James Gunn’s DCU is once again mocking America in that first official Supergirl poster, which debuted with the line: “Truth. Justice. Whatever.”
The pattern continues in the DCU
The jab by Gunn didn’t come out of nowhere. It’s quite clear Gunn is sending “The Message” through his DCU.
Superman, Creature Commandos, and Peacemaker Season 2 lean heavily into political commentary, with the former featuring LGBTQ+ characters mocking America by comparing it to a Nazi world. Gunn goes even further and mocks Jesus when those characters say Nazis really love Jesus.

"Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it's incredibly important," – James Gunn

Superman merchandise revealed the shift from “The American Way” to “The Human Way,” which no doubt was also a deliberate move away from the character’s classic motto on Gunn’s part.

Now, the Supergirl poster’s “Whatever” tagline is just the latest example. The divisiveness is expected to continue in the Lanterns series from Tom King and Damon Lindelof.

Gunn’s Prior Controversies Fuel the Reaction
There’s no doubt that Gunn’s woke content is a direct reaction to his firing at Disney when conservatives unearthed his tweets.
Gunn hasn’t forgotten and he’s making sure “they” don’t forget, too.

Tom King’s Influence Raises More Concerns
The Supergirl movie also adapts Tom King’s comic, and King is publicly part of Gunn’s DCU writers group, who is described clearly as woke.
King’s comics have long divided readers. I’m told it’s no coincidence that King – a “former” CIA agent – is on board as a consultant and working within the DCU, and that Gunn’s stuff is causing division.
Because of this, King’s role in shaping the DCU has become another flashpoint. Some insiders and fans worry the DCU direction is being guided by voices that don’t reflect what the larger audience wants from DC films.
That’s evident simply by how much the international audience has rejected Gunn’s Superman, and by fans turning off Peacemaker, which lost 40% of its audience.

A Divisive Start for Supergirl
The poster was meant to kick off the marketing for the upcoming trailer, but instead it reignited debates already surrounding the DCU.
Is Gunn intentionally steering DC into political territory? The wokeness destroyed the MCU, Star Wars, Doctor Who, etc.
Is the new Supergirl meant to be rebellious or dismissive? Obviously.
Will this tone limit the movie’s appeal? Bingo.
With Supergirl releasing June 26, 2026, Warner Bros. now faces the challenge of selling the film while navigating an audience that’s already highly split on Gunn’s creative decisions.
Gunn also faces a time when he might be losing his job, as we’re told with the sale of WBD, Gunn will be out. Following our insider info, Gunn went on a YouTube “tour” and even questioned his future. Following Netflix winning the WBD bid, Gunn ran to Bloomberg in a desperate attempt to save his job.
Meanwhile, Zack Snyder honored Veterans’ Day with Henry Cavill as Superman. Gunn? Crickets.
