If you thought things were looking bad for Kraven the Hunter after its box office projections, buckle up—it’s far worse than anyone ever imagined.
Venom: A Franchise in Decline
Sony’s Marvel division has been plagued by flop after flop, and fans aren’t holding back.
The studio’s latest misfire is Venom 3, which bombed with $472 million worldwide—marking the franchise’s lowest performance, even with a release in China. For comparison, Tom Hardy’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage managed $506 million, not that much better, while the original Venom nearly hit $900 million. What happened? Audiences agree: the movies simply don’t deliver.
Madame Web and Morbius: More Disappointments
Before Venom 3, Sony dropped Madame Web, which crawled to just $100 million globally. Critics and fans alike were left questioning how such an uninspired movie even made it to theaters. And let’s not forget Morbius, the punchline of comic book cinema (it’s Morbin’ time!), which scraped together $167 million while laughingly using Michael Keaton’s Batman theme. Seriously, WTF?
Kraven the Hunter: Another Predicted Flop
Now, all eyes are on Kraven the Hunter, and it’s already shaping up to be another box office disaster. Sony has already released the first 8 minutes online. Early projections have the film opening at $20-25 million—best case. Worst case? It could debut as low as $13 million, which would be even lower than Madame Web.
Complete Disaster at CCXP
But here’s the real kicker: Sony promoted Kraven at Brazil’s massive CCXP event this past weekend, a convention attended by hundreds of thousands of fans. And yet, nobody showed up.
No, seriously—nobody. According to The Wrap, Sony held a surprise panel for Kraven, and it “played to rows of empty seats.” Adding insult to injury, none of the film’s stars, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, were brought to the event. It seems Sony has already cut its losses, saving marketing dollars for what they know is a doomed release.
Fewer Theaters, Fewer Expectations
The Wrap also reported that Kraven will screen in significantly fewer theaters than previous Sony Marvel movies—roughly 25% fewer. That’s a thousand fewer locations, signaling the studio’s fading confidence in their floundering Marvel experiment.
Future Projects: A Shift Back to Spider-Man
Sony hasn’t announced any new Marvel movies, and rumors of a Sinister Six, Silver Sable and Black Cat (rumored for Spider-Man 4), or El Muerto movie seem dead in the water. The studio appears to be pivoting back to focusing on Spider-Man, collaborating with Marvel Studios, and developing the third Spider-Verse animated film. They’re also working on Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir series for Amazon Prime Video.
It’s no wonder Sony’s Marvel division failed. Even when they had Spider-Man, they couldn’t get it right. Amazing, eh?
