While Sony hasn’t yet released it online, coming out of the San Diego Comic-Con saw a new Venom trailer released with lots of new footage including confirmation the symbiote won’t be sporting the white Spider-Man chest symbol.
While the classic look of Venom from the comics does feature the symbol, director Ruben Fleischer explains why it doesn’t fit with their movie version as they are going with a different origin.
“If you look at the comics, in Venom, there is just elements of white within his suit,” Ruben Fleischer told IGN. “Because our character does not originate from Spider-Man, it makes no sense to put a spider on his chest. We tried to be as accurate as we possibly could, even though some people feel it’s inaccurate, but there is a lot of white and we wanted to give him a distinctive pattern.”
Regarding why they did add white elements, it’s for effects on the big screen.
“If you have an all-black character, especially in night scenes, he just kind of disappears,” Fleischer explained. “Since we couldn’t use the Spider-Man symbol, we wanted to give him another graphic element, and those veins that kind of form a shape on his chest was an original idea that we just thought looked really cool.”
Here is a leaked image from the new trailer that sort of offers the effect they are going for, and it’s speculated the Venom trailer will be released some time this week or so.
Venom has an October 5, 2018 release directed by Ruben Fleischer starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, the titular character, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, Riz Ahmed as Dr. Carlton Drake, with Jenny Slate and Woody Harrelson.
