‘A Minecraft Movie’ Exploding At Box Office: $157M

'A Minecraft Movie' Explodes At Box Office

A Minecraft Movie is the new event movie to watch in theaters. The flick is currently exploding at the box office and blowing away all estimates and expectations.

My 17-year-old literally just got home who went to see Minecraft with a bunch of his buddies. They all grew up playing the game. Like many of the millions who disliked that first-released trailer, they were on the fence before going to see the movie, and they especially weren’t sold on Jack Black as Steve.

However, once they got into the movie, everything changed as – if you have seen any of the clips on social media – the crowd is very active all throughout the movie. “It’s a meme movie,” he told me.

Opening weekend box office estimates

Sunday update: A Minecraft Movie is now expected to bring in $157 million domestically, $144 million from foreign grosses, for a worldwide gross of $301 million. The number will be the best opening for a video game adaptation and beats Super Mario. It’s also the best opening of 2025.

Previously from Saturday:

Opening weekend estimates in the U.S. are $145M+ (revised from $135M+) , while just a couple weeks ago, they were less than half of that.

I also previously questioned how well A Minecraft Movie was going to do based on early ticket sales, which were in the gutter. However, what happened is that A Minecraft Movie got a lot of walk-ups.

Minecraft brought in $10.55M on Thursday, with $58M for Friday, which includes those Thursday preview numbers. That’s a better number than Super Mario‘s Friday, which brought in $146.3M for its opening 3-day weekend and went on to finish with $1.3 billion worldwide.

Worldwide, A Minecraft Movie is looking like a $260M+ debut, with around $125M from foreign grosses so far.

Rotten Tomatoes

The critics sure aren’t holding this one back. While they tore into A Minecraft Movie giving it only a 49% Rotten Tomatoes Score, the fan score is completely different at 87%, which while not great isn’t too bad a number though nowhere near as good as Super Mario‘s 95% fan score. The critics also only have Super Mario a 59%.

CinemaScore

The CinemaScore is also in and is only a “B+” which isn’t that good of a rating. Super Mario received an “A” CinemaScore for comparison. I suppose the scores don’t matter on this one as long as people keep filling the seats.
