Leaked: Spider-Man Can Be Black In The Movies But Not Peter Parker

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21079:]]

The other day saw a second batch of Sony documents leaked online as a result of the earlier North Korean hack.

Now what looks to be a licensing agreement between Marvel and Sony listing mandatory movie characteristics for both Spider-Man and Peter Parker has hit the net.

The document does reveal that “Spider-Man” can be black (or whatever ethnicity), but that “Peter Parker” must be white.

The document also allows for a gay Spider-Man as long as Marvel first portrayed the alter ego of the character that way first.

It probably should be noted the document/agreement may not be valid anymore as it was created in 2011, and Sony and Marvel may have come to a new deal with their joint venture.

What the licensing agreement essentially does is limit Sony’s creative control over the character, which makes sense as Spider-Man is owned by Marvel.

Here is the list of the mandatory character traits:

Mandatory Spider-Man Character Traits: Spider-Man (whether Peter Parker or an alternate Spider-Man character) must always strictly conform to the following “Mandatory Character Traits”:

•Male
• Does not torture
• Does not kill unless in defense of self or others
• Does not use foul language beyond PG-13
• Does not smoke tobacco
• Does not sell/distribute illegal drugs
• Does Not abuse alcohol
• Does not have sex before the age of 16, does not have sex with anyone below the age of 16
• Not a homosexual (unless Marvel has portrayed that alter ego as a homosexual)

Peter Parker traits. Depiction of Peter Parker or his Spider-Man alter ego must conform to the following character traits:

• His full name is Peter Benjamin Parker.
• He is Caucasian and heterosexual.
• His parents become absent from his life during his childhood.
• From the time his parents become absent he is raised by Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York City.
• He gains his powers while attending either middle school or college.
• He gains his powers from being bitten by a spider.
• He designs his first red and blue costume.
• The black costume is a symbiotic and not designed by him.
• He is raised in a middle class household in Queens, New York.
• He attends or attended high school in Queens, New York, and he attends or attended college in New York City, New York.

Sony & Valiant Comics Announce 5-Picture Deal for Bloodshot, Harbinger & Harbinger Wars

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20160:]]

Sony and Valiant Comics have announced a five-picture deal to bring Bloodshot, Harbinger and Harbinger Wars to the big screen.

The movies will be a part of a shared universe film event.

Full details:

Valiant Entertainment and Sony Pictures today announced a deal to bring two of Valiant’s award-winning comic book superhero franchises—BLOODSHOT and HARBINGER—to the big screen over the course of five feature films that will culminate in the shared universe crossover film, HARBINGER WARS.

BLOODSHOT, arriving in theaters in 2017, will kick off the five-picture plan leading to HARBINGER WARS and will be directed by David Leitch & Chad Stahelski (John Wick) from a script by Jeff Wadlow (Kick Ass 2) and Eric Heisserer (Story of Your Life). Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe from Original Film (The Fast and the Furious franchise) and Dinesh Shamdasani from Valiant Entertainment will produce the film. Matthew Vaughn and Jason Kothari will serve as executive producers.

HARBINGER will follow shortly thereafter from a script by Eric Heisserer (Story of Your Life). Sony and Valiant remain tight-lipped about potential directors. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe from Original Film (The Fast and the Furious franchise) and Dinesh Shamdasani from Valiant Entertainment will produce.

Both BLOODSHOT and HARBINGER will be followed by sequels before the title characters confront each other head on in HARBINGER WARS—a motion picture directly inspired by Valiant’s critically acclaimed 2013 comic book crossover of the same name. Andrea Giannetti will oversee the five-picture HARBINGER WARS initiative for Sony Pictures.

“Valiant is one of the most successful publishers in the history of comics, and Neal is one of the best action producers in the business today. This is a formidable partnership that will bring two incredibly commercial franchises with global appeal together on the big screen,” said Sony Entertainment Motion Picture Group President Doug Belgrad. “The long-term plan that begins with BLOODSHOT will be a considerable priority for Sony in the months and years to come.”

Brought back from the dead and infused with cutting-edge nanotechnology by private security contractor Project Rising Spirit, Bloodshot is a nearly unstoppable killing machine equipped with enhanced strength, speed, endurance, and healing. Created by Kevin VanHook, Don Perlin, and Bob Layton in 1992, Bloodshot is one of the most successful new comic book characters of the past two decades with more than 100 issues published and lifetime sales of more than 7 million copies in multiple languages around the world. After returning with a sold-out new series in 2012, Bloodshot’s latest chapter recently began with the release of Bloodshot Reborn #1 in April—the first issue of a new series from New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire and artist Mico Suayan.

Centered on telekinetic teenage runaway Peter Stanchek and his recruitment into the mysterious Harbinger Foundation by secretive CEO and philanthropist Toyo Harada, Harbinger was created by former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter and artist David Lapham in 1992. Having sold more than 5 million copies worldwide in multiple languages across more than 60 issues, Harbinger returned with a new series in 2012 to multiple sold-out printings and widespread critical acclaim.

Bloodshot and Harbinger collide in Harbinger Wars—Valiant’s 2013 crossover event from writers Joshua Dysart and Duane Swierczynski with art by Clayton Henry, Clayton Crain, and Pere Perez. Valiant’s first crossover of the modern era, Harbinger Wars would go on to become the year’s best-selling crossover event from an independent publisher and spawned multiple sold-out printings.

“Bloodshot and Harbinger are two of the great untapped franchises anywhere in comics,” said producer and founder of Original Film, Neal H. Moritz. “In partnership with Sony and Valiant, we look forward to building the next great generation of superhero films.”

“Sony Pictures and Neal Moritz are the ideal partners to bring the world of Bloodshot and Harbinger to life,” said Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani. “They understand exactly what makes these characters tick and the exciting potential that they hold. These films are just the first step in partnership with Sony to bring Valiant’s biggest heroes to new audiences worldwide.”

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015, Valiant is one of the most successful comic book publishing companies in the history of the medium with more than 81 million comics sold and a library of more than 2,000 distinct characters. Established by a brain trust of legendary comics creators, Valiant’s heroes and villains inhabit the largest independently owned superhero universe anywhere in comics. Re-established in 2005 as Valiant Entertainment, the company returned to great commercial and critical success in 2012, winning a Diamond Gem Award for Publisher of the Year and numerous industry awards and accolades. To date, Valiant’s titles consistently rate among the best reviewed in comics.

Valiant’s comic book universe—which includes the best-selling superheroes Bloodshot, Harbinger, X-O Manowar, Shadowman, and Archer & Armstrong, among many others—is characterized by a grounded, character-driven approach to storytelling. Its stories take place in a world only subtly removed from our own—one inspired by real-world science and inhabited by morally ambiguous heroes that often forgo capes and secret identities.

In March, Valiant announced that it partnered with Beijing-based entertainment company DMG for nine-figures of film financing capital for the production of theatrical films and television programs based on Valiant’s library of iconic superhero characters.

With over fifty films released, Neal Moritz’s worldwide box office gross exceeds $7 billion. His hits include: the Jump Street franchise, The Fast and The Furious franchise, I Am Legend, XXX, Click,Sweet Home Alabama, S.W.A.T., Battle: Los Angeles, and The Green Hornet.

In addition to BLOODSHOT, HARBINGER, and HARBINGER WARS, Moritz also has several films in development with Sony Pictures, including Passengers, Christian the Lion, 23 Jump Street, Cliffhanger, Rockets Red Glare, and A Prophet.

Spider-Man Sony Hacked Documents Now Online

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20096:]]

The leaked e-mails and documents as a result of the recent Sony hack are now online.

WikiLeaks published all the hacked documents, which includes information on Spider-Man and Marvel.

The WikiLeaks site has a search engine which allows users to input keywords, with “Spider-Man” returning more than 1000 results (inputting “Marvel” yields a similar number).

Leaked e-mails also reveal communications between Pascal and Disney billionaire and Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter.

E-mails reveal that Pascal and Perlmutter had a friendly relationship as e-mails are regularly sent back and forth between the two ranging from Pascal congratulating Marvel for a movie’s success, to Perlmutter and Pascal talking about Kevin Feige, to Perlmutter offering Pascal a Happy Jewish New Year and a happy birthday.

Further e-mails reveal some sort of problem with Drew Goodard as litigation is cited. E-mails from Head Of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb state something about litigation, Drew Goddard, Sony and Netflix – with Perlmutter replying to Pascal they should be “very concerned,” which was dated April 15, 2014. Subsequent e-mails read Marvel worked everything out, with Pascal excited for the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Goddard writing Sinister Six. Perlmutter regularly replies Marvel and Disney will help in any way and often calls Spider-Man, Marvel’s “baby.”

An e-mail sent from the CEO of Sony, Michael Lynton, reads he thought putting Spider-Man in Captain America 3 served no benefit to Marvel: “Putting Spider-Man in Captain America 3 with Chris Evans and with Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man doesn’t provide much benefit to Marvel, but it definitely provides a significant amount of benefit to Sony and to Spider-Man.”

An e-mail offers a tidbit about Sinister Six in that Spider-Man is set to appear. Andrew Garfield had questions about his pay as he wondered if it would be the equivalent of  an “Amazing Spider-Man 3,” as well as if it would fulfill his three movie contract obligation. Sony’s Doug Belgrad told Garfield’s reps Sinister Six was a “standalone” with Spider-Man only set to “appear.” In addition, a Sony e-mail reads they are not paying Garfield “the same money.”

Another e-mail from Perlmutter to Lynton reads Perlmutter apparently is against solo female movies and cites Electra, Catwoman and Supergirl as being “disasters.”

An e-mail from an executive at Marvel, John Turitzin, concerns Fox’s Deadpool movie as an article at Variety is cited to state Kevin Feige is producing. Turitzin’s e-mail to Bob Cohen of Fox Studios tells Fox that isn’t the case and to correct their information. The e-mail says Marvel doesn’t want people to think there is a chance of a Marvel / Fox crossover with the “falsehood” of Feige being involved on Deadpool (dated October 2014).

Regarding Spider-Man returning to Marvel, e-mails from Lynton to Perlmutter feature a list of articles on various sites, dated October 2014, about the character’s return. Perlmutter states some of the mainstream press is asking about Spider-Man returning to Marvel – with Perlmutter questioning “how can this be?” – and states it could be a problem. Lynton responds it has been brought to his attention, but he has no idea where it’s coming from, and that it can be ignored.

Other leaked Spider-Man documents include information on the Amazing Spider-Man films media budget, TV spots, Amazing Spider-Man 2 Superbowl trailer, marketing strategy (where a memo mentions they think AS2 will do better than the first), and lots more.

Bear in mind the e-mails were date 2014, so obviously things could have changed regarding some of the contents and subjects (and obviously have such as Spider-Man now a part of Marvel).

Russo Bros. Sign First-Look Deal With Sony

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19480:]]Anthony & Joe Russo At Captain America: Winter Soldier Premiere

Joe and Anthony Russo are developing The Gray Man at Sony, and now it’s learned the duo behind the likes of Captain America: Winter Soldier have signed a first-look three-year deal with Sony, which is set to kick off this April.

“Joe and Anthony Russo are terrifically exciting filmmakers with a sensibility that matches the tastes of audiences worldwide,” Sony producer Doug Belgrad said in a statement.

“Joe and Anthony Russo have demonstrated their ability to bring excitement, audacity and phenomenal commercial success to a variety of genres and endeavors,” added Michael DeLuca and Hannah Minghella, “and we are proud to add them to the family. Their original voices and fearless execution are a tremendous addition to our studio.”

“We’re thrilled to make a home at Sony Pictures, and to be partnering with the entire team,” Joe and Anthony Russo said in a joint statement. “The studio has created an environment that is not only collaborative, but truly filmmaker-friendly and we’re excited to begin developing both new and ambitious material with them.”

The Russo brothers are directing Captain America: Civil War for Disney/Marvel and The Avengers Infinity War movies.

Previous leaked Sony e-mails also revealed interest in Spider-Man by the Russo brothers. Sony has yet to announce a director on the new Spider-Man (or a new actor), but the Russo’s seem a perfect fit.

Spider-Man Back In Trouble? Tom Rothman Named Head Of Sony Motion Picture Group

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19342:]]

It’s learned that Tom Rothman has replaced Amy Pascal and has been named the head of Sony’s motion picture group.

We’re not sure if or how this will affect plans for the new Spider-Man, but for comic book movie fans, red flags should be going off.

Rothman was recently said to have been let go from Fox due to a lackluster performance, with Rothman said to have interfered in the production of X-Men Origins: Wolverine without the director’s knowledge and apparently was also responsible for blocking the Deadpool movie (see below). Rothman was also behind X-Men: The Last Stand.

Regarding Spider-Man, Amy Pascal is spearheading the new direction as part of a new Sony venture production wing, so it’s possible Rothman’s input may be minimal. In addition, Marvel’s Kevin Feige is onboard as producer.

The Amazing Spider-Man movies ran into problems when the producers didn’t care much for director Marc Webb’s input, which obviously led to the current situation. Hopefully, history isn’t going to repeat itself with Rothman.

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld isn’t a fan and tweeted the following about the Rothman news:

Spider-Man Talks May Be Happening Between Sony & Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19066:]]

Yesterday saw news that Amy Pascal had stepped down as co-chairman of Sony Pictures with it said Pascal was going on to be a part of a new production venture and producer on future Amazing Spider-Man movies.

Now in Variety‘s own report about Pascal’s departure, it’s mentioned the biggest decision for Pascal is how to handle the Spider-Man franchise, which did less than what was hoped as Sony thinks Spider-Man should be a billion dollar movie franchise.

While the report appears to just provide speculation as no sources are cited, it does note the plan to go forward with Sinister Six as a way to expand the Spider-Man franchise may need to be re-examined, as when Pascal was head of Sony movies, she was pursuing that path.

It’s stated in the article the new Sony regime may decide to return to the negotiation table with Marvel over Spider-Man’s rights.

Yesterday’s report did see mention by Pascal that the next two years of plans were already slated, so whatever could become of Spider-Man may already be set.

It’s also possible a deal with Marvel could already have gone through, and we are just waiting on the big announcement (Comic-Con?).

Spider-Man Back At Marvel? Amy Pascal Onboard As Producer

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19029:]]

Amy Pascal has stepped down from being co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and chairman of the Motion Picture Group.

She’s leaving to be a part of a new Sony production venture, which will see Pascal produce new movies.

THR reports part of the deal is for Pascal to be onboard as producer on the new all-female Ghostbusters film as well as future Amazing Spider-Man movies. It’s also reported Matt Tolmach will serve as a Spider-Man producer after having left his position as Columbia Pictures president.

Regarding whether Spider-Man has returned to Marvel is unknown, but the the officially released press details are rather interesting.

Pascal released a statement which reads in part plans are set for the next two years, which more than likely includes plans for Spider-Man (note: bold below my own).

“I have spent almost my entire professional life at Sony Pictures and I am energized to be starting this new chapter based at the company I call home,” Pascal said in a statement. “I have always wanted to be a producer. [Sony Entertainment CEO] Michael [Lynton] and I have been talking about this transition for quite some time, and I am grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to pursue my long-held dream and for providing unparalleled support. As the slate for the next two years has come together, it felt like the right time to transition into this new role. I am so grateful to my team, some of whom I have worked with for the last 20 years and others who have joined more recently. I am leaving the studio in great hands. I am so proud of what we have all done together and I look forward to a whole lot more.”

It’s further reported that Sony “will finance Pascal’s venture and retain all distribution rights worldwide to the films.”

Previously leaked e-mails that revealed Sony and Marvel were in talks for Spider-Man mentioned Marvel wanted the creative rights with Sony keeping distribution rights.

However, what is unclear is whether Spider-Man is technically staying at Sony (with Pascal just on as producer), or if Spider-Man is moving to the new production wing under Pascal (and possibly Marvel).

The news of Amy Pascal coming onboard as producer follows reports that Sony was holding a Spider-Man summit in January. Leaked e-mails revealed that Pascal was undecided about Spider-Man returning to Marvel, with reports also stating Marvel wanted a new Spider-Man actor while Pascal wanted to keep Andrew Garfield.

It probably should be noted both Marvel and Sony recently denied rumors of Spider-Man returning to Marvel.

Sinister Six is supposed to be released next year, so more than likely announcements should be coming soon.

Sony Brazil Facebook also teased future plans for Spider-Man are underway as well as teasing Sinister Six.

Sinister Six Said To Be Happening; Spider-Man Might Not Be At Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18836:]]

A pair of interesting tweets, which have since been deleted, surfaced stating the Sinister Six movie is happening.

A resident of Vancouver tweeted, “It seems the @SinisterSix movie is going to shoot in Vancouver. I might see Spider-Man running around my hood! I’ll eat sand to be an extra.”

The Twitter user apparently got confirmation about Sinister Six from someone who worked on Planet of the Apes.

@Mugsyface dude who worked on Planet of the Apes and used our stock for it came back. Requested S6 stuff for research. Said it was happening.”

The news of Sony moving forward on Sinister Six brings up the question whether or not Spider-Man is back at Marvel.

According to leaked e-mails from back around November, Sony and Marvel were in talks for Spider-Man to return to Marvel.

The e-mails revealed that if Spider-Man returned to Marvel, Sony would be fast-tracking a new Spider-Man solo movie, and also that Sinister Six was up in the air.

A Spider-Man summit was also said to be held this month to determine the future of Spider-Man at Sony.

It’s possible with this news of Sony filming Sinister Six in Vancouver, that Sony is following their original plans to go with a Sinister Six movie first, possibly followed by Venom, a female superhero Spider-Man character film, and then Amazing Spider-Man 3.

In addition, both Sony and Marvel have recently denied rumors that Spider-Man is back at Marvel, with Sony stating the rumors had “no validity whatsoever” and Marvel seemingly being surprised by the latest rumors.

Marvel Surprised At Spider-Man Rumors

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18787:]]

This past week saw new Spider-Man rumors hit the net stating that Spider-Man in The Avengers: Infinity War – Part One was a done deal.

Following that, Sony quickly responded stating it wasn’t true.

Now some of the Hollywood trade reporters have gathered together on a podcast with some updated news.

Marc Graser of Variety, who broke the Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America 3 story, stated he talked with Marvel about the Infinity War rumor.

According to Graser, Marvel was surprised by the rumor and was “wondering why it popped up again” and “had no clue why.”

Graser also speculated about Spider-Man returning to Marvel where Graser said it will involve a lot of money.

Graser said it’s up to producer and the former head of Marvel Studios, Avi Arad, for Spider-Man to be featured in Disney movies as Arad controls Spider-Man at Sony.

Graser also pointed out that Spider-Man is really the only thing Arad has going on right now.

Another point was made that Disney is already making a lot of money from Spider-Man as they own the merchandising rights to the Spider-Man movies, so it’s not like they really need Spider-Man in their films.

“They would love Spider-Man to be in one of their movies, and it would just boost sales,” Graser said. “But they don’t need it.”

While Graser seemed to be insinuating it’s a long shot that Spider-Man would be back at Marvel, he did state that he wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel is having screenwriters working on scripts with Spider-Man in them just to have things ready if a deal does go through.

Regarding Spider-Man costing a lot of money, Disney did pay billions for Marvel and Star Wars, so it’s not like they haven’t dished it out before.

Amazing Spider-Man 3 Casting Call Goes Out

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18592:]]

Following leaked e-mails revealing that Spider-Man may be going back to Marvel Studios, a casting call has now gone out for “The Amazing Spider-Man 3.”

The casting call may actually lend credence to Spider-Man going back to Marvel as Sony previously didn’t have plans for a third Spider-Man movie before the Marvel talks.

Leaked e-mails revealed that if Spider-Man did go back to Marvel, Sony would want to fast-track another Spider-Man movie in order to follow Spider-Man’s appearance in Captain America 3.

The e-mails revealed that Marvel Studios wants Spider-Man for Captain America 3 as well as creative control, with Sony still holding distribution rights and the ability to make standalone Spider-Man movies.

The casting call does mention that “The Amazing Spider-Man 3” stars Andrew Garfield; however, that may not be much to go on as a separate casting call listed for Independence Day 2 has Will Smith as “rumored,” but Smith has been confirmed not to be returning.

The leaked e-mails did reveal Marvel wants a new actor in the role of Spider-Man, but internal communications between Sony execs did state Sony still wants Garfield.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 3” casting call also lists the city of Atlanta, Georgia, as the shooting location, which is where Pinewood Studios is located and where Marvel filmed the Ant-Man movie.

The information comes from Bill Beckman Casting, with the company described as: “Bill Beckman Casting has been casting for all major studios and production houses, including ABC, NBC, CBS, Warner Bros and Paramount…”

It has also been said Sony is holding a Spider-Man “Summit” this month to determine the character’s future with the company and possibly working with Marvel.

Watch: Spider-Man Sony Characters Demand Return To Marvel

We’ve seen the Spider-Man fanboys‘ message to Sony about returning to Marvel, now hear from the characters themselves!

The Make ‘Em Laughs Films YouTube Channel put together the above video using cosplay footage of the Sony Spider-Man characters.

Within the last month, due to the Sony e-mail hacks, it became known that Sony and Marvel either were or are in talks for Spider-Man to return to Marvel Studios.

The leaked information stated that Marvel would have creative control over Spider-Man, which includes a new actor and new costume.

It was said Marvel wants Spider-Man to appear in Captain America: Civil War, which will also star Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.

The leaked e-mails revealed the possible involvement of Captain America directors Anthony and Joe Russo in a new Spider-Man franchise in addition to possibly original Spider-Man director Sam Raimi being somehow involved.

It’s said Sony is having a “Spidey Summit” this month to work out the details.

Neither Sony nor Marvel have officially commented on Spider-Man returning to Marvel Studios.

Movie Review: Resident Evil: Damnation

Forget “Retribution;” Damnation Shows Evil Going Global

A Film Review of Resident Evil: Damnation

By: Lawrence Napoli

We are DAYS away from the release of my most anticipated videogame of 2012 in Resident Evil 6 and Capcom saw fit to release its most recent CG film a week prior in an effort to prime American fans for the kind of story, action and thrills that will be awaiting us all on October 2nd.  What better way to do this than by giving the fans a prequel (of sorts) that bridges the gap between Resident Evils 5 and 6 without making any actual reference to either?  This may sound a tad curious, but I attribute that to Japanese sensitivities to the concept of plot which I will explain later.  This original film produced by the coalition of Capcom, Digital Frontier and Sony Pictures Entertainment joins its brother (Resident Evil: Degeneration) as the only two films to be part of the official Resident Evil cannon and unlike its predecessor, Damnation delivers a high fidelity experience that is sharp on looks and intense on action.

By the start of Resident Evil 5, the concept of international bio-terrorism is in full swing because the Umbrella Corporation allegedly goes bankrupt and in the process, all of its viral research and development hits the global black market.  Anyone with a WIFI connection and a few million bucks could become a bio-terrorist overnight.  Damnation further explores the investigation of B.O.W. (bio-organic weapon) sightings in an Eastern European (ex-Soviet Block) country with fan favorite Leon S. Kennedy taking the lead.  Leon arrives in this country with a very obscure status as he doesn’t represent the CIA, Secret Service or BSAA in any capacity.  The only thing the viewer knows for sure is that Leon is still some sort of US government agent as Ingrid Hunnigan (from Resident Evil 4) continues to relay intelligence to Leon via his cell phone.  Leon is in full tactical gear as the country is in the midst of a civil war and the action simply shoots through the roof once he starts jogging to his next destination.

The overall story of Damnation is much more concise than any of the games because it strictly gravitates around the plot of this one setting and main character.  However, the typical mood of conspiracy and betrayal is as consistent as any other chapter in the Resident Evil saga.  As this franchise continues to move slightly away from “horror” to feature more “action;” Damnation is yet another perfect (or terrible, depending on your point of view) example of this strategy.  The director, Makoto Kamiya wanted the events of this film to depict Leon S. Kennedy as he “descends into hell” which would seem to evoke more “horror” elements to this story.  Sure, Leon gets disarmed at some point and only has his bound fists to survive for a while, but the fact that this character IS Leon removes ANY semblance of threat because fans know he’s a mainstay of the franchise and he IS in Resident Evil 6 as a primary character.  There is virtually no element of horror to this CG film because there is no dedication to building suspense.  Doing so requires many more moments of silence to allow the audience an anticipation of fear which the bullet and explosion filled pages of this particular script are ill equipped to produce.  Oh well, I guess this just means Damnation must settle for being a really good action film with plenty of gory violence, gunplay and slow motion, close quarter combat.

One other aspect of this story that demands singular recognition is the fact that the B.O.W.s being used throughout Damnation are within the framework of war.  As such, viewing classics like zombies, lickers, ganados, parasites and tyrants as alternatives to guns and grenades is a theme never before explored in Resident Evil.  What makes this exceptionally interesting is the unprecedented level of control that is demonstrated over these monsters in addition to the fact that they are used against each other on several occasions.  Ever find yourself cheering for the bad guy?  The player/audience has always seen these things as antagonists that need to be dispatched or avoided, but never as an option in combat scenarios.  It will be interesting to see if this concept is somehow applied to any gameplay mechanic in Resident Evil 6, so if it is – remember, you heard the prediction here first!

Resident Evil has always been a character driven drama so I was expecting to learn a little more about Leon S. Kennedy, the man, during yet another one man mission against the undead.  After the events of Resident Evil 2 very little has been revealed about this man other than his continued involvement from a distance during the plots of every game and his hush-hush government training post Raccoon City.  Unfortunately, Damnation is not very forthcoming about any new details concerning Leon; maintaining his status as an ultimate bad ass with unwavering ethical integrity.  Ho hum.

Whenever Leon is involved, it seems Ada Wong is not far to follow as she (yet again) appears to be infiltrating this particular dangerous environment as a spy working for “someone else” (not named Albert Wesker because he’s dead, at least I think).  If you have been living under a rock and have not seen any of the Resident Evil 6 trailers, Ada appears to be set up as the big bad in the upcoming game, thus working for herself all this time.  That certainly jives with her character type, yet Damnation is clear about establishing an unidentified employer backing Wong’s infiltration.  She’s still a sexy femme fatale and (you guessed it) very little else is revealed other than the fact that a more intimate relationship between her and Leon culminated prior to the events in Damnation.  She clearly cares about him, yet neither is truly smitten with the other despite an obvious attraction that was set up in RE2.

The rest of the characters in this CG film are not particularly interesting as they are dealt with (one way or the other) within the confines of this plot.  Degeneration approached its antagonists in the exact same fashion which, unfortunately, removes a healthy amount of danger and intrigue from these newly introduced characters.  I admire the Japanese filmmakers for creating this movie, but as a plot, does not stand on its own strength and really comes off as a strategic setup piece to get gamers used to the scale, scope and stakes of RE6.  These are the important bullet points I took away from Damnation:  1) Biohazards are potentially everywhere: from obscure rural communities to the largest of urban jungles in EVERY country.  2) Every variety of mutation you have seen thus far is probably going to make an appearance in the next game and the “zombies” that are supposedly making their triumphant return in RE6 are actually smart, weapon-wielding, ganados and not brainless T-virus victims.  3) Capcom’s marketing of the “3 campaign system” supposedly featuring 3 distinct play styles promising a return to “survival horror” in at least one of them is an absolute crock!  This film and the exceptional RE6 trailer attached to it cement this franchise in straight monster-slaughter action.  Accept it.

I liked parts of this film, but cannot admit to loving any of it.  The extra features on the Blu Ray disc are nothing to write home about, but the “making of” featurette is neat seeing the cast do all sorts of motion capture work on set.  I also found it interesting how this Japanese production company was using nothing but HP computer hardware for 100% of its production tools.  It’s just a simple observation.  This CG film is a vast improvement over Degeneration in almost every regard (look, sound and feel) with the exception of story.  Clearly, Capcom did not give director Makoto Kamiya the same leeway Paul W.S. Anderson had with his adaptations.  These films HAD to fit with the games and surely his options were limited.  Still, I was amazed that nothing more than the stellar action was at work in Damnation.  I wanted to see more character revelations, more connectivity with the games and overall more relevance, but what I got was more typical Eastern filmmaking that promotes style over substance; look over story.  The Blu Ray copy of Resident Evil: Damnation retails at $19.99 US dollars and I simply cannot recommend this film at that price to anyone besides serious Resident Evil fans.  If you find it on sale for $10, go for it, otherwise save that money for your pre-order of Resident Evil 6.
