The Venom 3 box office is currently bombing, at least domestically, as the box office is coming well under the estimates which have been all over the place.
Just ten days ago estimates offered Venom 3 could open to as high as $100 million or as low as $70 million. The first Venom opened to $80M, and Let There Be Carnage to $90M.
Well, Venom: The Last Dance is opening to only $52 million, a franchise low and pretty much half that of Let There Be Carnage.
Monday update: Venom: The Last Dance domestic box office is actually lower at $51 million. The worldwide box office is also lower at $175 million.
Thursday previews at $8M
The Thursday preview numbers were actually decent, said to be $8 million but likely that was frontloaded by the hardcore fans.
For comparison, Let There Be Carnage had $11.6 million for its Thursday previews (and again opened to $90M), so it’s possible Let There Be Carnage left a bad taste in moviegoers’ mouths.
Both Black Adam ($7.6M) and Fast X ($7.5M) also brought in less on their Thursday but opened to higher numbers with $67M each. So that shows Venom 3 has suffered a big drop off.
Word-of-mouth an important factor
It’s as I said, fans are waiting to hear if the movie is any good before dropping their hard earned dollars. Going to the movies ain’t cheap. Word-of-mouth is an important factor.
Venom: The Last Dance has a franchise low 79% from fans on Rotten Tomatoes, a score that isn’t good for a comic book flick. Venom: The Last Dance also has a “B-” CinemaScore, lower than the “B+” for the other two movies, which shows fans aren’t too thrilled with the third movie.
As I went over in my review, there are some cool things about Venom 3 but there are a lot of bad things. I rated the flick a 5/10. You can also rate Venom 3 on our new fan review site, Stinky Garbage.
Venom 3 doing well internationally
While Venom 3 is suffering domestically, it’s doing well in foreign markets where the Venom movies have been successful. The first Venom brought in $642M internationally of its $856M worldwide gross. $269M of that came from China. Let There Be Carnage happened to get banned in China. The flick had a $506M worldwide gross: $213.5M domestic and $293M international.
Venom 3 has brought in $72.8M internationally and has a Chinese release where it’s estimated to bring in $45M this weekend. While Venom 3 won’t likely have the first movie’s numbers in China, it will at least offset the low U.S. box office.
The Venom: The Last Dance foreign gross is estimated to open to around $130M, and around $180M worldwide. Monday update: Foreign gross is at $124M; worldwide at $175M.
