DC Beats Out Marvel Comics In Comic Book Sales For July 2016

DC Comics may have finally found their niche with Rebirth, which offers fans basically what they’ve wanted from the get go: quality stories at reasonable prices.

For the first time probably since the New 52 was launched back in 2011, DC Comics comes out on top over Marvel as they take the top dollar and unit amount for the month of July.

Following the failure of the New 52, DC Comics recently was forced to take a look at how they’ve been doing business. DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio recently noted they won’t be trying to emulate the movies and realize the comic book audience will never be as big as their film universe, which frees them up to do creative-driven stories. In addition, Geoff Johns has been promoted to President Of DC Entertainment, which now sees him involved in all aspects of DC, which is contrary to Marvel’s business plan that sees their Marvel movie universe run separately from their TV and comics (and sees them butting heads).

DC Comics doesn’t look to be slowing any time soon as DiDio also let it be known that sales for one week in August match the entire month of their April sales.

Regarding Marvel Comics, you can guarantee some sort of reboot or another relaunch will be happening. I think fans are getting tired of Marvel Comics, which basically has been one gimmick after another at high prices. In addition, Marvel Comics has been replacing so many of their characters with politically correct versions that fans are just fed up. If things continue to go downhill for Marvel Comics, I also expect their will be editorial and executive changes as the past five years or so of Marvel Comics has been the worst I’ve ever seen, in my opinion.

Here are the charts and info from Diamond for July:

Diamond Announces Top Products For July 2016

(BALTIMORE, MD) — (August 12, 2016) — Alien machines threaten Earth and the Justice League reforms to defeat them in Bryan Hitch, Tony S. Daniel, and Sandu Florea’s Justice League #1 from DC Entertainment, the best-selling comic book of July 2016 according to information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors, the world’s largest distributor of comics, graphic novels, and pop culture merchandise.

Their sales powered by Rebirth, DC Entertainment was July’s top publisher with a 35.36% dollar share and a 40.96% unit share. Marvel Comics was the month’s number two publisher with a 34.20% dollar share and a 35.69% unit share. At number three was Image Comics with a 8.15% dollar share and a 7.56% unit share. IDW Publishing was fourth with a 4.49% dollar share and a 3.00% unit share, followed by Dark Horse Comics with a 2.83% dollar share and 1.98% units share.

DC Entertainment had eight of the month’s top ten best-selling comics; beyond Justice League #1, Justice League Rebirth #1 ranked #2, Batman #2 ranked #3, Batman #3 ranked #5, Nightwing Rebirth #1 ranked #6, New Super-Man #1 ranked #8, Nightwing #1 ranked #9, and Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #1 ranked #10. DC Entertainment had two titles among the top ten, led by Harley Quinn’s Greatest Hits, a collection of stories featuring the fan-favorite character, at #2. Charles Soule and Marco Checchetto’s Star Wars: Obi-Wan and Anakin was Marvel Comics’ best-selling book at #4 and one of their three titles among the top ten.

The softcover edition of Gemstone Publishing’s The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide Volume 46 was July’s best-selling book.

Good Smile’s The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D: Link Nendoroid, a recreation of the beloved Nintendo hero, was July’s best-selling toy product. Diamond Select Toys had four titles among the month’s top ten, led by Marvel Select: Carnage Action Figure at #2. Watch: Top 10 Suicide Squad Moments

With Suicide Squad out in theaters, how about the Top 10 Suicide Squad moments from the comics?

Check out the video below courtesy DC All Access.

How’s this for a task? Just in time for the release of Suicide Squad, DC All Access gathered its squad in an attempt to figure out the ten best comic book moments from the team formally known as Task Force X. Fortunately, we managed to assemble our list without anyone losing their head. (Too bad we can’t say the same for all of the characters on our list!)

“Suicide Squad” has an August 5, 2016 release date directed by David Ayer starring Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, and Scott Eastwood in an unknown role.

Synopsis:

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Supervillains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Watch: Joker Fan Film “The Laughing Man” (NSFW)

Ahead of Suicide Squad and with the release of Batman: The Killing Joke today, how about a cool Joker fan film as well?

Check out The Laughing Man below which references Scott Snyder’s “Death of the Family” Batman comic and takes place in a psychiatric facility where a new, unidentified arrival is being questioned. Viewers are taken on a tense excursion into brutal, bloody territory as the dialogue unfurls into a high-stakes role reversal.

With no fingerprints or identification, the strange man presents himself as a new patient—whom the resident psychiatrist isn’t quite sure how to assess. As the psychiatrist tries to pin down the man’s identity and motive for admitting himself to the facility, the viewers are taken on a tense excursion into brutal territory as the dialogue unfurls into a high-stakes role reversal. A study in mayhem, the Hallivis Brothers’ short takes the superhero out of the equation, instead highlighting the anti-hero whose disturbed mental states often lay the foundation of iconic comic book narratives.

With the Joker’s inclusion in the much-anticipated Suicide Squad release, the Hallivis Brothers pay homage to the villain’s character, developing a short which reimagines the Joker’s story as a character study exploring the psychopath’s damaged mind.

“With such an iconic character, we felt a big duty to flesh out just how disturbed the Joker’s mind is,” explain the Hallivis Brothers. The duo rose to the challenge by deftly combining live-action and stop-motion sequences into one perfectly disturbing package, and assembled a cast and crew that includes Zach Avery as the title character, Whitney Able (Monsters, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane) as Quinn, Beau Billingslea (Star Trek Into Darkness, Castle) as Dr Hawtin, Hugo Villasenor taking the reigns on prosthetics and makeup, and American Film Institute graduate, Eli Arenson, rounding out the team as cinematographer.

Directed by Diego Hallivis and produced by Julio Hallivis, The Laughing Man is the latest short from the talented duo who are currently wrapping up post-production for upcoming sci-fi feature, Curvature, starring Lyndsy Fonseca (Nikita, Kick-Ass, How I Met Your Mother), Linda Hamilton (Terminator), Glenn Morshower (Bloodline, Transformers, SuperGirl), and The Laughing Man lead actor, Zach Avery.

Geoff Johns Promoted To President Of DC Entertainment

Update: It’s confirmed.

It’s being said Geoff Johns has been promoted to President of DC Entertainment, though Warner Bros. has yet to make an official announcement.

Johns, known for writing for DC Comics as well as being the DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer, recently received new duties following Batman Vs. Superman.

It’s known Geoff Johns is working with WB film exec Jon Berg on the Justice League movies, so the promotion makes a lot of sense. Johns is also involved with DC TV and remains involved with DC Comics.

According to Bleeding Cool, Geoff Johns is both DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer and President, and still reports to Diane Nelson (who is also President of DC Entertainment). Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, DC Entertainment Co-Publishers, continue report to Diane Nelson as well.

It’s said the promotion happened because of the Batman Vs. Superman “fallout,” and explains the different approach the recent Justice League and Wonder Woman Comic-Con trailers took.

It’s recently become known that Geoff Johns also helped write the Wonder Woman movie script and wrote a treatment for Aquaman with director James Wan as well. Johns is also writing The Batman with Ben Affleck.

I’m sure someone will bring up the fact that Geoff Johns “executive produced” the Green Lantern flop; however, his role could have been more or less as a consultant. There’s also the fact that the writers of the Green Lantern movie, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, said not to blame themselves for the failure as their script was different than the final product. Reporters who took part in set visits even offered the storyboards they saw on the Green Lantern movie set (which looked cool) weren’t even a part of the finished movie (for whatever reason).

As I previously wrote, DC seems to be in good hands with Geoff Johns, unlike Marvel who is currently a house divided.

It’s also thought Geoff Johns is the reason why DC TV and the movies are now sharing characters played by different actors (Batman is now rumored for DC TV and Tyler Hoechlin will play Superman on Supergirl).

IDW Announces TMNT / Batman & Star Trek / Green Lantern Crossovers

IDW Publishing and DC Entertainment Announce Two New Crossovers

New Batman/TMNT Adventures and Star TrekTM/Green Lantern Crossovers Forthcoming

San Diego, CA – IDW Publishing and DC Entertainment will continue their successful editorial mash-ups and bring fans two new comic book crossovers based on some of their most popular properties, including a sequel to the smash-hit co-publishing venture Star Trek/Green Lantern and an all new crossover with animation-inspired versions of Batman and Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

“We’re very happy to extend our ongoing relationship with DC with these iconic characters in new storylines,” says Greg Goldstein, President and COO of IDW Publishing. “Fans who enjoyed the previous series will enjoy the fun, new adventures we have in store for these upcoming titles.”

Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will once again cross paths with the Green Lantern Corps in a sequel to last year’s Star Trek/Green Lantern series. The creative team of Mike Johnson and Angel Hernandez will reteam for another epic space opera, this one picking up the new status quo where it left off and introducing additional cosmic heroes and villains familiar to fans of both series. This series is slated for a winter 2016 launch.

Following the recent success of Batman/TMNT, IDW, DC, and Nickelodeon are also happy to announce another pairing between the Caped Crusader and the Ninja Turtles: Batman/TMNT Adventures, coming this November. Based on the animated versions of both series, this storyline for fans of all ages will bring the Dark Knight of the beloved Batman: The Animated Series in contact with Nickelodeon’s animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The dynamic duo of writer Matthew K. Manning (Beware the Batman) and artist Jon Sommariva (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Amazing Adventures) will team on the series.

“The previous Star Trek/Green Lantern and Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossovers were a huge hit with fans of each of the characters,” said Hank Kanalz, DC SVP of Editorial Strategy and Administration. “Bringing these characters back again, and expanding Batman and the Turtles to the realm where they’re most recognized by comic fans and fans of the TV series will make for a great story that any fan can’t wait to read.”

“It’s always a blast to pair up beloved characters in comic series, and our recent pairings with DC have been especially satisfying on a creative level and in regards to fan satisfaction, too,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer. “Being able to bring Ciro Nieli’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the amazing animated Gotham envisioned by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski is a major bonus.”

Stay tuned for more upcoming news regarding these massively popular pairings from two of today’s most premier comic book publishers.

DC Sales Skyrocket As DC Comics Goes Back To Its Roots With Rebirth

The last few years have seen both DC Comics and Marvel attempt to emulate their respective film markets, which has been a miserable failure. No longer would they be the leader inspiring ideas, but instead have become the follower.

The launch of the New 52 saw word that the movie executives were interfering with the DC Comics (specifically with Superman).

Likewise, any fan of Marvel Comics knows the once great “House of Ideas” has become a shadow of its former self. One specific example that hits home is when Marvel Comics cancelled the great Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning Marvel Cosmic titles, Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy, when they received word the movie was being green lit. DnA inspired a new billion dollar Disney franchise, but got canned for it, with Jeph Loeb and Brian Bendis reaping the rewards (nice place to work at).

Another example by Marvel is with Matt Fraction’s Thor run, as Marvel Comics caused interference by requiring mandates on Fraction when the Marvel Studios Thor movie was getting released (could also explain why Fraction left Inhumans as they appear on Agents of SHIELD).

The good news is that at least DC Comics has seen the light of day with the recent launch of their Rebirth event, which seems to have taken their publishing direction to a time prior to the New 52, and one that sees DC aiming to please the fans instead of attempting to force-feed the readers garbage they don’t want (i.e. Marvel NOW).

Sales are doing so well for Rebirth, that DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio offered up that sales for the first week of August are equivalent to their total for the entire month of April.

“When you put a number up like that, you sit and you start to giggle,” DiDio said at a recent Comic-Con presentation, reports THR. “You think, ‘Holy shit, this worked!'”

DC is also bucking the trend of subsequent issues of the comics falling in sales, as sales are increasing from second and third issues.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” DC Comics artist and co-publisher Jim Lee said.

DiDio continues with mention that sales on everything are up and further notes that lesser known books that get rave reviews are seeing sales increase.

“What we’ve seen is that, traditionally, if a book sells poorly as a periodical, it sells poorly as a trade. If it sells extraordinarily well as a periodical, it sells extraordinarily well as a trade,” he explained. “What we’ve seen is that, with the Midnighter book in particular, [which had] a lot of great press, a lot of great reviews, that’s where we’ve seen reviews really inform the sales on the graphic novel collection.”

Lee continues with mention that whenever a new movie or TV show is announced, sales for the source material go through the roof (such as Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight), but what’s interesting is that DiDio says the material based on the movies/TV doesn’t do as well.

“The interesting thing is that material that inspires media sells much better than material that is derivative of media,” DiDio said. “That’s the one thing that we see over and over. If we base a book on a movie, it will sell less than the comic or graphic novel that inspired the movie.”

The article then notes not to expect DC Comics to shell out more comics based on movies and/or TV, but take to a page from yesteryear and be the inspiration.

“That’s the key aspect of what we do in comics. We aspire others to be creative. We don’t have the numbers, the sales, to be comparative — we could be a drop in the bucket — but the source material is clearly identified as the comic books. It pushes us to be more creative — not to follow but to lead,” DiDio said.

“For everyone out there who took different action figures and teamed them up to take on the world, this one’s for you,” said co-writer Rob David, who recently wrote the storyline for the critically acclaimed He-Man: the Eternity War, published by DC Entertainment in 2015.

“Writing this crossover event is the thrill of a lifetime, and Rob and I can’t wait to get started,” added co-writer Lloyd Goldfine. “You don’t wait 30 years and not go big!”

In his eternal desire to destroy the mighty ThunderCats, the evil Mumm-Ra quests for a weapon that can rival the legendary Sword of Omens: He-Man’s Sword of Power! But his dimension-spanning scheme launches a cataclysmic crisis that will, for the first time ever, unite Lion-O, Cheetara, Tygra, Panthro, WilyKit and WilyKat with He-Man, Battlecat, Teela, Man-At-Arms and the rest of the Masters of the Universe.

“The Power of Grayskull and the Great Eye of Thundera have aligned to make me the luckiest guy on all the earths!” explained artist Freddie E. Williams II. “He-Man and ThunderCats were my life when I was in grade school—family and friends knew I loved both cartoons so much. I used to pause episodes and draw from them, since they were so awesome. The He-Man/ThunderCats crossover is the fulfillment of a lifelong goal and my fanboy dream come true! I’m having a blast!”

HE-MAN/THUNDERCATS #1 debuts October 5, 2016.
