Dan Abnett Now Exclusive With DC Comics

Fan-favorite writer Dan Abnett has signed exclusively with DC Comics.

Abnett, known for penning Marvel Cosmic, Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova, will be writing Aquaman and Titans for DC.

Brad Walker, Abnett’s artist on Guardians, also returns for Aquaman.

See the full announcement below.

Good move, DC.

‘AQUAMAN’ AND ‘TITANS’ WRITER DAN ABNETT SIGNS WITH DC ENTERTAINMENT

Fan-Favorite Writer to Pen AQUAMAN and TITANS as Part of DC Universe: Rebirth

BURBANK, Calif. (May 26, 2016) – DC Entertainment continues to add top-flight talent to its creative roster, announcing today that it has reached an agreement with writer Dan Abnett to create comic book content solely for the company’s DC and Vertigo imprints. In addition to writing Aquaman: Rebirth #1 and Aquaman #1 in June, Abnett will also pen Titans: Rebirth #1, continuing threads from his storyline in his current Titans Hunt miniseries. Shipping twice monthly, the Aquaman art team includes talented artists Phil Briones, Scot Eaton, Oscar Jimenez, Jesus Merino and Brad Walker, while the monthly Titans will see artist Brett Booth accompany Abnett on the book.

“Dan Abnett is the perfect fit for Aquaman and Titans,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee. “He skillfully balances great dialogue and high-octane action, making for great reads every time. DC is excited that he’ll be giving fans more great stories in both books as we enter into our line wide REBIRTH re-launch in June and beyond.”

Aquaman continues the story of Arthur Curry, the King of Atlantis, as he seeks to reconcile his dual heritage of land and sea. A citizen of both worlds, Arthur seeks to unite Atlantis with the rest of the global community. But his plans will be thrown into chaos with the return of his arch-nemesis Black Manta, who seeks to destroy the careful balance of peace, and bring Aquaman’s world crashing down.

Titans continues story beats from Abnett’s run on Titans Hunt, with teammates Wally West, Donna Troy, Arsenal, Garth, Lilith and Nightwing all reunited after the disastrous consequences of having their memories lost. Now, with their memories intact they will attempt to reunite as a team, and stop the demon that broke them apart and is a threat to reality itself.

“I was delighted by Dan DiDio’s invitation to sign exclusively with DC,” said Abnett. “My recent work for DC, on projects like He-Man, Earth 2 and Titans Hunt have been both rewarding and enjoyable, and now with Aquaman’s Rebirth in the mix, and the Titans as a new series, it seems like the ideal time to really focus on DC work and do my best to knock each and every issue out of the park. Not that we have baseball parks in the UK. We have cricket pitches. But the point stands, anyway…”

Abnett makes his REBIRTH debut on Aquaman: Rebirth #1 (on sale June 8) and Aquaman #1 (on sale June 22) beginning an all-new story arc, blasting out of the events of the DC Universe: Rebirth #1 special, written by Geoff Johns (Justice League, Green Lantern: Rebirth, Flash: Rebirth), that went on sale May 25. As part of the REBIRTH line wide re-launch, Aquaman will ship twice monthly, and at a lower price of $2.99.

Scott Snyder Rumored To Leave Batman For Detective Comics & More

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23968:]]

Following the earlier rumors of the upcoming DC relaunch, likely called “Rebirth,” a new batch of rumors has hit the net.

Bleeding Cool is stating Scott Snyder will be departing Batman – but not the character – as Snyder will move on to Detective Comics, which he was previously writing prior to the New 52. It remains to be seen what happens with Greg Capullo, who is going on a hiatus to do art for Mark Millar.

It’s also said Batman will go bi-monthly.

BC also has it that a new Titan series – minus the “Teen” – will be launched possibly out of Dan Abnett’s Titans Hunt book.

Titans TV Series Cancelled Because of Script

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23665:]]

Yesterday saw the news that TNT had passed on the planned DC Titans TV series.

Now Kevin Reilly, TNT’s chief creative officer tells the reason why to THR:

How much of the decision not to move forward with the DC Comics project Titans, also from Warner Bros., was based on the fact that you don’t own it?

It wasn’t. Akiva [Goldsman] is a talented guy, [but] the script just wasn’t there. There is an unbelievable glut of superhero things in the market right now and if you have a really good one, clearly people are up for it. But I just don’t think that there’s a need for one that, for me, at least on paper didn’t seem to be screaming to get made.

The Titans series was said to have been possibly in the same universe as Arrow and The Flash centering on Dick Grayson as Robin, who would eventuall have gone on to become Nightwing, and was working as a private detective in Boston. Titans was also said to include Barbara Gordon, Hawk and Dove, and Starfire, with Cyborg and Beast Boy as possibilities down the road.

There’s speculation some of the Titans characters may be featured in the WB movie universe (Cyborg is confirmed), but that’s all it’s really to be considered right now.

Titans TV Series Scrapped By TNT

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23665:]]

It’s learned the planned Titans series set for TNT isn’t happening.

Deadline reports TNT has decided not to proceed with the Teen Titans live-action series, even though it was ordered to pilot.

“We decided it wasn’t where we wanted to go,” TNT president Kevin Reilly said at TCA.

Previously released details on the Titans series include mention it may have been in the same universe as Arrow and The Flash. It was said at the start of the series, Dick Grayson was still using his Robin identity, but eventually would have gone on to become Nightwing, and was working as a private detective in Boston. The series was also said to include Barbara Gordon, Hawk and Dove, and Starfire, with Cyborg and Beast Boy as possibilities down the road.

It may be possible that WB actually scrapped the project as we do know Cyborg is a part of their movie universe. While The Flash is featured in both their movie and TV universes, WB did axe use of the Suicide Squad in TV and possibly Green Lantern. In addition, it’s reported that WB is feeling the heat as a result of the popularity of Grant Gustin, which may cause issues with the Ezra Miller version of The Flash. It’s possible WB may not want to create additional problems by having Teen Titans characters on the small and big screens simultaneously.

Nightwing has been rumored for Batman Vs. Superman and the Ben Affleck solo Batman movie, as well as DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow.

Steve McQueen Teases More Nightwing

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21919:]]

It’s been a while, but Steve McQueen is back at it seemingly teasing Nightwing.

McQueen, who over a year ago made mention he was in talks for Nightwing in Arrow, but then did a 180 reversing himself, posted the following image on his Instagram account.

The image features a Nightwing hoodie and comic books.

“Been getting cool gifts on set recently,” McQueen added, who is filming for the NBC series Chicago Fire.

Nightwing is scheduled to be a part of the upcoming TNT Titans series, which is currently in development and may begin filming in October titled “BlackBirds.”

Previous character details on Titans revealed at the start of the series/pilot Dick Grayson will still be using his Robin identity, but will eventually become Nightwing, and has been working as a private detective in Boston; Barbara Gordon will be wheel-chair bound and will be the team’s hacker; Hawk and Dove are said to be in a relationship; Starfire is said to appear at the end of the pilot and involved in a love triangle with Nightwing and Batgirl.

Regarding Cyborg and Beast Boy, it was stated they don’t show up in the pilot, but it’s possible to include them eventually.
