Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness tickets went on sale on Wednesday, and while it’s learned they are the best selling of 2022, it’s learned the Marvel movie is no match for Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Fandango tweeted that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sold the most tickets in 24 hours this year, but Deadline adds the ticket sales are the best since Spider-Man: No Way Home (which went on sale on Nov. 29, 2021), but didn’t topple them.

The news isn’t that surprising as the hype surrounding No Way Home was a lot greater than Doctor Strange 2, as the Spidey movie features an all-star cast that was promoted prior to the flick’s release which didn’t even include Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, while Marvel’s Multiverse of Madness is only promoting Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen, and nobody knows who the character of America Chavez is, played by Xochitl Gomez, and what is also interesting is that new footage apparently reveals scenes with Rachel McAdams have been cut or edited. Maybe Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness needs an injection of testosterone to get the fanboys excited?

Marvel fans should be at least happy that the ticket sales have beat DC’s The Batman, which went on to open to $134 million, so it’s a safe bet Doctor Strange 2 will open higher, but not as high as Spidey’s whopping $260 million.

Fandango has added that showtimes are selling out and that new showtimes were being added by theaters.

“The epic first day of presales for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness proves fans are beyond excited to experience all the thrills, chills and blockbuster surprises Marvel Studios is known to deliver,” said Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis in a statement.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gets released May 6 (Thursday previews on May 5) directed by Sam Raimi and also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, and Michael Stühlbarg.

Synopsis: The MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.
