Marvel held a “Next Big Thing” mystery live blog earlier with the announcement that Zeb Wells and Joe Madureira would be on the new Spidey title, Avenging Spider-Man.
The following is taken from the Marvel live blog.
Avenging Spider-Man is an ongoing and set to swing into local comic shops starting in November.
The first arc, which is three issues long, will see Spider-Man and the Red Hulk headed deep underground to deal with the Mole Man and encountering a brand new threat.
“With Dan Slott nailing all the Peter Parker soap opera stuff in Amazing Spider-Man, we wanted to a book about Spider-Man as a super hero, out there in the Marvel Universe with the Avengers. This is the big super action movie of Spider-Man every month, with Joe Mad on art,” said Wells.
“I was a freaking nerd in high school, so I can relate to Spider-Man,” added Madureira. “I loved Spider-Man because he was funny. Over the years, depending on the writer, sometimes he’s funny, sometimes he’s not. Zeb is very very funny. I hope I can pull it off, but we’re going to have some good comedy in there with serious big action.”
The genesis of the book came from when Zeb was working on Amazing Spider-Man and kicked around the idea of bringing Marvel Team-Up back. Steve [Wacker] didn’t go for it because he never liked those stories that didn’t feel important to the main series. Avenging Spider-Man is Marvel Team-Up but where the stories have a major impact on Spider-Man and the Avengers.
Zeb promises this book will line up with both Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man and Brian Bendis’ Avengers, but it will tell its own stories.
Zeb says even though the Avengers will be a starting point for who Spider-Man teams up with, they will explore the broader Marvel Universe down the road. A lot of the fun is finding a third character who can interact with both Spidey and the Avenger in that issue.
One villain Zeb is guaranteeing is The Vulture, as he has an idea.
“I don’t like working on stuff unless it’s going to make an impact. I want people to talk about this and remember it. If I finally get my crack at Spider-Man and then blow it, ugh. I will happily walk in front of a bus to sell more copies after I finish,” said Madureira.
Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man will still be twice per month.
The opening Broadway production of “Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark,” which has seen a plethora of delays and problems, has been delayed until Tuesday June 14th.
Comic book artist Greg Horn will be lending his talent to the Broadway extravaganza SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK, providing high end illustrations for the play’s line of merchandise and also some imagery for the official program guide.
