Confirming what I told you a month ago, Sony’s 28 Years Later is an official bomb with a massive $75 million loss.
According to Box Office Mojo, 28 Years Later ended its box office run on Sunday with a $150 million worldwide gross, a $70M domestic gross, with an $80M foreign gross.

Either Way, ZERO Profit
Prior to the film’s release, the budget was reported to be $75M, so if we take the industry standard break-even measurement of a 2.5x, that would mean 28 Years Later would need to have brought in $225M just to break even, let alone make any profit. We see it failed to come even near that number.
Wait? What about the reports 28 Years Later had a budget of only $60M? Yeah, interestingly enough, the trades and shills started reporting that number once it was learned 28 Years Later underperformed. See how that works???
So even if we 2.5x that $60M, that means 28 Years Later made ZERO profit. And oh, what a coincidence, the flick lands right at $150M. You don’t make movies – or let alone go into any business – with the hope of NOT making money.

Trilogy now in doubt
To boot, 28 Years Later put such a bad taste in viewers mouth, what’s it mean for the sequel, The Bone Temple, which is due out in January (they already filmed it, which is directed by The Marvels‘ Nia DaCosta)? And the third movie, which hasn’t even been greenlit yet?
You know what it means? YouTuber Grace Randolph is already questioning if The Bone Temple will get a theatrical release or if Sony will dump the sequel on streaming. She’s right.
The third film will likely not happen if 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple make NO money, and especially if they LOSE money, which looks more likely.

What happened?
What happened is that Alex Garland and Danny Boyle gave us a garbage movie that pulls the rug out from the audience.
It’s a classic example of indoctrination where it sets up the audience with a strong father-son relationship and then pulls a big switcheroo into some weird zombie feminist cult film.
Well, credit to fans, they rejected 28 Years Later completely for what it is: pure garbage.
