Warner Bros. and Mojang have officially revealed the title for the Minecraft sequel, and it’s not just A Minecraft Movie 2.
The follow-up is titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, with the announcement coming in a new set video from New Zealand featuring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Kirsten Dunst, Jared Hess, and Mojang Studios’ Jens Bergensten.
The sequel is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027. Watch the video below.
Jack Black And Jason Momoa Return From The Set
The video opens with Jack Black and Jason Momoa back on the set of the sequel, with Black returning as Steve and Momoa back as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison.
“We’re so excited to be back here in beautiful New Zealand shooting the sequel to A Minecraft Movie,” Black says in the video.
Momoa adds that the production is still “mostly top secret,” but the cast wanted to give fans “a little glimpse” at what they’re working on.
The video also shows Matt Berry, who jokes that he can’t reveal who he is playing yet. IMDb currently lists Berry among the sequel’s cast along with Black, Momoa, Kirsten Dunst, Jennifer Coolidge, and Danielle Brooks.
A Minecraft Movie Squared Gets Its Title
The title reveal plays out as a bit between Black and Momoa.
Momoa says the two have been fighting over who gets to announce the official title and claims he won. Before he can finish, the video cuts to TommyInnit and Quackity, who hijack the announcement and reveal the footage of the title.
The sequel is officially called A Minecraft Movie Squared.
Kirsten Dunst Revealed As Alex
The video then cuts back to Black and Momoa, who knock on a door and reveal Kirsten Dunst as Alex.
“Kirsten Dunst is Alex, everyone,” Black says.
Dunst appears briefly in the video and tells fans, “We’ll see you in theaters next summer.”
Alex is one of the most recognizable default player characters from the Minecraft game, so this is a major addition for the sequel. Dunst joining the movie also lines up with earlier reports that she had joined the cast for Minecraft 2.
New Biomes, Characters, And Mobs Teased
Danielle Brooks also appears in the video and says the sequel is taking fans “so much deeper into the Minecraft world.”
She teases new biomes, new characters, and new mobs, along with returning favorites, including creepers.
Minecraft Build Challenge Lets Fans Get In The Movie
Director Jared Hess also appears with Mojang Studios chief creative officer Jens Bergensten to announce the Minecraft Build Challenge.
Bergensten says the winning build will appear in the movie or in the end credits. Finalists will also get private screenings.
“All you need to do is create something awesome in a custom map,” Bergensten says.
He also says four biomes tied to the movie have been selected to inspire the builds. After finalists are picked, the community will vote on the winner. A cape will also be up for grabs.
The First Movie Was A Box Office Monster
The sequel comes after A Minecraft Movie became one of the biggest films of 2025.
Box Office Mojo lists the first movie with $424 million domestic and $960 million worldwide, with a reported $150 million budget.
So it’s no surprise Warner Bros. and Mojang are moving fast. The first movie turned Minecraft into a massive theatrical franchise, helped by Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and the viral fan reaction around the movie.
Now A Minecraft Movie Squared is bringing back the big names, adding Kirsten Dunst as Alex, and giving fans a shot to have their own build appear in the film.
A Minecraft Movie Squared gets released July 23, 2027.
