David Ayer Explains Batman, Jason Todd Robin & Joker Connection

We get some backstory on Batman, the dead Robin Jason Todd, and Joker in the DCEU.

Empire caught up with Suicide Squad director David Ayer who offers up the reason why Joker has certain tattoos as well as why he wears a teeth grill, which has to do with what went down with Robin.

“This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection,” Ayer said. “But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

Suicide Squad also revealed that Harley Quinn had a hand in Robin’s death.

Jason Todd is currently rumored to be returning as Red Hood in the solo Ben Affleck Batman movie, with a separate rumor stating it may take place within Arkham Asylum.

“Suicide Squad” is directed by David Ayer starring Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, and Scott Eastwood in an unknown role.

Synopsis:

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Supervillains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Looks Like No Suicide Squad Ultimate Cut

For fans hoping for a Suicide Squad Ultimate Cut, that might not be in the cards.

Following the disappointing theatrical release of Batman Vs. Superman, an extended Ultimate Cut was released, which I felt was a heck of a lot better than the movie version.

With Suicide Squad currently mirroring Batman Vs. Superman over at Rotten Tomatoes with a paltry 27% positive rating (dropping 11% in the past day or two), and it also learned a lot of Jared Leto Joker scenes were cut from the movie, I’ve seen some fans online hoping for a Suicide Squad Ultimate cut.

The reason there may not be a Suicide Squad Ultimate Cut is because the theatrical release of Suicide Squad is director David Ayer’s version. Regarding Batman vs. Superman, Zack Snyder wanted to put out a longer theatrical version, but was turned down by WB brass.

Ayer filled in Collider that they have “a chunk” of deleted scenes for the Suicide Squad Blu-Ray with “definitely over 10 minutes of material on there.” Ayer continues with confirmation the theatrical version of Suicide Squad is his cut.

“But this cut of the movie is my cut, there’s no sort of parallel universe version of the movie, the released movie is my cut,” Ayer said. “And that’s one of the toughest things about writing, shooting, and directing a film, is you end up with these orphans and you f—ing love them and you think they’d be amazing scenes and do these amazing things but the film is a dictatorship (laughs), not a democracy, and just because something’s cool and charismatic doesn’t mean it gets to survive in the final cut. The flow of the movie is the highest master.”

You can watch one of those cut Jared Leto Joker scenes here.

I’m also going to post a slight spoiler following this image why a Suicide Squad Ultimate cut wouldn’t even work.

Suicide Squad Spoiler Warning:

The biggest flaw with the movie is the villain. I can’t see how they can fix that with added scenes. Sure it would be cool to see more of Leto’s Joker (I actually had no problem with his screen time), but I’m guessing it wouldn’t add anything to the story, which overall I felt was extremely lacking. The villain (not the actor who played the role) was awful. Again, just my opinion.

Stan Lee & Joe Quesada Respond To David Ayer “F’ Marvel”

The premiere of Suicide Squad saw director David Ayer get a little worked up as he echoed a fan who yelled out, “F’ Marvel!”

Ayer quickly took to Twitter to offer an apology.

Word of the Marvel f-bomb has now reached the likes of none other than Stan Lee, as well as Marvel Comics chief creative officer Joe Quesada.

Regarding the latter, Quesada tweeted out everything’s good.

“Hey Marvel faithful I know you’re upset but cut @DavidAyerMovies a break, it was all in good fun. Can’t wait to see SS, best of luck David!”

Likewise, Stan Lee didn’t seem to upset by the comment (via CBM), which also saw Stan Lee link to his infamous “Stan Le F**k You” rant.

Suicide Squad Issues Include Drama & Lots Of Cuts

Yesterday saw the early Suicide Squad reviews hit Rotten Tomatoes giving it a dismal rating; actually today the rating is even lower at 32%.

Now word of the problems surrounding the movie is beginning to come out as THR reports on the matter.

It’s said Suicide Squad had “Secret Drama: Rushed Production, Competing Cuts, High Anxiety” with the article going futher in depth:

One WB exec is quoted as saying “better late than never.”

Used a director, David Ayer, untested in tentpole movies.

Too rushed (script was done by Ayer in six weeks).

Mutiptile and competing cuts of the film in part due to an early test screening as well as reaction to the trailers (needed to be more fun and light, and less somber than Ayer’s version).

Too much studio intervention (unclear what it means to be the actual director on the movie).

WB let Ayer pursue his original vision, but Warners set about working on a different cut at the same time working with the company that put out the trailer.

A source with ties to Suicide Squad says they would have been better off giving Ayer more time to work.

WB was nervous from the start and became extremely rattled and even more nervous following the reaction to Batman Vs. Superman (which also had editing and cuts issues).

WB CEO Kevin Tsujihara “was really pissed about damage to the brand,” following the reception to Batman Vs. Superman.

 Mutilple editors.

Another sources describe the “fraught process”: “a lot of panic and ego instead of calmly addressing the tonal issue.”

The demands by WB started to bother Ayer: He fired and rehired his management team; WB didn’t pick up his Will Smith Bright movie which went to Netflix with Ayer getting a massive $90 million.

The article does note Ayer was on board with the process as Ayer and WB released a joint statement: “This was an amazing experience. We did a lot of experimentation and collaboration along the way. But we are both very proud of the result. This is a David Ayer film, and Warners is proud to present it.”

Suicide Squad needs to make $750-800 million to be a success.

David Ayer also took to Twitter to address the critical reviews stating he’s proud of the movie and did it for the fans.

“Suicide Squad” has an August 5, 2016 release date directed by David Ayer starring Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, and Scott Eastwood in an unknown role.

David Ayer Says “F Marvel” At Suicide Squad Premiere; Wants To Direct Superman

Update: David Ayer has apologized for his ant-Marvel remarks.

Original story:

It’s definitely on!

At tonight’s premiere of Suicide Squad, director David Ayer took the stage and said, “F’ Marvel!”

Watch the video below.

David Ayer also told JoBlo that if given the chance, he wouldn’t mind taking on the Man of Steel.

If everything was on the table? I love Superman, I think Superman would be amazing. There’s so many; it’s such an insanely rich universe, there’s so much depth to it. You could literally open up the encyclopedia of characters and stab your finger at a page and you’d have an amazing character.

And his thoughts on Batman vs. Superman:

I liked it a lot. I love Zack; he is probably the biggest fan of DC Comics. He has an incredible passion in a very specific way, a specific take on it. He’s a smart guy, and I think he heard everybody, he heard them loud and clear, and you grow and you evolve. I thought it was a stunning movie, absolutely stunning. I wish I could get some of those shots in the can. The guy’s an amazing visualist.

King Shark Almost Made It Into Suicide Squad

It’s learned King Shark almost made it into the Suicide Squad movie.

David Ayer was asked the question on Twitter, “What other characters had you considered including into the Skwad that didn’t quite make the cut?”

With Ayer responding via video (watch below), “So one of the characters I was thinking about for the Squad line-up was actually King Shark, but we realized it would take a lot of work, lot of CG work, I wasn’t quite comfortable having a full CG character. We actually ended up going with Killer Croc who turned out to be the right guy for the job.”

It’s probably a good thing King Shark never made it into Suicide Squad otherwise the character may have never shown up on The Flash. WB put the clamp down on Arrow from using Suicide Squad characters as they thought the brand recognition would get mixed up in the eyes of the fans.

Speaking of King Shark, DC Collectibles also revealed the cool Flash action figure at Comic-Con. Check that out below as well.

Nope.

You can watch an interview below with the cast of the Suicide Squad, with director David Ayer asked what’s the most ridiculous rumor he’s heard?

“That the Joker is Jason Todd. It ain’t the case,” Ayer responded and pointed into the camera [at the fans]. “He’s not.”

Ayer also tackles the rumor that said they did Suicide Squad reshoots to add funnier moments, aka “The Deadpool Affect.”

“I don’t think you can do that,” Ayer said. “You know you got a scene and then all of a sudden dudes are cracking jokes back to the old scene. It doesn’t work like that. The movie was always funny. The movie was always a lot of fun. The studio just gave me more resources to make it even better.”

Joker’s Tattoos Have Meaning In Suicide Squad

That first pic of Jared Leto as The Joker in Suicide Squad saw the internet explode as many fans weren’t – and still are not –  happy with the look of the Joker, particularly in regards to the tattoos.

Director David Ayer spoke with Yahoo movies about the Joker tattoos and mentioned they have meaning as well as admitted they are controversial.

The tattoos tell a very specific story…And eventually people will decipher them and understand what’s going on, but obviously they’re contentious, any time you do something new it’s contentious. There’s very specific stories and easter eggs in those tattoos. And even his teeth, there’s an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It’s putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world.

David Ayer Talks Suicide Squad & New Images

Suicide Squad Trailer

Check out what director David Ayer had to say in the latest issue of Total Film Magazine about Suicide Squad as well as some images.

In your normal comic-book movie you have the good guy, the hero, and there’s a checklist and you can reverse engineer their actions from any given situation because they’re going to do the right thing. These are bad guys, so they have a lot more options open to them in any given situation. They’re capable of anything, and that’s the fun of this.

What Jared has done is absolutely incredible. When he steps onto the set the world stops. Everything stops. What he’s done is so powerful, so menacing, so palpable, you can feel him. The crew stops working and just watches him. I have to get everybody going again because he’s so fascinating.

What’s interesting to me is how there’s been a lot of perceptions of what this film is because we have been exposed more than other movies. What people think this movie is is not what it is. There’s so much more to come.

Suicide Squad Is Rated PG-13 & Joker Details (Video)

Batman producer Charles Roven confirms that Suicide Squad will have a PG-13 rating as well as offers details about Jared Leto’s Joker and more.

You can watch Roven talk about Suicide Squad in the above video, with some of the text found below (via Collider).

On Jared Leto’s Joker:

“Look, you know, it was different, it was fun. The group first wasn’t sure because the AD’s had to call him ‘Mr. J’ to get him to come to the set [laughs]. And he did in many ways isolate himself from the rest of the group, but that’s really what his character was, the purpose of his character in many ways, other than when he was with Harley or trying to get Harley. It was very entertaining, it was fuel for a lot of good sport and a lot of laughs, and his isolation bonded the squad, and we wanted the squad bonded.”

David Ayer pitched the idea to do Suicide Squad:

“He had a close relationship with [Warner Bros. executive] Greg Silverman and Greg said, ‘He’s got an idea on Suicide Squad, he wants to come in and pitch it.’ Having a guy like that who’s been able to—all of his films have had a certain level of groundedness to them, really feeling very richly real. And so having that sensibility, which is along the lines of what we were talking about earlier how we like to have things grounded in science or whatever, I was very anxious to hear what his take was gonna be on Suicide Squad and I was very happily surprised, but it was right exactly in the pocket that we were looking for. Honestly that movie was essentially greenlit in the pitch meeting.”

On David Ayer being the writer and director for Suicide Squad:

Surprisingly, one of the things that is a natural benefit of having a writer-director is that when you meet with him, if he’s trying to meet with an actor and explain to them what the role’s gonna be, there’s a lot of confidence that the actor has that the man who’s telling him what’s it’s gonna be is gonna deliver because he’s both the writer and the director. So David was very fresh off the heels of a movie that he could show called Fury, which was a fabulous picture, and he was able to talk about these really—as he says ‘it can be fun to be bad’ and ‘just because they’re bad doesn’t mean they’re evil’, and so he was able to convince all of the actors that we went out to that he was gonna be able to make these characters so compelling that they would wanna be played more than once by these actors.”

On the atmosphere on set:

“I have to say, it was one of the most fun sets ever. I’ve been doing this for a while, and the camaraderie that was built on that set—everybody couldn’t wait for the next day to come back to work.”

Suicide Squad having a PG-13 Rating:

The intention of the film is definitely to be PG-13… We really want to make these films tonally consistent so that, as I said because this is a shared universe, at least our current thinking—and again, we’re not dealing in absolutes because while this is business it’s also a creative endeavor, so you want to leave yourself open to changing your mind, doing something different, being inspired, that’s the whole process of filmmaking is you have to allow for inspiration as well as having a road map for what you’re gonna do. So our plan right now is to make all these films PG-13. In some cases, you know, right there on the edge of PG-13, but still PG-13.”

What will surprise audiences the most?

“There’s a lot of characters in Suicide Squad, and I think you’ll be engaged with them. They all have fabulously different arcs, they’re all very individualistic, and I think that also they’re very, very human in their own dysfunctional ways. And I think that the personal individuals stories and how they relate to each other will be surprising.”

Jared Leto Talks Joker For Suicide Squad & Task Force X Scene Description Revealed

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22643:]]

The latest issue of Empire Magazine has a featured article on the new Suicide Squad movie, which includes a batch of new images and a crazy Jared Leto Joker cover.

Now we hear from Jared Leto for the first time talking about the Joker as well as a scene involving Deadshot, Diablo, Boomerang, Slipknot, Harley Quinn and Killer Croc.

Regarding the Joker, Leto offers:

“I was just thinking that the Joker would probably just say, ‘F**k you,’ and hang up…

There was definitely a period of…detachment. I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole.

I always get the sense that The Joker may be much older than people think. It’s something different. If you don’t break rules, you’re not going to strike new ground. I think I’ll be cooling down for the rest of my life.”

It’s also revealed that the actor, Jim Parrack, that plays Joker’s henchman, Johnny Frost, is ordered by Leto on set to spray paint roses black and fill a backpack with nine-inch nails. Leto also said he listened to 1920s gospel music and read books about Shamans to get him into the mood to play The Joker.

Batman producer Charles Roven also let it be known the look of the Joker is inspired by Mexican cartels: “[The Joker is] more social…a very successful and smart businessman besides being a sociopath.”

Director David Ayer offered his take as well: “The Joker is the third rail of comic book movies. There’s a power to that character, and by some freaking miracle, through the incredible things Jared has done and the photography and all the other millions of things that went into it, we’ve cooked up something transcendent. He’s scary.”

Regarding the Task Force X scene:

Deadshot, Diablo, Boomerang, Slipknot, Harley Quinn, and Killer Croc are on board a helicopter working with Navy SEALs led by Rick Flag, when they are joined by Katana. It’s revealed Katana is Flag’s bodyguard and has joined Task Force X voluntarily.

Dialogue included in the scene has Flag stating: “She’s got my back. I’d advise not getting killed by her – her sword traps the souls of its victims.”

Harley Quinn then introduces herself: “Harley Quinn, nice to meetcha. Love your perfume. What is that: Stench of Death?”

A bit about Killer Croc is mentioned as Croc throws up chunks of half-digested goat meat and then picks it up and eats it, which grosses out the NAVY Seals.

Viola Davis On Suicide Squad: I’m Blown Away

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21851:]]

One of the most anticipated comic book movies – if not the most anticipated – to come out next year is Suicide Squad. The trailer initially leaked online following Comic-Cn, and then when officially released took the world by storm. It’s amassed over 50 million views on YouTube alone as well.

Deadline caught up with Viola Davis, who is playing Amanda Waller, to get her take on the movie to date:

I have one more day [of filming], which I’m flying out for this weekend. I’ve been working on the film since April 1st. It sounds like a lot, but I haven’t been working every day. I haven’t done a lot of comic book movies, actually I’ve done none! DC Comics have a tendency to have darker characters. You know, Batman is a darker character, Harley Quinn, the Joker, and what David Ayer has managed to do is humanize them. I think that you see it in the trailer too–just something different about it that makes you lean in. What he’s explored is the pathology behind all of these characters, so you just get that extra spin that gives you the flavor and a look which is very different. And at the same time you get all the stuff that you’ve gotten before, which is the action, the special effects, the great makeup. I’m blown away by the movie. Once I saw the trailer, I was like, “Oh, my God. He really is a magician.” I mean, I had no idea. So, it’s been a real pleasure working on it with David Ayer.
