Black Panther Chadwick Boseman Would Rather Have An Action Figure Than A Golden Globe

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18930:]]

Chadwick Boseman has been passed over this year for a Golden Globe and an Oscar award for playing James Brown in Get on Up.

It’s really no big deal to Boseman as the actor says he would rather have an action figure than Oscar or Golden Globe gold.

“When it comes down to it, I’d rather have an action figure than a Golden Globe,” Boseman said, reports THR.

Of course, Boseman is referencing his Marvel deal with Black Panther, as Boseman is set to play Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War and is thought to make an appearance in this May’s The Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

Independent.com also reports Chadwick Boseman has signed a five-picture deal with Marvel to portray Black Panther.

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron hits May 1st 2015; Captain America: Civil War has a May 5, 2016 release.

Rob Liefeld Says Deadpool Is A “Pulse-Pounding Adventure”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18921:]]

Fox Studios has given the Deadpool movie the greenlight, which will see Ryan Reynolds reprise as the Merc With The Mouth.

Reynolds recently stated that Deadpool is being done the right way, and now the character’s creator, Rob Liefeld, weighs in on the movie.

“I am unable to discuss anything specific to the screenplay but I can tell you that they have created a pulse-pounding adventure with action sequences that I feared would be stolen prior to the film reaching the big screen,” Liefeld told Total Film Magazine. “They are that good. I wouldn’t champion anything less. This film is unique and will instantly become the defining Deadpool story. This is what all other Deadpool movies will be measured against.”

Liefeld also mentions that Ryan Reynolds is perfect for the part.

“Ryan Reynolds has the voice as well as the physicality that Deadpool requires,” Liefeld said. “He has that perfect, flippant attitude down pat. His limited role as part of Wolverine’s crew in Origins was fantastic. The audience loved him. Then that third act took a left turn and they didn’t maximize on Ryan’s appeal or Deadpool’s potential. I’ve never wavered in support for Ryan as Deadpool, he’s perfect.”

Speaking of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, like many of us, Liefeld wasn’t a big fan of how Deadpool was portrayed.

“I spoke to a producer who worked on that film – he is no longer associated with the franchise – who felt that Deadpool’s role was just to serve as a nemesis for Wolverine. Sewing his mouth shut and putting him in costume was ridiculous, short-sighted and limited the appeal. Thankfully, Ryan championed the spinoff film.”

“Deadpool” has a February 12, 2016 release and begins filming this March.

Review: The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18910:]]

Yet, Another Wes Anderson Film

[Continuing our 2015 Academy Award Roundup]

A Film Review of The Grand Budapest Hotel

Hollywood is rife with reboots, remakes, adaptations and re-imaginations and despite some of these projects still making enough profit across the board to continue justifying that business model, audiences have all but fully accepted that originality in La La Land is dead.  This lack of originality cannot be said of Wes Anderson and his movies as this particular writer/director has effectively invented his own sub-genre of filmmaking that I would best describe as folk-comedy.  Of course, one only needs to watch but one Wes Anderson film to understand his style and eccentricity because it is carbon copied without fail in all of his pictures.  There isn’t a lot of action, there is plenty of narration, and there are whimsical selections of background music as well as a number of select Hollywood A-Listers that are apparently at Anderson’s beck and call whenever he’s written a new film.  Wes Anderson has made a career at crafting his own films, telling his own stories and essentially answers to no one and that’s the kind of autonomy most filmmakers in Hollywood secretly covet, yet are unwilling to make the compromises required to attain it.  The Grand Budapest Hotel is a Hollywood-ish production with the heart of an Indie, but viewers beware: Wes Anderson films are acquired tastes so if your idea of comedy is Will Ferrell, please look elsewhere.

The story of The Grand Budapest follows the exploits of Gustave H, the charming, womanizing concierge of the hotel whose dedication to his post would rival a clergyman’s.  He mentors and befriends the hotel’s lobby boy, Zero and the two proceed to get entangled in a murder mystery (of sorts) of an insanely wealthy and elderly woman whom Gustave was involved with sexually.  Mind you, this whole story is also being told as a flashback from the perspective of an elderly Zero who happens to be the current owner of the hotel in what is established as the present time of the film.  What starts off as a fairly mundane drama morphs into an absurd “whodunit” featuring some improbable twists of fate to further heighten the ridiculous series of events that appears to set Gustave up as the primary culprit.  This screen story isn’t some overdressed metaphor regarding today’s society nor is it some ambiguous commentary regarding the past.  There is no hidden agenda.  It is a simple, somewhat hilarious adventure that is about friendship and the special extended family that is the circle of premium hotels and their staffs.  This is a film that ultimately relies on telling the story to the audience through narration and dialogue as opposed to showing with action.  Prepare yourselves for this fact in addition to the eccentric formality of its delivery, further enhancing the overall absurdity which is never acknowledged by the film’s characters.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is not a film one could easily argue for as being “seminal” and if that is the case, one could also easily ask why this film is even in the final 8.  What I said in my review of Boyhood regarding this year’s Indie love applies to this film as well.  Big studio losses yield smaller films’ gain and although Wes Anderson films retain the spirit of true independence, there are a number of factors that clearly elevate their status to established studio productions.  A $30 million dollar budget, distribution through Fox Searchlight and a cast that includes Ray Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Ed Norton, Tilda Swinton, Tom Wilkinson and even Owen Wilson – well, let’s just say that any Indie film would kill to have any one of these individuals, budget or distribution as part of its production.  Beyond these factors, The Grand Budapest Hotel belongs with the other nominees thanks to exceptional set design, cinematography, performances and ability to entertain.  Even if the scope of the film in question doesn’t have monumental questions about life to challenge, it doesn’t mean that simpler ideas cannot have an equally moving effect on the audience.

I mentioned earlier how the audience is in on the absurdity of this series of unfortunate events despite the ignorance of all its characters.  That’s where Wes Anderson’s sense of comedy originates, but the fact that his cast plays these events as seriously as a WW II drama (or thereabouts) is what allows the sophisticated banter throughout to not be misconstrued as a dainty passing of mere poop jokes.   Fully engaged and interested performances are had by all (including the previously mentioned A-Listers) which is essential to a Wes Anderson film.  Without this level of dedication, his movies become sub-pedestrian.  Unfortunately, the volume of big names afford little opportunity for most of them to shine within this narrative as Gustave and Zero hog most of the screen time.

Tony Revolori generates a fine performance as the eager to learn and underappreciated lobby boy, Zero.  The audience certainly is introduced to the world of The Grand Budapest through his eyes as we learn what being a true professional in the hotel business is all about, along with some helpful tips to navigate some of the other tumultuous waters in life.  His character certainly starts off being very sheepish in relation to Gustave, but his character grows and the audience can appreciate his evolution into that of a peer.  The key to Revolori’s performance is maintaining a certain level of innocence about Zero, despite his experiences and moments of self incrimination.  After all, a lobby boy must know and learn at the same time so innocence in the face of intimidation is something we can all identify with.

This film, however, is all about Ray Fiennes and his quest for Oscar vindication.  Well, perhaps that’s being a tad overzealous because if Voldemort wanted such praise, he would command it via the cruciatus curse.  Seriously though, Fiennes approaches the role of Gustave with the same level of professionalism he applied at the Royal National Theatre.  Although this character isn’t nearly as appalling as a Nazi War criminal or as intriguing as a Count desiring to be euthanized (both roles he was nominated for in Schindler’s List and The English Patient respectively), Gustave allows Fiennes an opportunity to fully engage his own, personal charm.  Gustave’s arrogance isn’t too domineering, his attention to detail isn’t too obsessive and his appetite for wealthy hags isn’t too disgusting.  They are all just enough before crossing the line into the realm of the anti-hero with the help of one other area of motivation: his religious care and dedication for the hotel establishment in his charge.  Love for one’s job or profession engenders dignity and exemplary self-worth and this elevated demeanor is masterfully maintained throughout by Fiennes and it generates a healthy amount of charisma about him.  Gustave may have invited the negative attention he receives for sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong, but the audience cannot help but sympathize for him because he really doesn’t deserve it.

Every scene in a Wes Anderson film is like a rectangle of framed art with live motion within.  Characters are constantly looking through the screen and at its audience.  Close ups are very intimate.  These scenes leave the infusion of meaning and beauty entirely in the eyes of the viewer.  This is the style of The Grand Budapest Hotel and although this film is entertaining enough featuring some excellent performances, I don’t expect this film to be a serious contender on Oscar night.  Ray Fiennes certainly has better odds at winning that elusive Oscar gold, but with very serious competition in the best leading male category from the likes of Bradley Cooper and Benedict Cumberbatch, it’s far too difficult to predict.

Michael Shannon Wearing An Aquaman T-Shirt At Sundance

If you didn’t know – Michael Shannon happens to be a big fan of Aquaman.

Shannon previously said if he could play a superhero, it would be Aquaman.

“You know who I really want to play?” Shannon said. “Aquaman. If they ever make a fucking Aquaman movie, I want to be Aquaman.”

Shannon said that over a year ago, and now the actor has been spotted at the Sundance Film Festival wearing an Aquaman t-shirt.

Jason Momoa was recently cast as Aquaman and also attended the Sundance Film Festival where Michael Shannon wearing the Aquaman t-shirt was brought up. Momoa didn’t have much to say about it other than “that’s awesome.”

Michael Shannon played Zod for Zack Snyder in Man of Steel. Various fan theories are speculating that Lex Luthor gets a hold of Zod’s body and uses the Kryptonian armor to make the Lex Luthor Warsuit from the comic books.

Jason Momoa’s Jaw Dropped When Told About Aquaman & DC Plans

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18908:]]

Jason Momoa recently attended the Sundance Film Festival where offered some information about Aquaman and the DC movie universe.

“Well, things are going to be a little different,” Momoa responded when asked what fans of the comic book can expect. “When I first went in I met with Zack [Snyder] — his idea is pretty amazing. When I went in, he told me — my jaw kind of dropped. My jaw doesn’t normally drop. What he has planned for the DC world and definitely for Aquaman is something that, you know, I think I was brought on for a certain reason, and they got some really cool plans for him. I’m really excited for everyone to see it.”

Momoa continued with mention of having to keep Aquaman a secret.

“Last year, when I was on this panel I was like eating chicken breasts and in training when I wasn’t supposed to talk about anything,” Momoa said. “I wasn’t supposed to say anything until 2016. So I told a bunch of people that they could punch me in the face if I was on it, so I’m going to get hit a couple times. But they finally released it. I was supposed to keep it a secret for 3 years.”

It’s then mentioned that Michael Shannon (Zod in Man of Steel) has been seen in town wearing an Aquaman t-shirt (Shannon previously said he wants to play f’n Aquaman), with Momoa asked, “What’s the relationship there?”

Momoa didn’t respond to the questioning, but did say “that’s awesome,” and continued talking about what he liked about Zack Snyder in that there is a new “brown” superhero as Momoa is half Polynesian.

“There is not a lot of brown superheroes. You know, I’m half Polynesian. What that is going to represent to every Islander, every brown kid that’s out there is really going to be like — it’s really cool what they are doing with that. That’s an honor to represent that,” Momoa said.

The fan portion of the QnA then sees Jason Momoa asked whether Aquaman will have a mustache and beard, as the 74-year-old fan mentions Aquaman is her “very favorite character” and she has the Aquaman #1 comic book.

“Well, just going off what you’ve seen so far ma’am, I don’t think he is going to be blonde or white. I can’t really tell you because I haven’t shot it yet. I hate to disappoint. I’m a little different than what those others. I hope you watch it with an open heart. I went to school for Marine Biology. It’s an honor to play this.”

Aquaman hits 2018.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter and Tao Okamoto in new character roles for the film. Justice League is to follow directed by Zack Snyder as well.

Joss Whedon Says “The Avengers Need To Die”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18906:]]

Bad news for The Avengers as Joss Whedon seems to be on the side of Ultron.

Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age Of Ultron comes out this May, and if Whedon’s following words are anything to go by, it’s possible at least one Avenger might not make it out alive.

“I’ve been working on a lot of Ultron scenes so I’m very anti-Avengers right now,” Whedon told Empire Magazine. “You can’t write someone if you don’t love them and I’ve come to the conclusion that Ultron is right. The Avengers need to die.”

In a previous interview, Whedon hinted that things aren’t looking good for the Avengers as he noted: “The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult.”

The same interview also saw Whedon say that in further exploring the characters in The Avengers 2, he was “twisting the knife.”

“The Avengers: Age Of Ultron” hits May 1, 2015 directed by Joss Whedon starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Paul Bettany as Vision, with James Spader as Ultron.

Elizabeth Olsen Talks Teaming With Spoiler In The Avengers 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18899:]]

It’s known that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver team with Ultron in The Avengers 2.

Empire Magazine has a featured article with Elizabeth Olsen and asks the actress how that comes about.

Obviously there are plenty of countries in the world that hate America, for whatever historical pain they believe it has caused their own country and their own lives. That is the world we have created for Wanda and Pietro, to have been brought up in. What you’re told a lot of times growing up is that that country, those people, their way of living is the reason why we have been bombed. They [The Avengers] are the worst evil in Wanda and Pietro’s mind, not this guy who hasn’t done anything yet.

Olsen also talks more about Scarlet Witch’s powers.

The extent of our powers isn’t fully explored in Ultron. But she can manipulate objects. And she has visions, and she has the ability to share them.

In the Marvel Comics, Scarlet Witch gets romantically involved with the Vision. Will it happen in the movie?

[Laughs] I don’t know what you’re talking about…

Robert Downey Jr. Explains Why Captain America 3 & Not Iron Man 4

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18898:]]

The latest issue of Empire Magazine features Robert Downey Jr. discussing Captain America: Civil War, which follows The Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

It’s learned that if Robert Downey Jr. didn’t do Captain America 3, but maybe an Iron Man 4 instead, “Civil War” would have never happened.

They said to me, ‘If we have you, we can do this, or Cap 3 has to be something else.’ It’s nice to feel needed. And at this point it’s about helping each other, too. I look at it as a competition and I go, ‘Wow, maybe if these two franchises teamed up and I can take even a lesser position, with people I like and directors I respect, maybe we can keep things bumping along.’

Robert Downey Jr. also teases the seed for Civil War is planted in The Avengers 2.

It’s natural to change your views…The main thing to me is, what sort of incident could occur, and what sort of framework could we find Tony in? The clues about where we might find him next are in Ultron. But what would it take for Tony to completely turn around everything he’s stood for? Joss brings this up all the time. It’s kind of weird that these guys would have all these throw downs all over planet Earth and yet when the movie’s over, nobody minds. What would the American government do if this were real? Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Tony doing something you wouldn’t imagine?

In the Marvel Comics Civil War storyline, Iron Man was looked at as more the villain than Captain America; however, Robert Downey Jr. offers and interesting tidbit in that it could be Steve Rogers who is the one more to change his ways than Tony Stark.

The biggest question is, for Chris and for Cap, how do we bring Cap to a place where people go, ‘Man, I never thought I would see such a vast change in Steve.’ After you see Snowpiercer, you’re like, ‘I want to see a little bit of that guy.’

“Captain America: Civil War” has a May 6, 2016 release directed by Anthony and Joe Russo starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier and Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

Josh Whedon Doubtful For The Avengers 3 & 4 Infinity War

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18897:]]

It doesn’t sound as if Joss Whedon will be back to direct The Avengers 3 or The Avengers 4, which are the Marvel Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2 movies.

Whedon, who directed The Avengers and has The Avengers: Age Of Ultron coming out in May, recently spoke with Empire Magazine where he let the news be known.

“I couldn’t imagine doing this again,” Whedon said.  “It’s enormously hard, and it be, by then, a good five years since I created anything that was completely my own.  So it’s very doubtful that I would take on the two-part Infinity War movie that would eat up the next four years of my life.  I obviously still want to be a part of the Marvel Universe – I love these guys – but it ain’t easy.  This year has been more like running three shows than any year of my life.  It is bonkers.”

With Whedon seemingly already out of the picture, it’s actually been said Captain America 2 and 3 directors Anthony and Joe Russo will be directing The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2 as leaked e-mails as a result of a Sony hack mentioned the directors involvement.

First Look At Michael B. Jordan In Fantastic Four

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18896:]]

Check out some first look images at Fantastic Four below as Fox has officially released set images featuring Michael B. Jordan, Simon Kinberg (screenwriter/producer) and director Josh Trank.

The Collider spoke with Trank and Kinberg who offered some details:

Fantastic Four looks to be about 2 hours to 2 hours and twenty minutes in length.

Regarding why the movie hasn’t been promoted just yet, Tranks defends the reasoning as he would rather have everyone see the finished product: “I’d rather show people what it looks like when it’s done.”

Trank compares FF to a David Cronberg movie and offers it’s more of a hard science-fiction reboot than a straight superhero movie.

Regarding a black Johnny Storm and a white Sue Storm, Trank offers: “I have mixed family in my own family and it’s something that isn’t out of the ordinary anymore but we don’t really see it portrayed in the casual reality of the movies.  That’s something I felt that would be interesting and challenging, to have mixed siblings.”

Kinberg says the Ultimate comics were the biggest influence from Marvel:  “Yeah, I think The Ultimates is probably our biggest influence because it’s the younger Fantastic Four.  And a lot of the science specifics are there.  And a lot of the means of transformation we took from those books. As you’ll see a little bit in the trailer and a lot in the movie, there are influences really from the beginning of what Kirby and Stan were doing in the 60’s all the way up into the present day. This is an origin story in many regards and it is inspired by The Ultimate Fantastic Four as much as anything else.”

Tranks says the Negative Zone “could be there in the movie.”

Kinberg says there are lot of Easter Eggs in the movie and one in the trailer.

Simon Kinberg confirms there are talks about a potential Fantastic Four and X-Men shared movie universe, as leaked e-mails as a result of the Sony hack stated a planned Fantastic Four and X-Men movie is underway:  “The extra challenge is that the X-Men films so far don’t acknowledge the Fantastic Four and the Fantastic Four takes place essentially in the same time period as the X-Men movies, the modern day.  So they have challenges.  But there are certainly conversations.”

“Fantastic Four” has an August 7, 2015 release directed by Josh Trank starring Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm,  Kate Mara as Sue Storm and Toby Kebbell as Victor von Doom.
