Jeremy Irons Says Batman Vs. Superman Deserved A Kicking By Critics

The new Alfred for Batman Vs. Superman isn’t afraid to admit the movie had some faults.

In an interview with The Guardian, Irons agrees that Batman vs. Superman deserved a kicking from the critics, but does say it still made a lot of money.

“Deservedly so. I mean it took £800 million, so the kicking didn’t matter but it was sort of overstuffed,” Irons said. “It was very muddled. I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller, it’s more linear.”

Irons continues, possibly revealing the title of the Ben Affleck solo Batman movie, which Cosmic Book News was first told almost four years ago with “The Batman.”

“I’m tied into The Batman at the minute [the next installment, Justice League Part One, is due next year], which is nice because it’s a bit of income,” Irons said.

In Batman Vs. Superman, not only does Alfred play the “butler” role, but Alfred is also a highly trained soldier.

“If I was Mr and Mrs Wayne and I had a young son I thought could be kidnapped, killed or whatever because of his wealth, I’d make sure his guardian – his tutor, his mate – was somebody pretty capable,” Irons said.

Producer Charles Roven Gets The Boot Because of Batman Vs. Superman

Long time DC producer Charles Roven is reported to be getting diminished responsibilities as a result of the disappointing performance of Batman Vs. Superman.

Roven, who has been on the every DC film since Christopher Nolan’s 2005 Batman Begins, is said to no longer be producing certain DC movies, according to THR, with The Flash and Aquaman named (movies not yet filming).

It’s said talks are underway within WB to have Charles Roven as more of an executive producer role and one who is not involved in day-to-day production.

It is said that Roven could still be a producer on various sequels of movies he is already producing.

Charles Roven was producer on Man of Steel and Batman Vs. Superman and is currently the producer on Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League.

It’s noted that one reason for the shift is due to WB wanting to increase the number of DC productions, with it said it’s physically impossible for one man to handle all the load.

It recently became known that Geoff Johns and WB exec Jon Berg are now co-running the DC films, with this report adding Berg is handling day-to-day operations on Justice League.

Regarding Zack Snyder receiving any blame, no report has specifically mentioned any ramifications for the director, which could be due to WB simply not wanting bad publicity with Justice League coming out. It is said WB is moving away from Zack Snyder’s “brain trust” of which Charles Roven was a part of (and wife Deborah, Richard Suckle and Wesley Collar).

How About Jake Gyllenhaal As The Riddler?

With a new Batman movie in the works, how about a Riddler on screen that is as worthy as Heath Ledger’s Joker?

We did see Riddler Easter Eggs in Batman vs. Superman (above), so it’s at least confirmed the character is in the DCEU and also probable that Batman has had a run in or two with Edward Nygma.

So who should play the Riddler?

Well, how about Jake Gyllenhaal, who was actually David Goyer’s pick to play Batman for the Christopher Nolan films.

Cool fan art serviced of Gyllenhaal on Reddit which makes a pretty convincing case it could work:

Geoff Johns Confirms Working On Solo Ben Affleck Batman Movie

Geoff Johns, who was recently said to have been appointed to co-run DC films, confirms involvement in the new Ben Affleck Batman movie.

Johns also talks a bit about being the DC Entertainment chief creative officer, but it’s noted he wouldn’t confirm being the new head of DC movies.

My job is to help other Warner Brothers divisions work with DC. I work with Warner TV and producers to get these shows up and running, in particular with ‘The Flash,’ where I co-created the show, wrote a few episodes, wrote the pilot episode.”

“I work with other people, Ames Kirshen in games, the studios like Rocksteady and Netherrealm, go in there on character choices, story they’re going to do and brainstorm on that, try to keep it true to comics.

“I do get to say I’m working on ‘Batman’ with Ben Affleck. That gets the Thanksgiving table excited, especially my brother.”

No release date has yet been announced for the new Batman movie, which is said to possibly feature a Red Hood storyline or even all the Batman villains. According to previous reports, Johns co-wrote the script with Affleck, who is also supposed to direct. A few years ago we were even first told the title might be “The Batman.”

WB Confirms Dead Robin Batman Vs. Superman Identity

Warner Bros. finally confirms the identity of the dead Robin from the Batman Vs. Superman costume seen in the Batcave.

A sneak peek at WB’s new DC Exhibit features the costume in which the tour guide confirms it’s for Jason Todd.

“This was one of the big things from Batman vs. Superman right across this way. The Jason Todd Robin suit,” Tour guide John confirms in the video below. “Spray painted on the front ‘Ha ha. The joke’s on you Batman.’ Those of you who know the storyline, know what happened to this Robin. Comic book fans unite!”

Tour guide John also noted the costumes used in the exhibit are not replicas, but authentic and straight from production.

Some other details about this Robin:

Affleck offered about Batman: “He’s bitterly disappointed in the past that he’s lost this guy who fought by his side. That character’s death must have been devastating to him, and he’s suffered. We get the sense that he’s suffered a lot of devastating losses before this movie even starts… He’s projecting his own sense of failure, his own sense of disillusionment, his own cynicism onto Superman.

Zack Snyder on this Robin: “In my mind it was that Robin died about ten years earlier during some run-in with a young Joker, and that was interesting to me, sort of a fun back story to play with. I felt like the whole idea was that there had been loss and there had been sacrifice. In a weird way he sacrificed everything to be Batman. He doesn’t have a life outside the cave. I thought by including Robin – a dead Robin –  was helping us understand that he’s been on quite a little journey.”

It’s been rumored that Jason Todd and the Red Hood will be a part of the Ben Affleck Batman movie as well.

Ben Affleck Said To Be Working On Justice League Rewrites

A couple of days ago saw it revealed that Ben Affleck has been named as an executive producer on the Justice League movie.

It was reported that Ben Affleck “will work with director Zack Snyder and screenwriter Chris Terrio behind the scenes to make the film the best it can be.”

Now it’s learned that some of Affleck’s duties will be to help rewrite the Justice League script (which is currently filming).

While Forbes is spinning the news that Affleck is simply helping out to get the Justice League script more in tune with his Batman solo movie, I’m guessing it has more to do with the trainwreck of a script that was Batman Vs. Superman (and of course the negative reviews, reactions and poor box office performance).

While Terrio might be an Oscar award-winning Hollywood screenplay writer, his Batman Vs. Superman script was a complete disaster. Now whether that’s Terrio’s fault, Snyder’s fault or David Goyer’s fault is anyone’s guess (or all three), the fact is Terrio never read a comic book in his life prior to writing Batman Vs. Superman, and Terrio is said to have at least written the new and younger Lex Luthor, which a lot of fans loathed.

So it’s definitely a good thing Ben Affleck is coming on board to offer his two cents on Justice League. Affleck also co-wrote the upcoming solo Batman movie with DC Entertainment chief creative officer and comic book writer Geoff Johns. It’s assumed Affleck will direct the solo Batman movie as well.

Affleck is also currently in the UK with his family for the filming of Justice League.

“Justice League” has a November 17, 2017 release directed by Zack Snyder starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon and Willem Dafoe in an unknown role.

Batman Vs. Superman Bat Crypt Creature Concept Art & Figure Revealed

Check out concept art of the “Bat Creature” from the Wayne Family Crypt scene in Batman Vs. Superman as well as the DC Comics Multiverse action figure.

The text on the concept art reads:

The nearby family crypt containing the remains of his parents, Thomas and Martha, is also in a similar state of neglect. It is a reminder of the night they were murdered, when the three of them went into the city to take in a movie. The loss of his parents at such an early age was the impetus for his crime-fighting career, but that event still has the power to invade his sleep with nightmarish visions, all these years later.

Looks a bit like Man-Bat, too.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is directed by Zack Snyder starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch and Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves. Synopsis:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Ben Affleck Named Executive Producer On Justice League Movie

More than likely as a result of the lackluster performace and reviews for Batman Vs. Superman, Ben Affleck has now come on board the Justice League movie as executive producer.

Deadline reports Ben Affleck “will work with director Zack Snyder and screenwriter Chris Terrio behind the scenes to make the film the best it can be.”

The article also notes: “Affleck is doing this to be supportive of Snyder, with whom he worked well on Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” and also that: “Warner Bros is still figuring out its stylistic superhero mojo, and Affleck will help.”

Affleck is also co-writing, directing and starring in the upcoming standalone Batman movie.

Batman Vs. Superman has grossed $864 million, which is shy of the $900 million needed for the movie to take a profit and well shy of the magic billion dollar number WB was hoping for.

There have been a lot of rumors and controversy as of late surrounding Zack Snyder and Batman Vs. Superman ranging from comic book professionals telling Snyder FU, to The Flash losing its director, to the panic button being hit.

Gerry Conway Says FU Zack Snyder About Batman Vs. Superman & More

Zack Snyder has come under fire for his depiction of the DC Universe: Batman kills, Superman kills, just about everything Superman has been butchered, etc.

Now legendary comic book creator Gerry Conway reacts to Snyder’s Batman Vs. Superman and DCEU.

Quotes Zack Snyder made back in 2008 have surfaced, which caused Conway to take to Twitter to slam Snyder with a big “FU.”

Here are Snyder’s quotes:

You could call it “high-brow” comics, but to me, that comic book was just pretty sexy! I had a buddy who tried getting me into “normal” comic books, but I was all like, “No one is having sex or killing each other. This isn’t really doing it for me.” I was a little broken, that way. So whenWatchmen came along, I was, “This is more my scene.”

and

Everyone says that about [Christopher Nolan’s] Batman Begins. “Batman’s dark.” I’m like, okay, “No, Batman’s cool.” He gets to go to a Tibetan monastery and be trained by ninjas. Okay? I want to do that. But he doesn’t, like, get raped in prison. That could happen in my movie. If you want to talk about dark, that’s how that would go.

Here is what Gerry Conway, co-creator of Punisher, writer of Amazing Spider-Man, writer of death of Gwen Stacy, writer of JLA, creator of Firestorm, had to say:

Fuck you, Zack Snyder. “Zack Snyder’s baffling vision for superhero movies, explained by Zack Snyder”

The real mystery is why Warners gave him their whole superhero franchise after “Watchmen” and “Sucker Punch” flopped

Ah, the “sunk cost fallacy” in action, illustrating the Escalation of Commitment principle

Which part is garbage? Snyder’s obnoxious view of superheroes, or calling him out for those views? Warners’ continued support of Zack Snyder despite evidence he’s a terrible choice for superhero movies, explained:

But they ARE Snyder quotes and clearly reflect his current thinking as evidenced by #BvS. Seems relevant to me.

To be fair, #BvS is kind of a “fuck you” in its own way. Google “Jimmy Olsen fun Zack Snyder” if you think otherwise

Ben Affleck Speculated For Wonder Woman Movie Cameo

We’ve first seen Ben Affleck in Batman Vs. Superman, which will be followed by an appearance in Suicide Squad.

Affleck is also starring in the two Justice League movies and the standalone Batman film of which he is writing, directing and starring in.

Now it’s possible Ben Affleck might be featured in the Gal Gadot Wonder Woman movie as well.

Way back yonder, I was told Ben Affleck had signed on for a “huge” multi-picture deal to appear as Bruce Wayne and Batman in the DCEU.

While there is presently no confirmation of Ben Affleck or Bruce Wayne in Wonder Woman, there is confirmation Wayne Enterprises will be featured in the film.

A new Wonder Woman set image has hit the net featuring Gal Gadot along with a Wayne Enterprises armored vehicle, which may suggest Gotham City as well.

Not only does the image hint Ben Affleck might be appearing in the movie, but also that Wonder Woman may take part in the present day, as it’s known Wonder Woman is set in WWI as well.

“Wonder Woman” has a June 2, 2017 release date.

Batman Vs. Superman Dead Robin Seemingly Confirmed As Jason Todd

In the comics, Jason Todd died on April 27, 1985.

Yesterday saw the official Batman Vs. Superman Instagram account reveal that the Robin in the movie died 20 years ago on the same day.

Now it could be just a coincidence, but some reddit users don’t think so, and then there is the fact that the Red Hood is rumored for the solo Ben Affleck Batman movie.

It also means possibly that Dick Grayson is Nightwing in the DCEU.

Justice League 2017: J.K. Simmons Talks Playing Commissioner Gordon

The DCEU Justice League will have a new Commissioner Gordon, played by the recently announced J.K. Simmons.

Collider caught up with the actor to get his thoughts. You can also read what the previous Gordon, Gary Oldman, had to say about giving advice to Simmons.

On reading the comics:

Well, to read the comics, yes, absolutely. I’m still a couple of months out from doing that and I have two other films before then, so I haven’t gotten started on that. Obviously, a lot of really wonderful actors have played that character previously, and most of them I saw at the time the movies came out, never imagining that I would be doing the same thing. So, I can’t say that I don’t have some impression of that character in my head that’s based on what I saw, but I’m not planning on going back and watching any of the other films. I’m just planning on learning as much as I can about him through the comics and getting my feet wet in the first movie, and then hopefully continuing on from there. I take this from my days doing theater. If I was doing a musical, I would never listen to the cast album because I wanted to do my version of something. I’m sure there will be differences and similarities with what Gary Oldman or Pat Hingle have done before, but I’m just going to try to do my take on it and be as informed as I can about the rich history of the Batman universe, going into it.

On also playing J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man:

There are easy comparisons to make. I wasn’t a big comic book reading kid, so I did a fair amount of reading when I was playing Jameson, who was very much the comic relief in those movies. Even in the comics, he was a blowhard who was all bark and very rarely bite. My understanding, from what I’ve learned so far about Commissioner Gordon, is that he’s the older guy with the mustache who relates with our hero in a certain way. Other than that, it’s a vastly different character and much more of a stronger, impactful character in the DC universe.

Simmons as Commissioner Gordon and Wilem Dafoe in an unknown role.

WB Officially Announces R-Rating For Batman: The Killing Joke Animated Movie

Following last night’s news that the Batman: The Killing Joke animated movie will have an R-rating, now WB has officially announced and confirmed the news.

See below.

WARNER BROS. HOME ENTERTAINMENT ACCEPTS MPAA “R” RATING FOR BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE

All-New Animated DC Universe Original Movie to Authentically Reflect Best-Selling & Eisner Award-Winning Graphic Novel; First Non-PG/PG-13 Rated Film in 9-Year History of Franchise

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has accepted the MPAA’s “R” rating for its upcoming animated film, Batman: The Killing Joke, choosing to remain true to the landmark DC Comics graphic novel’s violent, controversial story, and making the film the first non-PG/PG-13 rated movie in the nine-year history of the DC Universe Original Movie franchise.

Batman: The Killing Joke, one of the best-selling graphic novels in history, tells the tale of The Joker’s origin story – from his humble beginnings as a struggling comic, to his fateful encounter with Batman that changes both of their lives forever. Actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprise their Batman: The Animated Series roles as Batman and The Joker, respectively.

Since its inception in 2007, the DC Universe Original Movie franchise has brought classic and current DC Comics stories and characters to animated life through a series of primarily PG-13 rated films. Throughout the 26-film history of this popular franchise, Warner Bros. Animation, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have crafted animated productions that appeal to the adult fan – from adaptations of fan favorite stories (Superman: Doomsday, Justice League: The New Frontier, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) to liberal adaptations of contemporary tales (Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, Batman: Bad Blood, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox) to original narratives (Batman: Gotham Knight, Wonder Woman, Justice League: Gods & Monsters).

Animation visionary Bruce Timm guided the DC Universe Original Movie franchise for its initial 16 films, then returned last summer with his own original story, Justice League: Gods & Monsters. Timm takes the reigns once again for Batman: The Killing Joke, reuniting a trio of actors (Conroy, Hamill & Tara Strong) from the game-changing Batman: The Animated Series cast to add even greater reverence to this heralded tale. Recognizing the fans’ dedication to the highly acclaimed graphic novel, Timm has worked meticulously to accurately maintain the intense adult content of The Killing Joke.

“From the start of production, we encouraged producer Bruce Timm and our team at Warner Bros. Animation to remain faithful to the original story – regardless of the eventual MPAA rating,” said Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation & Warner Digital Series. “The Killing Joke is revered by the fans, particularly for its blunt, often-shocking adult themes and situations. We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience – the comics-loving community – with an animated film that authentically represented the tale they know all too well.”

At this time, there are no plans for an edited, PG-13 version of the film.

A two-time Eisner Award winner written by renowned comics author Alan Moore, Batman: The Killing Joke has maintained an unparalleled popularity throughout its 28 years of existence – as evidenced by its ranking as the best-selling graphic novel of 2015. Batman: The Killing Joke was greenlit in 2013 and announced in July 2015 at Comic Con International in San Diego.
