Rob Liefeld Says A PG-13 Deadpool Is A “Waste Of Effort”

Deadpool Trailer

A petition has recently launched online to get a PG-13 rated version of the Deadpool movie as some soccer mom’s kid complained about the fact he can’t go see it. Worth a mention: The petition doesn’t want to change the rating, just make a second “safer” version of the film available.

Well, I do recall Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller were pretty adamant about wanting an R-rated version of Deadpool made, as that’s true to the character. Actually, that was even one of the issues Fox Studios had with the movie and why they didn’t initally green light the project, as Fox thought an R-rated superhero movie wouldn’t do that well at the box office. Obviously things changed when the Deadpool test footage leaked a while back as the footage went viral, which inevitably caused Fox to change their minds.

Now Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has shared his thoughts about the PG-13 petition and thinks it’s a waste of time.

“Waste of effort. Movie is R,” Liefeld tweeted.

Liefeld also attended the surprise Deadpool screening last night and offered it’s even better the second time around.

“2nd time I’ve seen Deadpool but the 1st with an audience and the response was tremendous! A few more weeks everyone!” Liefled said.

I’ll also throw in my two cents: I’ll be taking my two sons to see Deadpool, which actually will mark their first R-rated movie. I guess it’s up to the parent to decide what they want their kids to see, but I don’t see them getting too scarred from watching it (lol). I mean, watching Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders debate is scary enough, no?

Rob Liefeld Wants Jon Hamm To Play Cable

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23747:]]

With the X-Force movie looking like it got shelved, worry not as there is still New Mutants and Deadpool as possible movies that could feature Cable.

So who should play the time-travelling mutant?

Cable creator Rob Liefeld weighed in on Twitter and recommended Jon Hamm.

“Yes! Jon Hamm, Dream Future Cable pick, wins for Mad Men!” Liefeld tweeted.

As noted, Jon Hamm just won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama for Mad Men.

Regarding the future of Cable in the X-Men movie universe, Deadpool director Tim Miller all but confirmed Cable for the sequel.

“There aren’t really many definitive Deadpool villains, apart from Cable,” Miller told Empire Magazine. “If we don’t put Cable in Deadpool 2 I think we’ll be run out of town on a rail.”

X-Men New Mutants Movie On The Way

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20532:]]

It’s learned Fox Studios is making a new X-Men standalone spinoff movie with New Mutants, which will have Josh Boone as director.

Deadline reports, similar to its comic book counterpart, New Mutants introduces a new crop of mutant characters born with special powers.

Boone will co-writing the project with Knate Gwaltney, and Simon Kinberg will produce along with X-Men staple Lauren Shuler Donner.

Josh Boone was responsible for last year’s smash hit The Fault in Our Stars, which grossed over $300 million on a $12 million budget.

Boone was also said to be a contender for the Marvel/Sony live-action Spider-Man reboot. Boone is supposed to direct The Vampire Chronicles next for Universal followed by The Stand; the article mentions New Mutants looks to be a few years away.

“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe,” Simon Kinberg said. “And so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”

In addition to New Mutants, Simon Kinberg and Fox are currently filming X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool; a sequel to The Wolverine is in the works with James Mangold and Hugh Jackman, and a Gambit movie is being planned starring Channing Tatum. Fantastic Four hits this Summer as well.

The fan-favorite Marvel Comics character Cable is a part of the New Mutants as is Deadpool and Domino. Comic book creator Rob Liefeld, who introduced the characters on the team in 1989, offered some enthusiastic tweets about the New Mutants movie. It should be noted it’s unclear if the New Mutants movie will be based on Liefeld’s best-selling run.

Rob Liefeld Addresses Deadpool Movie & R-Rating

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19902:]]

Ryan Reynolds just announced that Deadpool will be Rated-R in a super cool video.

Now Deadpool creator and comic book writer and artist Rob Liefeld has taken to his Instagram page to offer the following.

Check it out below.

“Deadpool” has a February 12, 2016 release directed by Tim Miller starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, TJ Miller, Ed Skrein and Gina Carano.

Congrats to Team Deadpool on each and every victory along the Deadpool highway! The R rating ensures the film will be unique and faithful to the amazing vision of the filmakers Tim Miller, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and Ryan freakin’ Reynolds!! DEADPOOL RANT….So you’re thinking, “of course Liefeld, you brought Deadpool to life, what else are we to expect but you to cheer, homer.” Let’s get something straight, after Wolverine:Origins I went on the apology tour, for those many umpteen thousands of you who came up to me at the bazillion conventions I do and asked me “Hey, Liefeld, what did you think of Deadpool in Wolverine:Origins?” you saw me smile through gritted teeth and give a very deliberate response “Well, it’s a good start..” Because I already knew that there were plans underway to restore Deadpool and that given the opportunity, the new team that Ryan was assembling would produce the film we all wanted. But I knew that I couldn’t apologize twice, I couldn’t smile through gritted teeth any longer, this one would have to be earned. Rhett Rheese and Paul Wernick came on board and wrote the most amazing, exciting, unique comic book script I’d ever read. Even my Marvel pals have confided and said, “Wow, that Deadpool script…That’s spectacular..It should get made” but it didn’t. And years passed and management at Fox passed and executives came and went, each unable to move it forward. During this time, the outstanding Tim Miller stepped into the directors chair to guide the film and from the word go, he started making things happen. I saw storyboards, costume designs and animatics. The vision was becoming a reality and that amazing test reel footage was shot and I thought for certain that the film would be on its way to a green light. Then…more waiting. And here we are, this outstanding vision is being filmed and prepared for a Feb. 12th 2016 release date. I can tell you that you are in for a cinematic comic book experience unlike any you have experienced! Deadpool is all that you’ve been waiting for and a round of applause to Tim, Rhett, Paul, Ryan and Simon Kinberg for seeing it through! #robliefeld#deadpool

Spider-Man Back In Trouble? Tom Rothman Named Head Of Sony Motion Picture Group

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19342:]]

It’s learned that Tom Rothman has replaced Amy Pascal and has been named the head of Sony’s motion picture group.

We’re not sure if or how this will affect plans for the new Spider-Man, but for comic book movie fans, red flags should be going off.

Rothman was recently said to have been let go from Fox due to a lackluster performance, with Rothman said to have interfered in the production of X-Men Origins: Wolverine without the director’s knowledge and apparently was also responsible for blocking the Deadpool movie (see below). Rothman was also behind X-Men: The Last Stand.

Regarding Spider-Man, Amy Pascal is spearheading the new direction as part of a new Sony venture production wing, so it’s possible Rothman’s input may be minimal. In addition, Marvel’s Kevin Feige is onboard as producer.

The Amazing Spider-Man movies ran into problems when the producers didn’t care much for director Marc Webb’s input, which obviously led to the current situation. Hopefully, history isn’t going to repeat itself with Rothman.

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld isn’t a fan and tweeted the following about the Rothman news:

Rob Liefeld Says Deadpool Is A “Pulse-Pounding Adventure”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18921:]]

Fox Studios has given the Deadpool movie the greenlight, which will see Ryan Reynolds reprise as the Merc With The Mouth.

Reynolds recently stated that Deadpool is being done the right way, and now the character’s creator, Rob Liefeld, weighs in on the movie.

“I am unable to discuss anything specific to the screenplay but I can tell you that they have created a pulse-pounding adventure with action sequences that I feared would be stolen prior to the film reaching the big screen,” Liefeld told Total Film Magazine. “They are that good. I wouldn’t champion anything less. This film is unique and will instantly become the defining Deadpool story. This is what all other Deadpool movies will be measured against.”

Liefeld also mentions that Ryan Reynolds is perfect for the part.

“Ryan Reynolds has the voice as well as the physicality that Deadpool requires,” Liefeld said. “He has that perfect, flippant attitude down pat. His limited role as part of Wolverine’s crew in Origins was fantastic. The audience loved him. Then that third act took a left turn and they didn’t maximize on Ryan’s appeal or Deadpool’s potential. I’ve never wavered in support for Ryan as Deadpool, he’s perfect.”

Speaking of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, like many of us, Liefeld wasn’t a big fan of how Deadpool was portrayed.

“I spoke to a producer who worked on that film – he is no longer associated with the franchise – who felt that Deadpool’s role was just to serve as a nemesis for Wolverine. Sewing his mouth shut and putting him in costume was ridiculous, short-sighted and limited the appeal. Thankfully, Ryan championed the spinoff film.”

“Deadpool” has a February 12, 2016 release and begins filming this March.
