Tom Hardy is setting the record straight regarding comments made about his Venom potentially crossing over with Spider-Man.
After previously appearing to suggest that a Venom and Spider-Man crossover nearly happened but was killed by studio politics, the actor now says he never actually said that.
While speaking with THR about MobLand, Hardy blames the confusion on a misquote, clarifying that while the crossover “almost” happened, it wasn’t shot down by behind-the-scenes drama at the studio (Sony)—it just didn’t materialize.

What did Tom Hardy say about the Venom vs Spider-Man crossover?
THR brought up Hardy’s previous comments, pointing out he said Venom pairing with the Tom Holland Spider-Man in a movie was killed by studios politics and asked if he was behind the idea of a crossover or if Marvel Studios was, but Hardy responded and denied the claims:
I didn’t say that, at all. That’s kind of moved on from a very simple quote that I said specifically about my children watching Venom. It’s hard to explain to a young child why their favorite superheroes can’t be in a film together and that’s such a shame. And we almost got it, but it didn’t happen, which is the truth. It didn’t happen. And we almost got together because I remember being in the Spider-Man movie and you know it was connected, and it just didn’t happen. The trilogy is now over and it didn’t happen. So, it didn’t get killed by anything, it just didn’t happen.
He continued and said he was actually misquoted:
I’ve been misquoted there. People get excited about anything Venom or anything to do with superheroes and stuff and it’s sort of taken on another life. I just want to be clear that I didn’t say that.

What did Tom Hardy previously say?
While appearing on the Bingewortthy TV Podcast, it was reported by The Playlist that Tom Hardy admitted there were conversations and suggested studio politics were the culprit.
“We got close. We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun. And for all the reasons that you explained ultimately in there (he continued, alluding to the politick question).”
Hardy also went over why he wanted to do the crossover, as the interviewer said his kids were asking why it never happened:
“Fundamentally, for me, it would be for the kids. Because, you know, as much as adults love superhero films, as you can tell by the box office when they’re successful, I think I’m constantly reminded by children how important these characters are. And they don’t know why their favorite characters aren’t in films together.”
While Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man and all the Spidey-related characters, such as Venom, Spider-Man is currently on loan to Marvel Studios as part of the MCU. Hardy admitted he was given limitations about what he could do:
“We were given a set of boundaries, and we were just really privileged to be able to play with a much-beloved IP like Venom in a way that we were allowed to play. And in that [regard], we did what we could and what we loved doing. We poured all of ourselves into it within the remits of what we were allowed to do with him. And so the enjoyment of the work outweighed the limits of our possibilities with him because we just focused on what we were allowed to do. And we loved doing it.”

What’s next for Venom?
What’s next for Venom is unknown as Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff universe is reportedly over. Hardy has said he is done with the Venom role. Kraven the Hunter also recently bombed big time at the box office, worse than Madame Web. It’s speculated some sort of Marvel reboot will be happening at Sony possibly focusing on Spider-Man variant characters and not the related characters.

What’s next for Spider-Man?
What’s next for Spider-Man is that Tom Holland is returning for Spider-Man 4 titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Filming starts soon for its July 31, 2026 release date. Sadie Sink is starring in the movie along with Zendaya.
Tom Holland and Spider-Man are also expected to appear in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
