LEGO Batman, Ninjago, LEGO Movie 2 Get Release Date

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20152:]]

Warner Bros. has announced release dates for the three upcoming LEGO movies.

The untitled LEGO Batman movie will be released on February 10, 2017 starring Will Arnett as the voice of Batman and Bruce Wayne.

The LEGO spinoff Ninjago movie will now be released on September 22, 2017.

The sequel to The LEGO Movie is set for a May 18, 2018 release.

Full details below:

Building a strong slate of animated tentpoles that extends well into 2018, Warner Bros. Pictures today confirmed the release dates of three much-anticipated LEGO features.  The announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The next LEGO film to open will be the as-yet-untitled LEGO Batman feature, which is coming to theatres earlier than planned, with the global launch starting domestically on February 10, 2017.  Seven months later comes “Ninjago,” which had been slated for release in fall 2016; however the film is still under construction so it is being moved to September 22, 2017 domestically, with international dates to follow.  “The LEGO Movie Sequel,” the follow-up to the smash hit “The LEGO Movie,” is opening one week earlier than originally slated, now being released domestically on May 18, 2018, beginning its worldwide release.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “We are very excited about dating our upcoming LEGO animated features, which already have a worldwide fan following, built on the foundation of the first film.  These three films already in the pipeline are just the beginning of a creative and diverse animation slate that will be delighting audiences for years to come.”

Kwan Vandenberg added, “We are looking forward to expanding the LEGO film franchise globally with these three incredibly imaginative movies, each offering something different to appeal to a broad range of audiences around the world.”

Jill Wilfert, Vice President of Licensing and Entertainment from The LEGO Group, noted, “We are so pleased to continue our creative partnership with Warner Bros. on these upcoming projects.  It’s truly amazing to see how the big screen lends another dimension to the rich LEGO world, and offers new ways for fans to be engaged and entertained by these characters.”

Warner Bros. has unveiled video of the new Batmobile in addition to details of the new Ben Affleck Batsuit.

NBA star DeAndre Jordan was lucky enough to be given a special tour of the Batman 75th Anniversary exhibit.

The Ben Affleck Batman has a physically bigger frame than Superman; Batman has steel knuckles and steel-toe boots – “so this is much more of the grappling Batman.”

The new Batmobile raises when it’s doing jumps and then goes lower to the ground when doing cruising scenes, and has a machine gun turret.

Josh Hartnett Talks Turning Down Batman & Christopher Nolan

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20093:]]

Prior to Christian Bale, Josh Hartnett was Christopher Nolan’s possible choice to play Batman.

Back at the time when Batman Begins was released, Hartnett was all the rage in Hollywood having come off Black Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor; however, instead of embracing his fame, the twenty-something year old actor chose to spend more time with his family and friends.

Now in an interview with Playboy, Hartnett explains turning down the Batman role, which cost him a role in The Prestige as well. Any fan of the Christopher Nolan movies knows the director likes to use the same actors throughout all his movies, so with Hartnett turning down Batman, Nolan went with Bale.

I’ve definitely said no to some of the wrong people. I said no because I was tired and wanted to spend more time with my friends and family. That’s frowned upon in this industry. People don’t like being told no. I don’t like it. I learned my lesson when [writer-director] Christopher Nolan and I talked about Batman. I decided it wasn’t for me. Then he didn’t want to put me in The Prestige. They not only hired their Batman for it, they also hired my girlfriend [Scarlett Johansson] at the time.

Hartnett goes on to discuss how he now feels things should have been different (Hartnett also turned down roles for Spider-Man and Superman).

That’s when I realized relationships were formed in the fire of that first Batman film and I should have been part of the relationship with this guy Nolan, who I felt was incredibly cool and very talented. I was so focused on not being pigeonholed and so scared of being considered only one thing as an actor. I should have thought, Well, then, work harder, man. Watching Christian Bale go on to do so many other things has been just awesome. I mean, he’s been able to overcome that. Why couldn’t I see that at the time?

Hartnett also says now he wouldn’t turn down a superhero role.

Yeah, I have, for sure. I know now that I wouldn’t turn something down just because it’s a superhero role. I was born in the era of Michael Keaton playing Batman. That is Batman to me. He’s awe-inspiring in that role—so quiet, like a ghost, and then every once in a while this incredible thing just pops up in him. It was such a cool performance, especially since he’d been known for such big, broad performances.

Josh Hartnett stars in “Penny Dreadful” on Showtime.

New Convergence Batman Leaks Online From Batman #40

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20034:]]

Spoilers follow for the new Batman for Convergence, Batman #40 and “Batman Endgame.”

We’ve all seen the new Batman, with some comparing it to Chappie or even Big Hero 6.

Now, apparently, a page from Batman #40 has leaked online, with the issue not due out to April 29th.

The image reveals Commissioner Gordon in the new Batsuit.

I gotta say that this is rather surprising to have a big reveal from a DC book like this to leak online. Honestly, I wouldn’t be too surprised if it was leaked intentionally to quell the backlash against the new Batman suit. We even seen Gordon state, “This is the dumbest idea in the history of Gotham,” – which mirrors just about every Batman fan’s opinions, at least to date. Now that Gordon has seemingly become a Batman Robocop, it could actually be pretty cool story written by Snyder with art by Capullo.

Check it out.

Update: The page might actually be from DC’s Free Comic Book Day issue, Divergence, that is out Saturday, May 2nd, as users on reddit are reporting the entire issue leaked online.

Update #2: We’ve been asked to take the image down.

DC Animated Series Gone From Netflix

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19519:]]

In an update to our story Cosmic Book News first reported on a month ago, the DC animated and select Cartoon Network series are no longer available on Netflix.

The series expired on March 30th.

A search of Netflix no longer yields results for any DC shows (or movies) related to: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern or Justice League.

Likewise, search results return nothing for the Cartoon Network series: Regular Show, Adventure Time, Generator Rex, MAD, Codename Kids Next Door, and Cow and Chicken.

Select Cartoon Network series are still available including: Ben 10, Billy and Mandy, Chowder, Dexter’s Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Samurai Jack, Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, Ed, Ed N Eddy, Cow and Chicken, and Power Puff Girls.

Some of the available Cartoon Network series now list April 6th as their expiration date.

The expired DC animated series include:  Justice League Unlimited, Justice League (2001), Young Justice, Batman Beyond, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, and Batman: The Brave and The Bold.

We previously reached out to Warner Bros. about the expirations, but never received a reply back.

Ben Affleck Will Be Able To Turn Head As Batman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19875:]]

It’s learned the redesign of the new Batman suit for Batman Vs. Superman will make the costume more comfortable and flexible for Ben Affleck.

Costume designer Michael Wilkinson, who also worked on Man Of Steel, told fashionista.com that getting the new Batman suit right was paramount to director Zack Snyder.

“That’s actually one of the first things that Snyder mentioned to me in one of our initial meetings,” Wilkinson said. “It’s a very important thing to Zack that the Batsuit would be comfortable and very flexible, but then would be able to perform in a very natural and forceful way. So a lot of incredible engineering went into the development of the new black cowl.”

Interestingly enough, when Ben Affleck was cast as the new Batman, Christian Bale’s advice for Affleck was “to tell the costume designer to make sure the cowl doesn’t feel like the Joker is sitting on your shoulders every time you try to turn your head.”

Bale also said it took three people 20 minutes to take the cowl off of his head and that he found it “ridiculously unheroic” when he needed help to “take a pee.”

So actually it sounds as if Zack Snyder is going for a more realistic approach for his new Batman costume than even Christopher Nolan’s approach, and the Batman costume has come a long way from the Michael Keaton design, which had no neck movement at all.

Update: THR has further comments from Wilkinson where it doesn’t sound as if the new Ben Affleck costume is all that more convenient.

“It does involve multiple costumers,” admitted costume designer Michael Wilkinson, adding that turning the actor into the DC Entertainment superhero is “not the sort of thing that I could just sit in Ben’s trailer and he gets into it himself. It’s a six-handed operation.”

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter and Tao Okamoto in new character roles for the film. Justice League is to follow directed by Zack Snyder as well.

Spoiler: Death in DC’s Future’s End #46

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19735:]]

This week has seen plenty of “death” in the world of comics, some in print and others on screen.

Both Aiden and Noah were literally torn apart on AMC’s, The Walking Dead. Cisko payed the ultimate price for being too curious on the CW’s, The Flash. Marvel bumped off Falcon’s longtime friend and partner, Redwing, in the pages of All-New Captain America #5; and TMNT fans shed a tear as their favorite “techy,” Donatello, got smashed into oblivion in this week’s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #44!

Not to be left behind, DC, let the Joker – albeit a Brother Eye inhanced Joker/Batman amalgam from the future – gun down one of the most popular characters in the Batman mythos, Terry McGinnis! That’s right, Batman Beyond has gone to the “great beyond’ in a hail of gunfire and heroics all in order to save the present from becoming the future he came from. Take a look at how it all went down below:

We will miss you Terry, maybe they will bring you back with super powers!
