Batman: The Killing Joke Animated Movie Gets R-rating

The upcoming Batman: The Killing Joke animated movie has received an R-rating.

EW.com reports the R-rating marks the first for WB’s original animated DC movie universe and the second in WB’s DC movie slate (Batman Vs. Superman director’s cut is rated-R).

“From the start of production, we encouraged producer Bruce Timm and our team at Warner Bros. Animation to remain faithful to the original story — regardless of the eventual MPAA rating,” said Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation & Warner Digital Series, in a statement. “The Killing Joke is revered by the fans, particularly for its blunt, often-shocking adult themes and situations. We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience — the comics-loving community — with an animated film that authentically represented the tale they know all too well.”

It’s noted no plays are underway for a PG-13 version of the movie.

Batman: The Killing Joke premiers this Summer at Comic-Con starring Mark Hamill as Joker and Kevin Conroy as Batman, and will be released later this year on Blu-Ray and digital.

Micheal Keaton In Talks To Play Spider-Man: Homecoming Villain

Do we have our Vulture for Spider-Man: Homecoming?

It’s being reported that Michael Keaton is in talks to play the villain in the 2017 Spider-Man reboot starring Tom Holland.

Variety reported the news, but the specific character Michael Keaton is in talks for is presently unknown.

A previous rumor mentioned Vulture might be a villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Vulture would be a rather interesting choice for Keaton as he recently played another feathered character with Birdman. Of course, Michael Keaton is also known for playing Batman in the 1989 Tim Burton DC movie.

Spider-Man: Homecoming has a July 7, 2017 release directed by Jon Watts starring Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Zendaya as Michelle.

Ben Affleck To Direct & Star In Batman Movie Confirmed

It’s confirmed Ben Affleck will both direct and star in a new standalone Batman movie.

Affleck also wrote the script with DC Entertainment chief creative officer and comic book writer Geoff Johns.

Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara confirmed the news Tuesday at CinemaCon, stating WB is movie forward with the Affleck Batman movie.

Kevin Tsujihara also had good things to say about the record opening of Batman Vs. Superman, which leads into Justice League.

“It set up a great foundation for our DC slate, which includes at least 10 movies through 2020,” Tsujihara told a packed room, reports THR. “I’m also excited to know that we will be working with Ben Affleck on a stand-alone Batman movie.”

Previously it was reported that Ben Affleck was only contracted to do two more movies following Batman Vs. Superman with Justice League parts 1 and 2, but obviously now we see Affleck and WB have extended the Batman deal. Ben Affleck is also appearing in August’s Suicide Squad movie.

The new Batman movie has yet to have a release date, but WB did just announce release dates for two DC movies – Oct. 5, 2018, and Nov. 1, 2019 – with one more than likely for Affleck’s Caped Crusader film.

Warner Bros. also showed off a DC Cinematic reel at CinemaCon which was introduced by Amy Adams (Lois Lane).

“You get your first real taste of this expanding universe,” Warners film chief Greg Silverman said in the clip.

Earlier rumors surrounding the solo Batman movie have mentioned the Red Hood.

Here is the current release dates for the DC movies:

August 05, 2016 – Suicide Squad

June 02, 2017 – Wonder Woman
November 17, 2017  – Justice League Part One

March 23, 2018 – The Flash

Will Smith Wants To Play Batman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23215:]]

Will Smith made an appearance over the weekend at the MTV Movie Awards where the new Suicide Squad trailer debuted (watch below).

MTV caught up with Will Smith to ask what’s next for Deadshot, with Smith offering he wants to play Batman.

“There was one of the comics when Bruce Wayne got injured and Deadshot, for a couple [issues], came in,” Smith said. “He had to throw on the Batsuit. I’m just saying, if they were going to draw from that, I wouldn’t reject it. I’m a team player. I’m a team player. If they need me in the suit, I’m in it. [Ben Affleck] can do it for two or three, then Deadshot can take over. To me, it’s the logical progression.”

Will Smith has actually been rumored for the new standalone Batman movie.

Ben Affleck Batman Is Different Than Christian Bale Dark Knight

This is pretty much a given, but I suppose if anyone out there actually thought the new Justice League movie universe was a continuation of the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Batman universe, producer Charles Roven clears things up.

Coming Soon suggested to Roven that it could be looked at that the older Ben Affleck Batman in Batman Vs. Superman is actually the same Batman as Christian Bale, but set further into the future.

Charles Roven shot down that theory noting super humans don’t exist within the world of Nolan’s Batman, but do within the new Justice League universe:

Do you think so? We really wanted to make a clear demarcation line. Chris [Nolan], Emma [Thomas] and I would talk about how, in his “Dark Knight” trilogy universe, there are no superheroes. Batman is not a superhero. He doesn’t have super powers. Chris would always say, “His super power is that he’s a billionaire. He’s got all this money.” I viewed it that Bruce Wayne was a man who took his human abilities, whether they were physical or mental, and pushed them to the absolute peak of the human condition. But he still wasn’t a superhero. Then the villains, whether it was Ra’s al Ghul or the Joker or Bane, they were also all human. They might be aberrant, messed up and diabolical, but they were human beings. When we started doing “Man of Steel,” Chris and Emma were producers on that one as well. They knew that they were opening up a whole different universe. Even though the fans sometimes talked about, “Maybe Joe [Gordon-Levitt] is going to be the Batman in ‘Batman versus Superman,’” we knew that was never going to be the case because it is a different universe. In the universe we created with “Man of Steel,” there are superheroes. There are aliens. There are metahumans. The character of Batman isn’t Christian Bale ten years later. He’s different. He’s come up a different way. His parents, even though they died outside a movie theater, didn’t die outside an Opera theater. We thought about those things. I was involved with both movies and “Dark Knight Rises” was three or four years from the time I started working on “Batman v Superman.” It made me feel better that I could go, “That was that and this is this.” It’s just going to a different place with the material and expanding it out.

Regarding Ben Affleck, he’s writing a new Batman standalone movie script with Geoff Johns, and Affleck is due to start filming Justice League this week.

Kevin Smith Confirms Geoff Johns Writing Batman Script With Ben Affleck

On his latest podcast, Kevin Smith confirms that Geoff Johns is writing the new Batman solo movie script along with Ben Affleck.

Affleck previously mentioned he was working on a project with Johns, and it was also recently confirmed Affleck wrote a Batman script.

Here’s what Kevin Smith had to say about Geoff Johns working on Batman:

[Ben Affleck’s] been working on a [Batman] solo script with Geoff Johns as well. Last conversation I had with Geoff Johns, I was like, “Are you working on it?” And he said, “Yeah.” I said, “What’s it like, man? How do you co-write with someone?” And he’s going, “We just break it up. He takes halves, and I take halves and then we write, and then we switch material, and then he goes over mine, and I go over his.” That sounds so f—ing fun man.

Smith also previously let it be known the Batman script will be better than the Batman Vs. Superman script.

It’s been said Ben Affleck hasn’t signed on yet for the Batman movie, but WB just announced release dates for two new DC movies, with one of them more than likely for the new Batman film.

So it seems we’re just waiting on the official announcement from WB about Batman. Maybe at this Summer’s Comic-Con?

Zack Snyder Rumored To Lose Justice League Control; Adjustments Made Following Batman Vs. Superman

With Batman vs. Superman getting such mixed reviews, and it now looking likely the movie won’t reach that magic billion dollar mark, the rumors are starting to fly.

The first rumor actually came out prior to the release of Batman Vs. Superman, which stated execs at WB were worried about the film and future of the Justice League universe. Looking back at it now, the rumor may hold merit, and now it’s also suggested Zack Snyder may no longer be in charge of Justice League (see below).

The second rumor – which turned out to be true – is that WB decided to do Suicide Squad reshoots. Now whether it’s to add in more humor like the rumor stated or more action like Jai Courtney offered is unclear, but reshoots are happening nonetheless.

The latest batch of rumors courtesy THR:

A new producer could be brought on to WB DC’s universe to take control over from Zack Snyder:  “…maybe add a new producer? — rather than allow BvS director Zack Snyder to proceed with the two-part Justice League.” However, the article notes: “But sources with firsthand knowledge of the situation say the studio has no such plans.”

(my thoughts: What’s up with Geoff Johns? Certainly he has to realize the movies aren’t in line with the comics, especially what they did with Superman in the last two movies. The bad news: Johns was on “Green Lantern.” The obvious problem could be is that Geoff Johns’ opinions hold no weight. Is anybody listening to Johns at WB?)

It’s rumored Batman Vs. Superman may make little profit:  “…competitors say the film may turn a profit but hardly will be the money gusher studios hope for when they pour massive resources into making a giant tentpole with a big star — with a budget in this case said to be in excess of $300 million, and Ben Affleck.”

DC movies are not like Marvel movies: “The biggest problem is that it is not turning [DC] into Marvel,” a rival studios head is quoted as stating. “The audience has communicated, as have the critics.”

Something is wrong with Batman v Superman:  The movie should be hitting a billion because Batman and Superman are two of the most iconic characters, and Jurassic World did hit a billion:  “…you can’t tell me Batman v. Superman is so much less valuable…” an agent argued.

• WB execs are clueless: “Warner Bros. executives were convinced they had the goods with BvS and were shocked when negative reviews began pouring in.”

(my thoughts: herein may lie the problem: The WB execs are obviously clueless about comic book movies and properties. Did they see the same movie as we did? Why not create a DC writer’s/consultant group consisting of Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, etc.? Use assets from DC properties that are already successful — animated and video game universes.)

• WB is said to dismiss the rumors: but will “naturally evaluate what went wrong with BvS.”

Regarding Justice League, WB says: “…we’re not going to take a movie that’s supposed to be one thing and turn it into a copycat of something else.”

“Instability” at WB: is a result of the ouster of Alan Horn (who is seeing huge success at Disney) and Jeff Robinov (who was in charge for the Nolan movies, Harry Potter, etc).

Wonder Woman Release Date Moved up: Two New DC Release Dates Announced

Warner Bros. has announced new release dates for a slate of films including Andy Serkis’ Jungle Book (not to be confused with the upcoming Jon Favreau Disney movie) and the Gal Gadot Wonder Woman movie.

The Jungle Book will be released a year later, from October 6, 2017, to October 19, 2018.

Regarding Wonder Woman, the release date gets moved up from June 23, 2017, to June 2, 2017.

WB also announced release dates for two untitled DC movies with October 5, 2018, and November 1, 2019, which THR notes are for yet-to-be-announced films. More than likely one might be for the solo Ben Affleck Batman movie, as it has recently been learned Affleck wrote the script. The other possibly could be for a Suicide Squad sequel.

It’s also noted a Warner Bros. event film is slated for October 6, 2016.

The current DC movie universe follows as:

August 05, 2016 – Suicide Squad

Zack Snyder Reveals Man Of Steel 2 Ending

Following the initial release of Man of Steel, there was talk of doing another Superman movie, which didn’t include Batman.

Obviously, that didn’t happen, but now a new detail is learned about Man of Steel 2 that references the Dark Knight.

In the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Art of the Film book, Zack Snyder reveals an ending discussed for Man of Steel 2.

“Originally, it was going to be a straight Superman movie,” Snyder explained. “One of the ideas was that at the end of the movie, a crate of kryptonite would be delivered to Wayne Manor. That didn’t happen, but once Batman was mentioned, he wouldn’t go away. It couldn’t be undone.”

Other details we know about the what-could-have-been Man of Steel 2 movie is that it featured an older Lex Luthor. Zack Snyder recently revealed they spoke with Bryan Cranston for the role, and Snyder told Total Film magazine a while back they had to tweak the Batman Vs. Superman script to accommodate using a younger 32-year-old Jesse Eisenberg.

“We talked about the usual suspects that you would imagine; any actor who has been bald, probably,” Snyder previously told Entertainment Weekly. “Bryan Cranston would have been great, right? And by the way, he’s an amazing actor. Can you imagine how different the movie would be?”

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice art book also reveals that Chris Terrio wrote (or rewrote from David Goyer’s script) scenes involving Laurence Fishburne’s Perry White, another Superman character.

“Chris Terrio has done such a great job of continuing what we’ve established with Perry White, but just turning him up a notch,” co-producer Curt Kaneomoto offered. “It’s really, really fun to see how he takes these gentle and not so gentle stabs at Clark in the film.”

The book even mentions the neon LexCorp sign seen in Batman Vs. Superman belonged to Lex’s father, and that Lex featured the sign in the lobby as a trophy over his victory of taking the company from his father, among their troubled relationship.

“Zack wanted Patrick [Tatopoulos] to come up with this gigantic old neon sign that maybe belonged to Lex’s father,” Batman Vs. Superman art director Gregory S. Hooper said. “It was on a rooftop. So, our graphic artist designed an enormous sign. I went down to Cleveland and had that built and installed, and it looked amazing.”

Details are also mentioned that under Lex Sr., LexCorp was more focused on Wall Street or The Big Three automakers. When Lex Jr. came on board, Lex Corp was then modeled on Silicon Valley.

The various details for Man of Steel 2 that we can put together are rather interesting as:

Obviously Man of Steel 2 would have solely focused on Henry Cavill’s Superman/Clark Kent.

• Would not have featured Batman (or any other Justice League characters most likely).

• Would have featured an older Lex Luthor.

• Would have featured Kryptonite.

• The ending would have seen a crate of kryptonite delivered to Wayne Manor, which we can speculate:

• Batman would have obviously taken notice of whatever happened in the movie and had the crate delivered to himself.

Or

• Lex Luthor Sr. delivered the kryptonite crate to Bruce Wayne (which is similar to what happened in Batman Vs. Superman), and this also would have revealed Lex Sr. knew about Bruce being Batman (and possibly other metahumans, again similar to BvS).

There were also rumors following Man of Steel that WB was going to do a solo Batman movie (possibly with a younger Bruce Wayne). It’s possible we could have had Man of Steel 2, a new solo Batman movie, possibly Batman vs. Superman or Batman AND Superman, then Justice League.

Or, for that matter, following Man of Steel 2 and a standalone Batman movie, right to Justice League.

Going the Man of Steel 2 route seems as if the Justice League universe may have been built up more slowly (compared to the Batman Vs. Superman cameos), and that Superman would have been the lead.

Check out a cool fan-trailer for The Flashpoint Paradox featuring footage from the DC TV universe, DC TV and other sources put together by the UltraSargent YouTube channel.

Flashpoint was the DC comic book event that precended their 2011 New 52 relaunch. It was a pretty awesome series that saw The Flash change history and the DCU completely (for better or worse depending how you look at it).

The last scene in the above trailer features a Batman Vs. Superman cameo spoiler.

I’ll also include an explanation below for some of the footage (watch the trailer first if you are unfamiliar with the DC Comics Flashpoint storyline).

Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Comedian Watchmen role is used as the footage for Thomas Wayne. In Flashpoint, a young Bruce Wayne is the one that gets killed, and Thomas Wayne takes up the Batman mantle, which is a gun-toting version of the vigilante. He battles his arch-nemesis The Joker — his wife, Martha Wayne.

Kevin Smith Says Ben Affleck Batman Script Will Be Better Than Batman Vs. Superman

With it recently confirmed Ben Affleck has written a solo Batman movie script, following his positive portrayal in Batman Vs. Superman, now many people are excited about the next adventures of the Dark Knight.

King of the comic fanboys Kevin Smith, who wasn’t all that happy with the characterization in Batman Vs. Superman and noted Batman in the movie was “not the world’s greatest detective,” now says Affleck’s script will be better than Batman Vs. Superman.

“I guarantee you he’s read everything [Batman vs. Superman review-wise] … and he’s like: ‘OK, these are all the pitfalls my script isn’t going to fall into,’ ” Smith told the Freep Film Fest in Detroit

Kevin Smith even spun it (as he’s known to do), that Affleck could even get an Oscar nomination for the Batman movie.

“[Ben Affleck] could get another nomination or even a win for his Batman film,” Smith said, as Affleck won an Oscar for Good Will Hunting (original screenplay) and Argo (best picture).

Ben Affleck also previously let it be known that DC Entertainment chief creative office, Batman Vs. Superman producer and DC Comics writer Geoff Johns had helped out on the Batman movie script.

The Batman solo movie has yet to be announced and Affleck is currently only signed on to do Justice League Part 1 and Part 2, but he is appearing in August’s Suicide Squad.

With the critical reception so poor for Batman Vs. Superman, and depending how the movie does in the long run at the box office, it’s possible WB could fast track a new Batman movie starring Affleck.

Ben Affleck Has Written Batman Movie Script; Contracted For Two Justice League Movies

Following Batman Vs. Superman, it’s learned Ben Affleck is contracted on for at least two more movies with Justice League Part 1 and Part 2.

It’s also learned that Ben Affleck has written his own Batman movie script, though THR notes it’s only an option for Affleck and he is not contracted on a solo Batman movie.

“He’s contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape,” he says, adding, “there’s a script that he’s written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that’s out there as an option,” Patrick Whitesell, co-CEO of the talent agency, William Morris Endeavor (WME), said.

Ben Affleck recent teased he is working on something with DC Entertainment and comics writer Geoff Johns, which also has been speculated to be a new solo Batman movie.

Affleck will also be appearing in August’s Suicide Squad.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is currently in theaters also starring Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot.

Justice League Part 1 is due out November 17, 2017; Part 2 hits in 2019.

Watch: Geoff Johns Talks More About Joker Name Reveal

This past weekend at WonderCon saw DC Comics release details and images for their upcoming Rebirth event.

One of the bigger and most surprising items to come out of the announcement is that DC Comics is going to reveal the Joker’s name.

In a previous issue of Justice League, Batman asked the all-knowing Mobius Chair what is the name of the Joker. The reader wasn’t given the answer, but Batman replied with, “That’s not possible.”

Following the WonderCon announcement, IGN caught up with Geoff Johns who offered a further update about the Joker name reveal.

“We are going to find out what he heard in Darkseid War,” confirmed Johns. “And it’s going to lead to something else.”

When we first reported on the Joker reveal, our post went viral reaching nearly a million people. Many of the fans mentioned they don’t want to know the name of the Joker. Johns comments on that as well.

“But the answer probably won’t be an answer that people predict,” Johns teased with a big smile.

DC Comics “Rebirth” kicks off May 25th with an 80-page special written by Johns priced at $2.99.

Check out the video below of Geoff Johns talking Rebirth and the Joker’s name reveal, as well as Joker teaser art released at WonderCon.

Kevin Smith Wasn’t A Big Fan of Batman Vs. Superman

Kevin Smith, who was actually involved in promoting Batman Vs. Superman, apparently wasn’t a big fan of the movie, particularly in regards to the story and Superman.

Smith, who will be directing an upcoming episode of The Flash, goes on to say on his podcast (via Geek Tyrant) that while the visuals of the film looked good, Superman was off (which we agree with).

“Remember before when we were talking about Flash, and that it has heart, humor, and spectacle. The movie I felt like didn’t really have a heart. It was certainly fucking humorless, there was nothing funny going on in that world whatsoever, but it had lots of spectacle. Like you can’t take that away from Snyder. Boy, he knows how to like compose a frame and how to setup a shot. Beautiful visual stylist but you need more than just the pictures, you need like characterization and these characters seemed off character, particularly Superman.”

Smith is also a big Batman fan and went on to joke about Affleck’s portrayal comparing Bruce Wayne and Batman to Donald Trump. You can listen to the podcast below.

Garman: He just wasn’t that bright.

Smith: Certainly not the world’s greatest detective! More like Bat-Trump.

Garman: He was Bat-Trump. A rich guy with a bad attitude. Who really hated immigrants.

Smith: He hates immigrants in a big bad way!

Garman: I’m gonna build a wall around Krypton, and I’m gonna make them pay for it. I’m going to build a wall around the Hall of Justice, it’s what I do. I build walls and they’re huge.”

Fans will recall back in Justice League #42 when Batman sat on the Mobius Chair that he asked it two questions: Who killed his parents (answer: Joe Chill), and what is the Joker’s real name?

Batman responded, “That’s not possible.”

Well, DC never revealed the answer, but now they will.

At the big Rebirth panel at WonderCon, both Geoff Johns and artist Jason Fabok announced they are revealing what the Mobius Chair said and unleashed the following teaser art:
