement of two X-Men TV series in development, which sees X-Men producers working side-by-side Marvel execs, now it’s rumored the Fantastic Four movie rights have returned to Marvel.

According to Den Of Geek, Marvel okayed the two X-Men TV series, Legion and Hellfire Club, in exchange for the Fantastic Four movie rights.

It’s said a new Fantastic Four movie is planned for 2020, and is one of the three new Marvel movies that were just announced.

It’s also worth mentioning that Stan Lee will have a cameo in X-Men: Apocalypse – for the first time in ten years – which further signifes relations between Marvel and Fox are improved.

An Avengers/X-Men movie has also been rumored for 2020.

If the rumor of Fantastic Four holds true, lets hope that also means the Silver Surfer and Galactus go with it, as it was previously said Marvel wanted those characters and offered an extension of the Daredevil rights in exchange. The deal never went through and DD eventually returned to Marvel leading to the Netflix TV series.

If FF is also back at Marvel that may also mean its villains – such as Annihilius – would return, which would make it possible for Marvel Studios to adapt the fan-favorite Annihilation Marvel Cosmic comics event from 2005/6 starring Richard Rider Nova. The series spawned Guardians of the Galaxy.

Fox’s recent Fantastic Four was a huge flop at the box office only generating $166 million with poor reviews including a dismal 9% positive rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

Update: The original source of the article has been updated with mention the deal includes the rights to villains Galactus and Doctor Doom, as well as the Silver Surfer.

Update #2: Collider is reporting the rumor is false and is stating Fox already owned the TV rights; however, that contradicts what Fox said about being in negotiations with Marvel about a live-action X-Men series (meaning Fox doesn’t own the TV rights and Marvel needs to give the okay).

Update #3: Representatives for Fox are stating the rumored Fantastic Four deal is not true.

Update #4: Likewise, reps for Marvel are stating the rumor is not true.

Marvel & Fox Developing X-Men’s Hellfire Club TV Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22466:]]

Hot on the heels of the Legion FX TV series announcement, now Marvel has announced a new FOX TV series based on the X-Men’s Hellfire Club.

Similar to the Legion announcement, once again we see no mention of the X-Men or mutants in the official info, but the X-Men producers are on board the project as well.

In the comics, the Hellfire Club members include Sebastian Shaw, Emma Frost, Harry Leland, Donald Pierce, Tessa, Selene, Magneto, Storm, Shinobi Shaw, Trevor Fitzroy, Madelyne Pryor, Sat-yr-9, Phoenix and Sunspot.

Info:

FOX is in development on an action-adventure series HELLFIRE (working title), it was announced today by David Madden, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.

Set in the late 1960s, the series — which will be produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Marvel Television, with 20th Century Fox handling the physical production — follows a young Special Agent who learns that a power-hungry woman with extraordinary abilities is working with a clandestine society of millionaires – known as “The Hellfire Club” – to take over the world.

“We are thrilled to partner with Marvel to bring this world to television and build upon the vibrant mythology that has captivated fans for years,” said Madden. “These powerful and dynamic characters are complicated and larger-than-life, the pace and visual imagination are unrelenting, and the story takes place during one of the most explosive eras in recent history. We are so looking forward to working with this incredibly talented team.”

“HELLFIRE is a unique opportunity to be able to go deeper with some of these extraordinary characters, but to also dramatize new characters and give TV viewers a chance to experience this expanded world in an explosive way that everyone will be talking about,” commented Jonathan Davis, President, Creative Affairs, 20th Century Fox Television.  “The action at the center of HELLFIRE will be dynamic and will satisfy the rabid fans, but that said, newcomers will surely be addicted too!”

HELLFIRE is a co-production of 20th Century Fox Television and Marvel Television. Evan Katz (“24: Live Another Day”), Manny Coto (“24”), Patrick McKay (“Star Trek 3”) and JD Payne (“Star Trek 3”) are co-creators. McKay and Payne will write the pilot script, based on a story by Katz, Coto, McKay and Payne. Lauren Shuler Donner (“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “The Wolverine”), Bryan Singer (“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “X-Men: Apocalypse”), Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Fantastic Four”), Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, “Marvel’s Daredevil”) and Jim Chory (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Marvel’s Daredevil”) will executive-produce the pilot, alongside Katz and Coto, who will serve as showrunners.

Marvel & FX Developing X-Men’s Legion TV series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22465:]]

Per the official info below, Marvel and FX are developing a new TV series based on the X-Men character Legion, who in the comics is Professor X’s estranged son, David Charles Haller, who is an omega-level mutant suffering from a multiple personality disorder.

Interestingly enough, the info makes no mention of Professor X, mutants or the X-Men (possibly because Fox owns the movie rights), though we do see X-Men producers Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg are involved.

This may be a good sign for the live-action Fox X-Men TV series as well, as Marvel would need to sign off on that project.

It may also signify that relations between Fox and Marvel are improved — following the rumors of eccentric billionaire Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter being at odds with Fox over the Marvel-licensed characters at the studio.

There has also been a rumor of an Avengers/X-Men movie for 2020.

Update: Fox and Marvel are developing a HellFire TV series.

Legion info:

FX Networks has ordered the pilot for Legion, the story of a troubled young man who may be more than human, it was announced today by Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, Presidents of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions.

The pilot introduces the story of David Haller: Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.

Noah Hawley (Fargo, Bones) will write the pilot and serve as an Executive Producer along with Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Wolverine), Bryan Singer (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Superman Returns), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Martain), Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Daredevil), Jim Chory (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Daredevil) and John Cameron (Fargo, The Big Lebowski).

The pilot for Legion will be produced by FX Productions and Marvel Television, with FXP handling the physical production.

“Legion is just the sort of ambitious story that Noah excels at,” Grad said. “His adaption of Fargo for television was one of the most acclaimed television events in recent memory. It’s also an honor to partner with Marvel on Legion and to enlist such an accomplished team of Executive Producers to create this pilot.”

Legion is the latest project from Hawley and Cameron, two of the Executive Producers of the Emmy and Golden Globe -winning FX limited series Fargo.

Bryan Cranston Wants To Play X-Men Villain

Bryan Cranston recently stated he wanted to play a “nasty” Marvel villain, and now while appearing at the New York Comi-Con on Sunday drops the name of a classic Marvel bad guy.

Cranston was on hand to promote his new SuperMansion series where the topic was brought up.

“What do you think?” Cranston asked the crowd, which caused them to go wild, notes IGN.

“It intrigues me to be able to play a character that hasn’t been on film before, so you can create it from the beginning,” Cranston said about Mr. Sinister.

Cranston is known for playing the bad guy in Breaking Bad with Walter White. Maybe we’ll see Sinister as a future villain in an upcoming X-Men movie following X-Men: Apocalypse, which hits next year.

Of course it’s always possible Rogue could be recast, but it’s probably more feasible that Rogue isn’t even in the script as Léa Seydoux is rumored to be playing the lead role as Gambit’s love interest, Bella Donna.

Anna Paquin recently appeared as Rogue in X-Men: Days Of Future Past and saw additional footage added in the “Rogue Cut” version.

Gambit has an October 7, 2016 release. Fox is currently looking for a new director following the departure of Rupert Wyatt.

Bryan Singer Confirms X-Men Future; Announces 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22163:]]

Following X-Men: Apocalypse, Bryan Singer will be tackling the Jules Verne classic 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

Singer posted a pic of the script on Instagram which also sees mention he is sticking with the X-Men universe.

It’s my 50th birthday (ouch), and I just put the finishing touches on the script for my next film. A story I’ve wanted to retell since childhood. I promise this will be an epic and emotional adventure for all ages! An adventure very dear to my heart. Not abandoning the #xmen universe. Very excited about #xmenapocalypse and beyond. #julesverne #20000leaguesunderthesea #nemo

Amazon describes the book as:

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is a classic science fiction novel by French writer Jules Verne published in 1870. It tells the story of Captain Nemo and his submarine Nautilus, as seen from the perspective of Professor Pierre Aronnax after he, his servant Conseil, and Canadian whaler Ned Land wash up on their ship. On the Nautilus, the three embark on a journey which has them going all around the world, under the sea.

X-Men: Apocalypse has a May 27, 2016 release date. Fox also has Deadpool getting released on February 12, 2016, Gambit on October 7, 2016 and the third Wolverine on March 3, 2017. The next X-Men film has yet to be announced.

Simon Kinberg Says Apocalypse’s Costume Is Cosmic

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22142:]]

Suffice to say there has just be a tad bit of outcry regarding the look of Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse.

When the first images were released the internet exploded with comparisons to the Power Rangers bad guy, Ivan Oooze.

And I think rightfully so.

Honestly, I can’t believe how someone could be a part of a multi-million dollar movie and actually approve of the look.

Yeah, it’s that bad.

Now the latest is that MTV caught up with writer and producer Simon Kinberg – who also worked on Fantastic Four – asking what’s up with Apocalypse’s costume. Here’s what he had to say:

I feel like we have been, the ’X-Men’ franchise, has been growing a little bit more into science fiction. I think ’Days of Future Past’ with time travel and the Sentinels took us into a slightly broader, more science fiction world than the films had occupied in the past,” he said. “We felt like the movies were ready for something that was slightly more, let’s say, cosmic. Once we made the decision for Apocalypse to be the villain at the center of the movie, we wanted to be true to the comics, which are sort of, like you, say, not costume, but it’s not just a guy in a helmet. It is more cosmic.”

First, Kinberg mentioning the Sentinels in X-Men: Days Of Future Past isn’t a good sign in my book as their designs in the movie were pretty bad as well. The older ones were akin to some kind of 1970s dryer, and the future versions were straight out of Thor. Kinberg actually says they want to be true to the comics — but they never are; not with the X-Men costumes, not with Wolverine, the Sentinels, and definitely not with Apocalypse. Three strikes, you’re out, dude. Wait, that’s at least four.

Kinberg does say the look of Apocalypse in the movie is based on cosmic. That’s rather interesting as there was a rumor a while back that Apocalypse himself was actually alien (which Singer debunked); however, Kinberg may be hinting toward Apocalypse using the Celestials tech that’s used in the comics. I will say, that Kinberg calling the look of the Apocalypse costume “cosmic” comes off as insulting coming from a cosmic fan.

Fans have also been wondering if Apocalypse will change his size in the movie. An interview a while back with Oscar Isaac saw mention they are going to make it their own thing (which is never good), which seemed to insinuate Apocalypse won’t be all that large in nature.

We had to do some adjustments here and there and be like, alright, maybe this is too alien. He also is someone who people would want to follow and not just be terrified of. So the balance, and then making sure that there’s some great elements from the comic but also making our own thing as well. In the comic, he generally is like 12 feet, 600 pounds.

While there is a lot of negative talk surrounding the look of Apocalypse, in Singer and Kinberg’s defense, there were similar thoughts surrounding Evan Peters’ Quicksilver in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and we all know Quicksilver’s scene stole the show.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” has a May 27, 2016 release directed by Bryan Singer starring Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Ian McKellen, Rose Byrne, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp and Oscar Isaac.

Steven Spielberg Thinks Superhero Movies Popularity Will Come To An End

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21935:]]

Are superhero movies doomed?

If we go by Steven Spielberg’s recent statements, comic book movies are to go the way of the Western.

“We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western. It doesn’t mean there won’t be another occasion where the Western comes back and the superhero movie someday returns,” Spielberg told the AP, reports Yahoo.

Spielberg goes on to explain his thoughts in that he thinks super hero movies are part of a cycle, and that someone will eventually come up with something new.

“Of course, right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving. I’m only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture,” Spielberg offered. “There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us.”

Spielberg also previously said he feels Hollywood is headed toward an “implosion” because of the over-abundance of mega-budget movies, in which he still feels the same way.

“I do. I still feel that way,” Spielberg said.

Speaking of mega-budget movies, Spielberg was executive producer on the blockbuster Jurassic World, which had a $150 million budget of its own, and with the success of the Marvel movies, and most likely the DC movies, it doesn’t seem as if the superhero doomsday is coming any time soon.

Up next for Spielberg is the adaptation of Ready Player One in which he will direct for WB.
