Spider-Man Again Said To Be Non-White

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19337:]]

A couple of days ago saw it mentioned that Sony and Marvel’s new Spider-Man may be black or latino.

Now the source of the rumor is back at it stating while Sony is testing white actors for the role of Spider-Man, it’s thought Sony is wanting to cast a non-white actor.

The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider took to his Twitter to offer that: “White actors are still going out for Spider-Man but their reps are telling me they think Sony is leaning ‘ethnic.'”

There has been debate online as well regarding a black Peter Parker, with Marvel Comics writer Dan Slott adding his two cents on Twitter to the argument for a possible non-white Spider-Man.

Dan seems to think that the color of Peter Parker/Spider-Man is a non-factor and uses Luke Cage and Black Panther as examples of race being an integral component to the character. With that thought, Dan says that anybody can then have a chance to be Spidey.

It’s speculated that Sony needs to pick the actor soon as Spider-Man is said to first appear in Captain America: Civil War. Of course, it’s always possible Spidey could cameo in costume, and we could then see the Peter Parker actor in the Sony July 2017 Spider-Man movie.

Review: NINO #27

Why doesn’t Marvel just re-name this book Pseudo-Spider-Man Redux or Pseudo-Spider-Man Lite?  Drop NINO, change a couple of supporting characters, substitute a teenage Spidey, and this story would read the same.

Seriously, this tussle with Carnage is the most blatant copycat of a Spidey story yet.  This isn’t Cosmic in any way, shape, or form.  It’s just teen Spider-Man re-told for the umpteenth time.  I realize that that’s the point of this failed experiment – to try to capture Spider-Magic once again.  It’s just a shame that a true Cosmic book with a true, mature, Cosmic hero was replaced by this hackneyed, puerile, juvenile-mentality-oriented nonsense that really belongs in an “all-ages” Spidey book.

I lost interest in Spider-Man in the early 1990’s and have never re-gained a real interest in the character or his rogue’s gallery of villains.   I can’t say I have any particular feelings for the Carnage character – but I like him better than NINO, so I was rooting for him.  Predictably, unfortunately, and un-realistically he fails in his attempt to kill NINO.  Too bad.  I’d like to see NINO 6-feet-under where he belongs.  The story is just a prolonged and predictable fight with a symbiote, pulling out all the predictable moves and tactics for fighting a symbiote.  And it even ends with a predictable Spider-Mannish dropping of the defeated and wrapped-up villain off at Riker’s Island.  Seen that story before?  Yeah, me too.  Yawn.

Since Marvel insists on keeping this book on life support for some as yet unknown reason, they at least need to stop calling it Cosmic.  Cosmic is incidental at best in this book and always has been.  Loeb just lazily usurped the look, powers, and concepts of a better-conceived true Cosmic hero – watered them down for juvenile consumption, and gave them to a Parker-ish teen screw-up.  How many times have you seen that formula?  Too many?  Yeah, me too.

Duggan has ignored the Cosmic elements for the most part, vainly trying to appeal to a non-existent demographic of pre-teen Spider-Fans.  Just as well.  Duggan is clearly not a Cosmic writer or fan – and his forays into Cosmic have been deplorably bad.  He just needs to stick to copy-catting old Spidey stories and finish driving this book well into the teens in sales so Marvel has no choice but to cancel it.  Never fear, though, NINO-zombies – because Duggan won’t take that sound advice and instead has a NINO-ette coming down the pike for you in a totally un-necessary (and doubtlessly frightfully bad) redux of Infinity Gauntlet.  Yeah, since NINO isn’t working, the thing to do is double-down on the failed concept and validate the previously un-true comparisons with GL by creating a Red NINO-ette.  Tell me Duggan, do you have any original ideas?  First you copy-cat original Spidey.  Now you’re going to try to copy-cat Starlin and GL?  And do a Miles Morales treatment of NINO in the process?  I swear, it’s almost funny that Marvel just keeps making bad things worse.

This issue’s cover art is particularly bad.  I’ve always deplored the Manga-fying of the Nova uniform to make NINO, and this cover looks like an image from a cheap video game magnifying all the Kamen Riders and Mega-Man meets Power Rangers rip-offs that are part and parcel of the NINO uniform.  The interior art ranges from sub-average to average at best.  Curiel does a fine job with the colors, but he admittedly has little with which to work and his talents would be better spent on a better book.

If you’re a true Cosmic fan, vote with your dollars and leave this title on the shelf.  Boycott Duggan’s upcoming IG redux, too.  And especially boycott this Black Vortex trash with its hackneyed “absolute power corrupts absolutely” simplistic message that could have been told in one issue and isn’t deserving of an “event.”  Seriously, compare this current fare to Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest, War of Kings, Realm of Kings, Nova Volume IV, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume II, and Guardians 3000 – books that actually respected the Cosmic concepts and the fans of the Cosmic conceptsThe current “lowest-common-denominator of comics buyer fare” (i.e.  NINO, GotGINO, LSLINO, RRINO) will come up sorely lacking every time.  It’s time we sent Marvel a message that their current “turn Cosmic into a juvenile farce to appeal to the lowest-common-denominator of comic buyer” strategy is a failure.

New Spider-Man Rumored To Be Black

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19288:]]

With Sony and Marvel coming to a deal for Spider-Man, the question is whether the new Spider-Man will be Peter Parker or possibly a different version.

Now a reporter for the Hollywood trade site, The Wrap, is stating the new Spider-Man will be black or possibly Latino.

“This is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now: Spider-Man is not going to be white,” Jeff Sneider said on a podcast. “Spider-Man is not going to be white. I am 95% sure. Spider-Man is going to be most likely black. But there is a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure not white. I don’t think it’s going to be Peter ParkerSony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with sort of a major black comic book character. Like I said last week, the e-mails that leaked were perceived to be racist in some quarters. I really think that is going to play into things.”

Marvel Comics does have a black Spider-Man with Miles Morales, which is a part of their Ultimate Universe (and what the movies seem to be more based on). Miles is of Puerto Rican and African American descent.

It’s thought the new Spider-Man will first appear in Captain America: Civil War, which is out May 2016, and a standalone Spider-Man film is schedulef for July 28, 2017.

Dan Slott Talks Spider-Man In Marvel Movies

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19277:]]

Writer Dan Slott is fast becoming known as the go-to guy for Spider-Man in the Marvel Comics universe having first written Spidey in an issue of Ren and Stimpy back in 1992 and most recently with the well-received Spider-Verse storyline.

As Marvel and Sony recently announced a joint venture for Spider-Man movies, who else is there better to go to regarding the cinematic version of Spider-Man than Dan Slott?

The Verge caught up with Dan Slott and asked which storyline would he like to see featured, with Dan recommending “Kraven’s Last Hunt” by J.M. DeMatteis. It should also probably be noted that former WB president Jeff Robinov, who is now at Sony, also recommended the Kraven storyline.

As a fan? If I had to discount anything that I’ve written — me and my gigantic ego — I would say the J.M. DeMatteis story “Kraven’s Last Hunt.” I would love for a screenwriter to mine that material.

This is something that comics fans get upset about when a movie is being made before they get a chance to see it. You have to change things for the movie. There are things that work in a comic, and then there are things that you can only do in a movie. But I think if someone, as a starting point, took “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” which is one of the greatest Spider-Man stories ever told, I think you could have a phenomenal movie.

Dan goes on to mention other possibilities for Spider-Man on the big screen as well.

And there are so many characters who haven’t had their chance yet. I think Mysterio would be one of the greatest movie villains. The guy’s powers are special effects. That means you could do anything you’ve ever seen in a movie in a Spider-Man. Anything. Blow up the White House. 10,000 aliens descending from space. Ghosts coming out of walls. Whatever you want! Matrix bullet time. I don’t care. Eye-popping, blow-the-back-of-your-head-out special effects. It gives you free rein. There are just so many characters we haven’t seen that are ripe to be the main character in a Spider-Man movie.

Slott also comments on the potential for Spider-Man to be of any race (there is Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales who is of Puerto Rican and African American descent):

…one of the things I’d be interested in seeing is, I hope they make the casting open for everyone. There’s nothing inherently white about Peter Parker. Peter Parker is a nerdy outcast. Anybody, from any walk of life, can be a nerdy outcast. One of the reasons why Spider-Man speaks to everyone around the world is that mask. I’ve met so many young Spider-Man fans over the years. People that grew up and are now old, but when they first met Spider-Man, they kind of didn’t know who was under that mask. And that gives him the freedom to be anyone. That gives him the freedom to be someone just like you. It’d be really nice to see that as a possibility. Even if they end up casting someone who, at the end of the day, looks just like Peter Parker. It would be nice if the door was open and they just [said] , “Spider-Man can be anybody.”

Spider-Man will first be featured in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016 before getting a new Spider-Man movie on July 28, 2017.

NINO Selling Under 20K: Bring Back Richard Rider As Nova

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19237:]]

NINO is now selling under the Marvel cancellation threshold (at least what used to be) as January’s issue #26 sold only 19,639 copies.

That number is, again, less than the Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s 2007 Richard Rider Nova series, which sold 28,096 with the same issue back in June 2009.

Bear in mind, Marvel Editorial never gave DnA’s Nova (or Guardians of the Galaxy) any promotion or attention. And get this: When the Guardians of the Galaxy movie became known, Marvel editorial actually cancelled all of DnA’s cosmic stuff and sent them packing.

Both James Gunn and Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige have stated in interviews that Abnett and Lanning’s Guardians is the inspiration for the almost-billion dollar Marvel movie, and Gunn even had them visit the set and got them back on the movie tie-in comics.

Meanwhile, Dan Buckley, David Gabriel, Joe Quesada, Axel Alonso, Tom Brevoort, Jeph Loeb, Stephen Wacker and Brian Michael Bendis (IMO) put the screws to DnA and took over their stuff.

I’ve said it again, but it’s worth repeating: Marvel Comics must be such a nice company to work for – and what a great boss Alonso must be – when you get fired for inspiring billion dollar Marvel movies.

Getting back to NINO, there is speculation amongst fans that Marvel was attempting to create another Spider-Man as Marvel Studios didn’t hold any of the rights to the character. It’s suggested Marvel was trying to repeat Spider-Man’s success with NINO, which obviously didn’t happen. Now that Marvel Studios does have Spider-Man in part back, can we now end the failed experiment that is NINO?

With NINO now selling less than 20k, isn’t it time to bring back Richard Rider?

From a fan perspective, it’s obvious Richard Rider is the choice of Nova.

I would also say from a business perspective, the right choice would be to go with Richard Rider. It’s already known the Richard Rider Infinite action figure outsold all the Guardians of the Galaxy movie characters – and Nova wasn’t in the movie. Rider is the fan’s choice to be Nova in the Marvel Heroes 2015 video game, and now at Toy Fair, a new Richard Rider Nova action figure was just revealed.

Just think if DnA’s Nova – that outsold NINO – had received half the attention that NINO did.

NINO was featured in Marvel Infinite Comics, Avengers issues and tie-ins, big Marvel events, not to mention the Disney Ultimate Spider-Man series.

Nova didn’t receive any of that and still sold better.

Let’s bring back Richard Rider as Nova, Marvel.

Looks Like We Have A New Richard Rider Nova Toy

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19236:]]

Coming out of the Toy Fair, it looks as if we have a new Richard Rider Nova toy.

Hasbro revealed their Marvel Super Hero Mashers and Titans figures where we see a Nova, which looks a lot like Nova Prime Richard Rider.

Though Marvel Comics cancelled the Richard Rider Nova comic book because of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, the Richard Rider Nova action figure that was a part of the Marvel Infinite movie line actually sold the best (even better than Rocket Raccoon and Iron Man). Likewise, fans chose Richard Rider to be the Nova of choice for the Marvel Heroes 2015 video game.

Now in what looks to be a no-brainer, new Richard Rider Nova action figures look to be coming out.

Marvel Comics replaced Richard Rider with a Spider-Man-ish character that fans call NINO aka Nova In Name Only. Sales on NINO quickly fell below the Richard Rider run, and Jeph Loeb, who was responsible for replacing the true Nova, was off the book by issue five.

Review: Guardians of the Galaxy #24 (Bendys)

Yeah, I know this is a crossover book in an event – but to me it’s just more of Bendis focusing on the characters he really wants to write, Avengers and X-Men, and continuing to write the Guardians as guest-stars in their own book.

Poor DraxBendis just can’t get his characterization right.  In this issue, he’s raves about the vortex being a “tool of the devil” as if he’s one of the psychotic people you see living on the streets of any large city.  Does that sound like Starlin’s Drax?  Or Giffen’s/DnA’s Drax?  Or even the imitation of Gunn’s Drax that Bendys is apparently shooting for, but like a bad marksman, just keeps missing?  Nope.  This is definitely Bendys’ Drax – no defined personality and just around to make random stupid comments and to occasionally punch something.

Did anyone else find the “lover’s quarrel” between Starlord and Kitty just flat out annoying?  Again, something out of a bad sitcom where the guy wants to do something stupid and the oh-so-much-wiser girl tries to talk him out of it but he does it anyway and, of course, he’s wrong.  Seen that anywhere before?  How many times?  And Bendis zombies criticize me for calling Bendis’ writing hackneyed.

I will say that I liked Gamora’s upgrade – but only because it restored her to the bad-girl/bad-ass characterization of Giffen/Dna along with a version of her sexy Annihilation-era costume.  The rest of the upgrades were real yawners.  And horror-of-horrors, NINO makes an appearance at the end and gets upgraded into – you guessed it – and even more manga-ish uniform!  Seriously, let’s just make the little idiot the Power Ranger that he is and sweep him into the dustbin of comicdom where he belongs.

It’s fitting that G3K and GotGINO were released in the same week so we could perform a direct compare-and-contrast between the two books bearing the Guardians name.   G3K remains an awesome read that treats the Cosmic concepts, characters, and fans with seriousness and respectGotGINO continues to be a parody of Cosmic.  To make a cinematic comparison, G3K is to GotGINO, as 2001: A Space Odyssey is to Spaceballs.  Sorry, Mel Brooks fans, I don’t mean that as a compliment.

I’m not a big fan of Schiti’s art in general, but I will say it was a fine grade of average this time out.  Keith’s colors were quite well done.

In sum, with Bendys at the helm, GotGINO remains a waste of color glossy paper.  If you’re a true Cosmic fan, the best thing you could do is leave this on the shelf along with NINO, LSLINO, and RRINO –  and instead buy multiple copies of G3K.   In other words, use your money to support true Cosmic – and leave the parodies of cosmic to die deaths of cash starvation.

Watch: Spider-Man Avengers Teaser (fan-made)

Marvel recently announced the new Spider-Man will be a part of their movie universe before getting a new standalone movie.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is onboard the Spider-Man movie as producer along with former Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal.

It’s been reported Spider-Man will first appear in Captain America: Civil War, with it also said Marvel and Sony are seeking a new actor for Spider-Man who will have his roots set in high school.

Director Marc Webb is said to be out, and Amazing Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are said to have no creative influence or control.

Rumored to play Spider-Man is either Dylan O’Brien or Logan Lerman, with the possibility mentioned Sony could decide to use the Miles Morales Spider-Man as well.

As a result of the new Spider-Man movie, Marvel also bumped four of their release dates up for Thor 3, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Inhumans.

Sony and Marvel have given Spider-Man the Thor 3 release date of July 28, 2017; Captain America: Civil War gets released May 6, 2016.

Aside from the official announcement, both Sony and Marvel have yet to comment on plot, casting or Spider-Man movie appearances.

Dylan O’Brien & Logan Lerman Eyed For New Spider-Man

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19145:]]

With Sony and Marvel casting a new Spider-Man, now it’s said Dylan O’Brien and Logan Lerman are eyed for the role.

Variety reports Sony has yet to approach any actors, but O’Brien and Lerman are among the list of actors that would play the new Spider-Man in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War and the standalone Sony film.

It’s also said Sony needs to decide if they will even go with the classic Spider-Man and Peter Parker version or decide to go with the Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales, whose parents are African American and Puerto Rican.

According to the report, Sony is also seeking a new director, as Marc Webb is out, before finding the new Spider-Man.

Further information about the new Spider-Man again mentions Spider-Man set in Midtown High School, with it said to “spend more time in the setting and explore his awkward relationship with other students while fighting crime out of the classroom. Midtown is a major setting in the comicbooks, and Peter Parker also returns to the school to become a science teacher in storylines.”

Dylan O’Brien, known for Maze Runner and Teen Wolf, did state he would be interested in playing Spider-Man in an older interview: “…kinda nerdy dude in high school, then he gets to be a superhero running around new york city, doing spider webs and stuff… that’s basically my entire dream as a human being.. i like wanna be Peter Parker.”

Likewise, Logan Lerman, known for Fury and Percy Jackson, was up for Spider-Man prior to Andrew Garfield getting the role: “There have been a few discussions, it’s definitely something I’m looking into. It’s [Spider-man] one of my favorite characters ever and I’m a huge fan of the series. I’d love to have more conversations about it. I’m definitely very interested in it.”

Both O’Brien and Lerman were on our Five Potential Actors For The New Spider-Man list.

Captain America: Civil War has a May 6, 2016 release date; the new Spider-Man is set for July 28, 2017.

Kevin Feige Not Involved With Spider-Man Spinoffs: New Spidey In High School

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19126:]]

Last night saw the news of Spider-Man being a part of the Marvel movie universe with the news Spidey set to appear first in a Marvel Studios movie followed by a Sony solo film.

The news also made mention that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige would be onboard the new Spider-Man as a producer.

Now details regarding the Sony and Marvel deal have apparently come to light as Variety offers the following details:

It’s actually said to be a “free” deal as Marvel Studios won’t have to pay Sony for the use of Spider-Man in Captain America 3, an Avengers movie or any other film.

It’s also reported Marvel won’t be receiving a cut of the box office from Sony’s Spider-Man movies, and  also that Sony will not be getting anything for the Marvel movies.

It is said Marvel may benefit from the Sony Spider-Man films if the new Spider-Man movies hit certain box office milestones, with that deal being likened to more of a producer structure.

How the deal benefits both sides is that Spider-Man gives both Sony and Marvel a way to generate more exposure for their properties as Spider-Man is one of the biggest household superhero names.

The report also states that Spider-Man will be recast, and they are looking for a younger actor to play the role as Spider-Man will have his roots set in high school.

It’s further said that Kevin Feige will not be involved with the planned Spider-Man spinoffs, Sinister Six, Venom, and the female-centric Spider-Man spinoff, which are still on the table.

Captain America: Civil War has a May 6, 2016 release; the new Spider-Man movie is set for July 28, 2017.

Hugh Jackman Weighs In On Wolverine and Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19121:]]

Last night saw Marvel announce Spider-Man will be a part of the MCU Universe first appearing in a Marvel Studios film before getting a new solo movie.

Now Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine for FOX, weighs in on Logan potentially joining the Marvel movie universe (via Geek.com).

There’s so many forces at play there, man, beyond what anyone would want. The thing I’ve always loved about the comic-book world is how the fun thing was how a writer of a comic book could just pull all these characters together and what became a Friday-night discussion of ‘it would be cool to see Batman fight Wolverine’ and bang, Monday morning they’re working on it, you know. But that’s an idealized world.

As Jackman seemingly says, any chance of Wolverine being a part of some big Marvel crossover obviously wouldn’t be up to him, but the “many forces at play,” – meaning the corporate executives.

Previous comments made by Jackman included he wanted to kick Robert Downey Jr.’s ass on the big screen; he said he wanted to join the Avengers and battle the Hulk, and also was optimistic about there being a shared movie universe.

Hugh Jackman is thought to be featured as Wolverine in X-Men: Apocalypse and in a sequel to The Wolverine which might see Logan teaming up with Patrick Stewart and Professor X.

Jackman will also be featured in Chappie on March 6th.

Update: Watch Hugh Jackman’s reaction to hearing the news about Spider-Man for the first time.

The news should come as no surprise to fans of the Marvel comics as Spider-Man was a major character in the “Civil War” comic book storyline.

Leaked Sony e-mails also revealed that Marvel wanted Spider-Man for Captain America 3.

Regarding Sinister Six, it’s also stated that Sony is delaying its planned release, which was for November of 2016 for next year, in the wake of the Spider-Man Marvel deal.

Captain America: Civil War has a May 6, 2016 release.

The new Spider-Man movie will be released July 28, 2017.

J.K. Simmons Wants To Return To Spider-Man

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19107:]]

With Marvel recently announcing a new Spider-Man, cast announcements will eventually be forthcoming.

While it appears as if the Sony/Marvel deal will reboot Spider-Man, actor J.K. Simmons says he wouldn’t mind reprising as J.Jonah Jameson, editor of the Daily Planet.

In an interview on Howard Stern that took place at the end of January, Simmons actually said he heard something is going on.

Stern mentions how great of an actor Simmons is, who has been “entertaining us for years,” as well as states Spider-Man is one of the greatest movies ever made. Robin then interjects with mention, “There were three of those” with Howard adding, “Are we doing another one?”

“I just heard that’s a possibility,” Simmons replied.

Stern then flat out asks, “Would you do it?”

“Absolutely,” says Simmons.

Andrew Garfield Said To Be Out; New Spider-Man To Be Cast & Sinister Six Cancelled

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19105:]]

Moments ago Marvel announced Spider-Man will be featured in the MCU.

The big question on everybody’s mind is whether or not Andrew Garfield will return as the Amazing Spider-Man.

The official press release made no mention of Andrew Garfield and did state:  “the new Spider-Man.”

In addition, no mention was made of director Marc Webb or producer Avi Arad.

Now a reporter for The Wrap is stating Andrew Garfield is out and a new actor will be cast as Spider-Man.

“CONFIRMED: Andrew Garfield is NO LONGER Spider-Man,” Linda Ge tweeted. “Someone new will be cast. First appearance in MCU, then solo film.”

Likewise, a journalist for the Wall Street Journal also says Andrew Garfield will not be Spider-Man and adds Sinister Six will not be coming out next year.

“Andrew Garfield will not be in any more Spider-Man movies. Time to cast a new web-slinger!” Ben Fritz tweeted. “Sony will NOT release Sinister Six in Nov 2016, source says. Sony delaying, rethinking, but still developing in light of new deal.”

Marvel and Sony have given the new Spider-Man movie a July 28, 2017 release date.

Update: It’s now said Sinister Six is delayed.

Official: Spider-Man Comes Back To Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19103:]]

It’s official! Spider-Man is back at Marvel.

After months of rumors, Marvel.com has announced Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige will produce the next Spider-Man movie with Amy Pascal, who recently stepped down as Sony Pictures co-chairman to be a part of a new Sony production venture.

Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel Studios film (thought to be Captain America: Civil War, though Avengers 2 is a possibility) before getting a new Spider-Man movie on July 28, 2017 (Update: new release date is July 7, 2017).

Here is the official information:

Marvel’s Kevin Feige to Produce Next Installment of the Spider-Man Franchise with Amy Pascal

(Culver City, California, and Burbank, California February 09, 2015) – Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios announced today that Sony is bringing Marvel into the amazing world of Spider-Man.

Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.

Marvel and Sony Pictures are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films.

The new relationship follows a decade of speculation among fans about whether Spider-Man – who has always been an integral and important part of the larger Marvel Universe in the comic books – could become part of the Marvel Universe on the big screen. Spider-Man has more than 50 years of history in Marvel’s world, and with this deal, fans will be able to experience Spider-Man taking his rightful place among other Super Heroes in the MCU.

Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company said: “Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.”

“We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. “This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.”

“Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker’s story into the future,” added Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.

“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. “Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

Spider-Man Talks May Be Happening Between Sony & Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19066:]]

Yesterday saw news that Amy Pascal had stepped down as co-chairman of Sony Pictures with it said Pascal was going on to be a part of a new production venture and producer on future Amazing Spider-Man movies.

Now in Variety‘s own report about Pascal’s departure, it’s mentioned the biggest decision for Pascal is how to handle the Spider-Man franchise, which did less than what was hoped as Sony thinks Spider-Man should be a billion dollar movie franchise.

While the report appears to just provide speculation as no sources are cited, it does note the plan to go forward with Sinister Six as a way to expand the Spider-Man franchise may need to be re-examined, as when Pascal was head of Sony movies, she was pursuing that path.

It’s stated in the article the new Sony regime may decide to return to the negotiation table with Marvel over Spider-Man’s rights.

Yesterday’s report did see mention by Pascal that the next two years of plans were already slated, so whatever could become of Spider-Man may already be set.

It’s also possible a deal with Marvel could already have gone through, and we are just waiting on the big announcement (Comic-Con?).

Spider-Man Back At Marvel? Amy Pascal Onboard As Producer

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19029:]]

Amy Pascal has stepped down from being co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and chairman of the Motion Picture Group.

She’s leaving to be a part of a new Sony production venture, which will see Pascal produce new movies.

THR reports part of the deal is for Pascal to be onboard as producer on the new all-female Ghostbusters film as well as future Amazing Spider-Man movies. It’s also reported Matt Tolmach will serve as a Spider-Man producer after having left his position as Columbia Pictures president.

Regarding whether Spider-Man has returned to Marvel is unknown, but the the officially released press details are rather interesting.

Pascal released a statement which reads in part plans are set for the next two years, which more than likely includes plans for Spider-Man (note: bold below my own).

“I have spent almost my entire professional life at Sony Pictures and I am energized to be starting this new chapter based at the company I call home,” Pascal said in a statement. “I have always wanted to be a producer. [Sony Entertainment CEO] Michael [Lynton] and I have been talking about this transition for quite some time, and I am grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to pursue my long-held dream and for providing unparalleled support. As the slate for the next two years has come together, it felt like the right time to transition into this new role. I am so grateful to my team, some of whom I have worked with for the last 20 years and others who have joined more recently. I am leaving the studio in great hands. I am so proud of what we have all done together and I look forward to a whole lot more.”

It’s further reported that Sony “will finance Pascal’s venture and retain all distribution rights worldwide to the films.”

Previously leaked e-mails that revealed Sony and Marvel were in talks for Spider-Man mentioned Marvel wanted the creative rights with Sony keeping distribution rights.

However, what is unclear is whether Spider-Man is technically staying at Sony (with Pascal just on as producer), or if Spider-Man is moving to the new production wing under Pascal (and possibly Marvel).

The news of Amy Pascal coming onboard as producer follows reports that Sony was holding a Spider-Man summit in January. Leaked e-mails revealed that Pascal was undecided about Spider-Man returning to Marvel, with reports also stating Marvel wanted a new Spider-Man actor while Pascal wanted to keep Andrew Garfield.

It probably should be noted both Marvel and Sony recently denied rumors of Spider-Man returning to Marvel.

Sinister Six is supposed to be released next year, so more than likely announcements should be coming soon.

Sony Brazil Facebook also teased future plans for Spider-Man are underway as well as teasing Sinister Six.

Review: Guardians of the Galaxy #23 (Bendys)

Bendis has an uncanny ability to take the awe, majesty, mystery, and wonder of the cosmos and turn it into something petty, pedestrian, hackneyed and mundane.  Such has been his tenure on GotG (in name only).

He also has the uncanny ability to treat the GotGINO cast like guest-stars in their own book.  He clearly wants to be writing Avengers stories and working with Avengers characters.  We’re consistently having Avengers shoe-horned onto this team (when there are better cosmic characters going unused – Bug, Mantis, Moondragon, to name but a few), and the storylines are consistently built around the Avengers characters.  This dreadful and seemingly endless Venom storyline is one example.  I’m sure we have some Captain Ms. Marvel storylines to look forward to with dread as well.

On the other hand, since he’s made the GotGINO team into cardboard cut-outs of their former selves, one has to ask oneself if it really matters if they’re given short shrift in their own book – particularly since the zombies keep buying this tripe no matter how poor the quality.

Bendis accomplishes what he really wants to accomplish, though.  He rebuilds Venom into a real powerhouse – just in time for Marvel’s reboot.  In getting there, we have to suffer through an absolutely non-thrilling pseudo-adventure on the planet of the Symbiotes including an implausible and ponderous soliloquy from the Symbiotes explaining their entire back story and motivations.

The GotG team of characters developed by DnA have obvious proven potential for greatness.  I point to the greatness of the Volume II concepts which inspired the top earning movie of 2014.  The sad thing is, instead of expanding on the greatness of Volume II, Bendis has now produced 23 issues of squandered opportunities to build on the greatness of Volume II and has instead focused on tearing down everything that made Volume II great.  Rumor is that Gunn is using more DnA-written material as the inspiration for his GotG movie sequel.  What does that tell you, Bendis defenders?  It should be telling you that Bendis‘ attempt to create an “Avengers-Lite” situation-comedy-oriented team in space has been a miserable creative failure that has wisely been deemed unworthy of use by the Marvel Cinematic Universe decision makers.  Steadily falling sales should also be telling you that at least a portion of the zombies are waking up and rightfully dropping this book.

Once again in this issue, Bendis‘ characterization is completely off kilter – especially for Drax.  He just can’t seem to write Drax properly.  Maybe if he was not so threatened by the better characterizations of Giffen and DnA, he could get Drax right simply by embracing the superior characterization of the past.  Of course, the same could be said of his characterizations of Rocket, Groot, Gamora, and Star-Lord.

I must say that the cover art featuring Rocket is magnificent.  The interior art and coloring are mediocre at best.  In the long shots, the characters are poorly formed – and in some of the close-ups, it’s nearly impossible to tell Star-Lord and Flash Thompson apart.

Next issue begins a new arc.  You guessed it if you guessed that Bendis is doubling-down on madcap for the next arc.  He’s going to tell the story of how Star-Lord got elected to office as President of Spartax without ever running for office.  Were you looking forward to that one?  No – I wasn’t either. Sigh.

Review: NINO #26

It’s funny that this book was created to capture a desperately desired but near non-existent demographic of buyers aged 12 and under, but has instead really just captured about 20,000 adult-aged comic book buyers who have the mentality of age 12 or under and are slap-happy to be treated to sub-par retellings of tired old comic book tropes.

Duggan is simply not up to the task of telling a truly cosmic story. Instead, he admittedly and shamelessly simply copies teen Spider-Man storylines from days gone by. In this issue, he explores the consequences of NINO unwisely revealing his secret identity to the super-villain, Carnage. The predictable consequences and fight outcome ensue. Yawn.

As usual, I was rooting for the villain. Carnage murdering NINO would have been the optimal (and realistic) outcome, but alas, Marvel has to recoup their excessive and unwise investment in NINO, so he implausibly survives. You’d think this would be the final straw for his mother, whose life is threatened by Carnage. Yet, she implausibly continues to demonstrate that she is in no way fit to raise children as she continues to encourage NINO to risk his life, her life, and the life of NINO’s sister. As I said, it would take a 12 or under mentality to ignore all the implausibility.

When I think of all the truly innovative books that sold about the same as or better than NINO that Marvel could have kept on life-support – such as Incredible Hercules, Young Allies, Nova Volume IV, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume II, Agents of Atlas, to name a few – I just shake my head in disgust that Marvel would continue to pour resources into this unworthy tripe in their thus far vain attempt to force it to be successful. Seriously, only a ComicBookResources reviewer (aka Marvel Shill) could love this book.

We get a brief update on NINO’s unfit father, Jesse, as well. It seems the poor sap is lost in space along with a crew of equally mentally challenged idiots. It seems the idiot apple, NINO, didn’t fall too far from the tree.

The art has typically been the only saving grace of this book, but as the sales of this book have rightly fallen off the cliff – so has the art. The cover art is amateurish and the interior art is poorly constructed as well. NINO looks less like an annoying 15-year-old character and more like a 20-something-year-old character. Curiel does his typical fine job with colors, but his talents are wasted on this book.

So join most of the rest of the comic book world and leave this book on the shelf. Let’s make 2015 the year NINO bites the dust.

Sinister Six Said To Be Happening; Spider-Man Might Not Be At Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18836:]]

A pair of interesting tweets, which have since been deleted, surfaced stating the Sinister Six movie is happening.

A resident of Vancouver tweeted, “It seems the @SinisterSix movie is going to shoot in Vancouver. I might see Spider-Man running around my hood! I’ll eat sand to be an extra.”

The Twitter user apparently got confirmation about Sinister Six from someone who worked on Planet of the Apes.

@Mugsyface dude who worked on Planet of the Apes and used our stock for it came back. Requested S6 stuff for research. Said it was happening.”

The news of Sony moving forward on Sinister Six brings up the question whether or not Spider-Man is back at Marvel.

According to leaked e-mails from back around November, Sony and Marvel were in talks for Spider-Man to return to Marvel.

The e-mails revealed that if Spider-Man returned to Marvel, Sony would be fast-tracking a new Spider-Man solo movie, and also that Sinister Six was up in the air.

A Spider-Man summit was also said to be held this month to determine the future of Spider-Man at Sony.

It’s possible with this news of Sony filming Sinister Six in Vancouver, that Sony is following their original plans to go with a Sinister Six movie first, possibly followed by Venom, a female superhero Spider-Man character film, and then Amazing Spider-Man 3.

In addition, both Sony and Marvel have recently denied rumors that Spider-Man is back at Marvel, with Sony stating the rumors had “no validity whatsoever” and Marvel seemingly being surprised by the latest rumors.
