Nintendo Releases First Official Zelda Movie Images

Nintendo has shared the first official look at the Legend of Zelda live-action movie.

In a post on the company’s X account, Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto unveiled three first-look images of Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.

The photos show the characters in costume in what Miyamoto called “a lush, natural setting,” matching earlier reports that the movie is filming in New Zealand.

Miyamoto tweeted: “This is Miyamoto. We have officially begun filming the live-action movie adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda” in the magnificent great outdoors, together with Bo Bragason, who plays Zelda, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who plays Link. The filming is progressing smoothly, so I would appreciate it if you could quietly watch over us. The theatrical release is scheduled for May 7, 2027. Please wait just a little longer.”

First Look Confirms Zelda and Link’s Designs

The released images align with the recent leaked set video, which showed Bragason and Ainsworth in fantasy-style outfits surrounded by dense forest. Link is seen in a green tunic with a brown strap and boots, while Zelda wears a simple blue dress with a belt and pouch.

These photos confirm the production has opted for a grounded look that’s visually faithful to the game’s world. The emphasis appears to be on practical costumes and natural landscapes over CGI-heavy backdrops.

Film Continues Production in New Zealand

Filming is underway in New Zealand, as revealed in behind-the-scenes videos circulating online this week. The clips featured horses, forest scenes, and a sizable crew operating on location, reinforcing the production’s scale.

The Zelda movie is directed by Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad. It is scheduled to hit theaters on April 30 7, 2027.
