Boyle, who directed 28 Days Later back in 2002, the first of the original movies, will be directing the first film of the new zombie trilogy from a script by Alex Garland who also wrote 28 Days Later and is behind the new A24 Civil War movie, as well as Ex Machina and Annihilation.

Cillian Murphy in 28 Days Later

28 Days Later is a British post-apocalyptic horror film following the story of a man named Jim (played by Cillian Murphy) who wakes up from a coma to discover that the entire city of London has been ravaged by a highly contagious virus, turning most of the population into violent, bloodthirsty zombies.

No word, yet, if Murphy will be back for the new films.

28 Weeks Later, released in 2007, was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and is set in the same universe as the first and takes place six months after the initial outbreak. It follows the efforts to repopulate and rebuild London, but of course, things take a dark turn. The virus makes a return, and chaos ensues once again.

The two films brought in nearly $150 million on budgets of only $8 million for the first film and $15 million for the second.
