Watch: Zack Snyder Reveals Batman Vs. Superman Deleted Scenes For R-Rated Cut

The home release of Batman Vs. Superman will feature an R-rated ultimate director’s cut featuring around 30 minutes of additional footage, which is on top of the two-and-half hour long theatrical version.

Check out video below featuring Zack Snyder discussing some of the Batman Vs. Superman deleted scenes that will make their way into the R-rated version.

Snyder notes there is both a little bit of story and action they trimmed out as well as a bit of violence they were forced to cut back on to get the PG-13 rating. Some of the scenes include more of the African opening, more of Doomsday and more of the finale.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release directed by Zack Snyder starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch and Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves.

Synopsis:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Batman Vs. Superman Review

Batman!(Co-starring Superman)

A Film Review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

By Lawrence Napoli

Not even one day released to the American viewing public and the only headlines regarding this film revolve around poor receptions and dreadful reviews.  Ouch!  Is this film really that bad?  Are the fanboys being too critical?  Are the trolls having too much fun?  Is it being unfairly judged for not being absolutely spectacular?  I’d be lying to you if I didn’t admit just a hint of glee over this project’s initial, global reaction for a number of reasons: poor casting choices, using The Dark Knight Returns plot for introducing a Justice League cinematic universe and Batman upstaging Superman’s sequel (to list a few).  The details of this production had me shaking my head in absurdity light years beyond the casting of Mr. Mom as Tim Burton’s Batman back in 1989 so much so that its present day difficulties seem a foregone conclusion.

Rather than rubbing salt into open wounds, this review will be more concerned with simply critiquing what we have on the screen, and it begins with this film being Batman’s movie from the very first second to its very last.  In a way, it makes sense for the story to be so Bat-centric because “this” version of the Dark Knight has not yet been established in this particular cinematic universe.  It is more than just the plot featuring Batman or its themes, framework or even the outcome that makes it so.  The feel, sound and look of this entire film are “Batman” through and through.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this tactic outside of the cost of sacrificing every other character and their subplots as window dressing to Batman’s mission.  As such, Superman is all but designated as a formal antagonist if the story weren’t also interested in introducing the audience to the Justice League as well as a major tease for a destined conflict against one of DC’s Ultimate Evils in subsequent films.  The fact is that this story is so much more than just Batman and Superman that it crumbles under the weight of its own lofty ambitions.  This leads to a bit of distraction and incoherence which requires the viewer to make frequent leaps of faith to traverse the plot holes.

Then there’s the pacing of this movie which does a fine job at mimicking the overall flow and tenor of Man of Steel.  We start off pretty slow as Zack Snyder clearly makes conscious efforts at establishing intrigue.  But then, the film stays at that same tempo because we need a ton of exposition fed to us in order to appreciate what is going on thanks to advancing the plot more than a year past the destruction of Metropolis at the hands of Zod.  With little screen time left to build upon any drama or suspense, the burden falls squarely on action sequences to break things up and sometimes they get the job done.  It’s neat seeing Batman drive his car, fly his plane and beat up (and kill) bad guys.  [Yes, this Batman kills – more on that later]  Unfortunately, Batman isn’t Superman; meaning those awesome Dragonball Z live-action combat sequences from Man of Steel are nowhere to be found in this film, not even during the climactic battle against a conveniently placed plot device.

I understand that Zack Snyder is essentially doing the same thing as the competition, but trying so desperately to differentiate by doubling down on the gravitas.  These films may not be taking place in a Chris Nolan reality, but there is no denying the tone of seriousness here.  I for one am all for making these blockbusters as poignant as any art house, indie obscurity.  However, the fun factor should not be hunted down and eradicated like some Thanagarian Snare Beast.  No one needs to tell this production staff about the importance of finding the right balance between gravity and levity so you can all be assured that the next DC film, Suicide Squad, will be layered with silliness as a counterweight, but hopefully not too much.

Action Style

When the action happens, it is captured quite well featuring some extremely diverse Batman combat both inside and out of vehicles.  Meta-beings are relegated to flying at stuff, punching stuff and eye beams.

5/6

Action Frame

Fairly static camera setups for dialogue scenes and much more animated during combat.  Better than average.

3/5

Lead Performance

Batfleck wasn’t terrible, but he might have been if he had to “act” his own, gruff “Bat-voice” instead of relying on sound filters.  Henry Cavil is just plain solid, and I am pained that he’s totally overshadowed in this film.  Both men put in the serious wrench time at the gym for these parts.  Speaking of overshadowed: Amy Adams is superb, but did anyone really care?

4/6

Supporting Performance

Gal Gadot has the right presence for WW, but is basically as skinny as she has been for Fast and Furious films.  Michael Shannon surpasses himself playing a cadaver of the character he played in Man of Steel.  But Jesse Eisenberg produces a whimpering, erratic shell of some character meant to be Lex Luthor – not unlike many of the characters he’s made a Hollywood career by playing.  Also, Jeremy Irons’ Alfred was WAY too sarcastic for me.

1/5

Music

The quality echoed by the iconic theme music of The Dark Knight Trilogy normally gives Hans Zimmer an A+ when it comes to music, but then I heard his theme for Wonder Woman.  Ugh!  Also, not enough Superman’s theme is featured in this film.

2/6

Sound F/X

Fake Batman voices are to be preferred to whatever Batfleck would have come up with.  Thank you audio effects.  Thank you.

3/5

“Moving” = 18/33

Digital F/X

The CGI within this film is text book for pristine excellence for a Hollywood production of this budget.  A full point is deducted for the not so inspired monster design of Doomsday being a gray, Ninja Turtle, knockoff.

5/6

Special F/X

Explosions are solid as is gunfire and bleeding effects.  Practical effects shine during the Bruce Wayne charging into Metropolis sequence.

3/5

Costumes

I wasn’t in love with Superman’s suit in the first film, but it has grown on me.  Batman’s suit is great from the neck down.  Lex Luthor’s apparel is fitting for a genius tweaker who couldn’t be bothered by the concept of “respectable attire.”

4/6

Hair & Makeup

Neither exceptional nor horribly out of place.

3/5

Exteriors

Kent farm exteriors were perfect.  Cityscapes (only slightly) less so.

4/6

Interiors

I must say that I was impressed by this iteration of the Bat Cave.

4/5

“Picture” = 23/33

Hook

Batman sees first-hand what the damage of meta-humans can do to a city of mere Earthlings and feels mankind may need to go to war with Superman to survive.

3/4

Conflict

So the world’s greatest detective would not have thoroughly explored all avenues, investigated all the players and exhausted every last resource before forcing a physical confrontation with a god?  If he did, he would not have been played so easily by the bad guys.

1/4

Resolution

Batman and Superman just formally met, so to witness this contrived mutual respect they suddenly upgrade to is ridiculous.

1/4

Dialogue

I sometimes hear Daredevil narration when Batman speaks.  Superman easily has the best lines if for any other reason he isn’t flapping his lips all the time.  Every line of dialogue for Luthor equates to ear rot.

3/6

Exposition

The audience gets just enough to comprehend what’s happening in this film only and absolute zero for everything that happened off screen in the time immediately after Man of Steel.  Also, these scenes aren’t blended particularly well with the action to help with the pacing.

2/5

Character Uniqueness

Superman kills.  Batman kills.  And Lex Luthor is a tool.  These are all certainly unique takes on these particular characters historically, but also demonstrates a fundamental disconnect with the cores of who they are.  If Superman kills, his principles are no longer his greatest strength.  If Batman kills, his ironclad will and excellence of execution and preparation is rusted.  If Luthor has no backbone, no level of intelligence or resources will ever make him a viable threat because above all else, he is defined by his own hubris.

1/6

Character Relatability

Amazingly enough, I relate to Superman the best in this film because despite his amazing abilities he isn’t trying to lord anything over anyone and is really just trying to do the right thing the best way he can.  I’d understand Batman’s perspective if it were based on something more than vengeance.   I have no motivation to relate to Luthor as I mentally switch him off whenever he’s onscreen.

2/5

“Story” = 13/34

Overall MPS Rating:  54/100

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is an average blockbuster.  It wasn’t atrocious, nor was it anything spectacular, but apparently that’s enough for its crucifixion.  An unfocused story combined with questionable casting and inconsistent performances demonstrate major weaknesses for perhaps one of the most hyped and anticipated film fictions of all time.  The expectations were clearly impossible to satisfy, but one film attempting to do so much in a mere 2.5 hours was all but inviting disaster.  A simpler story focusing on an introduction between Batman and Superman and how their credos differ in almost every way would have been more than enough to fill out a full time slot.  Then again, what made this plot work in The Dark Knight Returns is the fact that these two characters had a long history of conflict and disagreement that built up to a direct physical confrontation which clearly doesn’t fit in Batman v Superman.  Simply put, this was not the fiction to rip-off to launch this new generation of heroes, and that is Zack Snyder’s fault.  Taking a risk by inventing a brand new framework for licensed characters is not something indicative of a Snyder production.  His history is adaptation through emulation and that brief stint with originality gifted us all with Sucker Punch.  Need I say more?

The Batman Vs. Superman Cameo Discussion: Aquaman, Flash & Cyborg

Obvious SPOILERS follow for Batman Vs. Superman.

Note: It’s already been announced numerous times that Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher are going to appear in the movie, so that part is not a spoiler.

That said, now let’s discuss the Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg cameos.

Lex Luthor has a file on metahumans that contains info on Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman. Bruce Wayne tries to steal it, but Diana Prince ends up stealing Batman’s device first; however, she can’t break the encryption, so she ends up giving it back to Bruce Wayne, who uses the Batcave computer to decrypt it. Diana Prince wanted the file because it contains an image of herself from 100 years ago (check out the pic here).

Bruce Wayne ends up giving the file to Diana who looks through it, and that’s where we get the second Flash cameo, Aquaman and Cyborg.

Aquaman

Jason Momoa’s Aquaman cameo wasn’t as good as The Flash or Cyborg. Actually, I wasn’t quite sure what was going on with it, other than the military(?) was investigating a possible downed ship. When the camera (drone?) came to the ship, Aquaman came out of the hole and used his Trident to destroy the camera-drone. Was more referenced in this scene? I may have missed it.

Cyborg

Cyborg’s was pretty wild. We didn’t get that football scene that Zack Snyder was said to have filmed way back in October. I believe Perry and Clark made reference to it a couple times. I’m guessing Ray Fisher may have been involved, but it looks to have gotten cut. Anyway, maybe it had nothing to do with Cyborg, but the scene showed half of Cyborg’s body up on a wall attached to equiment at Star Labs. Was that his father? Some guy was trying to revive him, but initially couldn’t(?). Then he used some sort of tech (Kryptonian?) that bonded to Cyborg and gave him his metal parts. Honestly, I thought it was a larger Tesseract from Avengers (lol). Cool scene. Update: The tech is confirmed as a Mother Box, and Joe Morton plays Silas Stone.

The Flash

Fans have been pretty much upset that Grant Gustin isn’t The Flash in the DCCU. Snyder said some BS about Gustin not fitting in in the Justice League universe. Okay, whatever. I felt Ezra Miller made an impressive debut. He actually had two cameos. He communicated to a sleeping Bruce Wayne that Bruce is right about him all along (Superman? we’re not sure). The Flash tells Bruce that Lois is the key; to watch out for her or something like that. This reminded me a lot of the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game: Lois dies and Superman goes bad. That was the feeling I was getting here.

Regarding The Flash costume (people are already going nuts on our Facebook), the costume was an armored version. I felt The Flash needed the armor to protect him from travelling where ever he was travelling to/from. I also thought maybe this Flash might have the armor to protect himself whenever he goes ultra-fast. The last episode of The Flash TV series saw Trajectory run too fast and disappear, maybe the Ezra Miller Flash was protecting himself from something similar. We also know this probably isn’t the final Flash costume as Zack Snyer teased a different version (at least I think as much).

The Flash Cameo #2

This is another part of the Diana Prince scene where she is watching the Lex file. It shows Barry in a convenient store buying some milk when the store gets robbed. Barry moves as quick as a flash and stops the robbery! What I thought was cool about the scene was that Barry seemed to move faster than the camera. Barry didn’t really “disappear” from camera #1 — he seemed to move too fast that it appeared as if he was in two places at once! Now that’s fast! Zoom who?!

What are your thoughts? Let is know in the comments below or on Facebook.

Gal Gadot Talks Wonder Woman Vs. Doomsday In Batman Vs. Superman

Wonder Woman Gal Gadot happens to be the big draw for audiences in Batman Vs. Superman.

The LA Times caught up with Gal Gadot prior to her big debut tomorrow (and tonight) where she discussed battling Doomsday and more.

You know Wonder Woman, she’s amazing. I love everything that she represents and everything that she stands for. She’s all about love and compassion and truth and justice and equality and she’s a whole lot of woman. For me, it was important that people can relate to her. Being all that, I wanted her not to be too, ah, “goody two shoes.” I wanted her to have this attitude. I wanted her to have a smirk when she fights Doomsday. I didn’t want her to be too polished. I wanted to make her a little bit darker, a little bit dirtier. In the sense that, yes, she’s still all of these amazing things. But she’s been around, she’s very experienced and she has her own fight.

On the scene where Wonder Woman smiles while battling Doomsday:

I did that. I remember after we did that take, Zack came to me and he said, “Did you just have a smirk?” I said “Yeah.” And he asked, “Why? I think I like it, but why?” “Well if he’s gonna mess with her, then she’s gonna mess with him. And she knows she’s gonna win.” At the end of the day Wonder Woman is a peace seeker. But when fight arrives, she can fight. She’s a warrior and she enjoys the adrenaline of the fight.

Gal Gadot also mentions the difference between the Wonder Woman we’ll see in Batman Vs. Superman and the Wonder Woman in the 2017 Patty Jenkins standalone movie.

There’s only so much I can say. But … the Wonder Woman you’re going to see in “Batman v Superman” is a very different Wonder Woman that you will see in the standalone movie. The Wonder Woman that you see in “Batman v Superman” is a woman who has been around, and she’s very experienced. She understands a lot about man. Whereas in the standalone movie we are telling the grown-up story. Diana becoming Wonder Woman, and this was a story that was never told before. When she starts this journey, she’s very pure. She’s more naive, she’s this young idealist who does not really understand the complexities of life and the complexities of men.

Two new Wonder Woman movie images have been released: one a WWI photo with Chris Pine and the other features Gal Gadot with the Amazons.

I’m going to see Batman Vs. Superman tonight, so I’m going to wait until after to read some of those reviews.

That said, I tweeted this earlier:

The cast of Batman Vs. Superman also weighs in on the negative reviews. Yahoo caught up with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Zack Snyder and Amy Adams. Watch the video below for more.

Henry Cavill:

The interesting thing is that we get the critics who have their personal opinions. And the thing about personal opinions is that they always come from a place. And there’s a preconceived idea which you have to get past a critic before you start writing your article or your review, and that affects everything.

What is really going to matter, I believe, is what the audience says. Because they’re the ones who are buying tickets, they’re the ones who want to see more of this kind of story or not and so the audience’s voice is loudest and after this weekend the audience, at least partly, will have spoken.

Ben Affleck:

I agree.

Amy Adams:

I know that Zack [Snyder] doesn’t make the movies – or none of us – are making the movies for the critics. You can’t go into it with that perspective. I know we really hope the fans like it and so far the reaction has been really positive on that front.

If you’re interested in a film you should see it and form your own opinion rather than just going on the word of somebody [else].

Zack Snyder:

I’m a comic book guy and I made the movie based as much as I could on that aesthetic. And so I don’t know how else to do it 100%, so it is what it is.

First Look At Amazons In Wonder Woman Movie

A new Wonder Woman image has been released featuring a first look at the Amazons.

We see Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Diana’s mother, Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), and her two aunts General Antiope (Robin Wright) and Antiope’s lieutenant, Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli).

“Themyscira is influenced by the Greek but it’s clearly more then that,” producer Charles Roven told EW.com. “It’s a place that has the ‘you’ve never been to’ kind of feel. But once you’re there you’re not so sure you really want to leave so fast.”

“To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men,” director Patty Jenkins said. “It should be different. It should be authentic and real—and appealing to women.”

Earlier, we also posted a first look at Gal Gadot and Chris Pine in a WW1 image.

Gal Gadot makes her debut this week in Batman Vs. Superman.

Wonder Woman has a June 23, 2017 release directed by Patty Jekins also starring Chris Pine as Steve Trevor.

Watch: Zack Snyder Talks Justice League Movie Title & Production Schedule

Following Batman Vs. Superman, Zack Snyder goes on to direct Justice League, which begins filming April 11th in the UK.

Collider caught up with Snyder in the following video to get his thoughts on the possible official Justice League title and production schedule.

Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash and Ray Fisher as Cyborg.

Here’s the text:

Right now the working title is Justice League. Actually, I’m in that phase where I’ve been drawing logos and I’ve been drawing title treatments and stuff like that to try and figure out what it means, what Justice League is, visually, so we’ll see if the name evolves with this visual presentation.

The schedule’s close, it’s not quite as long, but give or take. We have a more efficient machine in England because we have a big backlot that we built for Gotham and Metropolis, so it’ll be easier to photograph than when you have to close down streets. But it’s a beautiful backlot.

The Batman v Superman logo I drew so long ago. I know there’s versions of it that existed anyway, but that one in particular I [drew]. The thing that’s kinda cool about the Batman suit [and] our Batman logo is that the dimension is the same as the Man of Steel logo, the bottom of the bat. So I said, “No, it’s cool. It’s okay. It’s mythologically okay.”
