Superman Man Of Steel 2 Not On The Table; But Possible (Video)

I just went over possible details for Man of Steel 2 yesterday that included Zack Snyder revealing a possible ending, and now we hear from Snyder, Henry Cavill and Batman producer Charles Roven on the potential for another Superman movie.

The bad news is that no new Superman movie is on the table, but both Zack Snyder,  Henry Cavill and Charles Roven offer it’s a possibility down the road.

I’ll say after what Snyder did with Superman in Batman Vs. Superman, I hope WB brings someone else on board who understands and is a fan of the character. Snyder is 0-for-2 in my book.

You can watch the video below as well (via IGN).

Snyder: I think if we can get a good script, it would be great to get a standalone Superman movie. I think that would be fun to do.

Cavill: I do believe it depends on the success of this movie.  If this goes well then we can start to negotiate with Warner Bros. for a standalone Superman movie.  But they’ve got their plans set out for other stuff and Justice Leagues and various other movies, so it’s about finding the time, really.  It’s something that I would be very keen to do.

Roven: We’re in the process of looking at that, but we don’t have it on the schedule at the moment because we’re quite busy with the movies that we have scheduled.

Sndyer: Part of the reason we didn’t announce a standalone superhero movie this time was to support some of the events of [Batman vs Superman].

George Miller Confirms DC Talks; No Man Of Steel 2 (Video)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22289:]]

A little over a month ago saw a rumor hit that George Miller was set to direct the sequel to Man of Steel. It was then said that Man of Steel 2 was put on permantent hold, but that Miller could direct whatever interested him. Zack Snyder even said the door was open for Miller.

Now word comes directly from the director of Mad Max: Fury Road that he isn’t directing Man of Steel 2, but George Miller does confirm talks with DC.

“There has been some of that in the mix, but I would say, probably not true,” Miller responded to DC and Man of Steel 2 questioning while talking with Digital Insider.

“I was going to do a Justice League movie that fell through in 2009,” Miller continued. “Not a fault of anybody’s fault except a new Australian govenment wasn’t agile enough with their rebates. It went indecisive. There was a writers strike. The planets didn’t align for that one, but I’ve always been interested in mythology, and the superhero movies are basically new incarnations of the greek and roman mythologies. That’s always something I’m interested in.”

Miller did note he is a DC fan as well.

“I group in an era that was mainly DC, and so they are the pantheon for me,” Miller said. “I’ve seen some of them. I obviously haven’t seen Batman Vs. Superman. I love [Zack Snyder’s] work.”

Miller also noted the next film he directs he hopes will be small.

“I hope the next film I make is a very small film without any special effects and not many stunts.”

Batman Vs. Superman is Man of Steel 2 Says Zack Snyder; Talks Justice League

Batman Vs. Superman Comic-Con Trailer

With rumors of George Miller directing a Man of Steel sequel, the question of a second Superman standalone movie is brought up to director Zack Snyder, who seems to insinuate it’s not their top priority as he makes mention Batman Vs. Superman is essentially Man of Steel 2.

Snyder, talking with Canoe.com about the Doritos contest, offered the following about Man of Steel 2 and Justice League:

I think in a way Batman v Superman is Man of Steel 2. Justice League is kind of the transcendent, knights-of-the-round-table of the story. It’d be interesting to think about what a standalone Superman movie might be.”

Regarding Justice League, Snyder also offers his thoughts about going from Dawn of the Dead back in 2004 to now doing DC movies:

“At that point I was really into (Frank Miller’s comic) The Dark Knight Returns. I don’t know that I thought about it in those terms, but if you told me that I might make a Justice League movie, I wouldn’t think that that was weird. But I don’t think I would realize what it meant to pop culture the way it has struck pop culture right now.”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22192:]]

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch and Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves. Justice League is to follow directed by Zack Snyder as well.

Synopsis:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Zack Snyder Says Door Is Open For George Miller Doing A DC Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22047:]]

Recent rumors have suggested either that George Miller is directing Man of Steel 2 or that he is at least in line for a DC movie property.

Now while promoting the Doritos Super Bowl contest in another interview, Zack Snyder tackles the rumor stating he hasn’t talked about it with Miller.

“George doing one of the DC movies? Oh my God, absolutely. George can do anything he wants, in my opinion,” Snyder told The Herald Sun. “We haven’t talked about it, and to be frank I just didn’t know what he was thinking of doing next. But yeah, if I was to think he had any interest in them of course I’m happy to talk to him.”

Snyder continues with mention that Miller would be welcome to come on board.

“Oh my God, [the door is] so open,” Snyder said.

Previously, Snyder took a couple of jabs at Marvel and Ant-Man, and now offers more.

“It’s an interesting question. I haven’t seen Ant-Man. I just haven’t had time. I’ve been so stacked, I’ve been in post, but I do want to, I have an interest in seeing it. But to me it’s like, there’s undeniable and amazing talent and entertainment in the movies they make, and Joss [Whedon] is really good. The question is whether or not — or how — the superhero genre evolves, or does it stay the same? Steven Spielberg made that comment about [superhero movies] going the way of the westerns, and my reaction is: then you’ve got to make a better movie. That’s the reality. I know that doesn’t really answer the question, but the feeling is that we can’t stay the same, that’s one thing for sure.”

Man Of Steel 2 Said To Be On Permanent Hold

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21845:]]

A recent rumor stated that George Miller will be directing Man of Steel 2.

Jon Schnepp, who recently released the The Death of ‘Superman Lives’: What Happened? documentary, dropped the news.

Now, however, the info is being contradicted as Den Of Geek is stating a source has filed them in that while it’s true George Miller is in talks with WB for a DC movie, it might not be for the Man of Steel sequel as Man of Steel 2 is on “permanent hold.” It’s said what Miller directs depends on what interests him.

Den Of Geek recently reported on the three picture Batman deal with Ben Affleck as well as the early Batman Vs. Superman screening for Warner Bros. executives.

Regarding Man of Steel 2 being on hold, there may be some validity to it as I was told a while back, WB wanted Man of Steel to hit a billion dollars at the box office and were disappointed with its $668 million gross. When it didn’t do as well as they wanted, they chose to go with Batman Vs. Superman instead of another Superman movie.

There is evidence of this as following the debut of Man of Steel, there was talk of a sequel being green lit, and in lots of interviews, Zack Snyder, David Goyer and Henry Cavill were all pushing for more Superman prior to Justice League, as well as stating Superman was their first costumed super hero and go-to guy.

Obviously things changed with the addition of Ben Affleck and Batman to the scene. From what I’ve been told, Goyer wrote a Man of Steel sequel script/treatment that was more or less combined with a standalone Batman script, which ended up becoming Batman Vs. Superman. When Affleck was brought on board, his Argo writer came with him, Chris Terrio, and did further rewrites.

Around the same time also saw Jeff Robinov forced out of WB, with Kevin Tsujihara taking over as WB CEO.

I actually recapped a lot of this in an article about the Batman Vs. Superman rumors from almost two years ago.

Regarding another Superman movie, when the Justice League slate of DC movies was announced, there was also mention of doing further Superman movies. More than likely if Batman vs. Superman is a smashing success (i.e. billion dollars), there will probably be another standalone Superman flick down the road.

George Miller Said To Be Directing Man Of Steel 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21810:]]

It’s being stated that George Miller will be directing Man of Steel 2.

The info comes from Jon Schnepp, who recently released the The Death of ‘Superman Lives’: What Happened? documentary.

Schnepp appeared on the Popcorn Talk YouTube podcast where he dropped the news.

“Yeah, George Miller,” Schnepp responded matter-of-factly when questioned about who is directing the Man of Steel sequel. “He’s doing Man of Steel 2. I don’t feel weird about breaking it, so… Yeah. Obviously, Zack Snyder is doing Justice League [Part] 1 and 2. We already got James Wan doing Aquaman… But, yeah, I think George Miller is the perfect choice to do Man of Steel 2. He’s going to bring so much to it.”

As fans know, George Miller was attached to the defunct 2008 Justice League movie that was to feature Armie Hammer as Batman, DJ Cotrona as Superman, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman, Adam Brody as The Flash, Teresa Palmer as Talia al Ghul, Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord, Hugh Keays-Byrne as Martian Manhunter and Megan Gale as Wonder Woman.

While Man of Steel 2 isn’t offically a part of the WB slate of announced DC movies, it was reported that standalone Batman and Superman movies would be forthcoming.

Op-Ed: Ben Affleck As Batman Is The End Of DC

This is the END, DC!

Attempting to comprehend “Why?!?”

By: Lawrence Napoli

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:10411:]]

It’s Thursday night, August 22, 2013, and I just found out that Ben Affleck will be the next Batman in the sequel to Man of Steel as well as what I presume will be DC’s efforts moving forward to culminate in Justice League. Let that sentence percolate for a moment. Ben F*CKING Affleck!?!? Here’s a pro tip: count to ten, take a breath, in the nose, out the mouth. Needless to say, but I am extremely disappointed in this decision. Nothing (and I mean NOTHING) in this actor’s repertoire indicates that he would, could or should be Batman in a serious adaptation of that character’s license on the silver screen. I’ll delve into my opinion about this debacle later, but first I need to make some predictions about what this means for DC shamelessly attempting to recapture The Avengers in a bottle.

1) Established media entities will universally praise this move.
Affleck, love him or hate him, happens to be an A-list, popular name whose attachment to any film production can send budgets through the roof and potential ticket sales of seemingly obscure films in the same direction. He’s a regular on GQ, he’s a tabloid darling, and thanks to Argo he not only has “street cred,” but finally something significant to distinguish himself from Matt Damon’s more esteemed body of work. DC, Dune Entertainment, Syncopy and Warner Bros. are making this decision entirely about money, but the false assumption is that Affleck has this effect for this kind of serious comic book adaptation. In the one, previous stint Affleck had with starring as a superhero: Daredevil, that production had a budget of $78 million dollars in 2003 and its GLOBAL take at the box office was just under $180 million. This is NOT an example of “showing me the money!”

2) Bat Fans, Bloggers, Fan Websites and anything else remotely grassroots will universally pan (or at least raise a serious eyebrow at) this move.
The die-hard fan (a.k.a. fanboy) is instrumental in turning these comic book movies into legit challengers to Avatar’s all time money record. They’re the ones that pump movies they like incessantly (and for free) on the internet, attend multiple screenings and contribute to a fever pitched word of mouth campaign to do the kind of things The Avengers did. Core fans don’t care very much for Affleck because everything about his persona reeks of Shannon who worked at The Fashionable Male in Mallrats. He’s comes off as arrogant, narcissistic, over privileged and completely devoid of an ounce of genuine humility. You know, he’s the kind of guy that beat up the comic book geeks and nerds in high school. Yeah, this decision should go over really well with them.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:10413:]]

3) Superman vs. Batman and Justice League by extension will be out-earned, outperformed and out-classed by the Marvel Films.
DC is already at a distinct disadvantage with making Superman the center piece of their movement because that character’s godlike immunity makes him difficult to connect with contemporary audiences. Green Lantern was so awful that DC would rather have everyone completely forget that it ever happened. Nobody gives a damn about Aquaman. No woman (save for Lucy Lawless in her prime) could do Wonder Woman justice. And no one (outside of “the core”) knows about Flash, Martian Manhunter or Cyborg. DC’s most valuable character is the one they’ve already made seven movies with, and Christian Bale’s performance is recognized by many to be the “best Bat” to date. Oh, and Bale happens to be an Academy Award winning actor.

4) Zack Snyder is going to be constantly hitting every media outlet to pump up Affleck as Batman and tell nay-sayers to shut up.
“(Affleck) has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”
– Zack Snyder.

Expect to see unending remixes of this last statement for the next two years. By the way, if you were looking for a translation for that quote, it goes something like this: “Forget your apprehensions concerning this casting call; Ben Affleck is the perfect Batman because the studio told me so, and I couldn’t identify a real actor even if Hugh Jackman punched me in the face.” Okay, so that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but seriously, what was Snyder thinking with that? “Scars of a seasoned crime fighter,” implies the aforementioned humility factor that a career spent personifying arrogant bastards is pretty much incapable of depicting.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:10414:]]

5) Everyone will suddenly pine for Superman snapping Batman’s neck in the movie.
This has a lot to do with prediction #2. Frank Miller’s, The Dark Knight Returns has that infamous showdown between Batman and Superman that has had every comic book aficionado salivating over Batman’s ability to overcome any odds and defeat any adversary put before him. People like Batman because he’s dark, deductive, mortal and flawed, and Superman was depicted as a brain-washed boy scout in that comic. Affleck is not an underdog though; he’s a front-runner and people want to see him get taken down a peg or two. Ergo, Henry Cavill needs to melt his face off with heat vision. Perhaps this is all an elaborate scheme by DC to make Superman their #1 guy in the eyes of the fans: by neutering Batman with Affleck.

I’m sure other things will happen like fans picketing theatres, or petitions to bring back Christian Bale. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if people hit up Kickstarter to put real money behind the serious opposition to this decision, but the fact of the matter is that this casting decision is the furthest from a slam dunk and it astounds me that no one calling the shots for DC’s film adaptations gave this a serious thought. Not once did I ever consider Affleck to be a legitimate contender for this role because he’s simply way too high-profile for it. What motivates an actor who’s already made millions and could give two shits if people don’t like his performance? I simply do not know, but actors who have neither of those are more likely to deliver a better performance and that’s what it should really be about.

The one thing I’d really like to know is what Affleck’s boy, Kevin Smith has to say about this. I’m sure he’s polishing his knee pads for the man now that the decision’s been made, and it’s out there for everyone to discuss, but I’d want to know what he’d say behind closed doors before any rumors concerning his casting were ever conceived.

I know I should be a more mature, reasonable and responsible journalist in regards to expressing my opinion on this matter, but I simply never cared for Ben Affleck, any of his films, his association with J-Lo, and his (generally speaking) smarmy attitude. I care even less for him now that he’s been tapped to be my favorite vigilante. I realize I should reserve all judgment until the film comes out, but that would be difficult seeing how I am giving serious thought to boycotting DC’s films from this point on.

Make mine Marvel!
