Sony Pictures SEO Tom Rothman has confirmed that Sony is rebooting its Spider-Man spinoff universe, and it’s coming with new actors.
Appearing on The Town podcast with Matt Belloni, Rothman made it clear the so-called “Sony Spider-Verse” isn’t dead. It’s getting a reset.
When asked directly about the future of the live-action Spider-Man spinoff universe — separate from the animated films — Rothman didn’t hesitate.
“No,” he said when asked if it was dead.
When Belloni followed up about returning to those characters, Rothman confirmed: “Yes.”
Belloni asked if it would be a fresh reboot with new people.
Rothman: “Yes.”
That means Sony plans to recast and restart the entire live-action Spider-Man spinoff universe that started with Tom Hardy as Venom (a Venom animated movie has recently been announced).

What This Means For Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
Sony Pictures previously launched its Spider-Man spinoff universe with Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter.
While Venom found box office success, the later entries struggled critically and financially. Morbius became an internet meme. Madame Web mega-bombed and was widely panned. Kraven the Hunter failed to reignite interest and completely failed.
Rothman’s comments strongly suggest Sony is wiping the slate clean rather than trying to salvage the current continuity.
The big question now is whether the reboot will remain villain-focused or pivot toward a broader Spider-Man-adjacent universe with stronger connections to Marvel Studios.
Previous rumors have said Sony is going to concentrate on Spider-Man related characters, such as Spider-Noir that is happening with Nicolas Cage at Amazon, and “Spider” characters like Spider-Punk and Spider-Gwen.

Marvel Partnership Still Strong
Rothman also addressed Sony’s partnership with Marvel Studios.
When asked how things are going between Sony and Marvel, Rothman responded: “It’s great.”
Sony still controls the live-action Spider-Man rights, while Marvel Studios partners on the mainline Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland. The two studios have maintained a working relationship since Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Up next is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, out this summer.
