There’s one that’s very clear, however: the name of FBI agent Kurt Weller, emblazoned across her back. “Jane,” Agent Weller and rest of the FBI quickly realize that each mark on her body is a crime to solve, leading them closer to the truth about her identity and the mysteries to be revealed.”

Marvel Phase 2 Contains Same Star Wars Easter Eggs

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20174:]]

It seems just about everyone missed this one as Kevin Feige has let it be known he included the same Star Wars Easter Egg in each of the Marvel Phase 2 movies.

Speaking with CinemaBlend, Feige said he is a big Star Wars fan and offered:

So is this a spoiler for Ant-Man… not really. I’m obsessed with Star Wars. Who’s not? I’m 40 years old. I’m in the movie business. I went to USC. So I’m obsessed with Star Wars – and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional, including that beat that you referenced. It sort of happens in every Star Wars movie, but I was sort of looking at it, ‘Okay, is Phase Two our Empire Strikes Back?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different. Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one.

Regarding the Easter Eggs:

Iron Man 3 featured Guy Pearce’s character, Aldrich Killian, getting his arm cut off by Tony Stark when he heats up Iron Man’s suit and the end of the movie.

Thor 2 features Thor getting his arm “cut off” by Loki.

Captain America 2 features a flashback where Bucky had his own arm cut off when he fell from the train in Captain America: The First Avenger.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy also had a similar Star Wars Easter Egg with Gamora cutting Groot’s arm off (this might be the enigmatic Easter Egg Gunn keeps referring to that he says everyone missed).

Those are the Star Wars Easter Eggs known to date as The Avengers 2 is yet to be released – so be on the look out for someone getting their arm cut off just like Luke Skywalker from Empire Strikes Back.

Thor 2’s Patty Jenkins To Direct Wonder Woman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20074:]]

Monday saw Michelle MacLaren drop out from directing the Wonder Woman due to creative differences, and now it’s learned Patty Jenkins has been brought on board to take over.

Patty Jenkins was at one time lined up to direct Thor 2, but in similar circumstances, left the Marvel movie over creative differences.

THR reports Jenkins has closed the deal for Wonder Woman with Warner Bros.

It’s said WB and Jenkins need to movie pretty fast to keep up with the 2017 Wonder Woman release date. As far as the script goes, it was previously said that MacLaren was heavily involved in its shaping, so it remains to be seen whether or not Jenkins will need to retool the script or even start over from scratch.

Jenkins saw directorial success with her debut movie starring Charlize Theron on Monsters and has done episodes of the AMC hit series The Killing.

Gal Gadot will star as Wonder Woman and be featured in the May 2016 Batman Vs. Superman.

Kevin Feige Talks Spider-Man, Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange, Captain America 3 & More

Kevin Feige continues to make the press rounds for Avengers 2, with this time the president of Marvel Studios asked about a potentially non-white Spider-Man.

In the above video, Feige is asked about Miles Morales with Feige responding:

We’ve always thought it should be Peter. We’ve never seen the MCU version of Peter Parker. It felt like we needed to see that first. Miles, I think is awesome. There are opportunities for him, for sure, if this all works and continues.

The potenital for a non-white Spider-Man is then brought up, with Feige responding:

Maybe. The field is very wide right now in terms of who we are looking at within a certain age range.

Feige also answered questions on Captain Marvel and offered they didn’t want to introduce her flying around without anyone knowing her character, and Feige offered in an earlier version of an Avengers 2 script, Carol Danvers was a part of it.

Regarding Doctor Strange, Feige offers the supernatural side of the MCU is something they have been talking about for a long time. Feige says director Scott Derrickson and the producing team are scouting locations in NYC with filming to take place in London this November. Feige also offers Benedict Cumberbatch is so excited, and they haven’t discussed Strange’s accent yet (Cumberbatch is British).

Feige is also asked if there is a possibilty to add in other Marvel movies in Phase 3, like a Hulk movie or Iron Man 4. Feige said they already added in Spider-Man, but said he would be more worried about having to change the schedule again than adding in more movies.

On Thor 3, Feige offers they are currently writing the script and looking for a director(s) and again confirms Loki and Tom Hiddleston, and says Loki has an integral role in Thor: Ragnarok.

Regarding the two part Avengers: Infinity War films, Feige says they wouldn’t be one big movie cut in half, but two distinct movies.

Captain America 3 shoots in two weeks, with Feige offering Cap is still the primary focus.

Thor’s Mom’s Husband Dan Gilroy Slams Superhero Movies

While accepting the 2015 Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, director Dan Gilroy’s acceptance speech gave superhero movies a quick jab.

Gilroy finished his speech with: “Independent film, the foundation and everybody here today, I think are holdouts against a tsunami of superhero movies that have swept over this industry. We have survived and we have thrived and I think that’s true spirit.”

Gilroy received the award for his directorial debut on Nightcrawler, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal.

While Dan Gilroy calls superhero movies “a tsunami,” – meaning they destroy – we guess he doesn’t mind writing them as he wrote the screenplay for Stan Lee’s Annihilator film.

Dan Gilroy also wrote Real Steel, which arguably saw robots become superheroes, as well as The Bourne Legacy, which saw Jeremy Renner as a hero with enhanced super powers.

And who is Gilroy married to? Thor’s mom, Rene Russo, aka Frigga.

Branagh in a recent interview stated he would consider directing Thor 3.

Cinderella has a March 13, 2015 release starring Cate Blanchett, Lily James, Richard Madden and Helena Bonham Carter.

Synopsis:

The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham-Carter) steps forward and — armed with a pumpkin and a few mice — changes Cinderella’s life forever.

Jaimie Alexander Returning To Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18379:]]

Two months ago saw Jaimie Alexander tease she was filming scenes for Lady Sif, and now it’s as we speculated, as Alexander will return to Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

TV Insider reports Jaimie Alexander will reprise as Sif in episode 12, which will see Sif come to Earth on an undercover mission where she encounters a villain with superpowers that are equal to her own. The ensuing battle is said to take place off the coast of Portugal and becomes big news. The fight tops social media causing the SHIELD agents to rush in and investigate only to find Sif without her armor and suffering from short-term memory loss.

Sif has no idea who Thor is or that she serves a king, and we’re going to have fun with that,” executive producer Jeffrey Bell said. “It’ll give us some much-needed humor in a season that’s been full of betrayal and death. Sif can’t even recall who she came here from Asgard to stop, but Agent Coulson [Clark Gregg] and his team will try to help her figure all that out.”

It is said Sif hasn’t forgotten everything as she does know she is an alien and from Asgard.

“We’ve been dealing a lot with space aliens and Inhumans in our last few episodes—things our Earth-bound heroes just don’t know much about,” Bell says. “They need help understanding what’s really going on. Sif’s memory—what’s left of it—will come in very handy.”

Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.IE.L.D. returns March 3rd; the Jaimie Alexander Sif episode airs March 10th.

Watch: Tom Hiddleston Talk Thor 3

Check out video above of Tom Hiddleston from the BAFTAs where the Loki actor briefly mentions Thor 3.

Thor 3 is happening at some point. And the last time we saw Loki he was on the throne so there is some questions to be answered,” Hiddleston said. “I love the character. It’s a great great character. It’s amazing how the whole Marvel world has been embraced by people who love films. It’s fun.”

Chris Hemsworth also mentioned Thor 3 recently teasing it’s a “big one” as well as mentioning how The Avengers 2 will be an impact on the third film in the franchise.

Speaking of impacts, Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige previously said more of the same when he mentioned Thor 3 will take things to another level.

“This is a very important movie for us in our Phase 3 timeline,” Feige said regarding Thor 3. “As the Russo’s did so well reinventing Captain America in the Winter Soldier and changing everything that would come after it, that is the plan for Thor: Ragnarok — to take Thor to another level of his own franchise and in fact picks up right after we leave him in The Avengers 2 and will impact everything to come afterwards.”

“Thor: Ragnarok” has a July 28, 2017 release.

Ultron & Adam Warlock Rumored For Guardians of the Galaxy 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18974:]]

Some new rumors are suggesting that James Gunn may be adapting Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Marvel Cosmic event Annihilation Conquest.

According to a Reddit user claiming he has been laid off as an intern for Marvel Studios, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will feature Adam Warlock and Ultron.

The user claims to have a 200-page notebook filled with Marvel info that he acquired while working at Marvel for the past year.

Details for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 include that “Marvel is ready to push Adam Warlock on everyone and it’s going to rock!” The user also says Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is still being written and that “Gunn keeps that close to his chest.”

When questioned in regards to what movie coming up should be the most exciting, the user responds, “Guardians 2.”

The user also suggests to read Abnett and Lanning’s Annihilation Conquest stating “it’s a good book.”

Adam Warlock is also said to be the “#1 ‘wow, blown away, didn’t see that coming’ type item.”

“Adam Warlock. He’s a character Marvel has been sitting on for years. When they put him into play, it’s going to elevate the MCU to something else all together,” the reported Marvel leaker said.

The leaker also added that no one has been cast as Adam Warlock as far as he knew.

Other details mentioned include:

Mephisto will be the “new Loki” for Phase 3.

Adam McKay, Matt Reeves and Gareth Edwards are wanted to direct Thor 3.

Beta Ray Bill is a possibility.

It’s said Marvel ended discussions with Sony about Spider-Man because: “Marvel didn’t feel like they wanted to wait on Sony and Avi Arad. They were playing hardball and were difficult to deal with. not worth Marvel’s time so they dropped discussions.”

New Infinity Stones will show up in Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

ABC’s Agents Of SHIELD will appear in The Avengers 2.

Hank Pym is said to be a “Villain” with the following also stated:

Flashbacks would reveal that Hank and Janet worked as a duo. During a small mission, Janet is killed. This devastates Hank.

He devotes himself and his company to protecting people. Think like Tony in IM1. Problem is, he becomes paranoid, over protective. The board and Cross decide that Pym is out of control, and that he’s abusing the company’s resources. they out him as president.

Hank then hires Scott to steal from Cross, which he has a plan which would put him back in control of his company. During third act Pym reveals that he has a plan to control heroes. He doesn’t want anybody to get hurt like Janet did. Hope and Scott see how deranged this is.

By end of movie, Cross is outed and Pym is back. He starts the hard path towards Civil War by setting up the Registration act with Tony who he sees as a tool to accomplish his goals.

Again, not a true ‘villain’ more of a misunderstood good guy.

It should be noted, another Reddit user claiming to be an actual Marvel intern is stating the above is false.

Chris Hemsworth Teases Thor 3 (Video)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18959:]]

We get a short video of Chris Hemsworth discussing Thor 3.

While Hemsworth can’t say much – there isn’t even a script – Hemsworth goes tell Digital Spy it’s going to be big.

“Yeah. Definitely. I mean it has to. Doesn’t it?” Hemsworth responds when questioned if The Avengers: Age Of Utron will impact Thor 3. “No, I can’t [give any hints], but also there is no script for the next Thor, so I have no idea where we are going to end up, but it’s pretty big – this one.”

As mentioned, Chris Hemsworth will be featured in The Avengers: Age of Ultron prior to Thor 3, and for some reason, Thor is a heavy favorite to be killed off in Avengers 2. It’s possible the Marvel comic books could be to blame as anytime Thor is set to appear on the big screen, they either kill off or replace the character. Another reason could be that Joss Whedon has been teasing dead Avengers. There is also the fact that most of the cast of The Avengers 2 has been said to be appearing in Captain America 3, but not Thor (or the Hulk for that matter).

Thor: Ragnarok hits July 28, 2017.

Check out the video of Chris Hemsworth talking Thor 3:

COVER SHOOT: The Top 5 Comic Book Covers For 3/19/2014

COVER SHOOT

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

This weekly feature will take a look at THE most visually compelling comic book covers on the market today. Whether they be rare variant editions or just your standard fare, these are the top 5 covers that stand out amidst the bevy of books released each week. They say, “A picture is worth a thousand words”  but these covers are worth more than that! No matter the storylines behind them, these covers compel you to at least check them out, which can be worth exponentially more than just words to the companies that publish them! Enjoy!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14444:]]

1.  Noah (Image):  This movie adaption hardcover not only has a stunning cover by the world renowned, Niko Henrichon, but he does all the interior art as well! The linework and layout of this image exudes desolation, a single man bearing the weight of the world, no one could have conveyed that powerful of a thought more beautifully than Henrichon. This cover is so pristine and epic that it is overwhelming!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14445:]]

2. Trinity of Sin: Pandora #9 (DC): From the foreground pose to the choice of illuminating the background in an onslaught of baby blue, Julian Totino Tedesco, made all the right choices to make this cover pop off of the racks! The slightly diluted painting scheme is truly beautiful and helps solidify the main character in her new role of warrior of the light. It is almost heavenly in scope and astonishing to behold!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14446:]]

3. Daredevil #1 (Variant Edition) (Marvel):  This variant edition by Paolo Rivera, was originally petitioned as a color piece with Daredevil’s suit in a crimson red. I think this stark black and white version is even more eye catching than the original thought and helps to accentuate the graphic background design that Rivera meticulously laid out. While the foreground image of DD is done very well, it is the background that makes this cover great for me. Not only does it offset with the foreground image but it also represents the story well in regards to acting as a maze. It mimics DD’s disadvantage of being in a new city perfectly, making the whole book something special.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14448:]]

4. Harbinger: Bleeding Monk #0 (Variant Edition) (Valiant):  Clayton Henry is a master of mixing digital and painted art to make some of the most outstanding covers on the market today. This one is no different but the layout is done so exceptionally well, that it blows everything else away! The forced perspective is amazing, making you feel as though the focal point is literally floating above you. The central image alone can sell this book, but Henry made the background colors a complete juxtaposition to the foreground, creating a solid piece that is truly stunning!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14450:]]

5. Thor: God of Thunder #20 (Marvel):  Do I need to say anything about this cover? Does anyone create a Thor cover better than Esad Ribic? “I say thee, nay!” This image is pure power, pure strength and pure excitement! The detail Ribic puts into “old” Thor is astounding but just look at, even “older,” Galactus in the background!  The eye has so much to take in it’s dizzying! There is not one inch of this cover that doesn’t make the inner fanboy in me squeal with glee. ’nuff said!

Movie Review: Thor: The Dark World

A Supreme Victory!

A Film Review of Thor: The Dark World

By: Lawrence Napoli

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:12206:]]

Let’s not beat around the bush on this one.  Thor: The Dark World is a great sci-fi, action adventure film that has all the trappings of an excellent summer blockbuster that reaffirms its roots, acknowledges the events of The Avengers in a meaningful way and tempts the viewer with all kinds of possibilities regarding the potential of “Phase 2” and beyond.  In essence, this film does everything that Iron Man 3 simply could not be bothered with and fortunately for the audience, this translates into a superior cinematic experience and worth 100% of the price of admission.  Deeper levels of relevance and interconnectivity is the true superpower of the big screen Marvel Studios adaptations, but what made this expansion possible is the fact that each Avenger film stands on its own with varying degrees of success.  The mighty Thor’s sequel is the only solo Avenger follow-up (so far) to be a significant upgrade from its establishing film and it does so with more of everything: story, action and effects and happens to do so without sacrificing character development or curtailing screen time in the process.

Experience in the Marvel Universe by the writers of this film best explains why this next chapter in Thor’s cinematic life is entertaining to both fanboys and novices alike.  Those responsible for the screenplay begin with Christopher Yost, a veteran of several Marvel animated TV shows such as Iron Man: Armored Adventures, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Hulk Vs. while Christopher Marcus and Stephen McFeely helped co-write Captain America: The First Avenger and The Winter Soldier.  As for Thor’s general story, Don Payne also helped write Fantastic Flop (er) 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer and though Robert Rodat hasn’t partaken in any Marvel license prior to The Dark World, he did write some fairly recognizable films like The Patriot and Saving Private Ryan.  Everyone involved with this script is coming from a very comfortable place in terms of the superhero genre as well as how Thor ought to fit in this Marvel film universe.  The strongest points of the story involve Thor’s evolved relationships with wayward brother Loki and difficult-to-please father Odin.  Both were highlights of the original film, but The Dark World enhances the impacts of these subplots by introducing a new opposition that is by no means a pushover even when compared to the likes of the Chitari Invasion of NYC.

Of course, no story is flawless as I felt the implementation of comedy at various points truly fizzled thanks to the misplaced loyalty to some characters already established in this mythos.  The repartee between Thor and Loki is, once again, pure genius thanks mostly to the chemistry and performances of the actors, but the interjection of Jane Foster and the rest of her human friends are inconsistent at best.  In addition, I’ll make note of an old criticism concerning the use of the rest of Thor’s Asgardian Power Rangers such as Sif, Fandral and Volstagg which carries over from the first Thor.  While their roles are only slightly more active and only slightly more significant in The Dark World I still would have liked to see more of them, their interactions amongst each other and how they influence Thor himself.  Alas, characters that are purely situational support simply cannot be given expanded screen time to have satisfactory subplots fully mature and resolve when there are so many other characters waiting in line for it.  Perhaps we’ll see more of Asgard’s marquee talent if and when Loki gets his spin off/prequel movie green lit?  I hope X-Men: Days of Future Past has a specific plot device prepared to address its much larger cast of alphas that doesn’t involve “just making it a Wolverine movie” once again.

Let’s hear it for the action!  Let’s hear it for the effects!  The Dark World showcases much more frequent and higher quality action sequences and battles than its predecessor in so many ways, but none more pleasing than seeing the thunder god truly cut loose with power beyond clobbering jerks on the head with Mjolnir.  There’s lots of lightning, lots of flying and lots of pure, unadulterated rage.  There’s also plenty of close quarters brawling and swordplay, but the scale and scope have been expanded to raise the stakes and the suspense.  I was a bit concerned when the word on the street was that this film would channel the look and feel of Game of Thrones when that would be a clear back-stepping of the higher plane tech/magic establishment of Thor thus far.  Thankfully, this film does not get a Braveheart overhaul and actually looks and feels much more like a sci-fi film specifically thanks to the new enemy: The Dark Elves.  The contrast between the idyllic paradise of Asgard and the cold technology of the Dark Elves yields a visually dynamic frame in almost every moment.  The Dark World only saw a $20 million dollar bump to its budget from its predecessor, but it seems as though the money was put to much better use in regards to moment to moment visual effects, explosions and mass destruction.

The Marvel Studio films are, for the most part, exceptional action blockbusters, but another pillar of their success (beyond their interrelation) is character development and you simply don’t have it without solid performances by your cast.  Unfortunately, the one actor in The Dark World that is currently in possession of an Academy Award is, ironically, the least impressive in regards to her performance.  It could very well be that director Alan Taylor specifically told Natalie Portman to present Jane Foster as a lovesick, pre-teenie-bopper that doesn’t have a true grasp of the global impact of The Avengers and Thor in particular despite being a supposed “scientific leader in the field of inter-dimensional phenomena.”  If this was the case, then Portman is the best actor on the planet, but I doubt Foster was meant to be so flippant and, candidly speaking, girly.  Portman feels out of place and looks immature for a mortal woman meant to carry on a relationship with an Asgardian.  The same holds true for the character Kat Dennings plays as the contributions of both of these actresses elevates to nothing more than damsels in distress and vapid, eye-rolling, comic relief.  Their mere presence in a film like The Dark World is only to attract more young women within the money demographic to join their fanboy brethren at the box office.

I also had no clue what was going on with Stellan Skarsgard’s Erik Selvig for the entirety of The Dark World.  Apparently he gets a concentrated dose of “the crazies” and never fully recovers.  Mark him down as another comic relief character which is a shame seeing how one can tell that behind that glazed over and clueless demeanor, Skarsgard is aching to deliver a line of some relevance for the entirety of this film.  I also want to make note of Anthony Hopkins, while still solid as Odin really shows his age in this film.  He does not bring the same energy or sage, fatherly wisdom or warmth from the original and perhaps this was meant to be a specific status shift for the character, but doing so by way of stoic facial expression and a couple of eye twitches doesn’t exactly evoke a moving performance of any kind.  I did like Jamie Alexander’s Lady Sif and for a while, it looked like the film was going to have a more capable and empowered woman impact the plot a bit, but alas Jane Foster is a more “important” character.

The real performances to make note of are (surprise, surprise) Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth as Loki and Thor, respectively.  Hiddleston is a master of presenting the charming, smug, back-stabber and is rewarded with additional screen time to explore more redeeming motivations to his character.  Hemsworth embodies everything demanded of the classic Hollywood hero with a heart of gold, but does so from a much more humble state of mind as his character has been through a lot and has clearly outgrown his brazen childishness.  These two individual performers would be a windfall for any production, but together represent the best one-two character combination of any comic book adaptation, ever.  Their onscreen chemistry is so good that I fear neither character will be allowed to grow on their own in future films in this ever expanding Marvel Universe.  Not that I want to see Hiddleston without Hemsworth or vice-versa, but Loki shouldn’t be Thor’s “big bad” in every story.

Thor: The Dark World is a must-see for any Marvel true believer, comic book fanboy, or anyone interested in seeing a good looking, special effect driven adventure.  And for as much money as Iron Man 3 made this past summer ($409 million in US, $806 million abroad), Thor’s sequel is a better movie; the end.  Box office projections don’t see this film exceeding $100 million on its opening weekend, but I have a feeling those predictions may be debunked once word of mouth gets out.  It’s winter time ladies and gentlemen and that means we’re all going to be subjected to some heavy handed dramas and Oscar contenders to power through the awards season.  Grab some cinematic fun and whet your appetite for Phase 2 because the Marvel movement isn’t running out of steam anytime soon.  Excelsior!

1. Miniature Jesus #5 (of 5) (Image Comics): This series by Ted Mckeever has had some of the most creative covers in it’s five issue run. Known for his use of bland backgrounds and exquisite line drawings, McKeever has quickly become one of my favorite cover artists! Let it be known that simple lines used with extraordinary skill can trump 3D covers any day!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:11586:]]

2. Batgirl #24 (DC Comics): Alex Garner has quickly become a staple on COVER SHOOT and there is no argument as to why! Using both paint and computer enhancement, these Batgirl covers have become fan favorites, warranting cries of, “We need posters!” across all of comicdom. Lifelike and beautiful, Garner tells a story with a single image, melding perfectly with Gail Simone’s tale within the book.  Simply, exquisite!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:11587:]]

3. Thor: God of Thunder #14 (Marvel Comics): Though usually done by Esad Ribic, legendary artist Ron Garney has been making fans salivate over his Thor covers the past few months. Explosive and with an “in your face” composition, this cover exudes everything Thor is about! Brutality, fantasy, power and confidence is forced at you, leaping off the cover, and it makes you want to, no, need to know what’s going on in the story. Perfect cover to draw you in!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:11588:]]

4. Creepy Comics #14 (Dark Horse Comics): Known for trend setting covers, Creepy, always delivers the goods. Especially, with this gorgeously haunting cover by David Palumbo. With meticulous composition, this painted cover draws your eye from top to bottom, giving you the feeling of descent as you gaze upon it. With it’s two color palette, it is masterfully done, setting itself apart from all the bold colored covers around it.

5. Batman: Arkham Unhinged #19 (DC Comics): Nothing can pull your eye to it better than a cover with graphic shapes, simple lines and a pristine sense of color! With a bleached background and a single image foreground, Christopher Mitten has created something fantastic. Accentuated by simple but exceptional line drawings, this cover pops off of the shelves and makes you take notice. It is simply profound and I would be proud to add this cover to my comic art collection!

Cover Shoot

This weekly feature will take a look at the most visually compelling covers on the market today. Whether they be variant editions or standard ones, these are the top 5 covers that stand out amongst the bevy of books that are released each week. They say, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” these covers are worth more than that! No matter the storylines found behind them, these covers draw you to at least check them out, which can be worth exponentially more than just words to the companies that publish them! Enjoy!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9411:]]

1.  Fables #131 (Vertigo/DC):  Joao Ruas continually creates some of the best artistic pieces seen in comics today. This piece in particular, grabs the reader with a myriad of techniques that tantalize the eye. From the bold use of color on the “Round Table,” to the simplistic sketches that decorate the background, this one has it all. But, it is the gaunt and burdened faces of King Arthur and his men that truly grab the reader and make them want to learn more.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9412:]]

2.  Superior Carnage #1 (Marvel): Artist extrordinaire, Clayton Crain, makes a stunning rendition of Marvel’s most ravenous psycho — Carnage! No one has made Carnage look more maniacal than Crain! Utilizing the background as dead space makes the crimson spilling forth that much more eerie and the layers upon layers he used to accentuate the sinew and movement of the symbiote, — perfect!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9413:]]

3.  Batman ’66 #1 — SDCC Variant Edition — (DC): Okay, this one is going to be hard to find but that doesn’t make it any less cool! Done by Mattel, this cover pays homage to the camp and innocence of the “60’s television show while making it a unique collectable that fans will be clamoring for! You may not be able to find it at your local shop, or be able to get it cheap, but it’s worth a try to have such a “swingin” book in your collection!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9414:]]

4.  Harbinger Wars #4 — Variant Edition — (Valiant):  Juan Doe has been doing his stylized “propaganda” covers for awhile now, but this one will surely stand out above everything else this week. Stark, bold, black and white lines help to off set the violent oranges and reds of the background formulating in a dizzying array of complex shapes and figures. The figurehead of Toyo Harada prominently displayed above all else gives the cover a central, powerful image that commands notice. This one is outstanding!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9415:]]

5.  Thor: God of Thunder #10 (Marvel):  Esad Ribic is one of the most soft spoken and underrated artists in comics today. For a man that is so quiet, his covers explode off of the racks! This complex image of Thor battling the God Butcher is exquisite in scope and execution. The painted image conveys so much raw emotion and power that you can practically hear the rage bellowing from Thor’s lips. With stark color contrasts and a dynamic visage, this cover hammers the competition!

1. Harbinger #1:  Valiant’s second series comes out today, and it surpasses the original series in every way! Great characterization, coupled with a cool premise — makes for one amazing book! Read my full review here!

2.  Earth 2 #2:  Though we have all seen the hype this book is getting for the sexual orientation of one Alan Scott, this book is bigger than just that! Here we finally see the return of Mr. Terrific, a winged warrior’s first appearance to the New 52 and Jay Garrick become the Flash! They might not be the J.S.A. of old â€”  but it’s awesome just the same! Read my full review here!

3.  Before the Watchmen: Minutemen #1 (of 6):  Do I really need to explain why this is on my list?! One of comics “Holy Grails” has a prequel, ya know you’re going to get it â€”  if you can find it! ‘Nuff said!

4.  Fairest #4:  This great series from the pages of Fables, continues on with it’s amazing retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty story! But will Jonah betray Ali Baba and Briar Rose to the Ice Queen before the tale is even finished? Great book with spectacular art by the one and only Phil Jimenez!

5.  The Mighty Thor: Annual #1: So I hear that people are sick of Marvel not doing cosmic correctly anymore. Well, this ones for you! Taking place before The Mighty Thor #1, this tale has Uatu, Scrier, one thousand Thors, one thousand Silver Surfers and the cosmic granddaddy of them all â€” Galactus! This ones a throw down for the ages, folks!

Review: The Mighty Thor #12

Today, it seems like all the Avengers books are wrapping up their current storylines in neat little packages. Could it be a certain movie that is forthcoming, or perhaps a crossover that has been hyped for six months? Either way, both New Avengers and The Mighty Thor finish their current arcs today and they go out with a — BANG!

Although I initially did not relish Fraction’s current arc – Tanarus and witches and trolls oh my – this conclusion story is exactly what I have come to see! The return of Thor and the rise of Asgardia as the sanctuary for the Nine Realms, has been outstanding! Full of battle heavy excitement and camaraderie, you cannot help but get swept up in the euphoric wave of clanging swords and war cries! But it is the revelation to all Asgardia that the one true Odinson has returned that gets your adrenaline pumping! It is classic and pure, reminiscent of all those Thor tales from long ago.

Fraction has brought this series back full circle to how he began it. Action, intrigue and the wonder that is involved with great Thor stories, you will find them all inside this issue. But my favorite part is that you are actually hearing the entire tale by a character telling it as a bedtime story. It is a great way to bookend the issue, and gives it a more mythical feel, something vast and epic. Plus, we learn the final fate of two characters that have gone through so much, that their reunion is one of pure joy.

This is an issue that only those who have been reading the current arc will truly understand. So, if you are one of the last to cling to the Avengers ever growing bandwagon, I suggest waiting until next month to begin your quest for all things Avenger. But for those that have been hanging on the edge of your seats these past few months — GET THIS BOOK NOW! By the time you finish the final page, you will be saying,”All Hail Asgardia!”

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile for March 28th, 2012

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

(A weekly quick pick of the five titles that should reside at the top your pull list. In no particular order!)

I do the research, you reap the reward! Before you head out to your favorite shop today, make sure to add these books to your list of goodies. Forget that apple a day nonsense, this “DOC’s” prescription for good health begins with these top five titles of the week!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:1110:]]1.  The New Avengers #23:  Bendis may be going off of the Avengers books he has steered for so many years, but this is the way it should be done! Intrigue, crazy villains and above all else — fighting! Only two words are needed to get you hyped about this book — Skaar Smash!

2.  American Vampire #25:  Scott Snyder’s blast from the past storyline continues here with Travis and Skinner going head to head to the death! Travis might be ready for Skinner but not for the revelation that awaits him. Good thing he’s “cool” enough to get over it!

3.  Teen Titans #7:  Lobdell and Booth have created the teencentric book on the stands every month. Cool battles, cooler costumes, excitement abounds every page and the villains are just plain crazy! This is the embodiment of excitement!

4.  The New Deadwardians #1:  Okay, vampires and zombies have been way over used in the past decade. But Dan Abnett brings a dimension to the horror genre that is rarely seen — Victorian crime mystery! Great read for that little something different in your diet!

5.  The Mighty Thor #12:  THE RETURN OF THOR! Norse gods against an army of trolls with Thor and Ulik slamming each other sonless! You want action? You got it! Plus, a long awaited reunion of two lost warriors.
