Minecraft Sequel In Development: Box Office Smashes $200M: Second Weekend Expected Big

As A Minecraft Movie smashes $200M at the domestic box office, similar to its first weekend, it’s expected to blow by the estimates and have a big second weekend.

Warner Bros. also confirms a sequel is in early development.

Blows by $200M domestically

On Thursday, A Minecraft Movie brought home another $7.1M which passed the $200M mark at the domestic box office.

Second weekend estimates up

Estimates for the second weekend were originally around $65M for a 60% drop. However, those estimates have been revised due to the rabid fandom showing up on Friday.

The estimates now offer A Minecraft Movie will bring in over $80M in weekend #2 for around a 51% drop.

Compared to Super Mario and Barbie

The flick has been compared to both Super Mario and Barbie, both event movies, as A Minecraft Movie actually outperformed those billion-dollar films in its opening weekend. However, during the week, things dipped a bit for Minecraft, but it’s still right up there (see the box office numbers below).

Super Mario brought in $92.3M in its second weekend for a 36.9% drop. Barbie brought in $93M for a 42.6% drop.

Who knows? Maybe A Minecraft Movie will perform even better as social media is lit up with all those crazy reaction videos. The cops have even been called, and movie theater employees are crying about clean up (lol).

Minecraft sequel

It’s also known Warner Bros is currently finalizing the deal for a Minecraft sequel.

“Imminently. The ink might not be dry on the deals yet, but imminently,” said WB co-chairman and CEO Mike De Luca about the Minecraft sequel in a recent interview with Deadline, adding, “They executed Minecraft flawlessly, and we’re really excited about the future with the team we have.”

Co-chairman/CEO Pam Abdy explained how they got the film off the ground:

Minecraft, the rights were about to lapse, we learned in one of our first meetings with producer Roy Lee. He talked to us about Minecraft, we dove into it, we read it. We got excited by it and recognized what Jesse Ehrman had been trying to do for years alongside Legendary. And then we all made the film. I just want to say like Mike is saying, we’re not sitting in some tower, rubber-stamping stuff. Mike and I, we’re producers. We all creatively work together. We show up at every test screening. We read every script. We’re in the cutting room. We do everything collaboratively with our filmmakers and with our producers. Filmmaking is not a singular achievement by one person. It is an achievement by many people, and everybody deserves to get applauded when something works and when it doesn’t work, that happens too. You can’t blame Mike and I for Joker 2, and then not give us credit for Minecraft at the same time.
