Tom Holland Walks Back Spider-Man Exit Talk

Tom Holland Walks Back Spider-Man Exit Talk

Tom Holland once said he would have “done something wrong” if he was still playing Spider-Man after turning 30. Now he’s about to turn 30, and he’s walking back the quote.

In a new GQ profile tied to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Holland revisited the 2021 comment, explained what he says he meant, and even suggested the line may have been part of a tactic with Sony.

More on the movie itself in our Spider-Man: Brand New Day guide — release date, cast, and plot.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man After 30 Quote Followed Him For Years

Holland made the comment back in 2021 while promoting Spider-Man: No Way Home, saying if he was still playing Spider-Man after 30, he had done something wrong.

The quote stuck because it sounded like Holland already had an exit plan. It also became harder to ignore once Spider-Man: Brand New Day moved forward with Holland still in the role.

Holland recently turned 30 on Monday, one month before Brand New Day opens in theaters.

Holland Says He Was Talking About Passing The Baton

Asked about the quote by GQ, Holland said his point was less about quitting and more about setting up the future of Spider-Man.

He explained that he wanted to “pass the baton” at some point and help create a future for the character beyond his version of Peter Parker. Holland said he still hasn’t done that yet, which is part of why the role remains unfinished business for him.

Holland has made a similar point before. Speaking with Empire, he said he would love to help set up whoever comes next, whether it ends up being Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, or another version of the character.

He also joked that he might need to update the old quote from 30 to 37.

Holland Hints The Quote May Have Been A Sony Tactic

The most interesting part is Holland admitting the original comment may have served another purpose.

He told GQ the quote may have been “part of a strategy to create fear,” with Sony thinking he could walk away from Spider-Man as he negotiated a new deal.

Holland stopped short of saying for sure that was the plan, but the comment makes the old quote look a lot different. Fans took it as a serious retirement hint for years. Holland now makes it sound like it may have been part real, part leverage.

Now Holland Wants To Keep Playing Spider-Man

Whatever Holland meant in 2021, his position now is clear: he is not in a hurry to leave Spider-Man behind.

Holland told GQ that playing Spider-Man has been the joy of his life, and he will keep doing it for as long as Marvel and Sony want him.

After taking time away from acting and getting sober, Holland framed his return to Spider-Man, along with The Odyssey, as the start of a new chapter instead of the end of one.
