Kevin Feige Confirms Jake Schreier Directing Marvel’s X-Men Reboot, Script in the Works

Marvel’s X-Men reboot is officially moving forward, and Kevin Feige says Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier is locked in, which follows Ryan Coogler spilling the beans.

Schreier Tapped to Lead the Mutants

Speaking at a Fantastic Four: First Steps roundtable interview, Feige told CB.com, “It’s official, Jake Schreier is doing X-Men for us, and we’re very, very lucky.”

Feige also hinted at the direction they are going, which appears to be younger, as he praised Schreier for his character-driven work on Thunderbolts and said his ability to connect with younger audiences made him the right fit.

“X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie,” said Feige.

X-Men Script Development Has Begun

Feige confirmed the script is underway and called Schreier “an incredibly smart guy” and a “talented filmmaker.” He added the reboot is still early in development and is part of Marvel’s post-Secret Wars lineup, expected to release sometime after Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.

“We’re beginning. It’s all starting now,” Feige said.

Michael Lesslie is writing the X-Men screenplay, who wrote The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

What Saga Will the New X-Men Follow?

Feige noted that Marvel is still deciding which comic saga to adapt for the big screen.

“There’s so much more to tap into,” he said. “There are so many sagas within sagas for X-Men… [we’re] doing the most important thing, which is introducing all of these characters and giving them their due in our first film.”

Fox Cast Returning in Avengers: Doomsday

While the reboot will introduce a new team, Feige confirmed some familiar faces will return for Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026. That includes:

  • Patrick Stewart as Xavier
  • Ian McKellen as Magneto
  • Rebecca Romijn as Mystique
  • James Marsden as Cyclops
  • Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler
  • Channing Tatum as Gambit

Marvel’s X-Men Future

Schreier’s hiring follows a report that Marvel is planning a long-term X-Men rollout after reacquiring the rights in the 2019 Disney-Fox merger. As with Fantastic Four and Avengers, Feige is expected to make X-Men one of the tentpole franchises of the MCU moving into the 2030s as part of the MCU’s “new age of mutants.”

X-Men ’97 Season 2 is also in the works for Disney+.
