Watch: Nicolas Cage Superman Lives Test Footage

Check out a clip above from The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? documentary featuring Nicolas Cage testing out the costume.

Cage was Tim Burton’s choice for the new Man Of Steel from the defunct Superman Lives ’90s movie.

The Death of ‘Superman Lives’: What Happened? will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and video on demand on July 9 and at booth #3915 at Comic-Con.

Info:

The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? is a Feature Length Documentary about the unmade movie “Superman Lives”. This film, out of all the various attempts to make a Superman movie between 1987 and 2006, would have stood the test of time and become a bonafide Cult Classic nowadays. I am not alone with my intense interest in knowing everything I can about this project, and so now I’m embarking on making a Documentary that will cover everything ever made for this film, from interviewing as many people as I can who were involved, to including actually recreating scenes from the script!!!

Ava DuVernay Not Directing Black Panther Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21208:]]

Ava DuVernay will not be directing the Black Panther movie for Marvel Studios.

Following confirmation that the DuVernay was in talks with Marvel, the Selma director has now come out and stated it isn’t happening because they couldn’t come to an agreement.

“I’m not signing on to direct Black Panther. I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be,” DuVernay told Essence. “Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me.”

The Black Panther movie is due out July 6, 2018 starring Chadwick Bosemann who will first appear in Captain America: Civil War next May,

“I loved meeting Chadwick and writers and all the Marvel execs,” said DuVernay. “In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later… I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be first in line to see it.”

Ava DuVernay isn’t the first director to mention creative differences with Marvel as Alan Taylor also recently stated working with Marvel was “wrenching,” and of course, Edgar Wright departing Ant-Man is well known example in addition to Patty Jenkins not directing Thor 2

Zack Snyder & Ben Affleck Defend Superman Killing & Man Of Steel Destruction

With Batman Vs. Superman coming to Comic-Con and the new images released, Zack Snyder’s take on Man of Steel is again being looked at as the end to the film was controversial for a lot of fans which saw Superman kill Zod.

Now as part of EW‘s Comic-Con coverage, both Snyder and Ben Affleck make their case why all the destruction in Metropolis makes sense.

Zack Snyder:

“I was surprised because that’s the thesis of Superman for me, that you can’t just have superheroes knock around and have there be no consequences,” says Snyder. The director says he had always intended for the dead to be counted. Indeed, Batman v Superman addresses these concerns head-on—Superman’s victims serve as Batman’s impetus to take him down.

“There are other superhero movies where they joke about how basically no one’s getting hurt,” Snyder says. “That’s not us. What is that message? That’s it’s okay that there’s this massive destruction with zero consequence for anyone? That’s what Watchmen was about in a lot of ways too. There was a scene, that scene where Dan and Laurie get mugged. They beat up the criminals. I was like the first guy, I want to show his arm get broken. I want a compound fracture. I don’t want it to be clean. I want you to go, ‘Oh my God, I guess you’re right. If you just beat up a guy in an alley he’s not going to just be lying on the ground. It’s going to be messy.”

Ben Affleck:

“One of the things I liked was Zack’s idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings,” says Ben Affleck, who plays Batman. “And in fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne’s building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event.”

New Deadpool Image

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21206:]]

Check out a new image of Deadpool via Entertainment Weekly and comments from Simn Kinberg and director Tim Miller.

“Deadpool is a hard R,” assures producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past). “It’s graphic. Nothing is taboo. You either commit to a truly outrageous boundary-pushing kind of movie or you don’t.”

First-time director Tim Miller, who designed the arresting open credits sequence for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, cites a different David Fincher movie as a touchstone: “I felt Fight Club and Tyler Durden were good corollaries,” he says. “We are in strip clubs and dive bars and crappy apartments and far away from the shiny X-Men world.”

“Deadpool” has a February 12, 2016 release directed by Tim Miller starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano and Ed Skrein.

Synopsis:

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Michael Keaton & JK Simmons Exit King Kong Skull Island

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21193:]]

It’s learned that both Michael Keaton and JK Simmons have exited Legendary’s King Kong Skull Island movie.

Deadline cites scheduling issues as the reason.

Michael Keaton was recently named on a new comic book movie with Imagine Agents, in which he will both star and produce.

J.K. Simmons, current starring in Terminator: Genisys, is a fan hopeful to return to the Spider-Man franchise as J. Jonah Jameson, and interestingly enough, this follows the news of Marvel announcing Tom Holland as Spider-Man. Obviously, the two may not be connected, but at least there is some hope there.

Tom Hiddleston is still on board Skull Island.

Kong: Skull: Island has a March 10, 2017 directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts with a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein.

Synopsis:

In the spirit of its worldwide blockbuster Godzilla, Legendary Pictures presents a bold new take on the mythos of another iconic beast with Kong: Skull Island, which stars Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers and Thor series).

Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) and written by John Gatins(Flight) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla), Kong: Skull Island will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline.

Thomas Tull (Godzilla, The Dark Knight, Pacific Rim) and Jon Jashni (Godzilla, Warcraft) will produce and Alex Garcia (Godzilla) will executive produce. The film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D by Universal Pictures.

Spider-Man To Start Filming June 2016

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21191:]]

While doing press for Ant-Man, Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige offered updates on the filming schedules for Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Thor 3 and the new Spider-Man.

Regarding Captain America: Civil War, Feige said they just crossed the halfway mark of filming last week, and that it’s around day 42 or 43 of 80.

Feige offered Doctor Strange will start to film in London this November.

James Gunn recently confirmed the title for the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel to be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which Feige stated will start filming in London around February and/or March of 2016.

The third Thor movie, Thor: Ragnarok, will film at the same time as the new Tom Holland Spider-Man movie, around June of 2016.

Feige also shot down the rumor that Thor 3 will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and stated the announcement for the director should be some time soon.

While there was a previous goofy rumor that Marvel was “scared” of WB at this Summer’s Comic-Con, as many have anticipated, Feige said it’s possible Marvel will be at Disney’s D23 Expo in August.

“Captain America: Civil War” hits May 6, 2016; “Doctor Strange” has a November 4, 2016 release; “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” blasts off May 5, 2017; Spider-Man swings in July 28, 2017, and “Thor: Ragnarok” hammers home November 3, 2017.

Guillermo del Toro No Longer Attached To Justice League Dark

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21190:]]

It’s learned Guillermo del Toro is no longer attached to Justice League Dark.

Yesterday saw Warner Bros. shuffle their DC Vertigo titles around which saw Sandman moved from WB to sister arm, New Line Cinema.

In THR‘s report on the news, they state insiders say Guillermo del Toro is working on Pacific Rim 2 and is prepping for the release of Crimson Peak and is no longer set to direct Justice League Dark.

It is noted Justice League Dark is still at Warner Bros.; the movie is set feature the supernatural characters of the DCU including Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, and Deadman. The reason given (which may be why Guillermo del Toro is no longer attached) is that DC Comics recently moved the JLD characters into their regular DC Universe and the movie is doing the same.

Sandman is based on the Neil Gaiman comic and is being developed by Jospeh Gordon Levitt.

Dwayne Johnson’s Shazam is still at New Line as well.

Deadline reports the reason for the Vertigo titles shifting to New Line under Toby Emmerich and Richard Brener is that the Vertigo titles are considered “subversive” compared to the WB-steered DC Comics titles with those “venerable superheroes.”

Alan Taylor Contradicts Kevin Feige Regarding Marvel Directorial Control

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21181:]]

It’s long been said that Marvel Studios controls and has more say so over their movies than the directors working on the films.

There has been reported issues with Jon Favreau and the Iron Man movies, which also includes Mickey Rourke butting heads with Marvel over his character, Whiplash, in Iron Man 2.

We can also most recently point to The Avengers: Age Of Ultron as Joss Whedon let it be known lots of scenes were cut from the movie at the request of Marvel, with most notably being Tom Hiddleston’s scene. Marvel even said Hiddleston wasn’t available for Avengers 2, but when Whedon spoke with Hiddleston, Hiddleston stated he was all up for it.

We can also throw in the Edgar Wright Ant-Man situation as Marvel brought a new director on board with Peyton Reed reportedly because Wright’s version wasn’t as “connected” to the Marvel Universe and didn’t feature “Avengers.”

Now the latest is regarding comments made by Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige in regards to WB’s Greg Silverman stating that Warner Bros. allows directors to fullfill their visions, while meaning Marvel does not, and comments made by Thor 2 director Alan Taylor.

Here’s the Q&A with Feige via THR:

Warner Bros.’ Greg Silverman told THR that the difference between the DC/Warners movies and Marvel movies is that Warners allows directors to fulfill their visions. How do you respond?

FEIGE My response is: Look at the movies. Iron Man and Iron Man 2 are as Jon Favreau films as you can see. Kenneth Branagh has his stamp all over ThorCaptain America: First Avenger is very much a Joe Johnston film. The greatest example of that, look at Guardians of the Galaxy withJames Gunn. And the one I always point out is Avengers. We knew the general structure when we sat down with Joss [Whedon]. But I don’t want you to think we gave him a story. We gave him a “Here’s where we think the movie should start, here’s where we think this character should come into it; it would be fun if something like this happened in the middle and in the end a hole opens up and aliens pour out into Manhattan.” So arguably, there were many pieces in place, and yet now that everyone has seen the movie, it’s completely a Joss Whedon film. He was able to take all the elements that were handed to him – that were studio-imposed, if you want to look at it that way – and make it his own. We wouldn’t have hired any of the filmmakers we’ve hired if we just wanted somebody who would do what we say.

Alan Taylor, while doing press for his latest movie Terminator: Genisys, contradicts Feige’s statements about working on Thor 2. While Taylor does say Marvel did give him freedom to direct the movie; however, when all the footage was completed, Taylor says Marvel wouldn’t let him go with his version of Thor 2.

Via UpRoxx:

When I spoke to you for Thor: The Dark World, I got the underlying tone that it wasn’t the greatest experience for you making that movie.

[Terminator: Genisys and Thor: The Dark World] were very different. I’ve done two and I’ve learned that you don’t make a $170 million movie with someone else’s money and not have to collaborate a lot. The Marvel experience was particularly wrenching because I was sort of given absolute freedom while we were shooting, and then in post it turned into a different movie. So, that is something I hope never to repeat and don’t wish upon anybody else. This was not like that. The story we started telling is essentially the story we finished and are bringing out into the world. But there was a lot of collaboration, as there is going to be on something this big.

With Thor: The Dark World, I did get the impression you were promoting a movie that you didn’t think was the movie you made.

[Laughs] I’m hoping I wasn’t that candid?

I was reading in-between the lines.

Okay, well, you’re probably good at reading body language over the phone. I’m not good at hiding stuff like that.

You seem happier this time.

The finished movie has a lot more in common with what we started with, so that’s great. The experience of making it with this cast, shooting in New Orleans, was quite fun, despite the grueling schedule. But, yeah, if we were to have drinks somewhere, I have plenty to complain about. We’ll do that next time.

Back while promoting Thor 2, Taylor also told HP the following about problems with Marvel, which sounds like Thor 2 was meant to have more action from the start.

Though, there’s a lot of exposition at the beginning. But after about 45 minutes, it really comes together.

Yeah, I think that is sort of the structure that was found in post. The early versions of the movie that I have tremendous affection for, there was a lot less exposition up front. And it was sort of… kind of discovered it along the way — and the decision was made. It’s a common dynamic, I think, to sort of front-load everything you need to know so that, precisely, the audience can sort of relax and have fun for the latter part. That was sort of the tug-of-war during post.

James Gunn Approves Of Ant-Man

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21180:]]

Not only has James Gunn confirmed the title to Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but Gunn also approves of Marvel’s latest movie, Ant-Man.

Gunn posted the following about Ant-Man on Facebook.

Ant-Man may just be my favorite Marvel film since Jon Favreau’s Iron Man(well, maybe excluding one film to which I’m partial). Honestly, the movie is a complete blast! I was so happy after seeing it. It’s never boring for a second and it’s hilarious and warm throughout. It doesn’t get caught up in the webbing of its own science-fiction concept like so many movies do these days, remaining simple and elegant. It’s a part of the Marvel universe without being ruled by that fact. Paul Rudd is nuanced and charming and funny and is a surprisingly natural fit as a modern superhero (side-fact – Paul must be a nice guy, because he and I dated the same girl in college, and yet I still love him). Michael Peña KILLS IT – this movie is going to make him a huge star. My old pal Judy Greer (she was Deadly Girl to my Minute Man in The Specials (film) many moons ago) is great in a small role. And Michael Douglas is awesome. I think all of Peyton Reed’s years directing have led him to making something as deft and nimble and joyous as this; he did an incredible job. And, despite Edgar Wright’s parting from Marvel, his spirit is felt through the entire project, and there is no doubt everyone owes him a huge debt of gratitude. I left the theater incredibly happy. So often I see movies by people I love which are just okay – it’s great to love a movie as much as I love the people who made it.

This is a photo of me and David Dastmalchian at the premiere after-party last night – David plays a Russian hacker in the movie and nearly every single line out of his mouth gets a laugh. He’s getting on a plane this morning to fly back to Colombia to resume filming his other movie – my movie, The Belko Experiment.

Congrats to the the whole Ant-Man team. Amazing work, guys! And, for the 99.99% of the people reading this who aren’t part of the Ant-Man team, go check it out when it hits theaters (in a lot of places) July 17.

Have a great Tuesday.

Ant-Man may just be my favorite Marvel film since Jon Favreau’s Iron Man (well, maybe excluding one film to which I’m…
