DC ENTERTAINMENT REVEALS FIRST DETAILS OF “REBIRTH” TO RETAILERS AT COMICS PRO 2016

80-Page DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH Special by Geoff Johns May 25, Titles to Ship Twice Monthly, New $2.99 Price Point Beginning in June

Before a packed house of comics retailers at the ComicsPRO Annual Membership meeting in Portland, DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee provided a first look at the company’s plans for its massive “REBIRTH” title relaunch scheduled for June.

“At DC we believe in superheroes, and what makes them great,” said Dan DiDio, co-publisher of DC Entertainment. “And, we also believe in the direct market and the core comics fan. REBIRTH is designed to bring back the best of DC’s past, embrace the stories we currently love and move the entire epic universe into the future. We are returning to the essence of the DCU. With REBIRTH we are putting the highest priority on the direct market and we will continue to create and cultivate new opportunities for retailers to thrive and prosper, grow readers, fans and customers.”

Retailers in attendance were also treated to a special personal video message from DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns. He outlined his perspective on the elements that make DC great and teased attendees with the opening line of his 80-page DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH Special, on sale May 25th:

“I love this world… But there’s something missing…”

Priced at just $2.99, this one shot will kick off a line-wide title relaunch. Written by Geoff Johns, it will feature an all-star roster of comics’ most popular artists: Ethan Van Sciver (GREEN LANTERN CORPS, EDGE OF OBLIVION), Phil Jimenez (WONDER WOMAN), Ivan Reis (CYBORG, AQUAMAN) and Gary Frank (BATMAN EARTH ONE).

As a follow up to Johns’ REBIRTH Special announcement, DiDio, and Co-Publisher Jim Lee, revealed to retailers plans to provide fans with more story, and more often. Beginning in June, all DC Universe monthly and twice monthly titles will ship at a new, lower price of $2.99. Superman Gets Another New Power In Action Comics #48

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24122:]]

Spoilers follow for this week’s Superman Action Comics #48.

Quick recap: Superman has been pretty powerless as of late because, among other things, Vandal Savage stole his power. So the Man of Steel comes up with the idea to use Kryptonite to burn away his top layer of skin cells that are preventing him from soaking up the yellow sun energy. Well, things don’t go exactly as planned and Superman is left with a new power.

Instead of his skin cells dieing off, they absorbed the kryptonite, which now gives him the ability to “feel transmissions… energy waves… from all over the world… including signals…”

Check out the pages below.

It’s being speculated Superman may be soon returning to his “normal self” with the upcoming DC relaunch, “Rebirth.”

Action Comics #50 also marks Greg Pak’s last issue.

DC Comics Reimagines Scooby-Doo, Flintstones, Johnny Quest & More

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24039:]]

DC Comics has announced new titles based on the Hanna-Barbera line of cartoons with reimaginings for Scooby-Doo, Flintstones, Johnny Quest and more.

Jim Lee did the Scooby-Doo cover and characters designs.

“I can’t think of anyone that doesn’t look back at these characters with anything but fond memories,” said Dan DiDio, DC Entertainment Co-Publisher. “With this initial lineup of titles and talent, we’re excited for fans to experience the reimagining of these Saturday morning classics with a more modern and contemporary look and feel.”

The titles will be released in May.

SCOOBY APOCALYPSE – Featuring character designs by veteran artist Jim Lee and an origin story by Jim Lee and Keith Giffen (JUSTICE LEAGUE 3001), artist Howard Porter (SUPERMAN) will provide his own unique take on Freddie, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo. “Those meddling kids” and their Mystery Machine are at the center of a well-meaning experiment gone wrong and they’ll need to bring all of their mystery solving skills to bear (along with plenty of Scooby Snacks), to find a cure for a world full of mutated creatures infected by a nanite virus that enhances their fears, terrors and baser instincts. This time, the horrors are real in this apocalyptic near-future badland!

FUTURE QUEST – Writer Jeff Parker (AQUAMAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED, BATMAN ’66) and artist Evan “Doc” Shaner (JUSTICE LEAGUE DARKSEID WAR: GREEN LANTERN) join forces to bring fans new tales of adventure’s most iconic teenager, Jonny Quest, along with his sidekick Hadji. This series combines Team QUEST (Hadji, Race Bannon, Dr. Benton Quest and Jezebel Jade) with some of the most well-known action and adventure heroes ever created by Hanna-Barbera, including SPACE GHOST, THE HERCULOIDS, BIRDMAN, MIGHTOR and FRANKENSTEIN Jr., among others.

WACKY RACELAND – Take The Ant Hill Mob, Penelope Pitstop and Dick Dastardly, mix in a healthy dose of “Mad Max” and you get this dark and gritty take on Hanna-Barbera’s “Wacky Races,” courtesy of writer Ken Pontac (REBOOT, HAPPY TREE FRIENDS) and artist Leonardo Manco (HELLBLAZER), with vehicle designs by Mark Sexton (MAD MAX: FURY ROAD). A time of hope and innocence with Utopia at the finish line has given way to planetary Armageddon and a desert wasteland full of radioactive lakes, nanotech dust storms, and cannibalistic mutants. Against this backdrop, the Wacky Racers and their sentient vehicles continue their contest, but now the competition is for survival, and there can only be one winner when the checkered flag falls.

THE FLINTSTONES – Based on character designs by Amanda Conner (HARLEY QUINN, STARFIRE), writer Mark Russell (PREZ, GOD IS DISAPPOINTED IN YOU) provides his own unique perspective on everyone’s “modern stone age family.” Russell will use Bedrock’s most popular family to shine a light on humanity’s ancient customs and institutions in a funny origin story of human civilization. Fred is still the simple man, striving to be the king of his castle, Wilma is still the tolerant but not-indulging wife and Barney (with his wife Betty and infant son Bamm-Bamm) is still the original wingman, whose loyalty to Fred often outweighs his common sense.

Marvel Comics Dead No More Teaser #2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24009:]]

Following the first teaser from two weeks ago, Marvel Comics has now revealed a second “Dead No More” teaser with additional information.

Included with the above image was the following:

“If you got a chance to bring back someone who died, would you? And how will CLASSIFIED deal when ones they thought long dead once again walk the earth?”

It’s also been revealed the answer to the teaser will happen with Marvel’s FCBD issue which will feature a lead-in to the new Captain America: Steve Rogers comic, with the other half of the FCBD issue featuring the “Dead No More” answer.

The teaser above seems to hint at a Spider-Man connection, but it could be just that – a teaser – with most likely Marvel releasing similar style teasers for other characters in the coming weeks.

Obviously, if we had a say in the matter, we would bring back Richard Rider as Nova (and yeah, we still consider Star-Lord dead, too).

Disney / Marvel Axes X-Men: Danger Room Protocols Fan Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23998:]]

Well, that is all she wrote for the X-Men: Danger Room Protocols web series meant to be a homage to the 90s cartoon.

Following the debut of the initial episode, Disney/Marvel has put a stop to the project citing copyright issues.

The creator of the series has posted a video on YouTube stating it’s cancelled.

Joel Furtado states he spent a year creating the project and all his money, and that he can’t afford to get into a legal battle with Marvel.

“I’m sort of being forced at this time to shut down and remove all the episodes and content to do with the series,” Furtado said, and then went on to thank the fans for their support.

“When I set out to make this project, I never really thought this was going to be an issue,” Furtado continued. “I didn’t think that Marvel was going to react this way, and this outcome, for me, is a little bit shocking. Just giving the precedent on the internet of how much fan art is made on a daily basis by thousands of people…. I never thought I would be treated differently.”

It’s possible Furtado might be able to put the video back up if he claims it’s a parody. The Supreme Court has ruled parody and satire come under Fair Use. Of course, Furtado could still face an uphill legal battle with Disney, which he obviously wants to avoid.

“The most heartbreaking thing of this entire experience isn’t even that I have to throw out this entire project in the garbage, or that I wasted all my money making this,” explained Furtado. “The most heartbreaking thing is that this company that I’ve idolized my entire life, and I’m finally meeting for the first time professionally, and this is the experience that we’ve gone through, where now Marvel’s looking at me like I’m an enemy to them. And that’s never what I wanted.”

CBR reached out to Marvel who declined to comment.

Marvel Announces New Thunderbolts

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23971:]]

Following the earlier teaser images, Marvel has now unveiled the new team of Thunderbolts, which will be led by the Winter Soldier, and also featuring Moonstone, the Fixer, Atlas, and MACH-V.

Jim Zub will write the new Thunderbolts with Jon Malin on art; the series is said to tie into the upcoming “Avengers Standoff” event which kicks off in April.

Via Marvel.com:

“Super villains looking for redemption I think is the ultimate strength and heart of Thunderbolts and sets it apart from everything out there,” argues Malin. “These characters have done very bad things—willingly. No one mind controlled them, they made choices of their own free will and that can never be fully taken back. That motivates me beyond belief to tell this story.”

“We all look for redemption in one form or another, this is universal and that’s the appeal,” he continues. “Also the lesson of be careful who you trust because when you need them the most they might not be the person you thought they were. They may, in fact, be the one putting the knife in your back, willingly and without hesitation.”

“Doing the right thing is different than being ‘good,’” Zub elaborates. “We’ve assembled a potent mix of characters to explore that theme with big drama, big action, and unexpected twists along the way. The new team is stacked with powerful personalities and a mission that’s going to tear them up and get right to their core. I’m excited about putting them in tough spots and letting the sparks fly.”
