Tilda Swinton Confirms Doctor Strange

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21383:]]

Tilda Swinton has confirmed she will be playing the role of the Ancient One in Marvel’s Doctor Strange movie.

“No no no, it’s done,” Swinton told Screen Crush. “We’re so far in talks that we’re not talking any more [laughs]. It’s done. The conversation has been had.”

Swinton continues with mention about what appealed to her regarding Doctor Strange.

“I just really liked the premise of this and the idea of playing this character,” she said. “I’m a Marvel fan and I think this particular world that Doctor Strange goes into is really, really, really exciting. I’m really interested as both an actor and a fan to see what’s done in this particular world… The idea of playing The Ancient One is really just too tickling. I can’t say no to that!”

Swinton also confirms she’s signed on for a multi-picture deal with Marvel.

“Not at all. It’s like a family thing. Who knows where one might pop up. I don’t know where they’ll use me and I don’t know that they know, necessarily, even though they seem to know what they’re doing for the next decade. I think it’s like holding on to the tail of a galloping horse at this point.”

Doctor Strange has a November 4, 2016 release directed by Scott Derrickson starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange.

Disney’s Bob Iger Not Worried About Competition Because “We’re Marvel”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21283:]]

Disney’s Bob Iger is pretty confident in the Marvel brand.

The CEO recently told journalists that he isn’t too worried about competition from other comic book movies noting: “We’re Marvel.”

“We’re Marvel,” Iger stated at a media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, reports Variety. “We’ve done a great job of building the Marvel brand, which we think when it’s on a movie really makes a difference. We’re seeing signs of that.”

Iger continued with mention that he’s confidet in Ant-Man and Doctor Strange because of Marvel as well.

“We like the Marvel slate that we have coming up,” Iger added. “We think they’re unique in many ways and have no concerns [about competition] whatsoever.”

The report also mentions Iger wouldn’t go into details about their upcoming Star Wars plans, which is speculated to include a “Star Wars Land,” but did confirm theme park exhibits are in the works.

“We’re going to increase the presence of Star Wars in our parks,” Iger said.

Iger also wouldn’t offer much about Star Wars: The Force Awakens other than confirming the film will have a precense at this week’s Comic-Con.

“Leaving now for London to make Doctor Strange,” Derrickson posted on Twitter.

Marvel Comics Announces Doctor Strange By Aaron & Bachalo

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21107:]]

With a Doctor Strange movie coming up, now it’s the Sorceror Supreme’s turn for a “reinvention.”

Marvel Comics has announced a new post-Secret Wars Doctor Strange series from writer Jason Aaron and artist Chris Bachalo.

EW.com notes the new Doctor Strange series will “not only serve as a reinvention of the classic character but will also explore him in a deeper way than ever before.”

“This is a Doctor Strange who is going to get hurt real bad, real quick. And who is also going to make you feel things,” Marvel editor Nick Lowe explained. “And not just think things, but feel things… hopefully a little bit of both.”

Per the cover below, Doctor Strange is seen using an axe. Regarding Strange’s use of weapons, Jason Aaron offered: “So we’re not turning him into Captain America or Thor where he has one weapon he carries around at all times. But certainly, we don’t want him to just be the guy who stands there and shoots blasts of magic energy out of his hands. We want him to be able to dive into different kinds of fights. So we’ll see him use his power and use a lot of different weapons in very different ways. “

Regarding the tone of the book, Aaron offered the following details: “He’s a Sorcerer Supreme; he kind of walks the path not many other characters in the Marvel Universe walk. And certainly out of all of those people who deal with magic, he’s the guy sitting at the top of the pyramid. So I like that part of it. I like that he has a different beat than most of the other heroes, and he loves that. He loves the weirdness of it. He’s a weird guy. We talk about the fact that his house is maybe the last truly weird place left in New York City and the Marvel Universe. When you go inside, you never know what you’re going to find when you open any door. You certainly want to stay out of the refrigerator [laughs.] I like that it’s kind of a celebration of the strange and the weird, and he loves that. But at the same time, what he’s doing take a toll on him. And you can’t walk this path, you can’t be the Sorcerer Supreme without paying that price. Whether that’s a physical price or a mental one—you know, some day this job is going to kill you, or drive you insane, or worse. I like that balance of he’s having fun, but also this job is taking a toll on him.”

The new Doctor Strange series hits this Fall.

Chiwetel Ejiofor Cast As Baron Mordo In Doctor Strange

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20952:]]

Chiwetel Ejiofor has been cast as Baron Mordo for Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange movie.

Deadline confirms the news with mention Baron Mordo in the movie may not actually be a straight-up villain as it’s reported Baron Mordo will be an amalgamation of characters culled from Doctor Strange’s mythology.

The report also confirms the Ancient One will be female, as most recently it was reported Tilda Swinton is in talks for the role.

In the comics, Baron Mordo is a student of the Ancient One who plots to kill his mentor, but Stephen Strange learns of the plot and then in turn becomes the Ancient One’s student.

Chiwetel Ejiofor is known for 12 Years A Slave.

Doctor Strange has a November 4, 2016 release starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character with a script by Jon Spaihts.

No Marvel Studios Stated Again For Comic-Con; Batman Vs Superman May Be Big

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20905:]]

Confirming what James Gunn said back in March, now Deadline is stating that Marvel Studios will not have a presentation in Hall H at Comic-Con.

The report mentions that “Kevin Feige just doesn’t have anything new to show,” which is a rather odd statement as Marvel has Ant-Man opening the following week in addition to Marvel filming Captain America: Civil War and plans for Doctor Strange to be released in 2016, with filming to begin later this year.

There is also the fact that Marvel could have revealed their new Spider-Man at Comic-Con.

More than likely, Disney is holding back Marvel Studios from Comic-Con for either their own event, similar to the Avengers: Infinity War announcement with Black Panther at El Capitan theater from last year, or the Disney D23 Expo a month after Comic-Con in August.

It is noted that Marvel Studios’ absence will leave Warner Bros. with, potentially, a significant presence of its own as Batman Vs. Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League Part 1 are lined up. It’s possible Will Smith, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and others may be at Comic-Con representing the DC movies.

For Marvel fans, while Marvel Studios will not be at the SDCC, Marvel Comics will be there with a booth and panels of their own.

Comic-Con takes place July 9-12 in San Diego.

Doctor Strange Comic-Con Action Figure Set Revealed

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20876:]]

With Marvel Studios launching a Doctor Strange movie next year comes word of a Hasbro exclusive Comic-Con Doctor Strange Marvel Legends action figure set, which is actually based on the comics.

The set will be available at this Summer’s Comic-Con for $99.99 and available through the online Hasbro Shop for a limited time.

The set includes 6-inch figures for Doctor Strange in his blue astral form, Brother Voodoo, the mutant sorceress Magik, the Asgardian goddess of death Hela, Strange’s arch nemesis – and ruler of the Dark Dimension – the dreaded Dormammu, and a wearable Eye of Agamotto (via USA Today).

Last year’s Comic-Con saw Marvel Cosmic figures sold for Thanos Imperative and The Infinity Gauntlet, which now cost a pretty penny, so if you attend Comic-Con this year, the Doctor Strange set might be worth picking up if just for resale value alone.

Comic-Con runs July 8-12th.

Scott Derrickson Teases Mistress Death & Origin For Doctor Strange

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20755:]]

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson has posted a rather interesting tweet, which teases Death (or Mistress Death) from the Marvel Comics.

Derrickson tweeted out an image of the cover from Doctor Strange #2, which features Death.

In what could be a possible spoiler for the movie, we’ll just say the issue sees Doctor Strange confront Death in what is part of his origin story.

Interestingly enough, Thanos just happens to worship Death as well.

We see the cover reads “Dr. Strange Meets… Death!” with Derrickson adding: “As will we all..”

Death, in Marvel Comics lore, is one of the cosmic abstracts and the personification of Death who came into existence at the creation of the universe along with the other cosmic abstracts: Eternity, Infinity and Oblivion. All four more or less balance each other out.

Doctor Strange has a November 4, 2016 release starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange.

Kevin Feige Extends Marvel Contract; Talks MCU

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20434:]]

Good news for fans of the Marvel cinematic universe as it’s learned Kevin Feige has extended his Marvel contract.

Feige recently attended a Q&A at his alma mater, the University of Southern California, where students watched a prescreening of Avengers 2.

Feige offered his Marvel contract has recently been renewed, but wouldn’t say anything more on the subject. Update: It’s now being said Kevin Feige didn’t say his contract has been renewed, but that some of the actors had their contracts renewed.

Feige is the president and producer of Marvel Studios overseeing the billion dollar plus franchise for Disney as well as is involved with Marvel properties at other studios including Sony’s Spider-Man.

The most recent Marvel movie to have debuted, The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, is already at $700 million worldwide. Up next for Feige is Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Inhumans, The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2 and the new Sony standalone Spider-Man.

At the Q&A, Feige also let it be known that at any given moment Marvel is thinking 10 to 20 years ahead for their films, but is actively working on the next 5 years, and that what matters most is the movie coming out next. Feige said the current long term focus is the Phase 3 movies.

Feige also said that the characters from the Marvel TV series might make future appearances in future films – or they might not – but that they won’t rule anything out.

Another detail mentioned by Kevin Feige was that a scene meant for The Avengers 2 will show up in Captain America: Civil War, which was a joint decision by both Feige and director Joss Whedon. Feige said the scene was one of his favorites.

Regarding the future use of the same actors, Feige let it be known the characters will continue, but whether or not they will continue with the current actors is unknown as absolutely nothing is set in stone.

Feige answered a question regarding the MCU becoming “darker” (I’m guessing compared to the DC movies) with Feige responding the Marvel movies won’t be going that route, but will always have the tone and humor they have now. Feige said he “hoped people would catch on by now” that there will be “no giant dark turns in the MCU – the humor is the DNA of the movies and there are no plans to change that.”

One last tidbit includes mention Quicksilver will stay dead. Feige said Quicksilver won’t be resurrected (i.e. Coulson Lives). Feige said Quicksilver is dead and wanted to make sure people understood that.

Thanks to redditor JonLuca for posting his class notes.

Kevin Feige Talks Spider-Man, Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange, Captain America 3 & More

Kevin Feige continues to make the press rounds for Avengers 2, with this time the president of Marvel Studios asked about a potentially non-white Spider-Man.

In the above video, Feige is asked about Miles Morales with Feige responding:

We’ve always thought it should be Peter. We’ve never seen the MCU version of Peter Parker. It felt like we needed to see that first. Miles, I think is awesome. There are opportunities for him, for sure, if this all works and continues.

The potenital for a non-white Spider-Man is then brought up, with Feige responding:

Maybe. The field is very wide right now in terms of who we are looking at within a certain age range.

Feige also answered questions on Captain Marvel and offered they didn’t want to introduce her flying around without anyone knowing her character, and Feige offered in an earlier version of an Avengers 2 script, Carol Danvers was a part of it.

Regarding Doctor Strange, Feige offers the supernatural side of the MCU is something they have been talking about for a long time. Feige says director Scott Derrickson and the producing team are scouting locations in NYC with filming to take place in London this November. Feige also offers Benedict Cumberbatch is so excited, and they haven’t discussed Strange’s accent yet (Cumberbatch is British).

Feige is also asked if there is a possibilty to add in other Marvel movies in Phase 3, like a Hulk movie or Iron Man 4. Feige said they already added in Spider-Man, but said he would be more worried about having to change the schedule again than adding in more movies.

On Thor 3, Feige offers they are currently writing the script and looking for a director(s) and again confirms Loki and Tom Hiddleston, and says Loki has an integral role in Thor: Ragnarok.

Regarding the two part Avengers: Infinity War films, Feige says they wouldn’t be one big movie cut in half, but two distinct movies.

Captain America 3 shoots in two weeks, with Feige offering Cap is still the primary focus.

James Gunn Says No San Diego Comic-Con For Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19559:]]Kevin Feige & James Gunn At SDCC 2013

No big Hall H presentation by Marvel Studios this Summer at the San Diego Comic-Con?

If Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn‘s words are to be believed, Marvel Studios will not be attending Comic-Con in July.

A fan asked Gunn about attending the SDCC on Facebook, with Gunn replying, “I’m not sure. Marvel isn’t going so I’m not sure I will either.”

It’s unknown if Gunn’s reply was tongue-in-cheek, but the director is known to be a straight-shooter when it comes to the fans, so Marvel Studios may very well be skipping out on the SDCC.

If it is true, more than likely Marvel will be holding their own press event – possibly at Disney’s D23 Expo a month after Comic-Con on August 14-16 in Anaheim.

Marvel did announce their Avengers Infinity War line-up post-Comic-Con at a solo event; however, that was thought more due to Marvel not signing contracts in time with various actors for their upcoming Phase 3 movies.

It is possible Marvel may want to hold their own press event as it generates more publicity and doesn’t get buried by everything else announced at Comic-Con.

DC and Warner Bros. are thought to be in full force at this year’s SDCC with Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League.   Maybe WB would be better off holding their own press event as well (BvS cast appeared for only a couple minutes at SDCC 2014)?

Marvel may choose to do their own thing – especially seeing they now have Spider-Man – which obviously would be huge.

Bear in mind, Gunn has been wrong or told a little fib in the past: When an early piece of promo art surfaced for Guardians of the Galaxy revealing an Infinity Stone, Gunn claimed it was fan art, but it wasn’t. However, Gunn really has no reason to stretch the truth here.

With Marvel possibly not being at Comic-Con July 9-12, that would mean no promotion for Ant-Man (opens following weekend on July 17th), nothing for Captain America: Civil War (Spider-Man announcement is/was expected), and nothing for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange (November  4, 2016).

Chiwetel Ejiofor Up For Doctor Strange Role

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18841:]]

Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor is said to be up for a leading role in the Doctor Strange movie.

THR reports on the news, but doesn’t have any further details, including which character Chiwetel Ejiofor is up to play.

It’s been said that Chiwetel Ejiofor may be up for a villain role, but reportedly, other sources have said that might not be the case.

Speculation has it that it’s possible Chiwetel Ejiofor is up to play the part of Wong, Doctor Strange’s assistant, or even the Ancient One, Doctor Strange’s mentor.

It’s also guessed the Doctor Strange villain will be Baron Mordo.

Chiwetel Ejiofor is known for 12 Years A Slave, Joss Whedon’s Serenity, and has a role in Ridley Scott’s upcoming The Martian.

It’s noted Marvel is in early talks with Chiwetel Ejiofor, so this isn’t guaranteed.

Doctor Strange has a November 4, 2016 release directed by Scott Derrickson starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.

Ethan Hawke Says Scott Derrickson Is Right Choice For Doctor Strange

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18784:]]

Ethan Hawke was said to be a potential candidate to play Doctor Strange, and while he won’t get the chance to play the Sorcerer Supreme for Marvel, the actor did previously work with director Scott Derrickson on the hit horror movie Sinister.

While participating in a recent Reddit QnA, Ethan Hawke was asked about Doctor Strange and offered the following, stating it’s in good hands with Derrickson.

Doctor Strange sounds particularly interesting to me, not just because of the quality of the comic, but because of the man Marvel hired at the helm. Scott Derricksen directed me in SINISTER, and there’s a lot of lousy horror movies made. But Scott Derricksen really understands the genre. And the math and geometry involved in telling a great ghost story. And I feel certain that he will make an excellent Doctor Strange film if they give him the reins.

But really, I don’t covet any roles as much as I covet relationships with talented people. People often ask me “Do I prefer theater or film, or writing or acting?” And what I really prefer is being in a room with gifted, passionate people. Because it’s contagious. It helps you be in touch with the best part of yourself.

And sometimes, that doesn’t mean really successful, big-shot types. Sometimes it means being in the room with students, and young people whose idealism is undaunted.

I like listening to Laurelai Linklater and Ellar Coltrane talk about movies (my costars in BOYHOOD), and art, cuz they talk straight from their heart, with no secret agenda.

Regarding whether or not Ethan Hawke was going to play Doctor Strange, he recently stated on a podcast that he would be open to playing a similar character:

“If people are going put up with somebody like me, they want to make sure you’re going put asses in seats, and there’s a lot of actors that are going to to put more asses in seats than me. There’s a tremendous amount of salesmanship that’s now really important to a studio like that. It’s a tremendous amount of time in your life where you’re working, and you’re not acting. They’re making movies at a high rate, and they’re making them successfully. I’m totally open to doing something like that.”

Doctor Strange has a November 4, 2016 release starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

With the movie set to open next year, fans can expect Doctor Strange to start filming relatively soon.

While we we, Benedict Cumberbatch spoke about Doctor Strange with the Wall Street Journal noting that this movie will introduce Marvel’s supernatural elemnts for the first time.

I don’t think it’s a risk because of Marvel. Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary comic characters and turning them into screen-like gods. It’s very different, it’s an Astral Plane. There’s a huge new element to this Marvel universe that’s going to be employed in building this story and this character. But you know, I’m really excited about it, about working with Scott [Derrickson] whose imagination is endless, and all the boys and girls at Marvel who know what they’re doing.

Cumberbatch then goes on to comment that while he never read the comic books growing up, he is reading Doctor Strange now.

Growing up, no. I didn’t read many comics at all. Asterix a bit. I think that was it. There weren’t many comics in my household — [in a self-mocking voice] “I’m so deprived.” We didn’t have Marvel so much. But you can bet your bottom dollar I’m reading them now, avidly.
