Jake Gyllenhaal Passes On Suicide Squad, Too

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18832:]]

Following Tom Hardy’s departure from the Suicide Squad movie, Jake Gyllenhaal was said to be big favorite to replace Hardy and play Rick Flagg.

Now it’s learned that Jake Gyllenhaal has passed on the role as well, as reported by Variety.

According to rumor, it was stated Tom Hardy passed because he didn’t like the script, which didn’t give him enough screentime. It was also said more room in the script was written for Will Smith and Jared Leto.

No reason was given for Jake Gyllenhaal not wanting to be a part of the movie, but we can guess he wasn’t thrilled with the script as well.

It might even be possible that Rick Flagg gets killed off in the movie, as this is the Suicide Squad and members are known to die off rather quickly (at least in the comics).

While David Ayer looks to find Tom Hardy’s replacement, Suicide Squad will star Jared Leto as The Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. Viola Davis is said to be in talks to play Amanda Waller; Jesse Eisenberg is rumored to follow his Batman vs. Superman debut as Lex Luthor, and most recently, Ben Affleck is rumored to appear as Batman.

Suicide Squad has an August 6, 2016 release.

Fantastic Four’s Kate Mara Up For Star Wars Spinoff

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18831:]]

Kate Mara, known for House of Cards and who also will be playing Sue Storm in the Fantastic Four reboot, is said to be up for the Gareth Edwards Star Wars spinoff movie.

Four names have surfaced for the Star Wars spinoff female lead, which also include Rooney Mara (sister to Kate), Felicity Jones, and Tatiana Maslany.

A reporter for Variety is stating Kate Mara is the fourth.

Nothing is known about the character or even what Edwards’ Star Wars spinoff will be about.

Recently, Gary Whitta left as the screenwriter following having worked on the movie for a year; Simon Kinberg is now finishing the script.

Various rumors have stated the Gareth Edwards Star Wars spinoff may be about the Rebels securing the plans to the Death Star with a bunch of bounty hunters involved, while another rumor has said it could be a Han Solo origin story with Aaron Paul as the younger version of Harrison Ford.

The Gareth Edwards Star Wars spinoff is due out December 2016 so as soon as production is set to start, Disney should be releasing official information and making announcements.

Kate Mara has Fantastic Four coming out this August, Ridley Scott’s The Martian in November, and assuming Fantastic Four does well enough, Fantastic Four 2 in 2017.

Captain America: Civil War Is Avengers 3.8 Says Anthony Mackie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18830:]]

Last week saw Anthony Mackie confirm Falcon for Captain America: Civil War and state filming starts in April.

Recently also saw confirmation that Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan will reprise as Black Widow and the Winter Soldier, respectively, on top of Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

Now the latest is that while speaking in a recent interview, Mackie says Captain America: Civil War is “Avengers 3.8.”

“Let’s just say it’s a wing-ding-doozy of a time,” Mackie offered reports Collider.  “The great thing about it is, after seeing The Avengers I joked and said Captain America 2 was Avengers 1.5.  Now with Avengers 2 coming out… Captain America 3 is so far beyond Avengers 2.5 and onto the realm of Avengers 3.8.  It’s by far one of the most stupendous rides Marvel has put together.”

While Marvel has yet to officially announce the plot, Captain America: Civil War will find Captain America at odds with Iron Man for some reason, with heroes taking sides and facing off.

“Captain America: Civil War” opens May 6, 2016 directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.

David Duchovny Up For More X-Files

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18829:]]

Three days ago saw word from Fox executives that they are planning on reviving X-Files.

Now David Duchovny says he is onboard for more episodes, but does state he would rather have it be a limited series than a full season.

Duchovny told USA Today he’s “more than happy and excited to bring it back and do it again with (co-star) Gillian (Anderson) and (series creator) Chris (Carter).”

“I’m assuming that it will happen sooner rather than later now,” Duchovny continued. “We’ll see what form, how many (episodes). Certainly I can’t nor would I be interested in doing a full season. It will be in some kind of limited form. We’re all old, we don’t have the energy for a full season,” he added with a laugh.

News of a limited series, or even how about an X-Files made-for-TV movie, sounds about right as David Duchovny is also starring in a new NBC series with Aquarius.

Likewise, Duchovny’s X-Files co-star, Gillian Anderson, is currently involved with NBC’s Hannibal.

The DLC features an all-star Holywood cast including John Malkovich, Bill Paxton, Rose McGowan and Jon Bernthal.

Info:

The first DLC pack for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Havoc, is on the way.  The epic DLC pack arrives exclusively on Xbox LIVE for the Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft and Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft beginning on January 27th, with other platforms to follow.

“We’re looking forward to playing the new DLC content with fans. The response to Advanced Warfare has been amazing and the creativity and gameplay variety of the content coming in  Havoc is more exciting than ever,” said Michael Condrey, Co-Founder and Studio Head, Sledgehammer Games. “The entire team at Sledgehammer Games is really excited about the release of the Havoc and we are ready to kick-off a long DLC season filled with new maps, the new Exo Zombies mode and more,” said Glen Schofield, Co-Founder and Studio Head, Sledgehammer Games.

The definitive DLC offering, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Havoc includes four new, epic multiplayer maps, access to the versatile AE4 directed energy assault rifle, the AE4 Widowmaker custom variant, plus an exciting new Zombies cooperative mode called Exo Zombies, that features a story told through the eyes of four employees of the Atlas corporation, played by a celebrity cast consisting of John Malkovich (In the Line of Fire, RED, Burn After Reading), Bill Paxton (Aliens, Titanic, Edge of Tomorrow), Rose McGowan (Planet Terror, Scream), and Jon Bernthal (Fury, The Walking Dead). The actors provide their voice over and likeness in a dark and cinematic experience new to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Players enter a world where a DNA bioweapon unexpectedly spawns a bloodthirsty, ravenous mutant horde infecting an entire secret Atlas research facility and sending personnel running for their lives. Following a failed evacuation, four survivors, un-trained and underprepared, must face the most vicious mutations ever unleashed. The Exo Zombies co-op mode ushers in a new breed of Zombies and a truly unique experience, coming first to the Havoc DLC Pack.

Havoc delivers four new, exotic and diverse multiplayer maps set around the globe tailor-made for players to unleash their exoskeleton’s abilities, including—

·  Core: Deploy to the Gobi desert where the ravaged ruins of a nuclear fusion plant set the stage for a high-octane warzone. Take down enemies through the wreckage in long-range combat or get up-close and personal in the tunnels surrounding the central turbine. Activate decontamination drones using the map-based scorestreak to help clean out the competition.

·  Urban: Prepare yourself for brutal, high-speed combat in Dallas Ward 3, a future mega structure, funneling players into a close-quarters free-for-all. This modular compound’s verticality unleashes the exoskeleton’s capabilities. Stay focused during the timed event as blast doors alter the map’s flow and sightlines.

·  Sideshow: In the shadow of Devil’s Tower, Wyoming, this abandoned inn’s open layout amplifies its creep factor. Blast your way through the clown inn with close-quarters battles or use long-range site-lines from the mining facilities and natural terrain. Use the map-based scorestreak to activate the lights, music, and magic of the clown marquee and rain down a barrage of rainbow smoke-trailed cannonballs.

·  Drift: An idyllic ski resort high in the Rocky Mountains is transformed into a festive high-altitude playground, perfect for an all-out firefight. Make your way to the highly contested over watch in the glass observation deck or take a ride on the carousel to deliver 360 degrees of carnage. Players can use the map-altering timed event to their advantage as an avalanche of snow and debris disorients players, intensifying the battle.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Havoc will be available first, exclusively on Xbox LIVE on January 27th.  The Havoc DLC Pack is also included in the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare DLC Season Pass*, where fans can purchase all four epic DLC Packs planned for the year, as part of the discounted bundle. Grey Hulk A Possibility In The Avengers 2?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18823:]]

I would be surprised to see Mr. Fixit in The Avengers 2, but I would love it, and anything from Peter David’s run would make a great standalone Hulk movie.

If what a new toy suggests, it’s possible the Grey Hulk may appear in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

A promotion for the Funko POP! Vinyl Avengers 2 toys features the Grey Hulk, which of course, could just be for the merchandising line, but imagine if at the end of Avengers 2, Banner/Hulk are thought to be dead, and we end up seeing the Grey Hulk in Las Vegas. I know I may be dreaming, but it would be awesome.

The Grey Hulk was actually the first personality/version of the Hulk, but the coloring was changed to green with a different personality. The Grey Hulk is weaker than the Savage Green Hulk, but smarter and more cunning. Marvel Comics writer Peter David brought the Grey Hulk back with Incredible Hulk #324.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18822:]]

“The Avengers: Age Of Ultron” hits May 1, 2015 directed by Joss Whedon starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Paul Bettany as Vision, with James Spader as Ultron.

Synopsis:

When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

Disney Scrapped George Lucas’ New Star Wars Plans

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18824:]]

It’s learned that for the first time, Star Wars will be without George Lucas’ storylines.

Lucas recently attended a premiere for his latest movie, Strange Magic, where he told Cinema Blend, “The ones that I sold to Disney, they came up to the decision that they didn’t really want to do those. So they made up their own. So it’s not the ones that I originally wrote [on screen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens].”

Lucas wouldn’t state what his ideas for the new Star Wars movies were, and it’s also thought that screenwriter Michael Arndt was working on the Lucas version of Star Wars when he was let go, with Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back) taking over writing chores.

Another rumor has stated that Abrams and Kasdan rewrote the script to include more of the original characters, with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.

It’s also possible Disney may have saved us all from the next Jar Jar.

Batman & Ben Affleck Rumored For Suicide Squad

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18817:]]

It’s being speculated/rumored that Batman will appear in the Suicide Squad movie.

A blogger for Forbes is stating he is hearing Batman and Ben Afflek may appear at the end of Suicide Squad involved with The Joker, which would lead into solo Batman films also starring The Joker.

A second rumor that surfaced says the Joker will escape from prison in the Suicide Squad movie.

If we put two and two together, we see how Batman is involved.

The rumor isn’t all that original as the Joker escaping from prison with Batman in pursuit follows Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel storyline, which is the inspiration for Batman Vs. Superman.

The blogger does note, of course, that nothing is set in stone.

Jared Leto is set to play The Joker and recently stated that “Batman is Dead” when a fan remarked that Batman is an unseen hero.

Tom Hardy is also said to have left Suicide Squad, possibly over not agreeing with the amount of screentime for his character, Rick Flagg, and disliking the script.

Suicide Squad has an August 6, 2016 release directed by David Ayer.

Review: Boyhood (2014)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18814:]]

Growing Up Is Hard To Do

A Film Review of Boyhood

Greetings readers!  Hopefully you all had a good holiday season, but this is a new year and that means the Hollywood Award circuit is in full effect.  The Academy released its Oscar nominees few days ago to what seems like an absolute love fest for Indie films.  The bigger films starring bigger stars are low on this past year’s totem which can mean whatever you want it to mean, but when you look at the dollars and cents, it means 2014 was an off year for Hollywood.  According to boxofficemojo.com 2014’s domestic take saw 5.2% less gross than 2013 and about the same percentage was down from the number of tickets sold.  To be honest it’s not all about the money either.  There was no “absolute must-see for everyone;” no true juggernaut that people should be aware of.  So why not make it a year for the Indies to regain some prominence?  8 Films are nominated for Best Picture, and I will be reviewing them all for you right here at Cosmic Book News.  I’ve already done one for American Sniper, up next is Richard Linklater’s experimental drama Boyhood.

Right away, if you note some sort of a stomach turning sensation with the term “experimental” being connected to a movie then rest easy; it’s a natural response.  Thankfully this isn’t a film where the experiment at work isn’t self indulgence, hyper abstract imagery, elusive content or a mind-numbing thematic onslaught.  Linklater directs the same cast over the course of 12 years in blocks of real time to capture his characters’ evolution, but also the physical growth of his cast to further enhance the realism.  The narrative features a (surprise, surprise) coming of age tale of a young boy and his family amidst a bevy real life problems such as divorce, geographic displacement, alcoholism, bullying, peer pressure and parents trying their best to stay connected to their kids despite it all.  Although this film is billed as charting new territory in the depiction of childhood, it also happens to be a calculated examination that pays much credence to the perspective of parents.  Having also been written by Linklater, a personal touch of constant self reflection is apparent for most characters in every scene.  The pacing is deliberate to present some of the most sincere vignettes of family life caught on camera despite the film being a fictional narrative.  Like real life, this film isn’t always beautiful.  In fact, it’s mostly ugly and awkward, but at least it doesn’t look bad on the screen.  Worry not about home video style, handheld camera juggling.  The cinematography is smooth, classic and dramatic.  It prevents the dialogue from stealing the entire story, thus turning Boyhood into a really elaborate audio book.

12 years is a long time to keep a film in production for, even at a part time rate.  Linklater and co. probably amassed a healthy amount of footage over that time period and this brings us to the first hurdle for the audience.  This film has a runtime of 165 minutes and you will feel that time pass all too well.  There are several moments in the plot where it felt like the drama would turn to heighten the danger as well as the tempo, but it never happens.  Perhaps this was done to mimic mundane life too closely.  There’s no question that a multitude of traps exist in life that can easily get small kids into big trouble, but to paraphrase Star Lord, if the kid really isn’t a complete dick (thank you parents), chances are they will veer from that kind of trouble.  The lack of any defined or constant threat to any protagonist will defang any plot and the reality of Boyhood as a cinematic journey is that it reaches a certain level of intimacy and intrigue early on and then plateaus.

The various family crisis that are depicted in Boyhood never shows the audience any full and raw emotional outburst from anyone in the cast which further adds to the film’s overall monotone pacing handicap.  The reason for this is that the story is actually being narrated to the audience through passive observations by the main character: Mason Jr. played by Ellar Coltrane.  Right now, young master Coltrane is receiving much Hollywood love as his contributions are being hailed as “a breakthrough performance” and that would be correct if that description simply meant having a feature role in a film nobody saw coming.  His performance exists, but is exceptional in no way other than having one of those “different” Hollywood looks that is neither overly pretty nor unattractive to justify him being there in the first place.

One of two explanations can account for this.  First, Linklater specifically directed Coltrane to just pretend his scenes and remember his lines (which is fine for him as a young child, but doesn’t fly at all when he gets older) or two, Coltrane doesn’t really have it; i.e. the screen presence, the charisma, the “it” factor.  Either way, Mason Jr. is our main character and he literally grows up for the audience onscreen from childhood to adolescence to young adulthood and the only thing he delivers is … the air of indifference.  Unless a child is being fed mescaline, there is no way any realistic coming of age tale can feature the absolute absence of anger, bliss or any other possible emotion between the two.  There is far too much neutered “whatever” attitude from Coltrane at every age that I simply stopped believing him as an actual participant in his own journey.  There are far too many opportunities for Coltrane to unleash some very real angst as his character is put through more than enough trials to justify a clear path to becoming a sociopath.  All things being equal, Mason is a pretty damn decent kid despite the circumstances and it actually feels weird.  The only rationalization the audience has for Mason Jr.’s relative sainthood is the imperfect, yet sincere and constant parenting at work during his life.

Anyone can notice the effect of a veteran actor that’s engaged with his or her character in just about any kind of film.  Such an effect is even more noticeable when veterans are matched up with complete novices as is the case between the adult and child cast members of Boyhood.  Not enough credit can be given to both Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke for their work as the mother and father in this production for it is every scene they share with their children (Mason and Samantha) that completely blows away every other.  These scenes make this film worth watching, period.  Any actor will tell you that a performance is based on a give and take relationship with fellow cast members.  Neither Arquette nor Hawke get much of anything from either Coltrane or Lorelei Linklater (Samantha) which requires them to “be the parent” for the film’s content as well as its context, but at least they take full advantage of their heavy lifting in each scene.  Arquette as the mom is the disciplinarian so there is a certain stern responsibility that goes into her character, but she accomplishes this without becoming a dictator which is thanks to her tempered balance with maternal concern.  This sincere balance is capable of masking both kids’ “deer in the headlights” demeanor as genuine moments of learning their lessons.  Hawke as the every other weekend father is the cool jokester who wants to befriend his kids as much as he wants to dish out legitimate street smarts.  His tact lulls the kids into pleasant comfort while still finding several moments to deliver important messages that transcend his own cavalier attitude and lifestyle.

Boyhood is an exceptional family film despite being rated R for language and adult situations, but even those never get graphic (no nudity) or violent (no onscreen striking).  The content of the scenarios and the parenting dialogue take great pains to reproduce realistic situations that today’s families have to deal with.  Watching this can be as rewarding to children with the appropriate adult supervision as it obviously will be for adults.  The real trick is keeping everyone in the family in front of the screen before the credits roll because it is a slow moving picture.  If you are up to the challenge, you will be rewarded with an education into the modern family featuring a unique, real life development of its cast that is seamless in its transition between ages.  Perhaps this unique experiment regarding its production will be enough to win Oscar gold as the Best Picture, but limitations regarding its pacing and performances couldn’t make its chances better than any other for the win.

New Joker Jared Leto Says Batman Is Dead?!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18811:]]

2016 will see the new Joker, played by Jared Leto, in the Suicide Squad movie.

It’s not been confirmed the movie will feature Batman, but Joker is already up to his old tricks.

While participaing in a chat on Vyrt, a fan mentioned that Batman was an unseen hero.

Leto’s reply to the fan?

“Batman is dead.”

Obviously, Jared Leto doesn’t mean Batman is really dead, but more than likely Leto is just talking smack meaning that there is a new Joker in town.

New Batman Ben Affleck debuts in Batman Vs. Superman, which hits March 25, 2016. Suicide Squad featuring Jared Leto as the Joker hits five months later. I wonder if Zack Snyder will reference Joker in Batman Vs. Superman?

Suicide Squad has an August 6, 2016 release directed by David Ayer.

New Green Lantern Rumored To Be Older & Darker; Not In Justice League Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18810:]]

A new rumor has hit the net this week surrounding the rebooted Green Lantern for DC’s Justice League slate of films.

Warner Bros. did announce a new Green Lantern movie for 2020, but the rumor is stating that Green Lantern won’t be in the 2017 Justice League movie.

In addition, the rumor has it that Zack Snyder is going to use a Green Lantern that is 45 to 55 years old and is described as a broken soldier with a darker personality. It’s also said Oa is “doomed.”

The rumor comes from the techtimes.com website who seems to say that the rumor has been online for a while.

It’s the first I’ve heard of it.

With WB’s 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds considered a flop, is it possible they are going to keep Green Lantern out of the Justice League movie and possibly wait for Justice League Part 2 in 2019 to introduce the new Hal Jordan, with the new Green Lantern movie to follow in 2020?

At one point in the comics, Hal Jordan was shown to be aged, with grey hair, which initially was a result of actual aging in the comic book, but Geoff Johns has since retconned that away explaining the grey hair as a result of Parallax.

World War Z Sequel To Have A Clean Slate

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18806:]]

2013’s World War Z was deemed a failure by Hollywood insiders prior to the movie’s debut; however, they were way off as the Brad Pitt zombie movie went on to be a hit making over $540 million worldwide.

Paramount quickly greenlit a sequel, and now an interesting detail has become known.

Steve Knight, who wrote the Word War Z script, tells IndieWire that the sequel won’t have anything to do with the first movie.

Actually, Knight almost sounds as if the World War Z sequel will be a reboot.

“I thought, ‘why not? What fun.’ It’s not quite like the other, we’re starting with clean slate. When they’ve signed off we’re on,” Knight said.

Of course, Knight might not be mean something like a straight reboot, but that it’s possible the World War Z sequel won’t rely or even mention elements from the first movie.

Knight’s comments also seem to question whether or not Brad Pitt will be involved.

Pitt previously stated he would be attached to the film if they got the script right.

It’s On! Chris Evans Vs. Chris Pratt For Super Bowl 49

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18799:]]

Let’s get it on!

Super Bowl 49 is right around the corner pitting the Seattle Seahawks vs. the New England Patriots.

The Seahawks managed to squeeze out a miracle against Green Bay and are on to the Big Game.

Meanwhile, Brady and Belichick are apparently up to their dirty tricks again as New England is now being investigated for intentionally deflating footballs in the game against the Colts, which might cost the Patriots their #1 draft pick for next season (and hopefully another $500k for Belichick!).

Now Captain America and Star-Lord are getting in on the action as a Twitter war has erupted between Chris Evans and Chris Pratt.

Captain America Chris Evans is a Brady fan and originally from Boston, with Pratt backing Russell Wilson and his hometown of Seattle.

Below you can check out a series of tweets between the two.

Review: American Sniper (2015)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18796:]]

War.  War Never Changes.

It is Now; Always Has Been and Always Will Be Hell.

A Film Review of American Sniper

American Sniper, directed by Clint Eastwood, is a work of fiction despite being based on true events as described by the “American Sniper” himself, Chris Kyle, in his autobiography.  Characters will be treated as characters in this review, and any commentary regarding individuals does not refer to their real life counterparts.  The very real issues regarding modern warfare and society will be commented upon and taken as seriously as the film itself presents them.  I have not read Kyle’s autobiography so I will not comment on screenwriter Jason Hall’s reported “loose” adaptation of a book about someone else’s personal observations of their own life.  This film uses the iconic status of Chris Kyle as the deadliest sniper in American history to make some important commentary regarding any war’s effect on any soldier (even exceptional ones) and their families.  No soldier is immune from the harmful touch of war; not even “The Legend.”

The concept of “the hero” is as important to military recruiters as it is to movie makers as this film certainly lays the groundwork early for establishing Kyle as a gifted warrior for the sake of good (the sheep dog) and continues to build his “Achillean” altruism at various moments describing how he transitioned from civilian to soldier.  Hawks will love how this story makes the motivation for the soldier and potential soldier simple and uncompromising.  Someone sees something on the news or reads something online and it becomes personal, so much so that anger inspires vengeance and that leads to enlistment.  Such is the case for Kyle as his journey to weaponize himself in SEAL training is insanely difficult, but despite the adversity, he stares it down with another signature of the classic hero: a never give up, never surrender code of conduct.  But this screen story doesn’t sell out completely by romanticizing Kyle as the golden calf that belongs on everyone’s altar of American glory.  Every sequence where “The Legend,” Chris Kyle, aces terrorists in Iraq is followed up by “Lesser than the Legend,” Chris Kyle as he struggles to keep it together back home in between tours.  He’s despondent, disinterested, paranoid and losing every personal connection he has to his family.  This is the kind of balance that Doves would appreciate because as simple as the motives and rationale may be for going to war, the psychological fallout of such an experience is layered with complexity.  Kyle isn’t the sharp, charismatic, collected and concerned warrior/brother he was in Iraq.  He’s a man that has seen and done horrific things and slapping labels like “patriotism” and “freedom” to cover it up becomes a less and less effective means of compartmentalizing.

Still, this film favors the heroic Chris Kyle overall because it isn’t concerned with being critical of war as much as it is about being critical about how war changes soldiers.  It’s a shame that Eastwood did not take a more significant moment to make some commentary regarding an important part in the process of a soldier returning to civilian life whether it is permanent or in between multiple tours: psychological debriefing.  Every soldier goes through this process to some extent when coming home and most people don’t know much about it.  Soldiers who obviously needed more critical attention and therapy are the ones who come back and beat their wives, shoot their friends or commit suicide.  If we are to take this country’s less than stellar record regarding the physical care of its veterans as a measuring stick, one can presume that the resources available for helping soldiers work out the psychological hell they went through is equally lacking.  Chris Kyle is clearly depicted as a soldier who would have greatly benefited from more thorough debriefing, but this classic hero is capable of willful, self-healing as he gives back by helping other wounded and maimed warriors of the VA.  Please note: This is not an easy, sure-fire fix that works for every soldier.

Despite this film being a drama, it shows off a number of expertly shot and visually satisfying action segments.  The film begins with a number of tension building sniper sequences where Kyle stalks his prey through a magnified scope which are quite adept at allowing the audience to identify with Kyle’s inner turmoil over taking human life, especially for the first time.  However, the audience will not be kept in the bell tower for the duration of the film as Kyle gets down and dirty on the ground floor with Marines charged with clearing buildings, one of the most dangerous jobs for soldiers in an urban warfare environment.  Gunplay sequences are procedural, but acute, demonstrative and indicative of films more strictly devoted to explosions and body counts.  I won’t go so far as to say this film could teach the likes of Black Hawk Down a few lessons, but it certainly gets across the lethality of Navy SEALs as well as the contemporary American soldier in general.

Most of the cast puts forth very adequate performances to support the main character’s evolution and journey.  Sienna Miller as Taya delivers every wife of a soldier’s worst nightmare regarding the safety and return of their husbands from the brink of disaster.  However, this film makes no mistake regarding the singularity of its focus and it is all about Chris Kyle, or rather Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle.  Cooper undergoes a significant physical transformation favoring a wider and buffer frame than the trim and defined body type he regularly sports.  He assimilates a Texan accent with acceptable fluency and does not break for the film’s duration.  As physical as Cooper is in his embodiment of Chris Kyle, it is his facial expressions that sell his performance.  The audience shares in Kyle’s horror at watching the Towers fall on the news.  We grate our teeth in his determination to become a SEAL.  We hold our breaths before he pulls the trigger.  And we are completely lost when he is unable to reconnect to anything real in his civilian life.  Bradley Cooper is an actor who has developed a reputation for really getting into and emotionally selling out his characters with consistency, reliability and superiority.  His interpretation of Chris Kyle is no different.  Whether “The Legend” is as close to “the reality” this film presents, Cooper’s Chris Kyle is a sympathetic character whose devotion to his personal mission of protecting his brothers in arms is as admirable as his complete disregard for his own family stateside is deplorable.  This is where Cooper’s acumen really shines through because he’s as devoted to showing a man being disintegrated by war as he is at producing G.I. Joe.  Bradley Cooper is every bit as classic as any other Hollywood leading man in history and his performance in American Sniper is a continued testament to that fact.

Clint Eastwood may be turning 85 years old this year, but his ability to direct a poignant and entertaining film is defying the physics of father time.  I have enjoyed a number of the films he has directed, but this is easily my favorite.  It’s got intellectual meat, visual eye candy and cultural significance.  All these things combined make it the clear cut leader for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, right?  Hold the phone.  There’s still a ton of Indie love for the rest of the nominees and in an off year for Hollywood, it might be too much of a taboo for a big budget studio film to walk away with the gold, especially when most of the contenders in every category is being maligned for what one could describe as a vanilla sky of alternatives.  American Sniper is not an easy film to watch because no matter how romanticized war can be, it’s still hell and this film has a number of absolutely gut-wrenching moments.  A number of films this year are worthy of my personal recommendation, but few are as accessible as this one.  Regardless of where your personal politics regarding the state of current American warfare stand, everyone can come together to acknowledge its brutal nature as well as its human cost.

Batman Vs. Superman Fights Described & More Details

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18790:]]

We learn details about the fights in Batman Vs. Superman from stuntman/choreographer Guillermo Grispo.

Grispo has worked as a fight coordinator on the likes of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, 300: Rise of an Empire and also on Kingsman: The Secret Service, Riddick and the Legend of Hercules.

While Christopher Nolan used a form of martial arts known as Keysi for his Batman Trilogy, Grispo is trained in more traditional forms of martial arts including Aikido and Ju-Jitsu, both of which stem from original Japanese martial arts. In addition, Grispo is knowledgeable with the Japanese sword, Russian Sambo, Filipino Boxing, fencing, knife handling and Kempo.

Grispo participated in an interview with the Argentinean website Los Andes. Below are some of the details (translated).

Grispo says Warner Bros. is very strict and he cannot say much, but there should be no surprise if he does say that Batman and Superman face off in the film. He says the fight is one of the most important sequences in the film, which he was actively involved in designing. The Batman Vs. Superman fight features a series of punches/fights and physical movements put together with his partner, Ryan Watson.

Grispo goes on to state that you would think Batman would have no chance, that Superman would crush Batman like a bug. He says, but when you see the movie it will makes sense, and there is a clever explanation behind the Batman Vs. Superman confrontation that at first seems completely disadvantageous for Batman.

Grispo says Batman will fight the way that he has always dreamed to see him fight. Batman is a character so prepared in martial arts that he can do many things, but it’s not usually taken advantage of. Grispo then goes on to state that he wasn’t happy with how Christopher Nolan handled the action scenes in The Dark Knight Trilogy, stating the action scenes “are not very good” both from a technical viewpoint of martial arts – due to the choreography and mismanagement of camera.

Grispo continues stating not to get him wrong, Nolan is a great filmmaker – he takes off his hat to him – but it seems to him that Nolan did not taking the time required for the fights, as they have to be shocking. Grispo says Zack Snyder loves to prepare, which is a luxury.

Grispo then states there will be a big difference between how Batman fights in Batman Vs. Superman compared to the Nolan movies.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter and Tao Okamoto in new character roles for the film. Marvel Surprised At Spider-Man Rumors

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18787:]]

This past week saw new Spider-Man rumors hit the net stating that Spider-Man in The Avengers: Infinity War – Part One was a done deal.

Following that, Sony quickly responded stating it wasn’t true.

Now some of the Hollywood trade reporters have gathered together on a podcast with some updated news.

Marc Graser of Variety, who broke the Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America 3 story, stated he talked with Marvel about the Infinity War rumor.

According to Graser, Marvel was surprised by the rumor and was “wondering why it popped up again” and “had no clue why.”

Graser also speculated about Spider-Man returning to Marvel where Graser said it will involve a lot of money.

Graser said it’s up to producer and the former head of Marvel Studios, Avi Arad, for Spider-Man to be featured in Disney movies as Arad controls Spider-Man at Sony.

Graser also pointed out that Spider-Man is really the only thing Arad has going on right now.

Another point was made that Disney is already making a lot of money from Spider-Man as they own the merchandising rights to the Spider-Man movies, so it’s not like they really need Spider-Man in their films.

“They would love Spider-Man to be in one of their movies, and it would just boost sales,” Graser said. “But they don’t need it.”

While Graser seemed to be insinuating it’s a long shot that Spider-Man would be back at Marvel, he did state that he wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel is having screenwriters working on scripts with Spider-Man in them just to have things ready if a deal does go through.

Regarding Spider-Man costing a lot of money, Disney did pay billions for Marvel and Star Wars, so it’s not like they haven’t dished it out before.

Henry Cavill Wants to Play Superman For As Long As It Takes (Video)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18785:]]

We get more video featuring Henry Cavill talking Superman as the actor was once again interviewed at the BAFTAs.

This time Henry Cavill is asked how many more times will he want to play Superman.

Cavill’s response comes as good news for fans of his Man of Steel.

“As many as it takes,” Cavill said. “I love the character. I love working with Warner Bros. and what they are doing with it. So fingers crossed I’ll be able to tell the story for many, many years to come.”

Cavill is also asked whether his favorite British past time is having afternoon tea or throwing one back at at pub. Cavill responds with the latter.

“I am always… rather… to throw one back at a pub,” Cavill said with a grin.

Speaking of the pub, when Henry Cavill was in Michigan filming Batman Vs. Superman, the actor ran into some trouble at a local bar as an apparent argument ensued with a group of Michigan natives calling themselves the “Deaf Wolfpack.” Apparently Cavill misunderstood a fan who happened to be deaf, which led to the fan’s friends getting a bit rowdy.

Watch the video below with Henry Cavill talking Superman, and Cavill previously stated Batman Vs. Superman will make cinematic history as well.

Ethan Hawke Says Scott Derrickson Is Right Choice For Doctor Strange

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18784:]]

Ethan Hawke was said to be a potential candidate to play Doctor Strange, and while he won’t get the chance to play the Sorcerer Supreme for Marvel, the actor did previously work with director Scott Derrickson on the hit horror movie Sinister.

While participating in a recent Reddit QnA, Ethan Hawke was asked about Doctor Strange and offered the following, stating it’s in good hands with Derrickson.

Doctor Strange sounds particularly interesting to me, not just because of the quality of the comic, but because of the man Marvel hired at the helm. Scott Derricksen directed me in SINISTER, and there’s a lot of lousy horror movies made. But Scott Derricksen really understands the genre. And the math and geometry involved in telling a great ghost story. And I feel certain that he will make an excellent Doctor Strange film if they give him the reins.

But really, I don’t covet any roles as much as I covet relationships with talented people. People often ask me “Do I prefer theater or film, or writing or acting?” And what I really prefer is being in a room with gifted, passionate people. Because it’s contagious. It helps you be in touch with the best part of yourself.

And sometimes, that doesn’t mean really successful, big-shot types. Sometimes it means being in the room with students, and young people whose idealism is undaunted.

I like listening to Laurelai Linklater and Ellar Coltrane talk about movies (my costars in BOYHOOD), and art, cuz they talk straight from their heart, with no secret agenda.

Regarding whether or not Ethan Hawke was going to play Doctor Strange, he recently stated on a podcast that he would be open to playing a similar character:

“If people are going put up with somebody like me, they want to make sure you’re going put asses in seats, and there’s a lot of actors that are going to to put more asses in seats than me. There’s a tremendous amount of salesmanship that’s now really important to a studio like that. It’s a tremendous amount of time in your life where you’re working, and you’re not acting. They’re making movies at a high rate, and they’re making them successfully. I’m totally open to doing something like that.”

Doctor Strange has a November 4, 2016 release starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
