28 Years Later: Fan Reaction, Cold Box Office Undeformed

28 Years Later is now out, which means the fan reactions are in, and they’re a lot colder than the critic reviews. The box office numbers are also coming in and the flick is underperforming.

As of Saturday night, the Rotten Tomatoes Score from critics currently stands at 90%, which at one time was as high as 96%.

The fan score, however, is much lower, and has dropped to 66%.

For a comparison, the first 28 Days Later has Rotten Tomatoes scores of 87% and 85%, and the sequel, 28 Weeks Later, has 73% and 66%.

Likewise, PostTrak audiences are giving 28 Years Later only 3 stars, with a 54% definite recommend. A majority of the audience is men at 60%, compared to women at 40%.

Over at IMDb, the rating has also dropped, now to a 7.2.

The CinemaScore is revealed to be a “B,” which really isn’t a good score and syncs up with the fan score above, which again has dropped to 66%.

Box office report

28 Years Later brought in $5.8 million for its Thursday previews, which is good. It remains to be seen how well the film does at the box office, as it depends on whether fans continue to show up this weekend, or if the preview was front-loaded with only the hardcore fans.

The number happens to beat the Thursday night previews of both Final Destination Bloodlines ($5.5M), and Sinners  ($4.7M), which had openings of $51.6M and $48M, respectively.

The Friday box office, which includes Thursday, is reported to be $14M. FDB‘s first Friday was $20.9M, and Sinners came in with $19.M, so it seems audiences aren’t showing up for 28 Years Later, possibly due to negative word-of-mouth (see below).

Saturday pm update: It’s being reported that 28 Years Later will be lucky to bring in $30 million. Estimates had it at $35M – $45M.

28 Years Later Review: The First Hour’s Amazing, the Rest Is a Disaster

What are fans saying?

Regarding what the fans are saying, they seem to be mirroring my own review, where I offer that 28 Years Later is really good for the first hour, and then it goes all downhill.

I also break things down further regarding what went wrong.

The overall atmosphere at the beginning of the movie reminded me of the movie <28 Days Later> from 20 years ago, which was good. However, the main character’s incomprehensible actions to move on to the next stage were difficult to sympathize with and not attractive.

This movie started out intense much the other two movies, but then just got weird. It my attention but was not at all what I was expecting.

garbage, just was confusing in the end.. what the hell..

It was the weakest of the 3 films. Too much fantasy story telling, then real life, like the first two. Ending disappointed me. I asked myself, why go in that direction? I would still go see a 4th film though.

The preview was better than the movie. First 30 mins was good then It was like 3 different scripts were made. Then the tone of the movie just changed. It’s crazy how this movie was so anticipated and yet they missed the mark by a wide margin…

They should’ve name this anything else but 28 years later. At the beginning I was excited thinking I’m about to watch what happened to others during the beginning outbreak then lead to the current aftermath of the outbreak. Overall the film is a complete let down.
