Tom Holland Only Returning To Spider-Man If It Does 'Justice To The Character'

Spider-Man 4 might not be a done deal, at least with Tom Holland, as the actor says he will only return to the role if it does the character justice.

Sony and Marvel have both said Spider-Man 4 is in the works and rumors offer the flick will in part lay the foundation for Avengers: Secret Wars. It’s also been said Spider-Man 4 may connect the MCU to Sony’s Spidey spinoff universe which features Tom Hardy as Venom, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven, and Morbius and Madame Web.

Tom Holland appeared at a recent press conference with the Critics Choice Association and addressed a Marvel return (via Collider).

“All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character,” Holland explained. “Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing.”

He continued, “I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”

“If we can figure that out, I would be a fool not to put the suit back on again because I owe everything to Spider-Man,” he said. “I love the character and the people I get to work with. So, I would love to tell another story, but I’ll only tell it if we can find the right one.”

Spider-Man 4 on its way

While Tom Holland back for Spider-Man 4 doesn’t sound like a done deal, rumors offer Holland will be back along with Zendaya, with rumors also offering Holland will be in Avengers: Secret Wars.

The film doesn’t have a release date as of yet, but back in February, Kevin Feige said it’s on its way.

“All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now,” confirmed Feige.

Back in December of 2022 also saw Tom Rothman, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, confirm Spider-Man 4 is happening, but similar to Feige, didn’t have specifics.

“You bet,” Rothman said. “When you can expect it, I don’t know. Serve no wine before it’s time.”
