Dan Slott Says A Black Peter Parker Spider-Man Is Possible

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19312:]]

With Spider-Man being shared by Sony and Marvel, there is question whether or not they will be using the classic version of Spidey (a white Peter Parker) or go with a version that would be black, latino, or both.

Rumors of a racially diverse Spider-Man kicked up when a reporter for the Hollywood trade site, the Wrap, stated he thinks that he’s 95% sure the new Spider-Man won’t be white.

Fans quickly reactied with mention that in the official announcement an exec for Sony mentioned they are using Peter Parker.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean a white Peter Parker.

A fan remarked the fact that Peter Parker is white to Marvel Comics writer Dan Slott, who recently stated he wouldn’t mind a Spider-man that is not white.

Dan’s response?

Dan replied back with an image of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. In the regular Marvel Comics universe, Nick Fury is white, but in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, Nick Fury is black (and in the movies).

Slott is obviously saying that anything is possible, and Peter Parker could end up black.

Slott also added along with the pic: “Story re-opened. Now sit your ass down.”

Slott continued tweeting defending the possibility of a non-white Spider-Man.

Here are some of Dan’s tweets:

Thor’s Mom’s Husband Dan Gilroy Slams Superhero Movies

While accepting the 2015 Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, director Dan Gilroy’s acceptance speech gave superhero movies a quick jab.

Gilroy finished his speech with: “Independent film, the foundation and everybody here today, I think are holdouts against a tsunami of superhero movies that have swept over this industry. We have survived and we have thrived and I think that’s true spirit.”

Gilroy received the award for his directorial debut on Nightcrawler, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal.

While Dan Gilroy calls superhero movies “a tsunami,” – meaning they destroy – we guess he doesn’t mind writing them as he wrote the screenplay for Stan Lee’s Annihilator film.

Dan Gilroy also wrote Real Steel, which arguably saw robots become superheroes, as well as The Bourne Legacy, which saw Jeremy Renner as a hero with enhanced super powers.

And who is Gilroy married to? Thor’s mom, Rene Russo, aka Frigga.

Avengers 2 Not Backing Down From Floyd Mayweather Vs. Manny Pacquiao

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19301:]]

It’s on!

Marvel Studios and The Avengers: Age Of Ultron are not backing away from what is being said to be one of the most anticipated fights in boxing history with Floyd Mayweather set to take on Manny Pacquiao on Saturday, May 2nd, which will unify the welterweight world titles at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

That Saturday will be the second biggest opening night for The Avengers 2.

Will the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight see some fans skip out on Avengers to check out the fight?

TMZ questioned Marvel about it, with Marvel replying they have no intention of backing down and changing the release date.

“Nope,” Marvel replied back.

While some fans may stay home to watch the fight, more than likely they will still see Avengers 2 – either at a different time that Saturday or simply a different night.

It’s speculated the Mayweather vs Paxquiao fight will be the biggest PPV boxing event ever, passing Mayweather’s record buys for the 2007 junior middleweight championship fight against Oscar De La Hoya, which brought in 2.4 million; passing the all-time PPV revenue record of $150 million, as well as passing the all-time gate record of $20 million.

The first Avengers movie brought in $69.557 million for its own Saturday back in 2012.

So with Floyd Mayweather Vs. Manny Pacquiao expected to bring in over $150 million for Saturday, will it hurt The Avengers 2?

“The Avengers: Age Of Ultron” hits May 1, 2015 directed by Joss Whedon starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Paul Bettany as Vision, with James Spader as Ultron.

Synopsis:

When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

Hugh Jackman Wants To Play Wolverine Forever

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19300:]]

Good news for fans of Hugh Jackman as the actor wants to keep playing Wolverine.

Following X-Men: Days Of Future Past there seemed to be question whether or not Jackman would be returning to play Logan; however, things seemed to be smoothed out as Hugh Jackman is said to be appearing in next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse and the sequel to The Wolverine in 2017.

Now while speaking with EOnline, Jackman goes so far as to say he never wants to stop being Wolverine.

“I said to my wife, ‘The moral is that I should never stop playing Wolverine,” Jackman said. ‘I’ve got to find a way to keep playing him until I die.’ I know that someday they’ll recast the role with another actor… I’d be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic.”

Jackman even goes on to state that the next time he will play Wolverine, he wants to be in better shape both physically and emotionally.

“I always want to be in better shape than I was for the last one,” Jackman said. “I don’t believe in stagnation. People say they try to maintain the status quo. But I believe the natural cycle means you’re either advancing and getting closer to something or you’re receding…Every time I play Wolverine I want to go further, physically and emotionally.”

Hugh Jackman next’s movie hits March 6th with Chappie, and Jackman is starring in Pan as Blackbeard, which is out July 24th.

Review: Birdman (2014)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19297:]]

The Perpetual Pissing Contest between Cinema and Stage

[Continuing Our 2015 Academy Award Roundup

A Film Review of Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

Writer, director, producer, Alejandro González Iñárritu has taken it upon himself to make some social commentary regarding the entertainment industry as it pertains to the acting slice of the pie and oh my, he’s got some interesting observations to make.  For anyone who has been on the ground floor regarding this current renaissance of comic book blockbuster adaptations, for those who are down with the theater (Broadway or otherwise), for those who follow the entertainment industry and for anyone with even a modest interest in the status of “celebrity,” Birdman has got the goods for an eye-opening adventure.  Fans of both the cinema and stage will have layers upon layers of subtext and context to smile, weep and chuckle upon as the story unveils before our eyes.  Birdman is a film undeserving of its own mundane title for it easily suggests a limited scope to the vision of its production.  I assure you all that viewers who side with big money glam and those that prefer small indie art can build a bridge with a film like this.  It is easily one of this past year’s best in every conceivable aspect of the filmmaking process and as of right now has surpassed American Sniper as my favorite to win best picture this year.

Birdman’s story follows former blockbuster superhero actor Riggan Thomson and his attempt to get back into the biz by way of his own, single-handed financing, directing and starring in a stage adaptation Raymond Carver’s What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.  However, the audience is taken on a much more surreal journey into Riggan’s mind, ego and distorted sense of self worth as the telekinetic powers of his former “Birdman” persona appear to be playing havoc with the production.  What’s most entertaining about this film is the seamless integration of all the action and drama of every scene thanks to a virtual non-existence of cuts.  Everything is happening here and now and in this very instant.  This film’s composition (cinematography, lighting and setting) establishes an intimate, mise en scène reality upon reality; perspective upon perspective; viewer’s physical placement within the film’s frame of what is actually happening during the setup, rehearsal and debut of this Broadway show.  Riggan’s supernaturalism collides with his costars’ personal agendas which reflect the harsh realities of the acting profession and is all consumed by our society which commands infinitely more power than we, ourselves realize in our ability to interact “socially” via the internet.  While all this is happening, the audience is also getting an introductory course on the unspoken animosity between stage and screen actors, the nature of prima donnas, the influence of critics, the difficulties of production, and the personal toll of the less disciplined who choose to get into this profession in the first place.

Despite the very interesting use of special effects as well as the placement of these moments during the film, Birdman is primarily a dialogue, driven drama and must therefore have a cast willing to lift that kind of load.  Just about every character in this film is either a struggling actor or producer, yet ironically, this entire cast has first-hand experience in mega budget production films: Michael Keaton (Batman 1989), Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man 2012), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover Trilogy ’09-’13), Naomi Watts (King Kong 2005), Andrea Riseborough (Oblivion 2013) and Edward Norton (The Incredible Hulk 2008).  Please note the number of comic book blockbuster adaptations on this list.  The names of this cast, independent of its fine performance, is a comedic slap in the face to stage actors due to the roles they fill in Birdman and the fact that despite differences in performances, preparation and processes between stage and screen acting, they are more similar than either side would ever admit.  Thus, this production is heavily sided with the cinema, and that’s perfectly all right seeing how it is far more interested in deconstructing Hollywood than Broadway.  This is further evidenced by the heavy use of steadi-cam shots to deliver screen perspectives that piggy back Michael Keaton as he walks through the St. James theater and park right in front of Emma Stone’s face when she’s going on about how old and irrelevant her father is.  This intimate proximity is an experience the theater can never produce, and it is a style that film actors are comfortable with which aids in the delivery of exceptional individual performances for the cast of Birdman.

Selecting Ed Norton to play the antagonizing golden child of the stage, Mike, was just about the biggest no brainer this side of casting Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man.  Norton is a fine actor that brings an experienced touch to a character type that today’s pop culture may or may not have confused for his personality in real life.  The fact that his character has specific issues reconciling his stage and true life behavior is equally unsurprising, yet quite satisfying.  Playing an actor that doesn’t “play” well with others in a production is yet another ironic link to the fact that he was removed from the potential cast of The Avengers as continuing the role of Bruce Banner/Hulk for true reasons that you and I will probably never know.  Mike isn’t a character completely devoid of sympathy as he tries to make sincere observations of life to the naive Sam, which is somewhat invalidated by his sexual interest in her.  Mike’s sole concern is the artistic integrity of the stage which may be a front to protect the adoration and ego boost he receives from the theatrical community by being the maverick he’s come to relish.

Zach Galifianakis as Jake the producer does not fill this film’s role as the solitary generator of comedic energy, but he does a fantastic job at doing so.  As with Norton’s prima donna, Jake is somewhat of a stereotypical producer whose undefined responsibilities and uniformed status presents a member of the production team that clearly has authority, but is also disconnected from the visceral evolution of the production at hand.  Representing the money invested and potential profits made or lost by reviews will never present the most sympathetic character for an audience, but it is Zach’s comedic timing and facial expressions that soften the blow.  Jake is an easier character to identify with because most of us aren’t experienced in artistic production, so it’s easy to be completely confused by actors when they are knee deep in their “process.”

Emma Stone plays Sam Thomson, Riggan’s daughter and yet again stereotypes are hard at work in presenting a character the audience has seen before in real life.  Being the daughter of a blockbuster actor may have yielded minimal bonding with dad, but plenty of cash to get into fun and trouble with; so much so, that it lands her in rehab.  Where oh where have we ever heard of such tragedy that has befallen the sons and daughters of celebrities whose only real challenge in life is living under mommy or daddy’s shadow?  Sam is a troubled girl in search of guidance and Emma’s ability to pierce the frame with her giant eyes signify moments to the audience when her character is being sincere as opposed to just mailing it in with a middle finger.

Unsung heroine Amy Ryan as Riggan’s ex wife Sylvia easily delivers the most dramatic performance by a supporting cast member in this film.  Representing the one character that is completely removed from the acting/entertainment profession, her interests are simple: the welfare of her daughter as well as her flaky ex-husband.  She relates to the rest of us “normies” best because it might seem like no big deal for a former hot shot actor to refinance a home to pay for a pet project, but that’s a big time red flag for people who worry about paying for food, rent, utilities, etc.  Sylvia seems like a character with almost saintly levels of patience as she is desperate to anchor Riggan to reality, despite his emotional issues.  What I like best about Amy’s performance is the fresh perspective she gives to this “theater scene” with her kind demeanor and practical attitude.

Michael Keaton may not be the only man alive that could have pulled off this part, but he certainly did so phenomenally in Birdman.  So let’s quickly examine some past Batmen just for comparative giggles.  Adam West is too old and too successful at being a current spoof of his former self.  Val Kilmer is certainly removed enough from the current film scene to develop the irrelevant angle, but would require some significant P-90x to get back into “washed-up” physical shape.  George Clooney is bigger than any possible role cast in an indie or indie-esque film at this point in his life; so he’s out.  Christian Bale has more than enough acting chops for the indie scene, but the content of this film would perhaps be a bit too harsh for the sensitivities of his past work, especially when being critical of acting and actors is the order of the day.  What makes Michael Keaton an ideal choice for Riggan Thomson, formerly “Birdman,” is NOT any conceivable personal baggage he may or may not be dragging into it, but his entire filmography and in particularly the range of his past work.  Keaton has done action, comedy and drama and his work has been solid (please forget Multiplicity) and it takes that kind of balance to be able to approach this burnt out, actor role in a manner that almost crosses the shameless threshold.  He fires up enough anger for his fight with Ed Norton, he plays back every funny beat he picks up on and he can stare down others as well as himself when his character is most vulnerable, pathetic and empowered.

Birdmanis an entertaining cinematic adventure, layered with meaning, filled with great performances and most importantly, is self-reflecting of Hollywood (and Hollywood loves that).  Politics always play a role in the Academy process and until the entire system of lobbying or campaigning for films to be recognized in this way is removed or the consuming public gets more transparency regarding the voting process (reveal the counts in every category), politics will be as influential as the base quality of the product.  Michael Keaton has one heck of an acting legacy and adding an Academy Award to his accolades would be a hell of a thing, but best actor is still going to Eddie RedmayneBirdman is my pick for best film not because I enjoy blockbusters or comic book adaptations, but because it’s just that damn good and that damn fun!

Joss Whedon Talks Ultron Powers; Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver Origins

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19291:]]

We are almost two months away from the premiere of The Avengers 2, which will introduce Ultron as the villain in addition to new Marvel super heroes, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

Now while speaking with Empire, Joss Whedon offers the following.

On Ultron’s powers:

“The powers in comic books – they’re always like, ‘And then I can reverse the polarity of your ions!’ – well, we have to ground things a lot more. With Ultron, we have to make him slightly less omnipotent because he’d win. Bottom line. Also, having weaknesses and needs and foibles and alliances and actually caring what people think of him, all these things, are what make him a character and not just a tidal wave. A movie about a tidal wave can be great, but it’s different than a conflict between one side and the other.

When Ultron speaks, he has a point. He is really not on top of the fact that the point he’s making has nothing to do with the fact that he’s banoonoos. And that he hates the Avengers for bringing him into this world, and he can’t really articulate that or even understand how much he hates humanity. He thinks he’s all that. That guy is very fun to write. He combines all the iconic stuff. The powers he has are slightly different – he can control certain things, he’s not just firing repulsors.”

On Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s origins:

“They have an origin but it’s largely described. They’re already good to go by the time we’re up and running. You don’t want to fall into Spider-Man 3 territory – and I say that as a guy who actually thinks pretty well of that movie, there’s some great stuff in that movie – but there comes a point where you’re overloaded with frontstory, backstory, origin story and it becomes very hard to juggle. My instinct is always, ‘Don’t put in more, work with what you have.’

But I insisted on putting in more in this movie because I felt I needed more villains. I needed someone for Ultron to talk to, and I need more trouble for the Avengers. As powerful as Ultron is, if he builds more Ultrons, they’re Ultrons. There’s no reason for him to ever to talk to them because they’re him. ‘I need you to – I KNOW! I AM TOTALLY YOU! I DID IT EARLIER! I know that because I am also me.’ That’s not a good conversation. Actually, it sounded pretty good there. I think I’m onto something.”

New Spider-Man Rumored To Be Black

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19288:]]

With Sony and Marvel coming to a deal for Spider-Man, the question is whether the new Spider-Man will be Peter Parker or possibly a different version.

Now a reporter for the Hollywood trade site, The Wrap, is stating the new Spider-Man will be black or possibly Latino.

“This is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now: Spider-Man is not going to be white,” Jeff Sneider said on a podcast. “Spider-Man is not going to be white. I am 95% sure. Spider-Man is going to be most likely black. But there is a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure not white. I don’t think it’s going to be Peter ParkerSony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with sort of a major black comic book character. Like I said last week, the e-mails that leaked were perceived to be racist in some quarters. I really think that is going to play into things.”

Marvel Comics does have a black Spider-Man with Miles Morales, which is a part of their Ultimate Universe (and what the movies seem to be more based on). Miles is of Puerto Rican and African American descent.

It’s thought the new Spider-Man will first appear in Captain America: Civil War, which is out May 2016, and a standalone Spider-Man film is schedulef for July 28, 2017.

Batman Vs. Superman Trailer Attached To Focus?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19281:]]

Tonight saw Zack Snyder tweet the official first look image of Jason Momoa as Aquaman.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the first trailer for Batman Vs. Superman. Is it possible the trailer will be released next Friday with Focus?

Focus stars Suicide Squad‘s Will Smith and Margot Robbie, plus Focus is put out by WB.

It’s also been speculated the Batman Vs. Superman trailer might be attached to the new Mad Max movie; however, Mad Max: Fury Road doesn’t come out until May 15th.

The Focus release date is just a month and a year away from Batman Vs. Superman, and most studios like to reveal a teaser a year prior.

If the Batman Vs. Superman trailer is attached to Focus, it will be online some time next week.

We’re crossing our fingers.

Focus opens Friday, February 27th.

Dan Slott Talks Spider-Man In Marvel Movies

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19277:]]

Writer Dan Slott is fast becoming known as the go-to guy for Spider-Man in the Marvel Comics universe having first written Spidey in an issue of Ren and Stimpy back in 1992 and most recently with the well-received Spider-Verse storyline.

As Marvel and Sony recently announced a joint venture for Spider-Man movies, who else is there better to go to regarding the cinematic version of Spider-Man than Dan Slott?

The Verge caught up with Dan Slott and asked which storyline would he like to see featured, with Dan recommending “Kraven’s Last Hunt” by J.M. DeMatteis. It should also probably be noted that former WB president Jeff Robinov, who is now at Sony, also recommended the Kraven storyline.

As a fan? If I had to discount anything that I’ve written — me and my gigantic ego — I would say the J.M. DeMatteis story “Kraven’s Last Hunt.” I would love for a screenwriter to mine that material.

This is something that comics fans get upset about when a movie is being made before they get a chance to see it. You have to change things for the movie. There are things that work in a comic, and then there are things that you can only do in a movie. But I think if someone, as a starting point, took “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” which is one of the greatest Spider-Man stories ever told, I think you could have a phenomenal movie.

Dan goes on to mention other possibilities for Spider-Man on the big screen as well.

And there are so many characters who haven’t had their chance yet. I think Mysterio would be one of the greatest movie villains. The guy’s powers are special effects. That means you could do anything you’ve ever seen in a movie in a Spider-Man. Anything. Blow up the White House. 10,000 aliens descending from space. Ghosts coming out of walls. Whatever you want! Matrix bullet time. I don’t care. Eye-popping, blow-the-back-of-your-head-out special effects. It gives you free rein. There are just so many characters we haven’t seen that are ripe to be the main character in a Spider-Man movie.

Slott also comments on the potential for Spider-Man to be of any race (there is Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales who is of Puerto Rican and African American descent):

…one of the things I’d be interested in seeing is, I hope they make the casting open for everyone. There’s nothing inherently white about Peter Parker. Peter Parker is a nerdy outcast. Anybody, from any walk of life, can be a nerdy outcast. One of the reasons why Spider-Man speaks to everyone around the world is that mask. I’ve met so many young Spider-Man fans over the years. People that grew up and are now old, but when they first met Spider-Man, they kind of didn’t know who was under that mask. And that gives him the freedom to be anyone. That gives him the freedom to be someone just like you. It’d be really nice to see that as a possibility. Even if they end up casting someone who, at the end of the day, looks just like Peter Parker. It would be nice if the door was open and they just [said] , “Spider-Man can be anybody.”

Spider-Man will first be featured in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016 before getting a new Spider-Man movie on July 28, 2017.

Mark Ruffalo Talks Hulk In The Avengers 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19253:]]

Yesterday saw Robert Downey Jr. talk about Iron Man 4 and Captain America 3 and the Vision, now Empire catches up with Mark Ruffalo about the Hulk.

Ruffalo offers up where Bruce Banner is at when Avengers 2 begins:

I think he’s definitely matured a little bit since the last one. He’s become more acclimated to this thing and to being part of the team. I think he feels more a part of them all.

And on Hulk and Banner in Avengers 2:

Hulk is the kind of wild card. He’s the loose cannon of the group. He’s more like an atom bomb. You could guess where he’s going to go but he could go either way.

There’s a battle going on between these two opposing egos that live inside him. He’s definitely worried that the day is going to come when the Hulk gets the best of him, and maybe won’t release him, maybe won’t give him back. The Hulk knows this too. There’s a moment in here where he, begrudgingly, decides to go back to Banner. Who knows where these things will go, but as Bruce is able to impress his will on the Hulk, going into The Hulk and being inside the Hulk when he’s raging, The Hulk’s will is also growing and able to impress upon Bruce. That makes for some wild things. We’re laying the groundwork for that here. It’ll be interesting to see if that ends up being what would be the next Hulk movie.

About a potential Hulk movie:

Who knows, really? That’s such an amorphous thing. Nobody has talked to me about that yet. It seems people want it, but it’s tough. They’ve already done two of ‘em, and they’ve only done two Thors, they had a nice run on Iron Man. I feel like they have their plates full. There’s probably other people they’re keen on doing but I think people have shown that they’re ready to see another one.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19254:]]
