Watch: Star Wars Tie Fighter Anime Short Film

Check out the cool Anime fan-film above for Star Wars: Tie Fighter.

YouTuber OtaKing77077 put the short together and recommends instead of donating to a kickstarter or Patreon, to give a friend a candy bar.

Details:

What if there was an Empire-focussed short Star Wars animation, drawn with the crazy detail and shading of classic 80s anime that’s all but vanished from Japan nowadays?
Well, I tried my best. Apologies in advance for not living up to Venus Wars standards.
Drawn and animated by yours truly over 4 years’ worth of weekends, with music by the living guitar solo Zak Rahman and sound design by up and coming audio technician Joseph Leyva. Fans of Lucasarts’ seminal 1994 TIE Fighter game may notice a few familiar sights and sounds. That “incoming missile” noise gives me horrible flashbacks to this day…

Avengers 2 Fun Facts Reveal New Details, Powers, Weapons & More

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19781:]]

Spoilers, ahoy, for Avengers 2 in the following official list of “fun facts” released by Disney.

Check out details on the Avengers’ powers, weapons and more:

1. Hulk got a welcomed upgrade to his wardrobe with the addition of stretchy pants, which he wears underneath his clothes. No more will he be caught in the embarrassing situation of being half-naked in shredded clothing when he Hulks-out—the pants, made of high-tech, microfiber fabric, stretch with him.

2. Thanks to Tony Stark’s engineering skills, Hawkeye received an upgrade to his weaponry. He now has many new arrow tips that serve different purposes. Some of these are explained in the movie and others the audience will just get the joy of seeing deployed on screen. Hawkeye’s quiver has also changed—it is more automated and faster loading, and is capable of holding nine arrows.

3. Hawkeye’s bow also received a makeover, with the classic black color being changed to maroon. Added features to the bow include an infrared-sighting device and a sonic-sighting device.

4. An exciting change was also made to Captain America’s shield. It now has the ability to be called back, much like the Iron Man suits. Instead of having two handles in the back, the shield now has a magnetic element that clips onto Cap’s gauntlet.

5. Courtesy of Tony Stark, Black Widow gets to flaunt new fighting batons, which are based on Escrima Sticks. But Black Widow’s two sticks are charged exactly the same as her stingers, so when she jabs, she is not only striking her opponent, but delivering a massive jolt of power as well.

6. On this film, production designer Charles Wood and his team built an enormous, new Avengers Tower set that is the largest set ever built for a Marvel film. Much of the movie takes place there on its many different levels. A large expanse of glass opens the view to New York City and one can also see a hangar for the Quinjet. The multiple environments are all connected, with the ability to move from downstairs to upstairs and vice versa.

7. The Avengers Tower set is designed to serve the story in multiple ways. In the movie, the Tower, designed and built by Tony Stark, is a gathering place for The Avengers—a place to plan, do business, relax or study. There is a lounge area, three laboratory areas plus a machine room, a gym, a relaxation area and a locker room. The Tower was also designed to provide everything Tony Stark needs for his work and research.

8. New characters entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the comic book world are Wanda (Scarlet Witch) and Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver), who have powers that have not yet been seen on screen. Pietro is lightning fast and Wanda possesses the power of telekinesis, and she is able to fire neurons in people’s brains remotely using her powers and as a result can manipulate their minds.

9. Another new character on The Avengers team is Vision, played by Paul Bettany, who previously had voiced Jarvis in the Iron Man films. He’s an artificial life form whose look is truly unique. Vision’s powers are spectacular and he represents a new power base for The Avengers team.

10. The Hulkbuster is an iconic piece of Iron Man tech—a prebuilt super-suit designed to take on the Hulk. The Hulkbuster Armor was developed by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, after they studied the Hulk’s physical actions and strength levels in an effort to find a way to contain him and minimize the damage caused by his rages. A satellite in low orbit is always around Banner and at a moment’s notice, Tony Stark can deploy the Hulkbuster armor, get into it and stop the Hulk in his tracks—theoretically.

11. The redesigned Quinjet has a more militaristic look this time around and the pilots are now able to have a good look at the environment around them while flying. The design of the canopy was based on a helicopter cockpit with glass in front and below, which will give audiences a tremendous sense of speed when the Quinjet is flying through city airspace. The interior has been stripped down to a more utilitarian, sleek space as well, with many of the luxurious finishes and padding removed for an edgier look.

12. A unique asset to the production in Seoul was the use drones and remote control cars to put the camera in places that could never be achieved by camera operators or helicopters. The production enlisted the expertise of brothers Menstru Pa, who is the Korean National Champion in drone flying, and Pak Min Keu, who is the Korean National Champion in remote car racing.

13. Dressing the Super Heroes for a pivotal party scene was a task that fell to veteran costume designer Alexandra Byrne. Since it is the first time that Thor has ever been seen in party clothes, Byrne worked with Chris Hemsworth to find the right combination of jeans, jacket and shirt that would dress his shape and not look themed or fancy. Dressing Tony Stark was easier, especially since Robert Downey Jr. wanted a very sophisticated look. Subsequently it was off to London’s famous Savile Row for tailoring. After five fittings, Tony Stark emerged looking quite elegant.

Synopsis:

When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. Star Wars: Rogue One Coming To Star Wars Celebration

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19771:]]

In addition to the Star Wars Battlefront video game, it looks likely Disney and LucasFilm will be promoting the first Star Wars spinoff from director Gareth Edwards, Star Wars: Rogue One, at next month’s Star Wars Celebration.

As Star Wars: Rogue One shares “Rogue” with Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, it’s learned that instead of Paramount having to file lawsuits and such, Disney will simply not promote Rogue One, which hits December 2016, until after MI 5 gets released this Summer; so it’s really not that much of a big deal.

In THR‘s report on the matter, it is stated that Disney LucasFilm will still be able to promote Star Wars: Rogue One at the Star Wars Celebration event that takes place in Anaheim, California April 16-19.

Maybe we’ll learn more casting news at the event and more.

Star Wars: Rogue One has a December 16, 2016 release starring Felicity Jones.

Movie Review: Insurgent (2015)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19770:]]

Guns of the Insurgency

A Film Review of Insurgent

The first thought that came to mind when the end credits rolled on Insurgent was how similarly it improved on its predecessor in the exact same manner as Catching Fire (2013) did for The Hunger Games (2012).  Of course, these two stories are eerily similar in so many ways that it doesn’t take a board member of Mensa to realize that Veronica Roth had more than just an “inspiration” in mind for her own brainchild seeing how Suzanne Collins wrapped up her book trilogy a full year before Divergent was released in 2011.  I am certain their respective literatures divulge more than enough differentiating detail about the worlds and characters these stories are about to make it worth any reader’s while to devour every page.  But you just don’t get that kind of flavor in a series of two hour movies.  You get the bare bones of the world, some expository jargon; make a b-line for character which finally launches you right into the drama and action.  Taken in this regard, the similarities of these film franchises start converging like every loony in Gotham gravitates to Batman.

I’d be willing to bet that, “A pretty young white girl compelled to engage in mortal combat to make some difference in a dystopian society that will implode unless her efforts inspire a revolution towards positive change” was used to pitch both trilogies (parts 1 and 2 for their respective final installments, of course).  So what?  Who cares, right?  Meathead, bro-action blockbusters are all remixes of themselves, too!  Die Hards and Under Sieges involve one man killing machines that grind up armies of opposition into kibble to save the day.  Why not let the girls have their shot at it?  I have absolutely no criticism of any of this save for one, and it’s the reason why Under Siege (1992) will always be described as Die Hard (1988) … on a boat.  One of these films came first, caught some kind of lightning in a bottle and every other that follows in an attempt to recreate the formula of the progenitor will always be compared as its doppleganger until it is ultimately forgotten when another copycat steps up to the plate.

Long story short (too late); as entertained as I was by Insurgent, as improved as the visual effects were thanks to an additional $25 million to the budget of Divergent, and as talented as I am sure that Shailene Woodley will prove herself to be when she’s in her prime, this film and this series is old hat: been there, done that.  Perhaps if there were more separation in real time between the releases of the Hunger Games and Divergent sagas, I’d be less susceptible to monotony fatigue.  Lionsgate’s desire to have them run concurrently is curious.  Yes, it makes sense to continue to capitalize on the popularity and success of The Hunger Games films by keeping its target audience primed for another run to the cinema for a similar, girl-powered, butt-kicking adventure.  However, attempting to take advantage of the audience through this kind of acute, formulaic regurgitation is a dangerous game that can easily turn Insurgent’s opening weekend feast of $52.3 million into a second week famine in an instant.  Even if Hunger Games and Divergent have several core concepts and characters that are closely related, it’s on Lionsgate and more specifically screenwriters Brian Duffield, Akiva Goldsman and Mark Bomback to make enough difference to motivate an audience to buy a ticket.  There are too many paralleling plots and coincidental twists with the franchise that came before for Insurgent’s story to be a standalone draw for this movie.

Insurgent isn’t a bad film by any means and the primary reason for this is money, as in added money to the budget which shows improvements in so many ways.  Set design gets an upgrade, external locations are vast and intricate, stunts and combat are more intense, and props actually look like they belong in this futuristic world, guns look much beefier than the piddling blow darts they used in Divergent.  All of these elements translate directly into added entertainment value to the viewer, but as good as they all are, they pale in comparison to the huge upgrade in the visual effects department that is showcased during Tris’ faction simulation unlocking scenes.  These surreal dream sequences push her divergence to the limit as her ability to overcome her fears amidst the challenges that each faction represent is loaded with all sorts of eye candy like floating buildings, obliterating walls with bare hands and disintegrating particle effects.  From top to bottom, Insurgent is a much prettier and visually dynamic film than Divergent.

Performances by the main characters were solid.  Shailene Woodley and Theo James have good chemistry together as Tris and Four, respectively, although I wouldn’t mind seeing them steam things up a lot more as passionate lovers than the good friends who happen to sleep with each other they come off as in this film.  As individuals, Woodley succeeds in manipulating her vulnerability to dominate every scene when Tris is at her weakest.  She needs a bit of improvement on showing her anger and rage as well as her fight choreography which is nowhere near as intensely staccato as Four, the love interest.  Theo James is certainly a man’s man in addition to being the lady’s man because he demonstrates textbook intensity and strength at all times, even at restful times, when he needs to let that iron jaw of his kick back and take a rest.  Kate Winslet as intelligence Nazi Jeanine reprises her role as the ice queen proficiently.  I wish her villainy was allowed greater depth of depravity, but her character’s machinelike callousness represents the apex of her negative energy.

The rest of the cast is inconsistent at best.  Jai Courtney delights once again as precocious, dickhead Eric while Mekhi Phifer’s Max is simply fortunate to be present to recite his lines to the camera.  Miles Teller’s Peter is reliably untrustworthy and self-serving and shows the potential for being a much more capable villain than Jeanine at times.  Ansel Elgort’s Caleb isn’t afforded much screen time to evolve his character and thankfully so because his casual demeanor at all times was as unimpressive as his one facial expression of nonchalance throughout.  Octavia Spencer’s Johanna was a nice surprise to see a veteran showing how one “does more with less,” but it was in fact so little that it seemed like a complete misuse of her talent.  Naomi Watts was in this film?  My favorite moment of Insurgent was seeing Daniel Dae Kim as Jack King who is cool, calm, collected and in command of Candor faction with the charisma he learned to channel from Lost.

Insurgent is a fully capable and worthy follow up to Divergent for all the fanboys and girls.  Casual viewers will continue to draw the parallels with The Hunger Games because the fictions are too similar, plain and simple.  So far, global ticket sales are showing immunity (or apathy) to the elephant in the room and ultimately, that’s the only thing that really matters.  As a pre-summer blockbuster, this film doesn’t have the same competition or expectations of the big boys like the next Fast and Furious or Avengers, but even Divergent saw more than a 50% drop in ticket sales in its second week domestically, and I would expect the same here.  Don’t even think about wasting your money for IMAX or Real 3D screenings of this film as the conversion adds zero emersion to the experience and is a shameless cash grab.  As for a recommendation for purchasing a general admission, I would suggest saving for multiple screenings for the true blockbusters that are just around the corner.  Insurgent is good enough to satisfy that itch if you haven’t been to the movies in a while, but if you don’t feel the need, this can easily be pushed to Netflix.

Dwayne Johnson Says Shazam Script Is Fantastic & Updates On Casting

We just heard Dwayne Johnson talking how Black Adam may eventually join the Justice League, and now Johnson offers more insight to the bad guy soon to be turned anti-hero.

Dwayne Johnson offers a casting update for Shazam as well as more on Black Adam‘s transformation from a bad guy to anti-hero.

Here’s the text:

“I can’t wait to hear more casting news. No, we haven’t picked a Shazam yet,” Johnson offers. “We have been working on the script. Half the scripts already come in. Fantastic. Very excited about it. And what I’m really excited about is, because, again, I’ve lived with this character, and this opportunity for almost 10 years now, so it’s like, in my DNA – I’m like a little kid – and it’s the opportunity to create his journey. But his journey has to start out properly – and starting out properly is not him being a hero – that’s got to be earned. He starts off as a slave, and he’s pissed off and people are going to pay, but eventually down the line he’ll become an anti-hero.

“I’m not quite to sure yet,” Johnson replied when asked if they are looking to cast separate actors for the role of Shazam. There is a lot of opportunity, I think, with technolog. Maybe do a cool face replacement like they did in Captain America. Maybe do something like that. Maybe cast two separate actors. I’m not quite too sure.”

Shazam is due out in 2019, but may be released earlier.

Russo Bros. Confirmed For Avengers: Infinity War 1 & 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19769:]]

Joe and Anthony Russo are confirmed to direct The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2.

The Russo Bros. will be taking over from Joss Whedon for the third and fourth installments of The Avengers movies.

It’s reported both parts of The Infinity War movies will shoot simultaneously starting some time in 2016.

THR is also speculating that the Russo Bros. will most likely reunite with Captain America: The Winter Soldier writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, whom also collaborated on Captain America: Civil War, to script the two-part Avengers: Infinity War films.

The Russo’s will start filming Captain America: Civil War next month, which stars most of the Avengers actors including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner.

In addition to signing on fore the Infinity War movies with Marvel Studios, the Russo Bros. look to be ever busy as they also signed a three year first-look deal with Sony. The duo has also been rumored to be involved with the new Spider-Man in a producing capacity.

Captain America: Civil War hits May 6, 2016; The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 has a May 4, 2018 release, with Part 2 a year later on May 3, 2019.

Jennifer Lawrence Done With Mystique With X-Men: Apocalypse

That’s all she wrote for Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique.

MTV caught up with the Oscar-award winning actress and asked about filming X-Men: Apocalypse soon, where it’s noted it may be the last one (for Lawrence?).

“It is my last one, actually” Lawrence confirmed. “Yes.”

Her response is interesting as it’s been said X-Men: Apocalypse is to center around Mystique and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto.

Now we know she won’t be in a sequel, if there is one.

Speaking of sequels, now I’m actually wondering if Fox might be rebooting the franchise to bring the characters to the present. X-Men: Apocalypse takes place in the 1980s – honestly I could see Fox launching a new X-Men franchise in the here-and-now.

Of course another option would simply be to replace Jennifer Lawrence with anothe actress as Mystique is a shape-shifter (and previously played by Rebecca Romijn).

Jennifer Lawrence actually might make a good Captain Ms. Marvel for Marvel Studios.

X-Men: Apocalypse has a May 27, 2016 release directed by Bryan Singer.

Joe Quesda Implies Peter Parker Will Be Spider-Man

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19762:]]

While Marvel Comics is going the politically correct racial diversity route with their characters, good news comes from the chief creative officer at Marvel, Joe Quesada, regarding the new movie Spider-Man.

Quesada, who also used to be EIC at Marvel Comics, is asked about the new Spider-Man for the Sony / Marvel Studios venture by a fan on Tumblr.

JQ responds by stating the key to making Spider-Man great is Peter Parker.

Check it out:

Have you seen any visual concepts/early designs for Spidey 2017? Also, what’s one of the main things you feel is most important to making this Spider-Man film the best that it can be?

JQ: The trick to making any incarnation of Spider-Man great, whether comics, animation or film is Peter Parker. Get Peter’s character right and  the rest falls into place.

Of course there is always the possibility that Marvel Studios could change Peter’s ethnicity, but per Joe Q’s statements above, it looks likely the new Spider-Man is still Peter Parker (and not Miles Morales).

The new Spider-Man is speculated to first appear in Captain America: Civil War, and then will have a standalone Spider-Man film in 2017.

Gal Gadot Talks Wonder Woman Criticism & Powers

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19757:]]

Gal Gadot will first be featured in Batman Vs. Superman prior to her Wonder Woman standalone movie and Justice League.

Gadot, who previously had roles in the Fast and Furious movies, is more known for being an Israeli supermodel, which is what caused a lot of controversy amongst the hardcore fans.

When Gadot was announced as Wonder Woman, some on the internet complained she was too skinny for the role.

Now in a new interview, Gal Gadot responds to the critcism (via robotunderdog).

I’m really lucky nothing in my life was instantaneous. When I was younger I would take criticism really hard. But now it mostly amused me. The true amazons had one boob so it won’t bother them in their archery. So it’s not going to be like real amazons. We always try to make everyone happy but we can’t.

Gadot continues by commenting on the fact that her breast size became a matter of international discussion.

No. After they asked me here, In Israel, if I have eating disorders and why am I so skinny, they said my head was too big and my body was like a broomstick I can take anything. It’s just empty talk. I understand that part of what I’m doing means being exposed. And part of being exposed is being under fire (criticism).

The actress also recounts how she leared she got the part.

I never had to wait so long for a reply. It was a month and a half of torture. It was a crazy roller-coaster. I couldn’t talk about it to anyone. On the day they promised a reply I was flying to NY for another gig. When the plane landed I saw I had a lot of missed calls. I called my agent still sitting in the plane with the belt on. She told me ‘ Congratulations! You got the part.’ During the flight I set next to a really nice man. A scientist from The Weizmann Institute of Science. He talked the entire flight about quantum physics. Now, imagine me, sitting on the plane, looking for a little piece of privacy, burring my head between my legs and starting to scream ‘Oh my god!’ again and again, because I just can’t believe it. Then I hang up the phone and he looks at me like ‘what just happened?’ and asks if everything is alright. I tell him ‘ I can’t really say anything but you will probably read about it tomorrow in the paper.‘

Gadot also mentions Wonder Woman’s powers, where she says Wonder Woman doesn’t fly.

She has unbelievable endurance. She is exceptionally strong. She can jump really high and practically fly. She know tons of martial arts styles. She is a strong and serious Woman.
